  • DTM(Digital Terrain Model) can play a key rule in a great number of the fields of construction Engineering. One of the most important application fields is to determine volume in that the total construction expenses is usually calculated through this. It therefore is necessary to the study on improving the precise of the determination using DTM on account of saving time and cost. On this study, 1:5000 topographic maps issued by NGI in 15 districts involved in Pusan city was digitalized to generate DTM at first. After this step, not only was the determination of the volume as well as readjusted area and height done for the sake of estimating the changable topography caused by cut & fill volume in future but also provided the model to calculate it as results. In addition, comparison among the interpolations, such as Inverse Distance Method and Nearest Neighbor, was respectively done to look over the differences of the volume estimated from each interpolation and also to find the most suitable method. As a result, the former yielded the largest values of area and the volume while the latter gave the smallest ones. Moreover, the values estimated on this study were closely similar to ones obtained by the government of Pusan.

  • Accurate 3D models in urban areas are essential for a variety of applications, such as virtual visualization, CIS, and mobile communications. LiDAR(Light Detection and Ranging) is a relatively new technology for directly obtaining 3D points. Because Manual 3D data reconstruction from LiDAR data is very costly and time consuming, many researchs is focused on the automatic extraction of the useful data. In this paper, we classified ground and non-ground points data from LiDAR data by using filtering, and we reconstructed the DTM(Digital Terrain Model) using ground points data, buildings using nonground points data. After the reconstruction, we assessed the accuracy of the DTM and buildings. As a result of, DTM from LiDAR data were 0.16m and 0.59m in high raised apartments areas and low house areas respectively, and buildings were matched with the accuracy of a l/5,000 digital map.

  • This paper aims to estimate the carbon dioxide stocks in forests using airborne LiDAR data with a density of approximate 4.4 points per meter square. To achieve this goal, a processing chain consisting of bare earth Digital Terrain Model(DTM) extraction and individual tree top detection has been developed. As results of this experiment, the reliable DTM with type-II errors of 3.32% and tree positions with overall accuracy of 66.26% were extracted in the study area. The total estimated carbon dioxide stocks in the study area using extracted 3-D forests structures well suited with the traditional method by field measurements upto 7.2% error level. This results showed that LiDAR technology is highly valuable for replacing the existing forest resources inventory.

  • The digital terrain model (DTM) or digital elevation model (DEM) is commonly used in representing the continuous variation of relief over space. One of the most frequent applications is to display the three dimensional view of the landform concerned. In this paper, the altitude matrices-regular grid cell format of the elevation in Mt. Kyeryong National Park were used in developing the three dimensional view software for the first time in Korea. It required the removal of hidden lines or surfaces. To do this, it was necessary to identify those surfaces and line segments that are visible and those that are invisible. Then, only the visible portions of the landform were displayed. The assumption that line segments are used to approximate contour surfaces by polygons was used in developing the three dimensional orthographic view. In order to remove hidden lines, the visibility test and masking algorithms were used. The software was developed in the engineering workstation, SUN 3/280 at the Institute of Space Science and Astronomy using 'C' in UNIX operating system. The software developed in this paper can be used in various fields. Some of them are as follows : (1) Landscape design and planning for identifying viewshed area(line of sight maps) (2) For planning the route selection and the facility location (3) Flight simulation for pilot training (4) Other landscape planning or civil engineering purposes

  • DTM data evaluation regards accuracy and efficiency as its most important parameters, and these two elements are sensitively influenced by the sampling technique employed and its procedure. This study attempts to improve sampling techniques and evaluate the accuracy of DTM based on earth volume calculation, using aerial photography and field survey information as basic DTM data, and a regular grid and progressive sampling method for sampling process. Especially, the progressive sampling has employed different combinations of threshold and sampling criteria, that is, parameters influential on efficiency and accuracy, for the purpose of numerical tests intended to permit comparative analysis. The tests have resulted in the findings that in progressive sampling its grid density fits in well with given terrain characteristics in proportion to their variability. and that threshold and accuracy contain close mutual relations in which an increased threshold bringing more efficency but less accuracy. It follows, therefore. that a threshold, when appropriately determined, can be of very efficient use for considerably broad applications, and particularly, will play a significant role in its application to such general civil engineering as earth volume calculation.

  • A lava tube is one of the hot issues of lunar science because it is regarded as a good candidate place for setting a lunar base. Recently much effort has been made to find lunar lava tubes. However, preceding works mainly made use of high-resolution lunar surface image data in conjunction with geomorphological consideration to present some lava tube candidates. Yet, those candidates stay no more than indirect indications. We propose a new data analysis technique of High Frequency (HF) radar observation data to find lunar lava tubes of which location depth is smaller than the range resolution of the radar pulse. Such shallow target echoes cannot be resolved from surface echoes, which presents the different location of the lunar surface compared to that of real lunar surface. The proposed technique instead finds the surface range (distance from LRS to the reflector of the most intense signal) anomaly which occurs as a result of the low range resolution of LRS pulse. We applied this technique to the surface range of Kaguya Lunar Radar Sounder (LRS) data. The surface range was deduced to make LRS surface elevation which was compared with the average surface elevation of Kaguya Digital Terrain Model (DTM). An anomalous discrepancy of the surface elevation was found in the Rima Galilaei area, which suggests the existence of a shallow lava tube.

  • In Digital Terrain Model(DTM), more accurate data acquisition method is of importance. This paper has the purpose of accuracy analysis of progressive sampling method, one of data acquisition method. Especially, The following in accuracy analysis are compared and analyzed. -Comparison and analysis for position error between the digital contour lines using digital terrain model and the conventional contour lines using A-10 Plotter. -Analysis for height error of interpolation points according to application of progressive sampling method. For above numerical tests, Computer Program related to auto-carto of contour lines was made up. As a result of tests, threshold and sampling criterion have close of mutual relation to accuracy. Particularly, it was found that auto-carto of contour lines-threshold of 1.0 m and standard criterion-almost concurred in conventional contour lines.

  • UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) is widely used in space information construction, agriculture, fisheries, weather observation, communication, and entertainment fields because they are cheaper and easier to operate than manned aircraft. In particular, UAV have attracted much attention due to the speed and cost of data acquisition in the field of spatial information construction. However, ortho image images produced using UAVs are distorted in buildings and forests. It is necessary to solve these problems in order to utilize the geospatial information field. In this study, fixed wing, rotary wing, vertical take off and landing type UAV were used to detect distortions of ortho image of UAV under various conditions, and various object areas such as construction site, urban area, and forest area were captured and analysed. Through the research, it was found that the redundancy of the unmanned aerial vehicle image is the biggest factor of the distortion phenomenon, and the higher the flight altitude, the less the distortion phenomenon. We also proposed a method to reduce distortion of orthoimage by lowering the resolution of original image using DTM (Digital Terrain Model) to improve distortion. Future high-quality unmanned aerial vehicles without distortions will contribute greatly to the application of UAV in the field of precision surveying.
