Recently, artificial reefs (ARs) have been frequently used primarily owing to the development in AR materials and projects for relatively complicated, large ARs. Among several engineering issues of ARs, wake region of an AR has been characterized because these regions have a high probability of recruiting seaweed spores, providing an energy saving zone, and facilitating deposition of sediments, nutrients, and bio-deposits. To characterize an efficiency index of an AR wake region and its dependency on the prevailing water flow directions, this study proposes a so-called efficiency index diagram. This characterization is done by normalizing the wake volumes with respect to the real AR volume and illustrating how efficiency indices vary with respect to the inlet flow directions. As a result, according to the diagram characteristics such as an averaged efficiency index, fundamental symmetric angle, secure angles, and principal directions, we can easily figure out how a target AR should be aligned along the main water flows to maximize the wake region around the AR. In addition, six ARs are considered and their efficiency index diagrams are illustrated to pinpoint the physical characteristics.

When simulating the dynamic behaviour of a hydro power plant, it is essential to have a good representation of the turbine behaviour. The pressure transients in the system occurs because the flow changes, which the turbine defines. The flow through the turbine is a function of the pressure, the speed of rotation and the wicket gate opening and is, most often described in a performance diagram or Hill diagram. In the Hill diagram, the efficiency is drawn like contour lines, hence the name. A turbines Hill diagram is obtained by performance tests on scaled model in a laboratory. However, system dynamic simulations have to be performed in the early stage of a project, before the turbine manufacturer has been chosen and the Hill diagram is known. Therefore one have to rely on diagrams for a turbine with similar speed number. The Hill diagram is drawn through measured points, so for using the diagram in a simulation program, one have to iterate in the diagram based on curve fitting of the measured points. This paper describes an alternative method. By means of the Euler turbine equation, it is possible to set up two differential equations which represents the turbine performance with good enough accuracy for the dynamic simulations. The only input is the turbine's main geometry, the runner blade in- and outlet angle and the guide vane angle at best efficiency point of operation (BEP). In the paper, simulated turbine characteristics for a high head Francis turbine, and for a reversible pump turbine are compared with laboratory measured characteristics.
Even if an expert who has majored energy engineering, it is a difficult concept to understand power output optimization and power efficiency optimization. In this study a diagram applying thermodynamic state value as specific exergy and exergy ratio was developed. Although general peoples who did not major energy engineering can be easily understand the concept of power output optimization and power efficiency through the developed diagram. A represented property that can identify the performance of power plant is the main steam temperature and pressure. At the developed diagram the maximum power output line and maximum power efficiency line are shown according to the temperature and pressure of main steam. Therefore we can identify how much a power plant approach to maximum power output and maximum power efficiency.

Distribution Automation System(DAS) is designed to improve operational efficiency by acquisition and control of remote data using its components such as central computation units, communication network and feeder remote terminal units. A conventional human machine interface of the DAS adopts a schematic diagram which is made by drawing power equipments on the geographic information system map. The single line diagram is more useful than the schematic diagram for the main tasks of distribution system operation such as protective relay coordination, service restoration and loss minimization. Since the configuration of the distribution line is changed according to the relocation of the open tie switches, the auto-drawing algorithm based on the connection between the sections and the switches is an essential technique. This paper proposes a new auto-drawing algorithm for a single line diagram of distribution systems based on tertiary tree and collision avoidance method. The feasibility of the proposed algorithm has been testified for various cases using practical distribution system with 12 feeders.
Existing meso-scale models of concrete need to refine the mesh grids of aggregate and cement mortar, which may greatly reduce the computational efficiency. To overcome this problem, a novel meso-scale modeling strategy, which is based on rigid body spring method and Voronoi diagram, is proposed in this study to establish the meso-scale model of concrete. Firstly, establish numerical aggregate models according to user-defined programs. Circle aggregates are adopted due to their high efficiency in generation and packing process, and the grading of aggregate are determined according to the distribution curve proposed by Full and Thompson; Secondly, extract the centroids of aggregates, and then develop the Voronoi diagram in which aggregate centroids are defined as initial scatters; Finally, establish the rigid body spring model for concrete based on the Voronoi diagram. Aggregates are represented by rigid blocks, and assumed to be unbreakable. Cement mortar is concentrated into the interface between adjacent blocks and represented by two uniform springs. The number of grids is consistent with that of aggregates in specimens, and no mesh-refinement of aggregates and cement mortar is required. The accuracy and efficiency of the proposed modeling strategy are firstly identified by comparing the numerical results with the experimental ones, and then the applicability of the proposed strategy with different volume percentage occupied by aggregates is investigated.

In this study, two reliability computational algorithms which respectively utilize a factoring method are proposed for a system represented by reliability block diagram. First, vertex factoring algorithm is proposed. In this algorithm, a reliability block diagram is considered as a network graph with vertex reliabilities. Second algorithm is mainly concerned with conversion of a reliabilities block diagram into a network graph with edge reliabilities. In this algorithm, the independence of edges is preserved by eliminating replicated edges, and in computing the reliability of a converted network graph, existing edge factoring algorithm is applied. The efficiency of two algorithms are compared for example systems with respect to computing times. The results shows that the second algorithm is shown to be more efficient than the first algorithm.
Researches using DEM are actively progressed in field of water resource, and especially the extraction of watershed and stream based on topographic and hydrologic analysis, is widely used in GIS analysis recently. However, because it is extracted that watershed which is type of sliver polygon and stream which is type of straight line in low topographic region, they're not efficient for application. This study determined buffer zone from stream and tried smooth elevation change to buffer zone in order to efficiently extract abnormal watershed and stream being occurred in low topographic region. Especially, we applied equal-distance assignment model using Voronoi Diagram to determine smooth elevation change. Also, we extracted watershed and stream using stream recognition DEM and origional DEM, and evaluated the efficiency of research through comparing the shape of watershed and stream in low topographic region.

To understand the structure of molecules, various computational methodologies have been extensively investigated such as the Voronoi diagram of the centers of atoms in molecule and the power diagram for the weighted points where the weights are related to the radii of the atoms. For a more improved efficiency, constructs like an $\alpha$-shape or a weighted $\alpha$-shape have been developed and used frequently in a systematic analysis of the morphology of molecules. However, it has been recently shown that $\alpha$-shapes and weighted $\alpha$-shapes lack the fidelity to Euclidean distance for molecules with polysized spherical atoms. We present the theory as well as algorithms of $\beta$-shape and $\beta$-complex in $\mathbb{R}^3$ which reflects the size difference among atoms in their full Euclidean metric. We show that these new concepts are more natural for most applications and therefore will have a significant impact on applications based on particles, in particular in molecular biology. The theory will be equivalently useful for other application areas such as computer graphics, geometric modeling, chemistry, physics, and material science.
The continuous compaction response of zirconia powders prepared by different processing treatments was investigated. Though the yield point could be or not below 1 MPa, the change of slope was always observed at high pressure range around 60 MPa. Powder compaction was mainly governed by second compaction stage and compaction rate was decreased with increasing forming pressure. Rotary vacuum dried powder favored a high compaction density, whereas freeze dried and calcined powders favored an increase in the pressing efficiency. In order to extract more reliable information about powder compaction, it was necessary to use not only compaction response diagram but also compaction rate diagram.
