  • Induction heating is the process in which an electrically conducting object (usually a metal) is heated by electromagnetic induction through heat generated in the object by eddy currents. The main advantage of an induction heating device is the generation of the heat inside the target object itself. Hence, non-contact and safe heating devices are widely used in many industrial and medical fields. Recently, a new dental implant system was developed using a shape-memory alloy, wherein an artificial tooth could be easily removed from the dental implant by heating. This paper discusses the development of an induction-heating device to remove the dental crown in the new implant system. First, the finite element simulation of electromagnetic and thermal coupling analysis was implemented to obtain the temperature distributions of the target object for various frequencies, input currents, and coil shapes. Based on the simulation results, experiments were conducted by using prototypes, and an induction heating device was developed to remove the dental crown from the implant.

  • Complex human tissues harbor stem cells and precursor cells, which are responsible for tissue development or repair. Recently, dental tissues such as dental pulp, periodontal ligament (PDL), dental follicle have been identified as easily accessible sources of undifferentiated cells. These tissues contain mesenchymal stem cells that can be differentiate into bone, cartilage, fat or muscle by exposing them to specific growth conditions. In this study, the authors procured the stem cell from pulp, PDL, and dental follicle and differentiate them into osteoblast and examine the bone induction capacity. Dental pulp stem cell (DPSC), periodontal ligament stem cell (PDLSC), and dental follicle precursor cell (DFPC) were obtained from human 3rd molar and cultured. Each cell was analyzed for presence of stem cell by fluorescence activated cell sorter (FACs) against CD44, CD105 and CD34, CD45. Each stem cell was cultured, expanded and grown in an osteogenic culture medium to allow formation of a layer of extracellular bone matrix. Osteogenic pathway was checked by alizarin red staining, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity test and RT-PCR for ALP and osteocalcin (OCN) gene expression. According to results from FACs, mesenchymal stem cell existed in pulp, PDL, and dental follicle. As culturing with bone differentiation medium, stem cells were differentiated to osteoblast like cell. Compare with stem cell from pulp, PDL and dental follicle-originated stem cell has more osteogenic effect and it was assumed that the character of donor cell was able to affect on differential potency of stem cell. From this article, we are able to verify the pulp, PDL, and dental follicle from extracted tooth, and these can be a source of osteoblast and stem cell for tissue engineering.

  • PURPOSE. This in vitro study investigates the effect of different post-rinsing times and methods on the trueness and precision of denture base resin manufactured through stereolithography. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Ninety clear photopolymer resin specimens were fabricated and divided into nine groups (n = 10) based on rinsing times and methods. All specimens were rinsed with 99% isopropanol alcohol for 5, 10, and 15 min using three methods-automated, ultrasonic cleaning, and hand washing. The specimens were polymerized for 30 min at 40℃. For trueness, the scanned intaglio surface of each SLA denture base was superimposed on the original standard tessellation language (STL) file using best-fit alignment (n = 10). For precision, the scanned intaglio surface of the STL file in each specimen group was superimposed across each specimen (n = 45). The root mean square error (RMSE) was measured, and the data were analyzed statistically through one-way ANOVA and Tukey test (α < .05). RESULTS. The 10-min automated group exhibited the lowest RMSE. For trueness, this was significantly different from specimens in the 5-min hand-washed group (P < .05). For precision, this was significantly different from those of other groups (P < .05), except for the 15-min automated and 15-min ultrasonic groups. The color map results indicated that the 10-min automated method exhibited the most uniform distribution of the intaglio surface adaptation. CONCLUSION. The optimal postprocessing rinsing times and methods for achieving clear photopolymer resin were found to be the automated method with rinsing times of 10 and 15 min, and the ultrasonic method with a rinsing time of 15 min.

  • Nowadays, additive manufacturing (AM) technology is a promising process to fabricate complex shaped devices applied in medical and dental services. Among the AM processes, a DLP (digital light processing) type 3D printing process has some advantages, such as high precision, relatively low cost, etc. In this work, we propose a simple method to fabricate precise dental models using a DLP 3D printer. After 3D printing, a part is commonly post-cured using secondary UV-curing equipment for complete polymerization. However, some shrinkage occurs during the post-curing process, so we adaptively control the UV-exposure time on each layer for over- or under-curing to change the local shape-size of a part in the DLP process. From the results, the shrinkage amounts in the post-curing process vary due to the UV-dose in 3D printing. We believe that the proposed method can be utilized to fabricate dental models precisely, even with a change of the 3D CAD model.

  • Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of CAD/CAM ceramic thickness on shade. Methods: 24 disk-shaped ceramic specimens (E.Max CAD & Empress CAD, $12mm{\times}12mm$) were prepared and divided into 4 groups (n=6). Ceramic specimens in 2 thicknesses (0.8 mm, 1.0 mm) were made low translucency(LT) shade A2. All specimens were measured as L*, a*, b* using spectrophotometer. The color differences(${\Delta}E$ values) between the specimen and a control target block ($12{\times}12{\times}1.2mm$) were calculated. Two-way ANOVA performed between 2 groups(material and thickness). Results: As the thickness increased, the $L^*$ (for all groups) and $b^*$ value (for all groups) increased and the $a^*$ value(for LR group) decreased. The mean color differences caused by thickness was acceptible (${\Delta}E$ > 2) for group LD1. But the mean color differences by thickness were not selected (${\Delta}E$ < 2) for group LD2, LR1, LR2. Conclusions: The different thickness can influence the final color of CAD/CAM ceramic.
