  • The fire resistance of a statistically indeterminate beam made of fire resistant steel was analyzed using the mechanical and thermal databases and compared with that of an indeterminate beam constructed of ordinary structural steel to not only determine the fire resistance performance of a statistically indeterminate beam itself, but also to determine if it is stable to test the fire resistance performance with a determinate beam built with ordinary structural steel instead of an indeterminate beam made from fire resistant steels. The results showed that the fire resistance of an indeterminate beam consisting of fire resistant steels is better than that of a determinate beam made of SS 400 and if the length of the beam built with FR 490 is longer, the displacement of the beam is higher. In addition, the fire test with a determinate beam made of SS 400 is was more conservative than that of an indeterminate beam made of FR 490 in the range of the same length. Therefore, another measure should be considered if beams built with FR 490 are longer than thos of SS 400.

  • Using moving support finite elements, seismic analysis of statically-determinate beams subjected to support motions is performed to show its accuracy and its ease of use. Examples of cantilever and simply-supported beam subjected to support motions are illustrated and the numerical results are compared with the analytical solutions. The examples show the elements facilitate modeling beams with the conventional 2-noded, Hermitian, Euler-Bernoulli beam element. The comparisons of the results with analytical solutions show good agreements with high accuracy.

  • The paper focuse on the effect of a crack subjects to collaspe behabiors of statically indeterminate beams under concentrated load. Through the experiment and calculation, it was revealed that the collaspe load of statically indeterminate beams is much higher than that of statically determinate beams. The cumulative AE event counts of statically determinate beams was less than that of statically indeterminate beams, and the center notch beams sas revealed less than that of the side notch beams.

  • A finite element formulation for a Rayleigh-damped Bernoulli-Euler beam subjected to support motions, which accompanies quasi-static rigid-body motion, is presented by using the quasi-static decomposition method. Moving support beam elements, one of whose nodes is coincident with the moving support, are developed to represent the effect of a moving support. Statically determinate beams subjected to support motions can be modeled successfully by using moving support elements. Examples of cantilever and simply-supported beams subjected to support motions are illustrated, and the numerical results are compared with the analytical solutions. The comparison shows good agreement.

  • The minimum oil film thicknesses (MOFT) in the crankshaft main bearings of a 1.5 liter, L-4, gasoline engine are measured and calculated to study the dynamically loaded engine bearing. The MOFT are measured simultaneously at each of the five main bearings using the total capacitance method(TCM). To improve the reliability of the TCM, a reasonable determination method of bearing clearance is introduced and the effects of bearipg cavitation and aeration on the test results are analyzed. Also the crankshaft is grounded by means of a slip ring instead of the friction contact method to improve the test precision. The calculation is based on the model of statically determinate beam, short bearing approximation and Mobility method. From the comparison between the measured and calculated MOFT curves, it is found that a qualitative similarity exists between them, but in all cases, measured MOFT are smaller than that of calculated. The crankshaft vibration and the imbalance of the load distribution between the engine bearings have important influence upon the MOFT curve. So it is found that the calculation result from the model of the statically determinate beam has a limitation in predicting bearing performance.

  • It is important to determinate the shear center of beam having arbitrary cross-section in structures. In this study, we have introduced the determination of shear center that gets the equivalent stiffness matrix representing arbitrary cross section of beam and applies energy equivalence theory. This method shows the results of applying on examples that we know the exact and approximate solution of open and cross section of beam. This study also compares with the shear center of composite rotor blade got by the experiment and by the suggested method.

  • The large mass method for dynamic analysis of statically determinate beams subjected to in-phase support motions is justified by showing that the equation of motion of the beams under consideration is equivalent to that of large mass model of the beam when an appropriate large mass ratio is employed. The accuracy of the stress responses based on the beam large mass method is investigated through careful numerical tests. The numerical results are compared to analytic solutions and the comparison shows that the large mass method yields not only the time history of motion but also the distributions of bending moment and shear force accurately.

  • Recently, structural materials have been developed to have high performance, and SM 520 has been developed and used for high-rise buildings. However, fires frequently occur in buildings, and the number of victims and amount of damage increase year by year. However, the evaluation of fire resistance performance for structural beams made of SM 520 is done with specimens made of ordinary structural steels with boundary conditions of a fixed beam, and the results are allowed for use in steel-framed buildings. This study analyzed the fire resistance performance of statistically indeterminate beams built with SM 520. The analysis used a fire engineering technique that includes mechanical and thermal data of SM 520 and heat transfer theory, and heat stress analysis was also conducted. The results from the analysis were compared with those from a statistically determinate beam made of ordinary structural steels.

  • In this paper a robust 2-noded connection element has been developed for modelling the bolted end-plate connection between steel beam and column at elevated temperatures. The numerical procedure described is based on the model proposed by Huang (2011), incorporating additional developments to more precisely determinate the tension, compression and bending moment capacities of end-plate connection in fire. The proper failure criteria are proposed to calculate the tension capacity for each individual bolt row. In this new model the connection failure due to bending, axial tension, compression and shear are considered. The influence of the axial force of the connected beam on the connection is also taken into account. This new model has the advantages of both the simple and component-based models. In order to validate the model a total of 22 tests are used. It is evident that this new connection model has ability to accurately predict the behaviour of the end-plate connection at elevated temperatures, and can be used to represent the end-plate connections in supporting performance-based fire resistance design of steel-framed composite buildings.

  • Accurate estimation of shear flows in thin-walled beam section is the key issue to evaluate shear stress distribution of ship hull transverse section under the shear forces acting on hull girder. It is regarded that the method using the warping functions obtained by finite element formulation is the state of the art of this field. Recently, however, IACS took effect the new version of CSR in which direct calculation process of shear flow was suggested. In the direct calculation process, shear flow of ship hull section can be obtained by the addition of determinate and indeterminate shear flows calculated respectively. So, in this paper, the shear flow evaluation codes based on the process proposed by IACS CSR and warping function based method were developed respectively. The calculated results of shear flows for the several examples of ship sections were compared with each other and considered in detail.
