Weed Occurrence and Yield Loss due to Weeds in Different Direct - Seeded Rice Paddy Fields (벼 직파재배(直播栽培) 유형(類型)에 따른 잡초발생(雜草發生) 및 벼의 수량(收量)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • The pattern of rice cultivation in Korea is changing from hand transplanting and machine transplanting into direct-seeding for low input and cost-down practices. However, there are still some obstacles to establish the direct-seeding cultural practices because of poor seedling stand, lodging, and weed infestation. In particular, there were much more and wide weed occurrence in direct-seeding rice as compared with the transplanted rice. Weed occurrence in terms of dry weight of weeds was highest in dry direct-seeded rice followed by sowing an puddled soil, sowing on submerged soil in order as compared with transplanting with infant rice seedling. Echinochloa crux-galli was a common dominant weed with 35~44% distribution in any direct-seeding methods. The dominant weed species were E. crux-galli, Cyperus difformis, C. serotinus, and Ludwigia prostrata in dry-seeded rice. The dominant weed species in water-seeded rice were E. crus-galli, Eleocharis kuroguwai, Scirpus juncoides, and Monochoria vaginalis. Yield loss of rice due to weeds at weedy condition was 96% in dry direct-seeded rice. In water-seeded rice, yield loss was 61%, whereas yield loss was 40% in machine transplanting with infant rice seedling.

A Field Trial of Bokto Seeding Technology for Rice Cultivation in Democratic People's Republic of Korea (벼 복토직파신기술 북한 협동농장 실증시험 연구)

  • The special project was conducted at the cooperative farm where located at Yakjeon-ri Sukcheon-gun Pyeongannam-do, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. This farm was firstly introduced a newly developed technology-"Bokto seeding technology" for rice cultivation from the Republic of Korea. Total acreage of rice paddy field cultivated by this technology was 800ha and the average yield was 7.17t/ha with paddy rice which was higher by 109.2% than that of the transplanting method for rice cultivation. In general rice disease was decreased at the Bokto seeded rice plant compared to the transplanted rice plant and root activity was higher in Bokto seeded rice. Optimum seeding amount was determined at rate of 90kg/ha in Pyeongdo 5(early ripening variety) and 110kg/ha at Pyeongdo 11(medium ripening variety) and Pyeongyang 43(late ripening variety), respectively. A recommended sowing time was within late April for late ripening variety like Pyeongyang 43, May 1-5 for medium ripening variety, and May 5-15 for early ripening variety.

Comparison of Nitrogen Application Methods at the 4th Leaf Stage in Direct-Seeded Rice Field

  • Two methods of nitrogen application at the 4th leaf stage were evaluated in direct-seeding rice cultivation on dry paddy soil: one was the top dressing of nitrogen on dry paddy condition before irrigation (TNDP) for labor saving, and the other was the top dressing of nitrogen on dry paddy with mechanical rotavation of the inter-row space (TNDPIR) for increasing the efficiency of nitrogen. To evaluate these two application methods, leaf chlorophyll contents, growth characteristics and yields were compared with two conventional methods, basal application (BA) and top dressing on flooded paddy condition at the 4th leaf stage (TNFP). The SPAD value of rice in TNDP was similar with that in TNFP throughout the whole growth stage of rice. Also, there were no differences in rice growth and yield between the two methods. However, in TNDPIR, the SPAD value was the highest during tillering stage among the four application methods, and the tiller number, LAI at heading stage and the panicle number were higher than the two conventional methods.

Effects of Growth Retardants on Lodging-related Traits in Direct Seeded Rice on Flooded Paddy Surface

  • This study examined the effects of growth retardants and midsummer drainage on lodging-related characters in direct seeding rice culture on flooded paddy surfaces. Treatments included in this study were continuous flooding, two time midsummer drainages (TTD), and inabenfide or trinexapac-ethyl application after TTD. Culm length was reduced most by 11.4cm in trinexapac-ethyl treatment after TTD, followed by 4.1cm in inabenfide treatment after TTD compared to TTD treatment. A significant reduction in culm length occurred at the 3rd internode in inabenfide treatment applied at 40 days before heading (DBH), while trinexapac-ethyl application at 8 DBH reduced the 3rd>2nd>1st internode. The culm diameter of the 4th internode was increased by the application of trinexapac-ethyl following TTD compared to TTD treatment. Thickness of culm wall was significantly increased by trinexapac-ethyl but not by inabenfide applications. Lodging index was the highest in continuous flooding and the lowest in trinexapac-ethyl treatment after TTD. Subsequently, field lodging did not occur in plots treated by trinexapac-ethyl. Rice plants subjected to midsummer drainage or growth retardants showed higher ripened grain ratio and 1000-grain weight, resulting in higher rice yield. These results indicate that trinexapac-ethyl, which can be applied at the relatively later growth stage after proper judgement of lodging occurrence, could be a useful tool for reducing lodging in direct seeding rice culture on flooded paddy fields.

Improvement of Seedling Stand and Lodging Prevention in Direct Seeded Rice (벼 직파재배(直播栽培) 입묘율향상(立苗率向上)과 도복경감(倒伏輕減))

  • The results of recent researches for improvement of seedling stand in direct seeded rice on the dry paddy in Korea were summarized as the following ; a variety to be cultivated should be chosen the characteristics of high percentage germination under low temperature, shorter period of shoot emergence, and better growth of the mesocotyl and shoots. Meanwhile, there was 40% increase in seedling stand at the treatment of removal of the seed awn under using the drill seeder. After seeding the rice seed covered with soil of 3cm depth was better seedling emergence and also there was the hightest seedling emergence at the 70% of moisture content of the soil. In addition, the application of the Release containing GA 10% enabled to increase the seedling stand and furthermore it was effective under deep seeding depth. The optimum seeding date should be seeded around May 10 when mean air temperature is above 12-13$^{\circ}C$ so that may establish more less 70% in seedling stand. Based on an appropriate seedling stand of 150/$m^2$, the optimum seeding rate was 5kg/10a. It was the best in seeding method using drill seeder and the most desirable recommended seeding method was the drill seeder in terms of seedling stand. In order to improve seedling stand water management was more effective in canal irrigation and in drainage at 6hr after irrigation following by the seeding process. On the other hand, for the increase of seedling stand under flooded condition a variety might have characters being better germination at low concentration of dissolved oxygen and vertically deeper growing of the crown root. Also, seedling stand was able to increase with the seed coating of $CaO_2$in the flooded soil. It was possible to be seeded on the early part of May being mean air temperature of avove 10$^{\circ}C$ and the optimum seeding rate was 5kg/10a. For an effective water management water would be flooded up to 3cm depth for 2-3 weeks after seeding. The rice plant grown under the direct seeded cultivation might be not so much strong in lodging resistance compared to that grown under the transplanting and moreover direct seeded rice cultivation under flooded condition would be more weak growth of the rice plant than that on dry paddy. Meanwhile, the lodging would be affected by the seeding rate, the soil depth after seeding. and seeding method even in the same variety. In particular, roots in the lodging pattern of direct seeded rice cultivation under flooded condition were largely distributed on the soil surface so that resulted easily in the lodging. In general, the lodging resistance would be greater as seeding rate and amount of N fertilizer application are lower and soil depth after seeding is higher. Among the introduction of different seeding method the high ridged drill seeding method on dry paddy soil resulted in the lowest in the lodging index and also it was lower in the drill seeding method than in the scattering seeding method under flooded condition. In case of more than 150 seedlings per $m^2$ there was a severe lodging due to high lodging index at the 3rd and 4th internodes. The effective lodging prevention was able to at the treatment of the Inabenfide at 45 days before heading and the Uniconazol at 15 days before heading which caused the shortage by 10-15cm in culm length. Also, fertilizer management using split application of nitrogen would be contributed the reduction of lodging at the rate of 20-30-20-20-10%(basal-5th leaf stage-7th leaf stage-panicle initiation stage-heading stage) on the dry paddy soil.

Effects of no-till direct seeding on irrigation water and cost reduction - A field case study (무경운 직파재배가 논 용수량 및 비용절감에 미치는 효과 - 현장 사례 연구)

  • A field case study was performed to investigate the effect of shallow ponding in paddy field on irrigation water requirement of direct seeded rice. In addition, an economic analysis was made to see the effect of no-till direct seeded rice on cost reduction. A field study was performed at a 2.1ha paddy field in Kimjae city, Chonbuk province from 1991 to 1999. Various direct seeding methods such as dryland seeding, wetland seeding, and no-till wetland seeding were introduced. Then, cost reductions due to the direct seeding and no-till were calculated. In addition, to investigate the effect of shallow ponding on irrigation water requirement, field measurements such as irrigation water volume, drainage water volume, rainfall depth, and ponding depth, were made at a 40a plot within the same area in 1988 and 1990. The results of the shallow ponding study showed that the irrigation water depth, rainfall, and the drainage depth were 379mm, 458mm, and 448mm in 1988 growing season, and 274mm, 819mm, and 736mm in 1990, respectively. The shallow ponding irrigation method saved irrigation water by about 20% with higher yield compared with the traditional method. The economic analysis showed that won \640,000 per ha can be saved by direct seeding due to no nursery cost, and \1,220,000 per ha due to no-till and no nursery cost. The yields ranged 540 to 640 kg per 10a during the study period with an average of 590kg per 10a. If these cropping techniques with no-till direct seeding and shallow ponding depth for rice cropping prove to be advantageous with further study, they can be adopted for the most of the paddy fields in Korea.

Effects of Elevated $CO_2$ and Temperature on Competition between Rice and Echinochloa glabrescens Seedlings

  • The objective of this study was to determine how elevated $CO_2$ and temperature affected early growth and competition between direct seeded rice (Oryza sativa) and a common paddy weed (Echinochloa glabrascens). By using temperature gradient chambers. Rice and E. glabrescens were grown for 5 weeks at ratios of 1:0. 3:1 and 0:1 at three temperatures ($16.4^{\circ}C,\;19.8^{\circ}C,\;and\;22.2^{\circ}C$) and either in ambient (361ppm) or elevated (566ppm) $CO_2$. For both species. elevated $CO_2$ had no effect on mainstem leaf number while air temperature had a slight positive effect which was greater in E. glabrescens than rice. With elevated $CO_2$ rice leaf area index and plant height increased alightly in all species combinations but no increases were observed for E. Glabuescens. For rice in all combinations. elevated $CO_2$ tended to increase the rot and total biomass much more than any other growth parameters: the increases in root and total biomass resulting from elevated $CO_2$ ranged from 16% to 40%. depending on air temperature. At the lowest temperature, the decrease in rice biomass in combination with E. glabrescens was significantly greater at elevated $CO_2$ (18%) than ambient $CO_2$ (3%). At the highest temperature, however, the decrease in rice biomass at elevated $CO_2$ (22%) was less than that at ambient $CO_2$ (36%). The competitive ability of rice as measured by the decrease in biomass when grown in combination with E. glabrescens depended strongly on root growth and/or allocation. These results suggest that at higher temperatures elevated $CO_2$ could enhance the competitive ability of direct seeded rice during early growth. However, at lower temperatures. the competitive ability of E. glabrescens seems to be greater.

Distribution and Leaching of Basal Nitrogen in Direct Seeding Rice on Dry Paddy (벼 건답직파 재배에서 기비질소의 토층간 분포와 용탈)

  • Urea, which is the major nitrogenous fertilizer used in Korea, has been used inefficiently in direct-seeding on dry soil by farmers. This study was conducted to investigate changes in concentrations of basal N within soil layers and its loss during early stage of rice growth. Urea fertilizer was applied in the rates of 7, 5.25, 3.5, 1.75, 0kg- N /10a under direct-seeded rice in dry paddy soil. The concentrations of ammonium and nitrate were determined in soil samples with different depths during period from seeding to the 3rd leaf stage. Futhermore, N leaching was measured in lysimeter designed with pot in greenhouse. ${NH_4}^+ \; and\; {NO_3}^-$ adsorption by soil increased with increasing concentration of added urea and decreased as deeper in soil layers. ${NH_4}^+$ concentration reached its peak at 7 days after urea application (DAA) and disappeared almostly at 14 DAA. ${NO_3}^-$ reached its peak at 10 DAA and decreased slowly until 14 DAA. ${NO_3}^-$N leaching started next day after urea application and completed until 11 DAA. We concluded that most of basal N applied to direct-seeded paddy was lost by leaching and not useful for rice plant which was in stage of germination. It is urgent need to develop new nitrogen application method for direct-seeding rice on dry soil.

Changes of Weedy Rice Occurrence in Repeated Wet Direct Seeding and Alternate Transplanting/Wet Direct Seeding of Rice (벼 무논점파재배 연작과 이앙전환에 따른 잡초성벼 발생 양상)

  • Weedy rice is one of the major problems in direct-seeded rice field, resulting in poor rice quality and low grain yield. This study was carried out to evaluate the conversion effect to machine transplanting after wet-direct- seeding for 3 years on weedy rice occurrence, in comparison of repeated wet-direct-seeding. Occurrence of weedy rice in the continuous wet-hill-seeded and broadcasted field for 3 years increased 4 folds, when compared with that in machine transplanted rice paddy. In the first year of wet-direct-seeded field converted from machine transplanting, weedy rice occurrence did not increase, demonstrating lesser weedy rice in wet-hill-seeded than broadcasted field. These results indicate that alternate cultivation of wet-hill-seeding and machine transplanting is more effective to prevent weedy rice occurrence than the repeated wet-direct-seeding method for 3 years.
