  • The objective of this study was to look into the effect of using Zentangle art therapy on improving the attention span of people with developmental disabilities in Lifelong Education Center. The 29 people with developmental disabilities in Lifelong Education Center of D-University in K-city were the subjects to reach the primary goal of this study. Nine of the subjects were assigned to the experimental group of the Zentangle art therapy, ten to the control group. As for the study tools, 3.5x3.5 inch paper card, various colors of Deco Markers, and Zentangle cards for the experimental group. The FAIR and MindWaveMobile (MWM) were used to measure the effectiveness. The twelve 30-minute sessions of the program, held from October to December in 2018, has shown the result that the attention span improved on the experimental group using the Zentangle art therapy.

  • The present study was designed to evaluate the effects of staff training in PBS on the behaviors of staff and children with developmental disabilities in an inpatient unit. The perceived significance of children's problem behavior and staff's caring stress significantly decreased with the intervention. A satisfaction survey reported staff's high satisfaction with the process and results of staff training. This study suggests that PBS is a socially valid and positive intervention with problem behavior of children with developmental disabilities. The implications and limitations of this study, with directions for future research, are also discussed.

  • This study is a qualitative study conducted to analyze the functions and needs of social robots for parents of children with developmental disabilities in order to utilize care robots for treatment of children with developmental disabilities. The subjects of the study were 11 primary caregivers with children under the age of 18 whose children were diagnosed with developmental disabilities or who had been receiving special education for more than one year. The interview questionnaire was composed of a semi-structured questionnaire and consisted of awareness, necessity, expectation, concern, and other opinions about social robots. The interview was conducted as a non-face-to-face online video interview due to COVID 19. As a result of the study, 4 themes and 7 sub-topics were derived. The four topics were derived from the unfamiliar but soon-to-be-faced reality, social robots with active functions, opinions on the appearance and materials of social robots, and concerns about social robots. Through this study, it was possible to identify the expectations and suggestions of the main caregivers for social robots, which could not be identified in quantitative studies, and if these can be reflected in social robots to be developed in the future, it is expected that positive results with higher acceptance will be derived.

  • "Epigenetics" means the study of heritable changes in gene-activity without changes in DNA sequences. Methylation of the cytosine residue in a CpG dinucleotide sequence is a characteristic of the vertebrate genome. In vertebrates, methylation of DNA mainly occurs at the 5′-position of cytosine in a CpG dinucleotide forming 5-methylcytosine. Methylation of DNA plays a profound role in transcriptional repression of gene expression through several mechanisms. Generally, DNA of inactive genes is more heavily methylated than that of active ones; conversely demethylation of DNA reactivates gene expression in vivo and in vitro.

  • Recently we have demonstrated that a 12-day s.c. dose of 2-Bromopropane(2-BP) to pregnant mice during pregnancy resulted in significant developmental toxicity at dose levels of above 1250 mg/kg/day. However, the cause and effect relationship between maternal and developmental toxicities could not be elucidated in the previous study.(omitted)

  • Osteoclasts are multinucleated cells with the unique ability to resorb bone. Elevated activity of these cells under pathologic conditions leads to the progression of bone erosion that occurs in osteoporosis, periodontal disease, and rheumatoid arthritis. Thus, the regulation of osteoclast apoptosis is important for bone homeostasis. In this study, we examined the effects of the Janus tyrosine kinase 2 specific inhibitor AG490 on osteoclast apoptosis. We found that AG490 greatly inhibited osteoclast apoptosis. AG490 stimulated the phosphorylation of Akt and ERK. Adenovirus-mediated expression of dominant negative (DN)-Akt and DN-Ras in osteoclasts inhibited the survival of osteoclasts despite the presence of AG490. Cytochrome c release during osteoclast apoptosis was inhibited by AG490 treatment, but this effect was inhibited in the presence of LY294002 or U0126. AG490 suppressed the pro-apoptotic proteins Bad and Bim, which was inhibited in osteoclasts infected with DN-Akt and DN-Ras adenovirus. In addition, constitutively active MEK and myristoylated-Akt adenovirus suppressed the cleavage of pro-caspase-9 and -3 and inhibited osteoclast apoptosis induced by etoposide. Taken together, our results suggest that AG490 inhibited cytochrome c release into the cytosol at least partly by inhibiting the pro-apoptotic proteins Bad and Bim, which in turn suppressed caspase-9 and -3 activation, thereby inhibiting osteoclast apoptosis.

  • Purpose: Potocki-Lupski syndrome (PTLS), is a recently identified, rare genomic disorder. The patients are affected by infantile hypotonia, poor growth and developmental delay. Facial dysmorphism may not be obvious in some patients. PTLS is associated with microduplication at chromosome 17p11.2. In the current study, three Korean patients are reported with their clinical and genetic features. Materials and Methods: The clinical findings of each patient were reviewed. Karyotyping and multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA) analyses were done for genetic diagnoses. Results: All the patients did not have the characteristic dysmorphic features, such as broad forehead, triangular face, asymmetric smile and palpebral fissures. On the other hand, all three patients were affected by variable degree of developmental delay, poor oral intake, failure to thrive, and language development disorders. Chromosome 17p11.2 duplication was identified by conventional karyotyping analysis only in one patient, whereas the other confirmed by MLPA analyses. Conclusion: Delayed development was mostly commonly observed in our patients without distinct dysmorphic facial features. In this respect, genomic screening in patients with developmental delay would identify more cases with PTLS to understand their long-term clinical courses with the development of adequate psychological and rehabilitation education program.
