Objectives: The aim of this study is to investigate the mechanical properties and antibacterial effects on Streptococcus mutans of composite resins containing phytoncide. Methods: Phytoncide was mixed with commercial composite resins at 0 (control), 1.25, 2.5, 3.75, and 5.0 weight percentage (wt%). Mechanical properties related to composite resins such as surface hardness, depth of cure, and flexural strength were measured. Antibacterial effects of composite resins were analyzed by using Streptococcus mutans (ATCC 25175). The results were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance followed by Tukey's test (p<0.05). Results: Composite resins that contain low wt% of phytoncide demonstrated no significant difference in surface hardness, depth of cure, and flexural strength (p>0.05). However, composite resins that contain high wt% of phytoncide had significantly decreased mechanical properties (p<0.05). In terms of antibacterial effects, composite resins containing phytoncide inhibited the growth of S. mutans. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that novel composite resins containing phytoncide have effective antibacterial properties while maintaining the originally important mechanical features of composite resins.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to know the physical properties of UDMA dental composite resins containing two photosensitizers, PD, DA, as a photosensitizer instead of CQ. We want to know Remaining Double Bond(RDB) of UDMA unfilled resin and diametral tensile strength and flexural strength of composite resin containing PD and DA were compared with those of CQ, most widely used photosensitizer for dental composite resins. Methods: The RDB of UDMA studied by FT-IR spectroscopy increased with irradiation time. The composite resins were tested for their physical properties. The dental composite resins were made with UDMA as a monomer, silanized silica as filler, N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DAEM) as amine initiator, and one of the two kinds of new photosensitizers. Results: The relative RDB of UDMA was in the order: DA > CQ > PD but the physical properties of the composite resins show PD and DA with higher results compared with that containing CQ. The reason for the results is that PD and DA serve not only as a photosensitizer but also as a photo-crosslinking agent. Conclusion: PD and DA show as effective photosensizers, suitable for UDMA dental composite resin compare with a higher efficiency than CQ.
Purpose: The author performed experiments on the microhardness and the marginal fitness of composite resins after polymerizing 4 kinds of composite resins on MOD standard specimens. Methods: For this study, in order to compare the microhardness and the marginal fitness of 4 kinds of composite resins. Results: The results are as follows. 1. In case of the microhardness, Tescera scored the highest among the four kinds of composite resins. 2. In case of the marginal fitness, Premise Indirect scored the highest. However, there was no statistically significant difference, all staying in clinically practical range. 3. Considering the above results, among the four kinds of composite resins, the author advises to use Tescera during teeth restoration which scored the highest in the micro- hardness. Conclusion: Conclusion: All of the composite marginal fitness were within the clinically useful range.
PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to investigate simulated localized and generalized wear of indirect composite resins used for implant supported provisional restorations. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The study investigated ten indirect composite resins. Two kinds of wear were simulated by 400,000 cycles in a Leinfelder-Suzuki (Alabama) machine. Localized wear was simulated with a stainless-steel ball bearing antagonist and generalized with a flat-ended stainless-steel cylinder antagonist. The tests were carried out in water slurry of polymethyl methacrylate beads. Wear was measured using a Proscan 2100 noncontact profilometer in conjunction with Proscan and AnSur 3D software. RESULTS. Both localized and generalized wear were significantly different (P<.05) among the indirect composite resins. SR Nexco and Gradia Plus showed significantly less wear than the other indirect composite resins. The rank order of wear was same in both types of wear simulation. CONCLUSION. Indirect composite resins are recommended when a provisional implant-supported restoration is required to function in place over a long period. Although only some indirect composite resins showed similar wear resistance to CAD/CAM composite resins, the wear resistance of all the indirect composite resins was higher than that of bis-acryl base provisional and polymethyl methacrylate resins.
Composite resins, commonly used in clinical practice, have been developed to improve aesthetics to obtain smooth surfaces. Although the restored composite resin has a smooth surface, it gradually becomes rough over time. Therefore, this study measured glossiness to evaluate the surface of various composite resins and attempted to evaluate the maintenance of glossiness of composite resins by observing surfaces that change to roughness. Specimens were produced using resin used in clinical practice: Gradia direct anterior (GA), Tetric N-Ceram (TN), Ceram.X Sphere TEC one (CX), Filtek Z350XT (FT), Estelite sigma quick (ES). After creating a smooth surface with slide glass, five locations were randomly selected to measure surface gloss, and the average was the representative value of the specimen. Roughness was applied to the specimen under water pouring at the same speed and pressure using SiC paper #2400, 1200, and 400. The gloss unit of different SiC papers was measured. To evaluate the gloss unit and gloss retention between composite resins, one-way analysis of variance and Tukey multiple comparisons test were used. As a result of the study, there was a difference in gloss unit of specimens produced under the same conditions. Although the degree differed depending on the composite resin, there was also a difference in gloss retention. Based on the findings, composite resins show differences in gloss due to their different characteristics. Ceram.X Sphere TEC one (CX) showing the lowest gloss retention and Estelite sigma quick (ES) showing the highest.
The Tribological evaluation of commercial dental composite resins containing prepolymerized particle fillers was investigated. Composite resins such as Metafil, Silux Plus, Heliomolar, and Palfique Estelite were selected as specimens. In the wear tests, a ball-on-flat wear test method was used. The friction coefficient of Metafil was quite high. The wear resistance of Silux Plus and Palfique Estelite was better than that of Metafil and Heliomolar under the same experimental conditions. The main wear mechanism of the composite resins containing prepolymerized particle fillers was abrasive wear caused by the brittle fracture of the prepolymerized particles and the debonding of the filler and the matrix.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the flexural strength of indirect composite resins with different polymerization conditions. Methods: Ten specimens ($2mm{\times}2mm{\times}25mm$) of each composite resins (Tescera (T), Gradia (S) and Sinfony (S)) were fabricated by two polymerization methods : manufacturers's and light heat pressure. Composite resins polymerized by manufacturers's method and light heat pressure served as control (TS, GS and SS) and experimental groups (TE, GE and SE), respectively. The composite resins were tested for flexural strength and the surface of composite resins were observed with scanning electron microscope (SEM) under X1,000 magnification. Results: The flexural strength values of cured composite resin decreased in the following order: TE (195.4MPa), TS (179.8MPa), GE (169.9MPa), SE (137.7MPa), SS (111.1MPa) and GS (100.9MPa) groups. Conclusion: The flexural strength values between the control and the experimental groups were not significantly different although experimental groups showed higher flexural strength values than control groups.
As the development of nanotechnology, the use of composite resins which containing nanofillers becomes popular. The purpose of this study was to test the degree of polymerization of nanofillercontaining composite resins. For the study, three different nanofiller-containing composite resins and two different light-curing units were used. To evaluate the degree of polymerization, the maximum polymerization shrinkage taking place during the light curing, and the microhardness, after the light curing, were measured. As results, two light-curing units exhibited a similar emission spectrum to that of the included photoinitiator, camphorquinone. The only difference between the light-curing units were the width of the emission spectrum. Three different composite resins showed different microhardness values. Among them, Grandio showed the greatest microhardness value. However, there was less microhardness difference on the top and bottom surfaces due to the difference of the light-curing units. The maximum polymerization shrinkage values were also similar in the tested specimens regardless of the difference of the light-curing units. However, Grandio showed the least polymerization shrinkage. According to the manufacturers' data, Grandio showed the highest filler content(vol%).
Composite resins are the most commonly used dental restorative materials after minimally invasive dental procedures, and they offer an aesthetically pleasing appearance. An ideal composite restorative material should have wear properties similar to those of tooth tissues. Wear refers to the damaging, gradual loss or deformation of a material at solid surfaces. Depending on the mechanism of action, wear can be categorized as abrasive, adhesive, fatigue, or corrosive. Currently used composite resins cover a wide range of materials with diverse properties, offering dental clinicians multiple choices for anterior and posterior teeth. In order to improve the mechanical properties and the resistance to wear of composite materials, many types of monomers, silane coupling agents, and reinforcing fillers have been developed. Since resistance to wear is an important factor in determining the clinical success of composite resins, the purpose of this literature review was to define what constitutes wear. The discussion focuses on factors that contribute to the extent of wear as well as to the prevention of wear. Finally, the behavior of various types of existing composite materials such as nanohybrid, flowable, and computer-assisted design/computer-assisted manufacturing materials, was investigated, along with the factors that may cause or contribute to their wear.
