Sarhan and Kundu (2009) introduced a new distribution named as the generalized linear failure rate distribution. This distribution generalizes several well known distributions. The probability density function of the generalized linear failure rate distribution can be right skewed or unimodal and its hazard function can be increasing, decreasing or bathtub shaped. This distribution can be used quite effectively to analyze lifetime data in place of linear failure rate, generalized exponential and generalized Rayleigh distributions. In this paper, we apply the simulated annealing algorithm to obtain the maximum likelihood point estimates of the parameters of the generalized linear failure rate distribution. Simulated annealing algorithm can not only find the global optimum; it is also less likely to fail because it is a very robust algorithm. The estimators obtained using simulated annealing algorithm have been compared with the corresponding traditional maximum likelihood estimators for their risks.

Abstract. Camilo Dagum proposed several variants of a new model for the size distribution of personal income in a series of papers in the 1970s. He traced the genesis of the Dagum distributions in applied economics and points out parallel developments in several branches of the applied statistics literature. The main aim of this paper is to define a bivariate Dagum distribution so that the marginals have Dagum distributions. It is observed that the joint probability density function and the joint cumulative distribution function can be expressed in closed forms. Several properties of this distribution such as marginals, conditional distributions and product moments have been discussed. The maximum likelihood estimates for the unknown parameters of this distribution and their approximate variance-covariance matrix have been obtained. Some simulations have been performed to see the performances of the MLEs. One data analysis has been performed for illustrative purpose.
We propose an accurate approximation method via discrete Krawtchouk orthogonal polynomials to the distribution of a sum of independent but non-identically distributed binomial random variables. This approximation is a weighted binomial distribution with no need for continuity correction unlike commonly used density approximation methods such as saddlepoint, Gram-Charlier A type(GC), and Gaussian approximation methods. The accuracy obtained from the proposed approximation is compared with saddlepoint approximations applied by Eisinga et al. [4], which are the most accurate method among higher order asymptotic approximation methods. The numerical results show that the proposed approximation in general provide more accurate estimates over the entire range for the target probability mass function including the right-tail probabilities. In addition, the method is mathematically tractable and computationally easy to program.

A critical evaluation is made of the spectral bias which occurs in the use of a laser doppler velocimeter(LDV). Two processing algorithms are considered for spectral estimates: the sample and hold interpolation method(SH) and the nonuniform Shannon reconstruction technique(SR). Assessment is made of these for varying data densities $(0.05{\le}d.d.{\le}5)$ and turbulence levels(t.i.=30%, 100%). As an improved version of the spectral estimator, the utility of POCS (the projection onto convex sets) has been tested in the present study. This algorithm is found useful to be in the region when $d.d.{\gep}3.$
I present the mean metallicity distribution of stars in the Milky Way based on photometry from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. I utilize an empirically calibrated set of stellar isochrones developed in previous work to estimate the metallicities of individual stars to a precision of 0.2 dex for reasonably bright stars across the survey area. I also obtain more precise metallicity estimates using priors from the Gaia parallaxes for relatively nearby stars. Close to the Galactic mid-plane (|Z| < 2 kpc), a mean metallicity map reveals deviations from the mirror symmetry between the northern and southern hemispheres, displaying wave-like oscillations. The observed metallicity asymmetry structure is almost parallel to the Galactic mid-plane, and coincides with the previously known asymmetry in the stellar number density distribution. This result reinforces the previous notion of the plane-parallel vertical waves propagating through the disk, which have been excited by a massive halo substructure such as the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy plunging through the Milky Way's disk. This work provides evidence that the Gaia phase-space spiral may continue out to |Z| ~ 1.5 kpc.
The cosmological constant is accountable for the accelerated expansion of our Universe. Observational data have provided a tight constraint on the cosmic star formation history from z = 8 to the present. What happens to the star formation rate beyond z=0? I will discuss the star formation rates, along with the properties of the intergalactic mediumfrom our suite of simulations into the future. Since Lambda becomes dominant in the future of our universe, I further simulate counter-factual universes to assign anthropic weights to each universe within the multiverse setting. I will argue that using the asymptotic star formation efficiency as weights, we almost double previous estimates of observers living in universes similar to ours. The expected value of the energy density of Lambda is also closer to the observed value. I will also discuss potential future works to improve the applicability of the anthropic reasoning of the cosmological constant.

This article introduces a method for estimating the conditional hazard function of a real-valued response variable based on a functional variable. The method uses local linear estimation of the conditional density and cumulative distribution function and is applied to a functional stationary ergodic process where the explanatory variable is in a semi-metric space and the response is a scalar value. We also examine the uniform almost complete convergence of this estimation technique.
Sterba's theory that stem number maintaining maximum basal area per ha is maximum stem number of a stand, had been applied to data from 103 temporary plots in even-aged Pinus densiflora stands in Kangwon province, Korea and a maximum stem number and mortality model was prepared. DBH growth model which estimates dbh with the independent variables of stem number per ha and dominant height shows the good statistical performance, and explains well differences in dbh growth that would be caused by stem number per ha and dominant height. Basal area model derived from dbh growth model also explains well differences in basal area according to stem number per ha and dominant height. The maximum stem number curve, which is derived from stem number per ha at maximum basal area for dominant height and dbh, represents well the upper range of stem number per ha observed. And maximum stand density index derived from the maximum stem number model for dbh could be used for the index of maximum potential density of a stand. The maximum stem number model and maximum stand density index in this study were not based on stand data with maximum density but based on the temporary data from stands with various density. This maximum stem number model can be applied to the estimation of mortality and maximum potential volume.

The purpose of this study is to develop regional regression models to estimate mean low flow for ungauged basins. The unregulated streamflow data observed at 12 multipurpose dams and 4 irrigation dams were analyzed for determining mean low flows. Various types of regression models were developed using the relationship between mean low flows and various sets of watershed characteristics such as drainage area, average slope, drainage density, mean annual precipitation, runoff curve number. The performance of each regression model for estimating mean low flows was assessed by comparison with the results obtained from the observed data. It was found that a regional regression model explained by drainage area, the mean annual precipitation, and runoff curve number showed the best performance. The regression model presented in this study also gives better estimates of mean low flow than the estimates by the drainage-area ratio method and the previous regression model.

A giant jellyfish (Nemopilema nomurai), which is presumed developing in the East China Sea, is recently one of major issues in the Northeast Asia region due to its fatal damage to the fishery. The biomass estimates have generally been conducted by trawl sampling and sighting survey methods. The biological research is also needed to clarify such environmental origin or diurnal migration patterns. While trawl sampling or sighting survey methods are effective to investigate its density estimates in its distributed community of near bottom or surface, they have a problem in investigation on the vertical distribution of jellyfishes. In this case, an echo sounding detection would have an advantage to survey it more extensively and effectively. This trial was conducted to observe the vertical distribution of giant jellyfish, where thermocline strongly formed, during mooring at each station of the East China Sea and southern coastal area using acoustical and optical methods. By the results, they were observed to exit and move at the water column under the thermocline using the optical camera and echo sounder system, and the information was analyzed to find out the acoustical sound scattering characteristics relatives to 120kHz frequency. These results can be utilized effectively to estimate the vertical distribution and biomass of Giant jellyfish with comparing results from trawl sampling and sighting survey methods, hereafter.
