  • Electrokinetic motion of fullerene ($C_{60}$) particles in liquid crystal (LC) medium under an in-plane electric field has been studied for the application to the electronic paper display. Fullerenes move in the direction of applied electric field due to interaction between the induced dipole moment on $C_{60}$ and external electric field at lower threshold voltages compared to other devices such as QR-LPD (Quick Response Liquid Powder Display) and TBD (Twisting Ball Display). We also confirmed the bistability of fullerene particles in LC medium and the results showed that the 87% and 81% of original reflectance or transmittance of image was retained after 24 hours and 48 hours respectively. Our studies show the possibility that fullerenes can be used for electronic paper display.

  • Electrorheological fluids(ERFs) show a rapid and reversible increase in apparent viscosity by applied electric field. It is called the electrorheological effect (ER effect). The reason for ER effect is the induction of an electric dipole in each particle, leading to the formation of clusters in the direction of the field, which resist fluid flow. Generally, the behavior of ER fluids has been modeled on those of Bingham fluids. But there are some differences between Bingham fluids and ER fluids. The visualization of ER fliuds are presented and ER effects by the forming, growing and breaking of clusters are discussed. In the low shear rate area, the pressure drop is measured by a pressure sensor and the formation of ER particles is visualized by video camera. The reason for the nonlinear behavior of ER fluids at low shear rate is explained through results of visualization. As result, the behavior of ER fluids is nonlinear at low shear rate with overshoot area because it is different to from the clusters according to the strength of electric field. The gap of electrodes becomes narrow because of the cluster layer occurrence near to electrodes in any conditions.

  • This study evaporates ZnO layer thickness differently with RF sputtering method on Si Wafer(n-100). This study is performed to examine the characteristics of photon energy and dielectric loss according to the thickness of ZnO and increase the reliability and reproduction of ZnO thin film. It is confirmed that the variation of electric Permittivity by frequency is resulted from the formation of particles within thin film, the particle size and the polarization on grain boundary. Peak of electric Permittivity value of thin film has slower and less value in early low wavelength by the coulomb force involved in carrier combination according to the increase of frequency. Reversal of electric Permittivity values is induced by dipole polarization shown in the dielectric of thin film. Complex electric constant $({\varepsilon}_1{\varepsilon}_2)$ has larger peak values as it’s thickness is thinner and then it is larger according to the increase of frequency. Electric Permittivity by photon energy has large value in imaginary number and is reduced exponentially by the increase of carrier density according to that of photon energy.

  • This paper temperature gradient thermally stimulated surface potentian (TG-TSSP) in measurements are applied to the study of the polarity of trapped and ionic carriers in cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) filsm. In the thermally stimulated current in uniform temperature (TSC) of XLPE five peaks appear as indicated of the A B C D and E. In this paper A (at about -120$^{\circ}C$) D (at about 70$^{\circ}C$) and E (at about 110$^{\circ}C$) peaks are investigated. A peak is due to the biassing voltage and biassing temperature. Appear in to the glass transition temperature territory and caused in to the polarization of dipole. D peak is due to the depolarization of ionic space charge and E peak due to the detrapping of carriers injected from the electrodes. TG-TSSP and TSSP are measured to study the polarity of ionic carrier (D peak). In the unsatureated region of ionic space charge polarization, TG-TSSP is lower than TSSP during the initial stage of heating. Result of the experiment for E peak, TG-TSSP is higher than TSSP during the initial stage of heating and these results do not depend on the polarity of biassing voltage, and E peak is concerned with positive carriers (Holes).

  • In order to look into the internal structure and electrical properties of insulating Silicone rubbers added reinforcing fillers ; Silica(0-140 phr ), and to examine the behavior of charged particles, and the properties of thermally stimulated current (TSC) are investigated, respectively. From the TSC which are formed by applying the electric field of 2~5 ㎸/mm to specimen at temperature range from -150 to $270^{\circ}C$, the results arp as following. In the case of non-filled specimen, four peaks of $\delta$, $\gamma$ , $\beta$ and u are obtained at the temperature of $-120^{\circ}C$, $-60^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$ and $130^{\circ}C$, respectively and the case of filled specimen, three peaks of $\delta$, ${\alpha}_2$ and ${\alpha}_1$ are observed at the temperature of of $-120^{\circ}C$, $80^{\circ}C$ and $130^{\circ}C$, respectively. The origins of these peaks are that, the $\delta$ peak seems to the result from the contribution of side chain methyl radical, and the $\beta$ peak from the depolarization of space charge polarization owing to added imputity during during manufacturing specimens, and the $\beta$ peak from the orientation of $Si-CH_3$dipole, and the ${\alpha}_2$ near the temperature of $130^{\circ}C$ from carboxyl acid that is formed by the thermal oxidation of high temperature.

  • Shape control of metal nanocrystals has broad applications, including catalysis, plasmonics, and sensing. It was found that controlling the atomic arrangement on metal nanocrystal surfaces affects many properties, including the electronic dipole or work function. Tuning the surface structure of exposed facets of metal nanocrystals was enabled by shape control. We investigated the effect of shape on nanomechanical properties, including friction and adhesion forces. Two nanoparticles systems, high-index {321} and low-index {100}, were used as model nanoparticle surfaces. Scanning force microscopy was used to probe nanoscale friction and adhesion. Because of the abundant presence of high-density atomic steps and kinks, high-index faceted nanoparticles have a higher surface energy than low-index faceted cubic nanoparticles. Due to this high surface energy, high-index faceted particles have shown stronger adhesion and higher friction than low-index nanoparticles. We discuss the results in light of the differences in surface energy as well as the effect of capping layers in the measurement.

  • Submicron-sized $CeO_2:Er^{3+}/Yb^{3+}$ upconversion phosphor particles were synthesized by spray pyrolysis, and their luminescent properties were characterized by changing the concentration of $Er^{3+}$ and $Yb^{3+}$. $CeO_2:Er^{3+}/Yb^{3+}$ showed an intense green and red emission due to the $^4S_{3/2}$ or $^2H_{11/2}{\rightarrow}^4I_{15/2}$ and $^4F_{9/2}{\rightarrow}^4I_{15/2}$ transition of $Er^{3+}$ ions, respectively. In terms of the emission intensity, the optimal concentrations of Er and Yb were 1.0 % and 2.0%, respectively, and the concentration quenching was found to occur via the dipole-dipole interaction. Upconversion mechanism was discussed by using the dependency of emission intensities on pumping powers and considering the dominant depletion processes of intermediate energy levels for the red and green emission with changing the $Er^{3+}$ concentration. An energy transfer from $Yb^{3+}$ to $Er^{3+}$ in $CeO_2$ host was mainly involved in ground-state absorption (GSA), and non-radiative relaxation from $^4I_{11/2}$ to $^4I_{13/2}$ of $Er^{3+}$ was accelerated by the $Yb^{3+}$ co-doping. As a result, the $Yb^{3+}$ co-doping led to greatly enhance the upconversion intensity with increasing ratios of the red to green emission. Finally, it is revealed that the upconversion emission is achieved by two photon processes in which the linear decay dominates the depletion of intermediate energy levels for green and red emissions for $CeO_2:Er^{3+}/Yb^{3+}$ phosphor.

  • SrMoO4:RE3+ (RE=Dy, Sm, Tb, Eu, Dy/Sm) phosphors are prepared by co-precipitation method. The effects of the type and the molar ratio of activator ions on the structural, morphological, and optical properties of the phosphor particles are investigated. X-ray diffraction data reveal that all the phosphors have a tetragonal system with a main (112) diffraction peak. The emission spectra of the SrMoO4 phosphors doped with several activator ions indicate different multicolor emissions: strong yellow-emitting light at 573 nm for Dy3+, red light at 643 nm for Sm3+, green light at 545 nm for Tb3+, and reddish orange light at 614 nm for Eu3+ activator ions. The Dy3+ singly-doped SrMoO4 phosphor shows two dominant emission peaks at 479 and 573 nm corresponding to the 4F9/26H15/2 magnetic dipole transition and 4F9/26H13/2 electric dipole transition, respectively. For Dy3+ and Sm3+ doubly-doped SrMoO4 phosphors, two kinds of emission peaks are observed. The two emission peaks at 479 and 573 nm are attributed to 4F9/26H15/2 and 4F9/26H13/2 transitions of Dy3+ and two emission bands centered at 599 and 643 nm are ascribed to 4G5/26H7/2 and 4G5/26H9/2 transitions of Sm3+. As the concentration of Sm3+ increases from 1 to 5 mol%, the intensities of the emission bands of Dy3+ gradually decrease; those of Sm3+ slowly increase and reach maxima at 5 mol% of Sm3+ ions, and then rapidly decrease with increasing molar ratio of Sm3+ ions due to the concentration quenching effect. Fluorescent security inks based on as-prepared phosphors are synthesized and designed to demonstrate an anti-counterfeiting application.

  • $Y_{1-x}VO_4:Eu_x^{3+}$ red phosphors were synthesized with changing the mol ratios of $Eu^{3+}$ ions by using the solid-state reaction method. The crystalline structure of phosphors was found to be a tetragonal system with the maximum diffraction intensity at $25.02^{\circ}$. The grain particles showed the truncated hexagonal patterns with a very homogeneous size distribution at 0.05 mol of $Eu^{3+}$ ion. The excitation spectra of the phosphor ceramics were composed of a broad band centered at 303 nm and weak narrow multilines peaked in the range of 360-420 nm. The dominant emission spectrum was the strong red emission centered at 619 nm due to the $^5D_0{\rightarrow}^7F_2$ electric dipole transition. The experimental results suggest that the optimum doping mol ratio of $Eu^{3+}$ ions for preparing the red phosphors is 0.10 mol with the asymmetry ratio of 5.21.
