  • With the development of digital dentistry, various intra-oral scanners which acquire intraoral image without conventional impression taking and stone pouring steps have been introduced. Fixed dental prostheses such as inlay, onlay, crown, and bridge fabricated by CAD/CAM technique combined with digital impressions is getting popular due to the recent rapid progress of digital impression taking system. In comparison with traditional prosthetic procedure, the advantages of intraoral image acquiring and CAD/CAM technique are as follows; the omission of conventional impression materials, reduced workflow step, and increased efficiency by online communication with clinic and laboratory. This review article covers some opinions about the suitable scanning procedures for the various prosthodontic treatments and the utilization of digital intraoral scanner and CAD/CAM system.

  • PURPOSE. This study evaluated the accuracies of different bite registration techniques for implant-fixed prostheses using three dimensional file analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Implant fixtures were placed on the mandibular right second premolar, and the first and second molar in a polyurethane model. Aluwax (A), Pattern Resin (P), and Blu-Mousse (B) were used as the bite registration materials on the healing abutments (H) or temporary abutments (T). The groups were classified into HA, HP, HB, TA, TP, and TB according to each combination. The group using the bite impression coping was the BC group; impression taking and bite registration were performed simultaneously. After impression and bite taking, the scan bodies were connected to the lab analogs of the casts. These casts were scanned using a model scanner. The distances between two reference points in three-dimensional files were measured in each group. One-way ANOVA and Duncan's test were used at the 5% significance level. RESULTS. The smallest distance discrepancy was observed in the TB group using the temporary abutments. The Blu-Mousse and HP groups showed the largest distance discrepancy. The TB and BC groups showed a lower distance discrepancy than the HP group (P=.001), and there was no significant difference between the groups using the temporary abutments and healing abutments (P>.05). CONCLUSION. Although this study has limitations as an in-vitro investigation, the groups using the temporary abutments to hold the Blu-Mousse record and bite impression coping showed greater accuracy than the group using the healing abutments to hold the pattern resin record.

  • Purpose : This study sought to evaluate the dimensional stability of the SITT (Silicone Index Tooth Tray) impression system and to determine whether providing space for wash impression material in SITT is a necessary step in obtaining accurate prostheses. Materials and methods : After mounting metal dies with shoulder and chamfer margins arbitrarily, SITT was fabricated using Blu-mousse$^{(R)}$. To test the dimensional stability of the SITT system for margin design, the shoulder margin and chamfer margin were evaluated. Furthermore, to test the effect of space for wash impression material, 0.5mm space in SITT and zero space in SITT were statistically compared. Results : 1. There was no significant difference between the group with shoulder margin and that with chamfer margin. 2. There was no significant difference between the group with 0.5mm space and that with zero space for wash impression material. Conclusions : Considering the limitations of this study, the dimensional stability of the SITT system did not interfere with the margin design. Space for the wash impression material was also unnecessary.

  • Purpose: We investigated the marginal fit between abutment and metal copings according to impression technique, wax block types, and metal types. Methods: We selected the traditional impression method of using rubber impression materials and the digital impression method of using oral scanners, three types of wax blocks, and two types of metal, both of which were domestically and commercially available, were selected to produce metal copings, and the marginal fit was determined through the use of silicon replication. Results: The measurements of axial wall fit revealed that the IYV specimens had the best fit, with a mean gap of 24.11±5.95 ㎛, followed by CEV, CHV, CSS, CSV, CES, CHS, and IYS specimens (mean: 33.44±8.41 ㎛). The differences were not statistically significant. The marginal gap measurements showed that the CEV specimen had the smallest gap, 17.25±4.13 ㎛, followed by the CSV, CHV, CSS, CES, CHS, IYV, and IYS specimen (mean: 43.47±15.63 ㎛). The differences were statistically significant. Conclusion: The axial wall fit of the metal coping (VeraBond2V; Aalba Dent, Inc., Fairfield, CA, USA) produced by the lost wax technique with the traditional impression method was excellent. The marginal fit of the metal coping (VeraBond 2V) produced by wax milling with the use of an oral scanner was also excellent. The marginal fit of the metal coping was within the clinically acceptable limits in all groups.

  • The adjustable dental impression trays were made for being adjusted their width automatically along the width of patient's dental arch. The purpose of this study was to investigate the retentive force of adjustable dental impression trays made of different synthetic resin materials. Three pairs of adjustable trays were made of ABS(acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) synthetic resin, polyurethane synthetic resin and polycarbonate synthetic resin with a hole and without a rim on the border area of them. The experiment was done with the horse-shoe shaped metal plate to pull out the set impression body from the tray jig which was made for holding the tray on the lower part of Universal Testing Machine(UTM, Zwick Z020, Zwick Co., Germany). After the alginate impression in the tray was allowed to set four minutes, a tensile force was applied at right angles to the tray which had been previously seated on the jig. The force was applied to measure a maximum force by use of UTM at a constant strain rate 100mm per minute. The results obtained in this study were as follows : 1. The upper trays were showed higher retentive force than lower trays in three tray materials. 2. There was no significant difference in the retentive force of the tray materials(p>0.05).

  • The accuracy and dimensional stability of impression materials are one of the most important factors for successful prosthodontic treatment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of several dental elastomeric impression materials used widely and clinically : Impregum-$F^{(R)},\;Permlastic^{(R)},\;Silascon^{(R)},\;Perfect^{(R)},\;Xantopren^{(R)}$. There have been many studies to evaluate the accuracy of impression materials. But it has not been decided yet, which method was most suitable for the evaluation of the accuracy. In this study, two resin teeth, #15 & 25, were prepared with rounded shoulder margin and 90 degree cavosurface angle. For the polysulfide rubber and polyether, the custom tray was made at least 24 hours prior to impression taking. For the silicone rubber materials, putty/wash impression technique was applied in taking impressions. Marginal openings of the castings on the master dies and prepared resin teeth were measured under stereomicroscope. The results were statistically analyzed and compared between tested impression materials. The results were as follows ; 1. In the overall accuracy of impression materials, polyether was the most accurate one, followed by polysulfide, additional silicone and condensation silicone. 2. On the first model pouring, condensation silicone had the largest discrepancies and there was significant difference compared to the other impression materials. 3. Polysulfide had the least discrepancies in the first model pouring, but showed larger discrepancies in the immediate second pouring than the first pouring. 4. On the immediate second pouring, the discrepancy of polyether was shown to be the smallest, while the largest one was additional silicone. 5. Polyether and polysulfide rubber using custom impression trays showed superior accuracy to silicone rubber, putty/wash impression technique.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate and compare wettability and setting time of twelve polyvinylsiloxane impression pastes. For comparing the wettability, the contact angle of a water drop on the impression materials was measured. It is important for impression materials to have higher wettability when trying to make impressions of interproximal spaces and gingival crevices. The higher wettability the better the material will flow into these spaces and the more accurate the impression. An ideal impression material will have adequate working time but a fast intraoral setting time. The clinician needs time to inject material into the sulcus, place the impression material into the tray and position it in the mouth, but the material should set rapidly to reduce time in the patient's mouth. It is considered that the results obtained in this study will provide guideline information for the manufacturing of impression materials and for selecting appropriate impression materials.
