We attempted to develop a problem-based learning (PBL) module for integrated education in dental hygiene with the aim of helping students gain clinical competencies necessary for dental hygienist work. To develop the PBL Module for Clinical Dentistry in Dental Hygiene course, the researchers identified literature related to not only educational technology, but also medical science, nursing, dentistry, and dental hygiene. During the design phase of the PBL module, problem scenarios and a plan for the teaching and learning process were developed. Developing problem scenarios involved describing a problematic situation and three questions related with that situation. To cultivate competencies required in dental clinics, each question was related to the diagnosis of a dental disease, dental treatment, and dental hygiene procedures for care. Teaching-learning process plan included the designs of operating environment, operational strategies, learning resources, facilitation of problem-solving process, and evaluation. It is necessary to evaluate the PBL module for integrated education in dental hygiene to confirm its effectiveness.

Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is a naturally occurring antioxidant and has been previously used to treat diabetes and cardiovascular disease. However, the autophagy effects of ALA against oxidative stress-induced dopaminergic neuronal cell injury remain unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of ALA in autophagy and apoptosis against oxidative stress in the SH-SY5Y human dopaminergic neuronal cell line. We examined SH-SY5Y phenotypes using the 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay (cell viability/proliferation), 4′,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole dihydrochloride nuclear staining, Live/Dead cell assay, cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) assay, immunoblotting, and immunocytochemistry. Our data showed ALA attenuated hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced ROS generation and cell death. ALA effectively suppressed Bax up-regulation and Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL down-regulation. Furthermore, ALA increased the expression of the antioxidant enzyme, heme oxygenase-1. Moreover, the expression of Beclin-1 and LC-3 autophagy biomarkers was decreased by ALA in our cell model. Combined, these data suggest ALA protects human dopaminergic neuronal cells against H2O2-induced cell injury by inhibiting autophagy and apoptosis.
Purpose: This study aims to offer fundamental data to develop a career program that helps the dental technology students find a proper and desired job position and to be satisfied with their job. To this goal, we analysed the differences found between the personality type, major satisfaction, job satisfaction, and preference in job position among the dental technology students. Method: We conducted a survey using Myers-Briggs Type Indicator among the subjects who are sophomores and juniors of the dental technology department of a university in Gangwon province. Our analysis was grounded on 130 valid questionnaires. Results: The results are summarized as follows: In personality type ESTJ turned out the highest as 20.0%, while ENTP was the lowest as 0.8%. The preference was revealed as Extraversion (66.9%), Sensing (74.6%), Feeling (50.8%), Judging (61.5%) respectively. Of the general characteristics, only the religious or non-religious state was statistically meaningful as (p<. 05) in emotional type (F). No statistical significance was found in the major satisfaction. The job satisfaction was statistically meaningful as p<. 05 in Judgemental type (J). GPA was statistically significant as p<. 05 in the sensory type of the personality type. Desired job position was statistically meaningful as p<. 05 in emotional and cognitive types. Conclusion: We found a meaningful difference in the job satisfaction and the desired job position with respect to the personality type of dental technology students. However clear explanation of the correlations among these factors requires a more comprehensive survey and various approaches from the personality and psychology tests, which is to follow.
This study is to analyze the personality trait and dental fear of high school students. This study is conducted with a total of 603 first grader at high school in DaeGu city from 1st September to 30th October, 2009. In prevention and dental treatment knowledge category, the average score of female are higher than male. The concern of oral health, the experience of oral health education and the number of toothbrush are significantly different in the knowledge category. In dental fear category, the number of dental pain, the visiting is treatment, the recognize of dental state, the number of toothbrush and the change of dental visiting date are significantly different. In the prevention knowledge according to dental fear state, low fear group 7.03 is higher than high fear group. In the dental treatment knowledge according to dental fear state, high fear group 7.15 is higher than low fear group. In personal temperament, there are not significantly relationship between prevention knowledge, dental treatment knowledge and dental fear. These findings are basis to development of education programs which were included prevention and dental treatment knowledge before visiting dental clinics for reducing dental fear.
Purpose: This study aimed to assess and compare the marginal fit of ceramic-based hybrid resin restoration (HYB) and zirconia restoration (ZIR) for dental computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing systems. Methods: A stainless steel master model was produced. The impression was first made with silicone, and then stone working models were produced. A total of twenty restorations were fabricated with two different materials: ZIR and HYB. The silicone film thickness of the marginal gap was measured using a digital microscope; digital photos were taken at a magnification of ×160, and then analyzed using a measurement software. The values of the result were evaluated with the independent-sample t-test (α=0.05). All statistical analyses were performed with a statistical software. Results: The mean values for the marginal gap was 37.14±2.96 ㎛ for HYB, compared with 40.37±5.26 ㎛ for ZIR. No significant difference was found between ZIR and HYB (p=0.107). Conclusion: As a result, the marginal fit of the restoration fabricated using the hybrid resin was better than that of the restoration fabricated using zirconia. Also, the marginal fit of all groups was below the clinical acceptable range of 120 ㎛. Thus, HYB for dental CAD/CAM system in this study is expected to be suitable for clinical use in dentistry.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the awareness of dental technicians on demand for this occupation, their occupational satisfaction and factors affecting the supply and demand of dental technicians. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire survey was carried out by having convenience sampling as 200 dental technicians who work in Seoul Metropolis, Gyeonggi-do Province, Chungnam-do Province from September 26, 2016 to October 15. An analysis of the collected data was computationally processed by using SPSS Win 19.0 program. An analytical technique was made by using statistical techniques such as frequency & percentage, T-test, One-way ANOVA or ANCOVA analysis. The following are the analytical results of the collected materials. Results: When the occupational satisfaction of the selected subjects was analyzed, there were significant differences according to academic credential, marital status, duties in charge, position and monthly income. Their preference for this occupation as a lifelong job significantly varied with age, academic credential, duties in charge, position and monthly income. Their turnover plans significantly differed with age, position, career and monthly income(p<.05). As a result of analyzing what factors affected manpower supply and demand, they placed a lot of importance on the areas of required time and satisfaction, and they attached a less importance to the areas of interpersonal relationships and workload. Their total average score in these areas was 3.06. Conclusion: As a result of research, the manpower supply and demand factors that exerted significant influences on occupational satisfaction were pride. required time and the appropriateness of the number of workers, and the manpower supply and demand factors that had significant impacts on job preference as a lifelong occupation were satisfaction, pride and the appropriateness of the number of workers. Gypsum products are used for the preparation of stone casts of oral and maxillofacial structures and as important adjuncts to dental laboratory operations involved in the production of dental prosthesis. Accuracy and dimensional stability over time are properties of concern in fixed prothodontics. Gypsum products used in denstry are a form calcium sulfate hemihydrate and are classified as 1 of 5 types according to International Standard Organization(ISO) 6873. All die materials exhibit some dimensional change during setting, but expansion and contraction during setting and dimensional changes in response to varations in temperature and the water-powder ratio must be minimal. Although numerous investigators have studied the properties of die materials, several products have been introduced recently with manufacturer claims of superior dimensional stalility. The aim of this study was to determine the surface properties using various separating materials of dental gypsum products The results were as follows 1. In the comparison of first and second plaster distances before separation in different separating agent, there was no significant difference except using Trio separating agent. The interface using Trio separating agent forms like to pores. 2. In the comparison of first and second plaster distances after separation in different separating agent, there was significant difference. The interface of plasters using WD-40, Trio and Vaseline was showed some gaps. Each they were measured at average 7.97 $\pm$ 2.07 ${\mu}m$, 63.09 $\pm$ 23.25 ${\mu}m$, 27.59 $\pm$ 4.19 ${\mu}m$. 3. In the comparison of the surface, the surface of control sample(using none seperating agent) showed irregular properties and the surface using Trio and Vaseline become wrinkled. Specially the surface using Vaseline was showed shiny properties. But the surface using MAGIC SEP, Plaster seperating agent, WD-40 showed regular properties.
Purpose: This study set out to propose plans for more efficient and effective clinical practice by investigating the current state of clinical practice in the field of dental technology and thus provide basic data to develop pre- and post-education programs for clinical practice. Methods: The subjects include dental technicians at dental technical laboratories that were appointed as the place of clinical practice by the Department of Dental Technology of G University. The survey period spanned from December 22, 2014 to January 20, 2015. Total 250 questionnaires were distributed to them, and 190(76.0%) were returned. After excluding 23 whose answers were uncertain or seemed to lack reliability, total 167(66.8%) were used in final analysis. Results: 1. The most frequent practice the student did during clinical practice was articulator attachment, which was followed by pin operation or model making, one's own task and practice, sand and crow sculpturing, burying, casting, and grinding. 2. In case of going through the entire process, porcelain had the most students at 39(23.4%), being followed by crown & bridge at 28(16.8%), clinical model at 23(13.8%), full denture at 17(10.2%), and partial denture at 17(10.2%) in the order. 3. Of the students, 59.8%(30.5% for reinforced basic practice; 29.3% for intensive practice education) said that intensive practice education should be reinforced in school; and 22.3% said that intensive theory and practice education was needed, which indicates that 82.6% voiced their opinion of reinforcing education around practice. 4. The students felt that they lacked diligence, passion, and theoretical knowledge somewhat and were relatively good at clinical adaptation and operational skills. Conclusion: The findings show that the students felt an absolute lack of practice education as the school education was focused on theory and national exams in the field of dental technology, thus raising a need to reinforce practice education. Of all the respondents, 62.9% said there was a need to improve the current education with a focus on jobs. In future, education of dental technology should work to bring up able dental technicians that can perform in clinical dental technology right after graduation by reinforcing job-based practice education.
Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the awareness and activation towards dental medical tourism. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 195 dental hygienists in Seoul from January 30 to September 15, 2014. Data were analyzed by one way ANOVA, chi square and t test using SPSS 19.0 program. the questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects, awareness towards medical tourism, medical tourism related hospitals, activation of Korean medical tourism, fields of medical tourism, and improvement of medical tourism. The questionnaire was adapted and modified from Kim and Kim by Likert scale. Results: Dental hygienists gave the high perception and possibility towards medical tourism (94.1%). Those carrying out medical tourism accounted for 39.5 percent. The most difficult problem was communication with foreigners (80.5%). The performance of prosthesis and anesthesia was the most specialized area that supported the medical tourism (84.1%). In order to improve the medical tourism implementation, dental medical technology must be strengthened (39.8%). Conclusion: The desirable dental medical tourism must be carried out by proficient dental medical manpower, higher technology, active participation and financial support by the government. This dental medical tourism will provide job opening for the dental hygienists.
Background: This study aimed to investigate the effects of department satisfaction and career maturity on the perceived health status, relationship, and self-efficacy of dental hygiene college students based on Alderfer's existence-relationship-growth theory. Methods: We obtained convenience samples of dental hygiene students in Daejeon and Chungnam areas; 241 questionnaires were collected from 250 persons considering the dropout rate and used for the final analysis except for 9 careless responses. The differences in perceived health status, relationship, self-efficacy, department satisfaction, and career maturity according to general characteristics were analyzed using a t-test, one-way analysis of variance and Pearson's correlation coefficients. Moreover, structural equation modeling was performed to confirm the variables. GFI, AGFI,CFI, RMR, RMSEA, TLI, and NFI indices were calculated to verify the fitness of the path model. Results: There were significant differences in self-efficacy, department satisfaction, career maturity according to grade, and significant differences in academic performance for all variables except relationship. The school system also had a significant effect on department satisfaction. Perceived health status, relationship, self-efficacy, department satisfaction, and career maturity demonstrated statistically significant positive correlations (p<0.05). The factors affecting department satisfaction were relationship and self-efficacy. The indirect and total effects of perceived health status and relationship on career maturity were not statistically significant; however, the indirect and total effects of self-efficacy on career maturity were statistically significant. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop teaching methods according to student management plans for dental hygiene by comprehensively perceived health status, relationship, and self-efficacy affecting department satisfaction and career maturity.
