MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS OF AN "SIR" EPIDEMIC MODEL IN A CONTINUOUS REACTOR - DETERMINISTIC AND PROBABILISTIC APPROACHES

  • In this paper, a mathematical dynamical system involving both deterministic (with or without delay) and stochastic "SIR" epidemic model with nonlinear incidence rate in a continuous reactor is considered. A profound qualitative analysis is given. It is proved that, for both deterministic models, if ��d > 1, then the endemic equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable. However, if ��d ≤ 1, then the disease-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable. Concerning the stochastic model, the Feller's test combined with the canonical probability method were used in order to conclude on the long-time dynamics of the stochastic model. The results improve and extend the results obtained for the deterministic model in its both forms. It is proved that if ��s > 1, the disease is stochastically permanent with full probability. However, if ��s ≤ 1, then the disease dies out with full probability. Finally, some numerical tests are done in order to validate the obtained results.

  • A robust deterministic control for a class of singularly perturbed uncertain systems, where uncertainties are characterized deterministically rather than stochastically, is developed based mainly on information available on an uncertain reduced-order system. The deterministic control scheme is applied to the motion control of a n degree of freedom robotic manipulator. The parasitic actuator and sensor dynamics of the manipulator are explicitly considered in the stability analysis of the deterministic controller using a singular perturbation model. Simulation and experimental studies for a two degree of freedom, direct drive SCARA manipulator are conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the derived control scheme.

Random vibration and deterministic analyses of cable-stayed bridges to asynchronous ground motion

  • In this paper, a comparison of various random vibration and deterministic dynamic analyses of cable-stayed bridges subjected to asynchronous ground motion is presented. Different random vibration methods are included to determine the dynamic behaviour of a cable-stayed bridge for various ground motion wave velocities. As a numerical example the Jindo Bridge located in South Korea is chosen and a 413 DOF mathematical model is employed for this bridge. The results obtained from a spectral analysis approach are compared with those of two random vibration based response spectrum methods and a deterministic method. The analyses suggest that the structural responses usually show important amplifications depending on the decreasing ground motion wave velocities.

복합재 미익 구조의 신뢰성 기반 확률론적 구조해석 (The Reliability-Based Probabilistic Structural Analysis for the Composite Tail Plane Structures)

  • In this paper, the deterministic optimal design for the tail plane made of composite materials is conducted under the deterministic loading condition and compared with that of the metallic materials. Next, the reliability analysis with five random variables such as loading and material properties of unidirectional prepreg is conducted to examine the probability of failure for the deterministic optimal design results. The MATLAB programing is used for reliability analysis combined with FEA S/W(COMSOL) for structural analysis. The laminated composite is assumed to the equivalent orthotropic material using classical laminated plate theory. The response surface methodology and importance sampling technique are adopted to reduce computational cost with satisfying the accuracy in reliability analysis. As a result, structural weight of composite materials is lighter than that of metals in deterministic optimal design. However, the probability of failure for the deterministic optimal design of the tail plane structures is too high to be neglected. The sensitivity of each variable is also estimated using probabilistic sensitivity analysis to figure out which variables are sensitive to failure. The computational cost is considerably reduced when response surface methodology and importance sampling technique are used. The study of the computationally inexpensive method for reliability-based design optimization will be necessary in further work.

  • Recent earthquakes, measuring over a magnitude of 5.0, on the eastern coast of Korea, have aroused interest in earthquake analyses and the seismic design of caisson-type breakwaters. Most earthquake analysis methods, such as equivalent static analysis, response spectrum analysis, nonlinear analysis, and capacity analysis, are deterministic and have been used for seismic design and performance evaluation of coastal structures. However, deterministic methods are difficult for reflecting on one of the most important characteristics of earthquakes, i.e. the uncertainty of earthquakes. This paper presents results of probabilistic seismic hazard assessment(PSHA) of an actual caisson-type breakwater, considering uncertainties of earthquake occurrences and soil properties. First, the seismic vulnerability of a structure and the seismic hazard of the site are evaluated, using earthquake sets and a seismic hazard map; then, the seismic risk of the structure is assessed.

  • Accurately assessing and managing risks in any endeavor is crucial. Risk assessment in engineering translates the abstract concept of risk into actionable strategies for systematic risk management. However, risk validation is met with significant skepticism, particularly concerning the uncertainty of probability. This study aims to address the aforementioned uncertainty in a multitude of ways. Firstly, instead of relying on deterministic probability, it acknowledges uncertainty and presents a probabilistic interval. Secondly, considering the uncertainty interval highlighted in OREDA, it delineates the bounds of the probabilistic interval. Lastly, it investigates how much explanatory power deterministic probability has within the defined probabilistic interval. By utilizing fault tree analysis (FTA) and integrating confidence intervals, a probabilistic risk assessment was conducted to scrutinize the explanatory power of deterministic probability. In this context, explanatory power signifies the proportion of probability within the probabilistic risk assessment interval that lies below the deterministic probability. Research results reveal that at a 90% confidence interval, the explanatory power of deterministic probability decreases to 73%. Additionally, it was confirmed that explanatory power reached 100% only with a probability application 36.9 times higher.

Medoid Determination in Deterministic Annealing-based Pairwise Clustering

  • The deterministic annealing-based clustering algorithm is an EM-based algorithm which behaves like simulated annealing method, yet less sensitive to the initialization of parameters. Pairwise clustering is a kind of clustering technique to perform clustering with inter-entity distance information but not enforcing to have detailed attribute information. The pairwise deterministic annealing-based clustering algorithm repeatedly alternates the steps of estimation of mean-fields and the update of membership degrees of data objects to clusters until termination condition holds. Lacking of attribute value information, pairwise clustering algorithms do not explicitly determine the centroids or medoids of clusters in the course of clustering process or at the end of the process. This paper proposes a method to identify the medoids as the centers of formed clusters for the pairwise deterministic annealing-based clustering algorithm. Experimental results show that the proposed method locate meaningful medoids.

터널굴착시 지하수위저하에 의한 지표침하의 신뢰성 해석 (Reliability analysis of surface settlement by groundwater drawdown from tunnel excavation)

  • In this paper, reliability analysis of surface settlement by ground water drawdown is performed using a reliability-groundwater flow numerical model. The result is compared with that of the deterministic model to evaluate the influence of the uncertainty from hydraulic conductivity in the soft ground as well as to determine the range of hydraulic conductivity of grouted ground. From the analyses, it was found that probability of failure to exceed the tolerable settlement was very high, if the hydraulic conductivity of grouted ground is decided from the deterministic flow model only. Reliability analysis which evaluates variance of hydraulic conductivity should be used together with the deterministic model for grouting design of tunnels to prevent ground water drawdown.

  • 터널에서 암반구조의 복잡성으로 인해 사전에 예측 할 수 없었던 암반의 붕락이 발생하여, 붕락대책에 막대한 비용과 시간을 낭비하는 사례가 많다. 암반 불연속면의 복잡성을 사전 조사 단계에서 충분히 파악하거나 대책을 수립하는 것은 어렵다. 최근 터널의 정보화 설계시공이 중요시 되어지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 터널의 굴착 전에 관찰된 정보를 최대한 활용하여 불안정한 암반블럭을 사전에 예측하기 위하여 신 하이브리드 추계학적-확정론적 암반블럭 해석기법을 제안하고, 현지에서 관찰한 불연속면 정보를 근거로 하여 터널현장에 적용했다. 터널현장에서의 해석결과를 비교 검토하여, 터널의 신 하이브리드 추계학적-확정론적 암반블럭 해석기법의 타당성과 적용성에 대한 검증을 하였다.

Treatment of Stainless Steel Cladding in Pressurized Thermal Shock Evaluation: Deterministic Analyses

  • Fracture mechanics is one of the major areas of the pressurized thermal shock (PTS) evaluation. To evaluate the reactor pressure vessel integrity associated with PTS, PFM methodology demands precise calculation of temperature, stress, and stress intensity factor for the variety of PTS transients. However, the existence of stainless steel cladding, with different thermal, physical, and mechanical property, at the inner surface of reactor pressure vessel complicates the fracture mechanics analysis. In this paper, treatment schemes to evaluate stress and resulting stress intensity factor for RPV with stainless steel clad are introduced. For a reference transient, the effects of clad thermal conductivity and thermal expansion coefficients on deterministic fracture mechanics analysis are examined.
