  • Problem solving competency has always been a prime issue in education, and it is defined as core skills of a life competency or as 21st century skills that students need to successfully learn. This study aims to discover the scope and impact of digital textbooks on students' competencies. This study also examines meaningful differences brought about using digital textbooks and taking lessons specifically adapted to improve 5th grade students' problem solving competencies. The pretest-posttest control group design was adopted and a performance-based measurement tool for problem solving competency was developed and applied. The results indicate that the classes using digital textbooks achieved higher scores in problem solving competency. Also, a lesson that was specifically adapted with the aim to improve students' problem solving competency had a positive influence on students' achievement. Moreover, there was reciprocal influence between using digital textbooks and adapting instructions to improve problem solving competency. In conclusion, the effect of digital textbooks should be discussed further while also considering the influence of teachers' instructional strategies.

  • The purpose of this study is to present innovative approaches for u-Learning environment in public education with Digital Textbook. The Korean Government has been making efforts to introduce the u-Learning environment to maximize the learning effect in public education with Digital Textbook. However, there are only a few studies that analyze the effectiveness of u-Learning environment and Digital Textbook. This paper reviews the current status of u-Learning environment in Korea and analyzes the satisfaction level with Digital Textbooks. The first survey regarding technological factors was collected from 197 students. The results of the survey revealed that the level of satisfaction has declined over a year. The weakness of the study is that the sample frame is insufficient and survey questions did not reflect diverse factors of learning effectiveness. To supplement these shortcomings, 2,226 students were asked about learning performance. The results of the survey showed that the satisfaction with Digital Textbooks is much higher than that of paper textbooks. However, this paper is limited to u-Learning environments in public education. Therefore, research needs to be improved by reflecting both public and private sectors of education in following studies. This paper suggests useful guidelines to educators in improving their u-Learning environment.

  • This paper analyzed the programming education specialized lessons presented in two types of elementary school mathematics textbooks according to the revised Japanese curriculum in 2017. First, this paper presented in detail how each activity is connected to Korean mathematics areas, what elements of mathematics can be learned through programming education, how each activity is structured, and how the actual programming according to the textbook activities is structured. In Japanese textbooks, geometry and measurement areas were presented the most among Korean mathematics content areas, and mathematical elements such as sequences, rules, and algorithms were most implemented for learning. Digital learning tools that make up actual programming present more elements than those presented in the textbooks and are presented in great detail so that students can do actual programming. Lastly, in blocks, motion, control, and calculation blocks were used a lot. Based on these research results, this study provides implications when conducting programming-related education in Korea.

  • With the ever-increasing queries related to temporal (or time-related) information, such as the product launching time, in search engine, most web pages will be augmented with such information in the future. Meanwhile, the gradual emergence of the use of electronic textbooks (or e-Textbooks), which enrich the traditional paper-based textbooks with multimedia contents such as interactive quizzes and multimedia-based simulations, has led us to infer that e-Textbooks will be blended with temporal information to support learning. The use of temporal information helps teachers and students to understand the level of prior knowledge required to study a topic, as well as the sequence of learning activities and related sub-topics, that best attains the educational goals. This paper presents a simple yet efficient tool called TimeMap, which is based on mind mapping, to create an e-Textbook called TimeBook that takes account of time-related curriculum and the ability of students to learn via collaboration.

  • This study analyzed the effects of interactivity on the learning attitude in the tablet PC-based digital textbook environment. Most of digital textbook studies focused on comparison of learning effect between digital textbook and paper textbook. This study, instead, focused on the interaction between students and digital textbook, and examined the hypothesis that, in the digital textbook-based learning environment, interactivity factors affect learning attitude. The results showed that active control, two-way communication, and synchronicity have significant effects on the learning attitude. Those findings indicate that it's necessary to effectively realize interactivity in the process of developing digital textbooks. Also, important implication is not the fixed interactivity but how students perceive the digital textbook and make use of it. Therefore, for the interactive digital textbook, perceived user control, two-way communication, and synchronicity should be realized properly.
