A seismic evaluation is made of the response to horizontal ground shaking of cantilever retaining walls using the finite element model in three dimensional space whose verification is provided analytically through the modal analysis technique in case of the assumptions of fixed base, complete bonding behavior at the wall-soil interface, and elastic behavior of soil. Thanks to the versatility of the finite element model, the retained medium is then idealized as a uniform, elastoplastic stratum of constant thickness and semi-infinite extent in the horizontal direction considering debonding behavior at the interface in order to perform comprehensive soil-structure interaction (SSI) analyses. The parameters varied include the flexibility of the wall, the properties of the soil medium, and the characteristics of the ground motion. Two different finite element models corresponding with flexible and rigid wall configurations are studied for six different soil types under the effects of two different ground motions. The response quantities examined incorporate the lateral displacements of the wall relative to the moving base and the stresses in the wall in all directions. The results show that the wall flexibility and soil properties have a major effect on seismic behavior of cantilever retaining walls and should be considered in design criteria of cantilever walls. Furthermore, the results of the numerical investigations are expected to be useful for the better understanding and the optimization of seismic design of this particular type of retaining structure.

Thermal management of a junction box of a passenger car has recently become more challenging due to its smaller size and larger current capacity. Thus, it is essential to perform the thermal optimization of a junction box in its design on an early stage of vehicle design. In this study, 3 dimensional CFD simulation with experimental measurement has been done to study for better thermal management of the junction box. First, the study of thermal characteristics of electric relays in the junction box has revealed that each surface of the relay has very different thermal resistance. In addition, an idea to install a cooling fan on the junction box has been studied and it was found that the forced cooling method was not effective on the system to keep the thermal resistance to the reasonable level of the junction box. Finally, the effect of external flows around the junction box on the temperatures of the relays, fuses, etc. has been studied and the result shows that the installation of the junction box at the proper place in an engine room can avoid any unnecessary overdesign in thermal management.
n-type PERT (passivated emitter, rear totally diffused) bifacial solar cells with boron and phosphorus diffusion as p+ emitter and n+ BSF (back surface field) have attracted significant research interest recently. In this work, the influences of wafer thickness, bulk lifetime, emitter, BSF on the photovoltaic characteristics of solar cells are discussed. The performance of the solar cell is determined by using one-dimensional solar cell simulation software PC1D. The simulation results show that the key role of the BSF is to decrease the surface doping concentration reducing the recombination and thus, increasing the cell efficiency. A lightly phosphorus doped BSF (LD BSF) was experimentally optimized to get low surface dopant concentration for n type bifacial solar cells. Pre-oxidation combined with a multi-plateau drive-in, using limited source diffusion was carried out before pre-deposition. It could reduce the surface dopant concentration with minimal impact on the sheet resistance.
In the present paper we studied experimentally fundamental optimization of oxygen enriched pyrolysis melting incinerator, Characteristics of this system was confirmed dealing with the gas flow and combustion properties for the inside secondary air injection. The experiment setup has a disposal rate of 30kg/hr which was measured by the inside temperature and gas. Along with above experiments, the three-dimensional computation was employed to analyse the combustion fluid dynamics and gas residence time. Equations for turbulence and heat - transmission as well as chemical reactions were solved by using common codes. The experimental combustion chamber was composed of staged combustion types structure for reducing NOx. Finally, it was verified that the control of the secondary air and air ratio of thermo stack were important. In the computational analysis, it showed reasonable agreement with the experimental results regarding the temperature and discharged gas concentration.

When a part of data is unobserved the marginal likelihood of parameters given the observed data often involves analytically intractable high dimensional integral and hence it is hard to find the maximum likelihood estimate of the parameters. Simulated maximum likelihood(SML) method which estimates the marginal likelihood via Monte Carlo importance sampling and optimize the estimated marginal likelihood has been used in many applications. A key issue in SML is to find a good proposal density from which Monte Carlo samples are generated. The optimal proposal density is the conditional density of the unobserved data given the parameters and the observed data, and attempts have been given to find a good approximation to the optimal proposal density. Algorithms which adaptively improve the proposal density have been widely used due to its simplicity and efficiency. In this paper, we describe a fully adaptive algorithm which has been used by some practitioners but has not been well recognized in statistical literature, and evaluate its estimation performance and robustness via a simulation study. The simulation study shows a great improvement in the order of magnitudes in the mean squared error, compared to non-adaptive or partially adaptive SML methods. Also, it is shown that the fully adaptive SML is robust in a sense that it is insensitive to the starting points in the optimization routine.
Scanning Laser Optical Tweezers(SLOT) is an optical instrument frequently employed on a microscope with laser being delivered through its various ports. In most SLOT systems, a mechanical tilt stage with a mirror on top is used to dynamically move the laser focal point in two-dimensions. The focal point acts as a tweezing spot, trapping nearby microscopic objects. By adding a mechanical translational stage with a lens, SLOT can be expanded to work in three-dimensions. When two mechanical stages operate together, the focal point can address a closed three-dimensional volume that we call a workspace. It would be advantageous to have a large workspace since it means one can trap and work on multiple objects without interruptions, such as translating the microscope stage. However, previous studies have paid less consideration of the volumetric size of the workspace. In this paper, we propose a new method for designing a SLOT such that its workspace is maximized through optimization. The proposed method utilizes a matrix based ray tracing method and genetic algorithm(GA). To demonstrate the performance of the proposed method, experimental results are shown.

This paper presents a new method for assessing the efficiency of production process plans using tolerance chart to lower production cost. The tolerance chart is used to predict the accuracy of a part that is to be produced following the process plan, and to carry out the quantitative measurement on the efficiency of the process plan. By comparing the values of design tolerances and their corresponding resultant tolerances calculated using the tolerance chart, the process plan that is incapable of satisfying the design requirements and the faulty production operations can be identified. Similarly, the process plan that imposes unnecessarily high accuracy and wasteful production operations can also be identified. For the latter, a quantitative measure on the efficiency of the process plan is introduced. The higher the unnecessary cost of the production, the poor is the efficiency of the process plan. A coefficient is introduced for measuring the process plan efficiency. The coefficient also incorporates two weighting factors to reflect the difficulty of manufacturing operations and number of dimensional tolerances involved. To facilitate the identification of the machining operations and the machined surfaces, which are related to the unnecessarily tight resultant tolerances caused by the process plan, a rooted tree representation of the tolerance chart is introduced, and its use is demonstrated. An example is presented to illustrate the new method. This research introduces a new quantitative process plan evaluation method that may lead to the optimization of process plans.

By the need for high-speed data transmission in PCB, the studies on the optical PCB has been conducted with optical interconnection and its packaging technology. Particularly, the polymer-based optical interconnection has been extensively studied with the advantages such as cost-effective and ease of process. For high-efficiency and passive alignment, the studies were performed using the 45 degree mirrors, MT connector, and etc. In this work, integrated PLC device and fiber alignment array block was fabricated by using imprint technology to solve the alignment and array problem of optical device and the optical fiber. The fabricated integrated block for optical interconnection of PLC device has achieved higher precision of decreasing the dimensional error of the patterns by optimization of process and its insertion loss has an average value of 4.03dB, lower than criteria specified by international standard. In addition, a optical waveguide with built-in lens has been proposed for high-efficiency and passive alignment. By simulation, it was confirmed that the proposed structure has higher coupling efficiency than conventional no-lens structure and has the broad tolerance for the spatial offset of optical waveguide.
This paper presents a novel ARAP (as-rigid-as-possible) approach to real-time simulation of physics-based deformation. To cope with one, two and three dimensional deformable bodies in an efficient, robust and uniform manner, we introduce a deformation graph of oriented particles and formulate the corresponding ARAP deformation energy. For stable time integration of the oriented particles, we develop an implicit integration scheme formulated in a variational form. Our method seeks the optimal positions and rotations of the oriented particles by iteratively applying an alternating local/global optimization scheme. The proposed method is easy to implement and computationally efficient to simulate complex deformable models in real time.
