  • The present article describes a novel method of preparing the sulfonated polysulfone-based PEMs for DMFC, which are excellent in film quality, proton conductivity, methanol impermeability and mechanical properties. No depression in film quality or difficulty in film preparation is observed, even though sulfonated group of the PEMs are kept as high as 70 mol %. Allyl-terminated cooligo-PESs containing the organic sulfonate groups were solvent-cast into films and then thermally treated for cross-linking. Cross-linked sulfonated polysulfone-based PEMs gave unprecedented reduction of methanol cross-over and high ionic conductivity through in-situ thermal polymerization and cross-linking of telechelic sulfonated sulfone oligomers during a membrane preparation.

  • Extracts of Black cohosh (Cimicifugae rhizoma) have been used for the treatment of climacteric complaints for decades. A significant number of woman entering menopause exhibit the following symptoms: getting hot flushes, night sweats, irritability, depression, and anxiety, A reduction of the frequency of hot flushes equivalents and hints on the antidepressant activity of Cimcifuga extracts. In the present work, we have screened several 80% ethanol extracts from medicinal plants and found that the extracts from Cimicifugae Rhizoma(Black cohosh:승마) have inhibitory effect on catecholamine secretion in bovine chromaffin cell. Since this extract inhibited 1,1-dimethyl-4-phenylpiperazinium iodide (DMPP)-induced catecholamine secretion, but did not inhibit KCl, bradykinin, and veratridine-evoked case, this inhibitory effect is mediated by nicotinic acetylcholine receptors with noncompetitive manner.

  • The paper will present chip formation mechanism and surface integrity generation mechanism based on the systematical experimental tests. Some basic factors such as the end milling cutter tooth number, cutting forces, cutting temperature, cutting vibration, the chip status, the surface roughness, the hardness distribution and the metallographic texture of the machined surface layer are involved. the chip formation mechanism is typical thermal plastic shear localization at high cutting speed with less number og shear ribbons and bigger shear angle than at low speed, which means lack of chip deformation. The high cutting speed with much more cutting teeth will be beneficial to the reduction of cutting forces, enlarge machining stability region, depression of temperature increment, auti-fatigability as well as surface roughness. The burrs always exists both at low cutting speed and at high cutting speed. So the deburr process should be arranged for milling titanium alloy in any case.

  • A 2-year-old, intact female, mixed breed dog with depression, anorexia, poor mothering, and uterine prolapse was referred to the Haemaru Referral Animal Hospital. The prolapse(Y-shaped uterus) was detected on the fifth day of normal parturition(eight live pups). Depending on physical examination, bilateral uterine horns and uterine body were prolapsed into the vagina. The ovariohysterectomy was performed after the uterus with manual reduction through the vulva. In this case, uterine prolaspe was occurred in a primiparous bitch has been through normal parturition.

  • It is known that alcoholics have significantly lower mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH)s'activity than do normal subjects or nonalcoholics with liver disease. However, there are only few reports that explain the reasons behind this reduction of ALDHs'activities. In this study, ALDH activity is inhibited by acetaldehyde, a substrate for ALDH However, the addition of glutathione (GSH) protected ALDH activities against the inhibitory effects of acetaldehyde in vitro. Furthermore, when GSH depletion is induced using diethyl maleate (DEM) in rats by 24% in cytosol and 43% in mitochondria, ALDH activities were also depressed by 31% and 63%, respectively compared to non-treated rats without significant reductions in other hepatic enzymes. These results suggest that ALDHs'activities are closely related to the concentration of acetaldehyde and/or cellular GSH contents . Therefore in alcoholic liver disease, increased productions of acetaldehyde and decreased contents of mitochondrial GSH may involved in the depression of ALDHs'activities.

  • We report two cases of cleidocranial dysplasia, which was managed without significant craniofacial osteotomy. A mother and daughter, both of normal intelligence, presented with central forehead depression, mid-face hypoplasia, and blepharoptosis. The fact that they have an identically deformed face implied a genetic basis. In both patients, radiologic evaluation revealed the underdeveloped maxilla, persistent fontanelle opening, and cleidal aplasia. Clinical findings and radiologic studies were consistent with the diagnosis of cleidocranial dysplasia. Both patients underwent forehead plasty via bicoronal approach, augmentation rhinoplasty using tip plasty, and epicanthoplasty. In addition, the mother underwent malar augmentation using Medpor implantation and reduction genioplasty. The patients did not experience any postoperative complication and remained satisfied with the operation at 6-year follow-up.

  • The influence of hot pressing on the pore structures of Nafion membranes was investigated by observing the Nafion before and after hot pressing with $^1H$ nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The freezing point depression and chemical shift data of water in the Nafion indicated the presence of two different pore size ranges in Nafion. Hot pressing mainly reduced the sizes and number of the big pores. The reduction of water uptake and proton conductivity after hot pressing was explained by this variation of pore size and number. We demonstrated the potential application of chemical shift data and NMR cryoporometry experiments to measure the relative pore sizes, on a nano scale, and numbers.

  • The volumetric efficiency is significantly affected by the behavior of pressure wave in induction system and exhaust pipe. By the motion of the piston, there exist pressure fluctuation in induction system which produce waves. Waves are propagated along a pipe bi-directional as they propagated through it, making compression wave and rare-faction(expansion) wave. These wave phenomena can affect to the volumetric efficiency. As a method of improvement of the volumetric efficiency, fuel economy and pollutant emission reduction particularly in low engine speeds, a side-branch additional tunable helmholtz resonator on the secondary pipe of intake system is proposed by use of their acoustic vibrations. Some of results are presented which deal with their physical phenomena for the wave action of intake system in a four-stroke three cylinders diesel engine.

  • Along with the recent trend of improved survival in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC), health-related quality of life (HRQoL) has become a significant outcome measure and its improvement is an important goal. The most widely adopted CRC specific HRQoL questionnaires are the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Qualityof-Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-CR38) and the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy (FACT-C). CRC survivors without serious comorbidity or recurrence experience only minor deficits of overall HRQoL when compared to the general population. However, disease recurrence, progression, and more specific limitations, including weight loss, reduction in energy, and psychosocial problems like psychological distress and depression, could result in lower HRQoL. To improve HRQoL, further research is required to develop appropriate health education regarding lifestyle changes and personalized intervention strategies for CRC survivors.

  • Previous studies have shown disrupted synaptic plasticity and neural activity in depression. Such alteration is strongly associated with disrupted synaptic structures. Chronic stress has been known to induce changes in dendritic structure in the basolateral amygdala (BLA) and medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), but antidepressant effect on structure of these brain areas has been unclear. Here, the effects of imipramine on dendritic spine density and morphology in BLA and mPFC subregions of stressed mice were examined. Chronic restraint stress caused depressive-like behaviors such as enhanced social avoidance and despair level coincident with differential changes in dendritic spine structure. Chronic stress enhanced dendritic spine density in the lateral nucleus of BLA with no significant change in the basal nucleus of BLA, and altered the proportion of stubby or mushroom spines in both subregions. Conversely, in the apical and basal mPFC, chronic stress caused a significant reduction in spine density. The proportion of stubby or mushroom spines in these subregions overall reduced while the proportion of thin spines increased after repeated stress. Interestingly, most of these structural alterations by chronic stress were reversed by imipramine. In addition, structural changes caused by stress and blocking the changes by imipramine were corelated well with altered activation and expression of synaptic plasticity-promoting molecules such as phospho-CREB, phospho-CAMKII, and PSD-95. Collectively, our data suggest that imipramine modulates stress-induced changes in synaptic structure and synaptic plasticity-promoting molecules in a coordinated manner although structural and molecular alterations induced by stress are distinct in the BLA and mPFC.
