한국인 아동의 치궁발육에 관한 연구 (A LONGITUDINAL STUDY ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF DENTAL ARCHES IN KOREAN CHILDREN)

  • The purpose of this longitudinal study was to measure and analyze the width and length changes of dental arches at age 7 to 9. 66 children were selected for this study. Stone models obtained from these children were measured and analyzed annually. The results were as follow. 1. The widths of upper arch increased by age both in males and females except the region of second deciduous molars. 2. The widths of lower arch increased by age significantly both in males and females. 3. The lengths of dental arches increased by age both in males and females at anterior portion. ; did not increase at Posterior portion. 4. The upper widths of males were wider than those of females at age 9, but no significant difference were present at age 7 and 8. 5. The differences of the lower widths between males and females were not present except the region of the second deciduous molars (E-E) at age 7. 6. There were few differences between the lengths of males and females except the posterior lengthes at age 7. 7. The widths and lengths of upper arches were difinitely wider and longer than lower arches.

  • Several FE models were developed based on micro-CT images of a mandibular specimen. A new dental implant model was suggested from parameter study for the relation between shape and interfacial stress of dental implants. It is found that the proposed model is highly beneficial.

  • The author studied on the dental arch widths and lengths and height of palates at 3 groups of dentition: mixed dentition, early permanent dentition, young adult, having normal occlusion and dentition. The models of the 336 maxillary and mandibular case, made from alginate-base hydrocolloid impressions were measured and analyzed statistically. The result as follows; 1. The upper intercanine width increased between the mixed dentition group and early permanent dentition group but there was no change in the young adult group in both sexes. The lower intercanine width increased between the mixed dentition group and early permanent dention group in the male. 2. The upper and lower 1st bimolar width increased slightly with age in the male but there was no change in the female. 3, The sex difference found in this study was one of absolute size, the female being slightly smaller than the male in the early permanent dentition group and young adult. 4. The arch length had no notable sexual differences and decreased between the mixed dentition group and early permanent dentition group. There was no change in the arch length in the young adult. 5. The height of palate increased gradually with age.

다른 스캐닝 방법으로 제작된 리튬 디실리케이트 단관의 변연 및 내면 적합도 평가 (Evaluation of the marginal and internal fit of lithium disilicate crowns fabricated by different scanning methods)

  • Purpose: This study was to compare adaptations of lithium disilicate CAD/CAM crowns fabricated with different scanning systems. Methods: This study selected the mandibular right first molar as an abutment for experiments and produced 10 working models. Lithium disilicate crowns appropriate for each abutment were produced by using a CEREC$^{(R)}$ CAD/CAM system. The independent t-test was then used to compare and analyze the data obtained from the two groups(${\alpha}$=0.05). Results: Mean(SD) adaptation were $86.93(22.82){\mu}m$ for the InS group, $88.42(26.77){\mu}m$ for the ExS group. They were no statistically significant differences between groups for adaptation(p>0.05). Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, the results suggest that the accuracy of all investigated optical scanner were satisfactory for clinical use. Further assessment and improvement of the lithium disilicate ceramic for the fabrication of FPDs is evidently still required.

유리섬유 보강재를 삽입한 하악 레진의치 인상면의 정밀성 평가 (Precision evaluation of impression surface of lower complete dentures reinforced with glass fiber)

  • Purpose: This study is to compare and analyze the precision of glass fiber resin dentures. Methods: A lower edentulous model was prepared. Ten study models were produced using Type IV stone. Ten wax lower resin dentures containing artificial teeth were prepared. The lower wax denture was buried with plaster and deflasking was performed to remove the wax. Five conventional lower resin dentures and five glass fiber lower resin dentures were produced. The scanning spray was coated on the impression surface and then scanned. Independent sample t-test were performed using statistical software. Results: In the color different map, which is a qualitative evaluation, the green area of the precision of the conventional lower resin denture occupied the whole. The glass fiber conventional resin dentures had many negative and positive area. In quantitative evaluation, the RMS of conventional lower resin was 89.83 ㎛ and that of fiberglass resin was 224.92 ㎛. The two groups showed statistically significant differences (p<0.05). Conclusion: Conventional lower resin dentures were superior in precision, and glass fiber resin dentures would have to improve the process.

Effect of different arch widths on the accuracy of three intraoral scanners

  • PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to compare the accuracy of three intraoral scanner (IOS) systems with three different dental arch widths. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Three dental models with different intermolar widths (small, medium, and large) were attached to metal bars of different lengths (30, 40, and 50 mm). The bars were measured with a coordinate measuring machine and used as references. Three IOSs were compared: TRIOS 3 (TRI), True Definition (TD), and Dental Wings (DW). The relative length and angular deviation of both ends of the metal bars from the scan data set (n = 15) were calculated and analyzed. RESULTS. Comparing among scanners in terms of trueness, the relative length deviation of DW in the small (1.28%) and medium (1.08%) arches were significantly higher than TRI (0.46% and 0.48%) and TD (0.33% and 0.18%). The angular deviation of DW in the small (1.75°) and medium (1.83°) arches were also significantly greater than TRI (0.63° and 0.40°) and TD (0.55° and 0.89°). Comparing within scanner, the large arch of DW showed better accuracy than other arch sizes (P < .05). On the other hand, the larger arch of TD presented a greater tendency of angular deviation in terms of trueness. No significant differences were found in terms of trueness between the arch widths of TRI group. CONCLUSION. The different widths of the dental arches can affect the accuracy of some intraoral scanners in full arch scan.

Intestinal organoids as advanced modeling platforms to study the role of host-microbiome interaction in homeostasis and disease

  • After birth, animals are colonized by a diverse community of microorganisms. The digestive tract is known to contain the largest number of microbiome in the body. With emergence of the gut-brain axis, the importance of gut microbiome and its metabolites in host health has been extensively studied in recent years. The establishment of organoid culture systems has contributed to studying intestinal pathophysiology by replacing current limited models. Owing to their architectural and functional complexity similar to a real organ, co-culture of intestinal organoids with gut microbiome can provide mechanistic insights into the detrimental role of pathobiont and the homeostatic function of commensal symbiont. Here organoid-based bacterial co-culture techniques for modeling host-microbe interactions are reviewed. This review also summarizes representative studies that explore impact of enteric microorganisms on intestinal organoids to provide a better understanding of host-microbe interaction in the context of homeostasis and disease.

Influence of Crown Margin Design on the Stress Distribution in Maxillary Canine Restored by All-Ceramic Crown: A Finite Element Analysis

  • Purpose: To investigate the influence of crown margin design on the stress distribution and to localize critical sites in maxillary canine under functional loading by using three dimensional finite element analysis. Materials and Methods: The bite force of 100 N, 150 N, and 200 N was applied with an angulation of $45^{\circ}$ to the longitudinal axis of tooth. Six models were restored with IPS e.max (Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein) with a different margin design. With lingual ledge and various thicknesses, three different core ceramics were designed in each model. Result: In the core ceramic, the maximum tensile stresses were found at the labiocervical region. In the veneering ceramic the maximum tensile stresses were found at the area where the force was applied in all models. Conclusion: Shoulder and chamfer margin types are acceptable for all-ceramic rehabilitations. A ledge on the core ceramic at cervical region may affect the strength of all-ceramic crowns.

Stress Analysis of the Occlusal Force on the Mandibular First Premolar

  • The occlusal force of the tooth leads to loss of tooth tissue owing to attrition and abrasion, and may cause abfraction and pathological change of the dentin. Thus, we developed finite element models, examined them by applying ordinary occlusal force, and analyzed the stress distribution. Specimens used were mandibular first premolars from 15 Korean males and 13 females and were made into finite element models from medical images that were obtained using a Micro-CT. We have found that the irregular feature of the tooth is not only useful to masticating and pronouncing as well known, but it is also suitable for protecting inner tissue by dispersing stress and delivering proper pressure to periodontal tissue to continue a physiological action. Also, image analysis could let us know the factor that is the cause of a disorder due to stress concentration in the cervical line. These results are expected to support the field of dental treatment planning, operating procedure and clinical trial, and the advance of technical expertise to develop implants and dentures.

Enamel matrix derivative for replanted teeth in animal models: a systematic review and meta-analysis

  • Objectives: To investigate the effect of enamel matrix derivative (EMD) on periodontal healing of replanted teeth in animal models. Materials and Methods: The authors searched MEDLINE, PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Web of Knowledge and Scopus for articles published up to Oct 2012. Animal studies in which EMD was applied in transplanted or replanted teeth with adequate controls and histological data were considered. Normal periodontal healing or root resorption determined by histology after EMD was applied in replanted teeth with adequate controls was used as outcome measures. The following search strategy was used: ('Emdogain' OR 'enamel matrix proteins' OR 'enamel matrix derivative') AND ('avulsion' OR 'transplantion' OR 'autotransplantation' OR 'replantation'). Results: Six animal studies were included in the final review. There was great heterogeneity in study design among included studies. Two studies with similar study designs were identified and analyzed by a meta-analysis. The pooled estimates showed a significantly higher normal healing and surface resorption and significantly less inflammatory and replacement resorption in EMD-treated groups compared with non-EMD-treated groups. Conclusions: With the limitations of this systematic review, the use of EMD led to greater normal periodontal healing and surface root resorption and less inflammatory and replacement root resorption in the presence of periodontal ligaments. However, no definite conclusion could be drawn with regard to the effect of EMD on periodontal healing and root resorption when no periodontal ligaments exist.
