  • Representation of building internal space is an active research area as the need for more geometrically accurate and visually realistic increases. 3 dimensional representation is common ground of research for disciplines such as computer graphics, architectural design and engineering and Geographic Information System (GIS). In many cases CAD plans are the starting point of reconstruction of 3D building models. The main objectives of building reconstruction in GIS applications are visualization and spatial analysis. Hence, CAD plans need to be preprocessed and edited to adapt to the data models of GIS SW and then georeferenced to enable spatial analysis. This study automated the preprocessing of CAD data using AutoCAD VBA (Visual Basic Application), and the processed data was topologically restructured for further analysis in GIS environment. Accuracy of georeferencing CAD data was also examined by comparing the results of coordinate transformation by using digital maps and GPS measurements as the sources of ground control points. The reconstructed buildings were then applied to visualization and network modeling.

  • The airborne LiDAR which was introduced in the early 2000's provides the point data. The new methods for the verification of LiDAR materials with high accuracy which is different from the existing airborne survey are needed. In accordance with the rules of airborne laser survey which were enacted in 2009, the verifications by three methods of Unmeasured Rate and point accuracy, point density have been executed, and Unmeasured Rate is to evaluate the rate for the presence of points within uniform grids except non-reflective areas such as watershed areas. For the calculation of Unmeasured Rate, non-reflective areas should be removed by all means, and in case of normal LiDAR materials, as there are scant points for watershed areas, watershed areas should be divided by additional spatial information. So, in this study, the watershed areas were extracted using domain extension technique from the high resolution CIR images of 0.3m grade. In addition, in order to compare the accuracy of Unmeasured Rate calculated, the comparative analysis of the Unmeasured Rate calculated by digital maps has been done. In conclusion, we found that 1I1e accuracy of Unmeasured Rate extracted by domain extension technique is similar to the value extracted by digitizing technique.

  • This study was conducted to predict the changes in forest biomass in different ecoprovinces and forest types under climate change scenario based on cumulative data (i.e., digital forest site and climate maps, National Forest Inventory data) and various prediction models. The results from this study showed that predicted changes over time in biomass varied according to ecoprovince and forest type in Korea. A reduction in biomass was predicted for all forest types associated with the mountain, southeastern hilly, and southwestern hilly ecoprovinces. On the other hand, the biomass was predicted to increase for the coniferous forest and mixed-forest types in the central hilly ecoprovince. Furthermore, increases in biomass are predicted for all forest types, except coniferous forests, in the coastal ecoprovince. The results from this study provide a basis for developing technology to predict forest impacts due to climate change by predicting changes in forest biomass based on the estimation of site index.

  • It is noted that the paper mapping system for University Building Facility has many limitations in terms of data maintenance, real-time GIS data acquisition, and economic efficiency. The aim of this research was to evaluate an operational potential of an on site real-time mobile GIS technique to resolve the problem faced in the university. The idea is based upon the recent trends in the field of 'Telecommunication and Information Technology' that uses a PDA (personal Digital Assistants), wireless network computing, mobile computing, etc. A real time mobile GIS approach has been adopted, in which a PDA is linked to a wireless internet and field workers record data on the computer at the site and analyse data on site. While there should be a considerable number and variety of factors associated with real-time mobile GIS quality, this research focuses on three criteria that are identified as fundamental to customer requirements; (1) data quarry (2) spatial analysis (3) real-time GIS database building. 'Art--empirical study for a case study facility has been conducted to confirm the validity for the system. The system has been checked experimentally, enabled the field users to quarry the data required simply and execute spatial analysis (buffer, overlay etc.,) accommodating versatile alternatives on the site. Detailed visual maps can be generated over large areas quickly and easily. The PDA interface, in particular, were ideally suited for field users to interactively displaying positional information with attribute data. This system has shown to be quite convenient to maintaining a highly reliable database since it could playa crucial role in documenting at real-time basis temporal and spatial changes occurred in the facilities. It is anticipated that this research output will greatly serve to introduce the reliable and cost-effective facility mapping system in the university by overcoming serious constraints suffered from the past non-real time mobile GIS approach.

  • This study was carried out to estimate the area of damaged forest and the volume of stand tree in burned area, Mt. Weol-A in eastern Chinju, Korea using digital maps derived from supervised classification of Landsat thematic mapper(TM) imagery as reference data. Criterion laser estimator and WinDENDRO$^{tm}$(v. 6.3b) system as a computer-aided tree ring measuring system were used to measure a volume and age of sampled tree. The sample site had been chosen in unburned areas having the same terrain condition and forest type of burned areas. The tree age, diameter at breast height, tree height and volume of the sample tree selected from sample site in unburned area were 27years, 20.9cm, 9.7m and $0.1396m^3$ respectively. Total stand volume of sample site was estimated $2.9316m^3$/0.04ha, Damaged stand volume evaluated to about $16,007m^3$ in the burned area of 218.4ha.

  • Recently mean stand height has been added as new attribute to forest type maps, but it is often too costly and time consuming to manually measure 9,100,000 points from countrywide stereo aerial photos. In addition, tree heights are frequently measured around tombs and forest edges, which are poor representations of the interior tree stand. This work proposes an estimation of mean stand height using an image-based point cloud, which was extracted from stereo aerial photo with FUSION S/W. Then, a digital terrain model was created by filtering the DSM point cloud and subtracting the DTM from DSM, resulting in nDSM, which represents object heights (buildings, trees, etc.). The RMSE was calculated to compare differences in tree heights between those observed and extracted from the nDSM. The resulting RMSE of average total plot height was 0.96 m. Individual tree heights of the whole study site area were extracted using the USDA Forest Service's FUSION S/W. Finally, mean stand height was produced by averaging individual tree heights in a stand polygon of the forest type map. In order to automate the mean stand height extraction using photogrammetric methods, a module was developed as an ArcGIS add-in toolbox.

  • In accordance with the completion of the spatial database building works in the central and/or local government authorities as well as the rapid popularization of various information services through internet, it is heavily required to provide spatial information services through World Wide Web. To provide a qualified spatial information service, it is crucial to have a Web-based GIS (Geographic Information Service) service system equipped with the publicity, the convenient accessibility, and the easy-to-use user interface. In this paper, we introduce a new component system for Web-based spatial information services based on the OpenGIS Simple Feature specification for OLE/COM[3] and OLE DB specification[4]. The important functionality of a Web-based spatial information service system includes its accessibility of various existing GIS server system and huge databases in addition to the resolution of response-time delay problems caused by transmitting a large amount of digital maps via internet[6]. To cope with these problems, our component system has been designed to access heterogeneous databases in transparent manner and to support vector-based and/or image-based image production techniques for shortening transmission time.

  • Recently, landslide disasters caused by severe rain storms and typhoons have been frequently reported. Due to the geomorphologic characteristics of Korea, considerable portion of urban area and infrastructures such as road and railway have been constructed near mountains. These infrastructures may encounter the risk of landslide and debris flow. It is important to evaluate the highly risky locations of landslide and to prepare measures for the protection of landslide in the process of construction planning. In this study, a landslide-risk prediction equation is proposed based on the statistical analysis of 423 landslide data set obtained from field surveys, disaster reports on national road, and digital maps of landslide area. Each dataset includes geomorphologic characteristics, soil properties, rainfall information, forest properties and hazard history. The comparison between the result of proposed equation and actual occurrence of landslide shows 92 percent in the accuracy of classification. Since the input for the equation can be provided within short period and low cost, and the results of equation can be easily incorporated with hazard map, the proposed equation can be effectively utilized in the analysis of landslide-risk for large mountainous area.

  • It will be a real good news fer the people who were lost their hometown by the construction of a large dam to be restored to the farmer state. Focused on Cheung-pyung around where most part were submerged by the Chungju large Dam founded in eurly 1980s, It used remote sensing image restoration Technique in this study in order to restore topographical features before the flood with stereo effects. We gathered comparatively good satellite photos and remotely sensed digital images, then its made a new fusion image from these various satellite images and the topographical map which had been made before the water filled by the DAM. This task was putting together two kinds of different timed images. And then, we generated DEM including the outskirts of that area as matching current contour lines with the map. That could be a perfect 3D image of test areas around before when it had been water filled by making perspective images from all directions included north, south, east and west, fer showing there in 3 dimensions. Also, for close range visiting made of flying simulation can bring to experience their real space at that time. As a result of this experimental task, it made of new fusion images and 3-D perspective images and simulation live images by remotely sensed photos and images, old paper maps about vanished submerged Dam areas and gained of possibility 3-D terrain image restoration about submerged area by large Dam construction.

  • High resolution satellite images have to be oriented and geometrically processed from GCPs(Ground Control Points) to generate precise DEMs(Digital Elevation Models) and topographic maps. In Korea, thousands of national UCPS(Unified Control Points) are established and distributed all over the country by the Korean NGII(National Geographic Information Institute). For that reason, UCPs can be easily searched and downloaded by the national-control-point-record-issues system. Following the study, we suggested the sky-view and road-view from web-portals for searching and identifying UCPs on the images. To evaluate the usefulness of UCPs in RPCs(rational polynomial coefficients) adjustment of the high resolution satellite images, the one UCP, which of using simple the control point, has been applied to adjust the vendor-provided RPCs of the KOMPSAT-3 images. As a result, the positioning error of corrected RPCs was approximately one pixel and one meter. From this experiment, we conclude that the UCPs will be able to replace the survey GCPs for mapping with the satellite images or aerial images.
