The BOD removal efficiency according to HRT of the continuous inflow SBR process was decreased from 92.1 ~ 96.0% at HRT 9 ~ 15 h to 86.9 ~ 90.7% at HRT 6 h, but a stable removal efficiency was shown up to HRT 6 h. The T-N removal rate was decreased to 80.1 ~ 87.9% at HRT 12 ~ 15 h, to 71.9 ~ 87.0% at HRT 9 h, and to 60.1 ~ 65.7% at HRT 6 h. As a result of the test of removing organic matter and nitrogen, the optimum HRT of the continuous inflow SBR reactor is determined as 9 h. The TCODcr removal efficiency was 88.4 ~ 96.0% and the TBOD removal efficiency was 92.1 ~ 98.1% as a result of examination of organic matter removal efficiency according to a change in the recycling rate (1 ~ 5Q) at HRT 9 h, suggesting that the a change in the recycling rate has a minimal effect on the removal of organic matter. The T-N removal efficiency was 70.3 ~ 80.4% at 1 ~ 2Q, 77.2 ~ 85.6% at 3Q and 61.5 ~ 80.8% at 4 ~ 5Q according to a change in the recycling rate. The TP removal efficiency was reduced to 75.0 ~ 84.6% at 1 ~ 4Q and to 63.3 ~ 72.4% at 5Q. This is presumably because the release and ingestion of phosphorus (P) by microorganisms is not performed smoothly at 5Q or more. Therefore, the optimum recycling rate for removing organic matter and nutrients was found to be 3Q.
In most agricultural soils, ammonium ($NH_4{^+}$) from fertilizer is quickly converted to nitrate ($NO_3{^-}$) by the process of nitrification which is crucial to the efficiency of N fertilizers and their impact on the environment. The salinity significantly affects efficiency of N fertilizer in reclaimed tidal soil, and the soil pH may influence the conversion rate of ammonium to nitrate and ultimately affect nitrogen losses from the soil profile. Several results suggest that pH has important effects on recovery of fall-applied N in the spring if field conditions are favorable for leaching and denitrification except that effects of soil pH are not serious under unfavorable conditions for N loss by these mechanisms. Soil pH, therefore, deserves attention as an important factor in the newly reclaimed tidal soils with applying N. However, fate of N studies in a newly reclaimed tidal soils have been rarely studied, especially under the conditions of saline-sodic and high pH. Therefore, understanding the fate of nitrogen species transformed from urea treated into the reclaimed tidal soil is important for nutrient management and environmental quality. In this article, we reviewed yields of rice and fate of nitrogen with respect to the properties of reclaimed tidal soils.

The field scale experiment was performed to examine the effect of plant coverage on the constructed wetland performance and recommend the optimum development and management of macrophyte communities. Four sets (each set of 0.88 ha) of wetland (0.8 ha) and pond (0.08 ha) systems were used. Water flowing into the Seokmoon estuarine reservoir from the Dangjin stream was pumped into wetland system. Water depth was maintained at 0.3 ${\sim}$ 0.5 m and hydraulic retention time was managed to about 2 ${\sim}$ 5 days; emergent plants were allowed to grow in the wetlands. After three growing seasons of the construction of wetlands, plant coverage was about 90%, even with no plantation, from bare soil surfaces at the initial stage. During the start up period of constructed wetlands, lower water levels should be maintained to avoid flooding newly plants, if wetland plants are to be started from germinating seeds. Effluent T-N concentration in low plant coverage wetland was higher in winter than high plant coverage wetland, whereas no T-P effluent concentration and removal efficiency difference was observed within 15% plant coverage. Dead vegetation affected nitrogen removal during winter because it is a source of organic carbon which is an essential parameter in denitrification. Biomass harvesting is not a realistic management option for most constructed wetland systems because it could only slightly increase the removal rate and provide a minor nitrogen removal pathway due to lack of organic carbon.
Air pollution associated with the $NO_x$ emission from the ship engines is becoming one of the major environmental concerns these days. As the regulations on ship pollutants are strengthened, the wet absorption method, for controlling complex pollutants in a confined space, has the advantage of simultaneously removing various pollutants, but the low solubility of nitrogen monoxide is drawback. In this study, for improving existing denitrification scrubber system, NO oxidation process by hydroxyl radical produced from irradiating UV light on $H_2O_2$ is suggested and the $H_2O_2$ decomposition rates and hydroxyl radical quantum yields were measured to find the optimum condition of $H_2O_2$ photolysis reaction. As a result, the optimum quantum yield and photolysis rate of $H_2O_2$ were 0.8798, $0.6mol\;h^{-1}$ at 8 W, 2 M condition, and oxidation efficiency of 1000 ppm NO gas was 40%. In batch system, NO removal efficiency has a range of 65.0 ~ 67.3% according to input gas concentration of 100 ~ 1500 ppm. This results indicate that the scrubber system using hydrogen peroxide photolysis can be applied as air pollution prevention facility of ship engines.
This study was attempted to investigate variation of the bacterial flora in waste water treatment of fish meat paste plant by batch and continuous culture. The results of the experiment are as follows : 1. The removal rate of BOD in waste water treatment by activated sludge of continuous culture was above $90\%$. 2. In the process of nitric acidification of protein waste water, $NH_4-N\;and\;NO_2-N$ increased untill the lapse of 48 hours from culture, but $NO_3-N$ showed little change. 3. In activated sludge obtained from acclimation by batch culture for 10 days, bacteria good in capacity of nitric acidification were not appeared. 4. Among 120 strains of isolated bacteria, the most predominantly appeared bacterial flora were Enterobacteriaceae ($28\%$) and Pseudomonas spp. ($25\%$), In the latter term of aeration during which ammonia originates in abundance, Pseudomonas spp. was decreased but Enterobarteriaceae was increased. 5. Fifty percent of the isolated strains were able to grow in $0\%,\;3\%$ NaCl and $75\%$ artificial sea water, Therefore, it is suggested that sea water can be used as dilution water instead of tap water during the treatment of waste water.
The effect of easily decomposable organic carbon (methanol) application on the behavior of nitrogen derived from surface-applied urea in submerged soil was investigated. Two rates of urea (150 & $300kg-N\;ha^{-1}$) and three levels of methanol (2, 4, 8 ml) were applied to 10 g soil samples. The samples were incubated for 30 days under submerged conditions. The flood water and the soil were sampled for analysis of urea-N, $NH_4-N$ and $NO_3-N$ every 10 days. Urea-N in flood water and in soil at the rate of $150kg-N\;ha^{-1}$ and that in flood water at the rate of $300kg-N\;ha^{-1}$ were not detected but the urea-N concentration in soil at the rate of $300kg-N\;ha^{-1}$ with 8 ml methanol treatment was 4.7 on the 10th day from incubation. $NH_4-N$ concentrations in flood water and in soil increased with increasing urea application rates whereas they decreased with increasing methanol treatment. $NO_3-N$ concentration in flood water and in soil were similar regardless of the urea and methanol application rates. The total amount of $NH_4-N$ in flood water and in soil decreased with increasing methanol treatment, 0 ml & 2 ml, whereas the total amounts of $NO_3-N$ in both flood water and soil increased slightly at higher rates of methanol treatment, 4 ml & 8 ml. The total amount of $NH_4-N$ in both flood water and soil increased up to 20 days of incubation whereas that of $NO_3-N$ in flood water and in soil decreased over incubation time.
Responses of real-time control parameters, such as ORP, DO and pH, to the conditions of biological animal wastewater treatment process were examined to evaluate the stability of real-time control using each parameter. Also an optimum index for supplemental carbon source addition based on NOx-N level was determined under a consideration of denitrification rate by endogenous respiration of microorganism and residual organic matter in liquor. Experiment was performed with lab-scale sequencing batch reactor(SBR) and working volume of the process was 45L. The distinctive nitrogen break point(NBP) on ORP-and DO-time profiles, which mean the termination of nitrification, started disappearing with the maintenance of low NH4-N loading rate. Also the NBP on ORP-and DO-time profiles was no longer observed when high NOx-N was loaded into the reactor, and the sensitivity of ORP became dull with the increase of NOx-N level. However, the distinctive NBP was constantly occurred on pH(mV)-time profile, maintaining unique profile patterns. This stable occurrence of NBP on pH(mV)-time profile was lasted even at very high NOx-N:NH4-N ratio(over 80:1) in reactor, and the specific point could be easily detected by tracking moving slope change(MSC) of the curve. Revelation of NBP on pH(mV)-time profile and recognition of the realtime control point using MSC were stable at a condition of over 300mg/L NOx-N level in reactor. The occurrence of distinctive NBP was persistent on pH(mV)-time profile even at a level of 10,000mg/L STOC(soluble total organic carbon) and the recognition of NBP was feasible by tracing MSC, but that point on ORP and DO-time profiles began to disappear with the increase of STOC level in reactor. The denitrfication rate by endogenous respiration and residual organic matter was about 0.4mg/L.hr., and it was found that 0.83 would be accepted as an index for supplemental carbon source addition when 0.1 of safety factor was applied.

The objectives were to compare the biodegradable threshold concentrations of phenol with the different composition of the influent carbon source and examine the SMA (Specific Methanogenic Activity)and the possibility of simultaneous removal of high-strength organics and nitrogen compounds in UASB(Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket) - PBR(Packed Bed Reactor) process. The results showed that UASB reactors were efficient to remove phenol and phenol + glucose from synthetic wastewater. At phenol conc, of 600 mg/L and SCOD conc. of 2100 mg/L in UASB reactor(with only phenol as substrate), the removal efficiencies of phenol and SCOD were over 99% and 93% respectively, under MLVSS of 20 g. The activity of microorganism was $0.112g\;phenol/g\;VSS{\cdot}d$, $0.351g\;SCOD/g\;VSS{\cdot}d$. The gas production rate was $0.115L/g\;VSS{\cdot}d$ and $CH_4$ content in gas was about 70%. At phenol conc. of 760 mg/L and SCOD conc. of 4300 mg/L in UASB reactor( with phenol + glucose as substrates), the removal efficiencies of phenol and of SCOD were over 99% and 90% respectively, under MLVSS of 20 g. The activity of microoganism was $0.135g\;phenol/g\;VSS{\cdot}d$, $0.696g\;SCOD/g\;VSS{\cdot}d$. The gas production rate was $0.257L/g\;VSS{\cdot}d$ and $CH_4$ content in gas was about 70%. Serum bottle test showed that the activity of granule was inhibited over 1600 mg/L phenol conc, and denitrification and methanogenesis simultaneously took place in UASB granules under co-substrates conditions. PBR reactor packed with cilium type media, was efficient in nitrification. In condition of $0.038kg\;NH_4-N/m^3-media{\cdot}d$. 10~12 mg/L phenol conc. and 200~500 mg/L SCOD conc., nitrification efficiency was over 90% and phenol removal efficiency was over 98%.
The experimental study was made to propose the treatment method of wastewater in the high-density fish culture system. The BOD to COD ratios of effluents were almost same to 0.65 in the eel-farm, but were various in the farm rearing together with tilapia etc. A BOD rate curve of the eel-farm effluent could be described mathematically by the equation, $BODu=14.1(1-10^{-0.222t})+30.9(1-10^{-0.035(t-8)})$. Nitrification in Biological Fluidized Bed(BFB) system to treat the fish-farm wastewater could be reduce ammonium level up to $65{\sim}79\%$ when ammonium loading rates were between 0.014 and 0.075g $NH_4/g$ BVS-day. Nitrification efficiency was decreased by organic matters in the wastewater when ammonium loading was low(0.014 g $NH_4/g$ BVS-day). T-N removal ratios were decreased to increase loading in denitrification process, because of low C/N ratio. Based on much higher biological mass concentrations, BFB system takes many advantages of a practical viewpoint, such as stability of treatment efficiency and reduction of necessary site area for the facility, as compared with conventional treatment systems.

Nanoscale zero-valent iron(nZVI) is famous for its high reactivity originated from its high surface area and it has received considerable attentions as one of the latest innovative technologies for treating contaminated groundwater. Due to its fine powdery form, nZVI has limited filed applications. The efforts to overcome this shortcoming by immobilizing nZVI on a supporting material have been made. This study investigated the differences of resin-supported nZVI's characteristics by changing the preparation methods and evaluated its reactivity. The borohydride reduction of an iron salt was proceeded in ethanol/water solvent containing a dispersant and the synthesis was conducted in the presence of ion-exchange resin. The resulting material was compared to that prepared in a conventional way of using de-ionized water by measuring the phyrical and chemical characteristics. BET surface area and Fe content of nZVI-attached resin was increased from $31.63m^2/g$ and 18.19 mg Fe/g to $38.10m^2/g$ and 22.44 mg Fe/g, respectively, by switching the solution medium from water to ethanol/water with a dispersant. The reactivity of each material was tested using nitrate solution without pH control. The pseudo first-order constant of $0.462h^{-1}$ suggested the reactivity of resin-supported nZVI prepared in ethanol/water was increased 61 % compared to that of the conventional type of supported nZVI. The specific reaction rate constant based on surface area was also increased. The results suggest that this new supported nZVI can be used successfully in on-site remediation for contaminated groundwater.
