  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic relapsing disorder of unknown etiology, which is believed to be multifactorial. Recently, the incidence of pediatric IBD has steeply increased in Korea since 2000. Poorly controlled disease activity can result in complications such as intestinal fistulae, abscess, and stricture, as well as growth retardation and delayed puberty in children. Because of a lack of confirmative tests, various diagnostic modalities must be used to diagnose IBD. Onset age, location, behavior, and activity are important in selecting treatments. Monogenic IBD must be excluded among infantile and refractory very-early-onset IBD. Early aggressive therapy using biologics has recently been proposed for peripubertal children to prevent growth failure and malnutrition.

  • The bacterial strain which utilizes phenol and degrade TCE was isolated from an industrial waste site. The bacterial strain was named as T5-7 and identified as an Acinetobacter species. After phenol-induction, the strain T5-7 removed TCE efficiently without cell growth. So, it seems that TCE degradation was not related to cell growth. TCE degradation increased when initial cell concentrations of phenol-grown T5-7 were high. In the presence of phenol, initial degradation of TCE was delayed but total amount of degradation was not affected at final stage. The strain cultured in 0.1% yeast extract did not degrade TCE, which indicates that phenol induction was essential to the TCE degradation.

  • The effects of pre-indentation technique are presented for A12024-T3 Alclad alloy using as skin material for aircraft fuselage and wing. Indentations were applied to specimens to be placed on the presumed path of fatigue crack growth before fatigue tests. Tension-tension fatigue tests were conducted on the edge cracked specimens in the L-T orientation. Test results were analyzed to investigate the effectiveness of pre-indentation with the variation of specimen's thickness, position of indentation and applied maximum stress. Fatigue crack retardation by pre-indentation is well recognized in the various conditions.

  • The electric furnace, inside which the desired temperature is kept by the generated heat, is known to be a difficult system to control and model exactly because system parameters and response delayed time are varied as the temperature and positions are changed. In this study, the GPCEW (generalized predictive control with exponential weight), which always guarantees the stability of the closed loop system and can be effectively applied to the internally unstable system, was introduced to the ceramic drying electric furnace and was verified by showing its temperature tracking performance experimentally.

  • As is the case in Korea, the expansion of renewable energy dissemination is an essential matter in Ukraine when considering its energy consumption and dependence on energy import. While Korea has set about promoting the new and renewable energy industry on the back of the national policy on green growth, Ukraine expects a virtuous circle of renewable energy industry with green tariffs and the attraction of foreign capital in association with carbon emission trade. Utilizing its well-developed heavy industrial sector including the shipbuilding and automobile industries, Korea expects wind turbine manufacturing to become one of its next-generation growth engines. Ukraine is also trying to enter the wind turbine system or parts manufacturing industry based on its automobile industry and advanced aerospace technology. Although the Crimean region in Ukraine seems to have excellent wind resources, and thus shows great potential as a location for wind farm development, political instability has been a major obstacle to the attraction of foreign capital, leading to delayed investment.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate effects of soil moisture content on the growth of tobacco plant at early stage after transplanting. Soil moisture was controlled to be 30%, 45%, 60%, 75% and 90% of the maximum water holding capacity (38.7%), and treated for 10, 20 and 30 days. Budding flowering and topping were delayed in the 30% and 45% treatment where soil moisture was deficient. Plant height, number of leaves, and length and width of the largest leaf were the best in the 75% treatment for 10 days, and development of the root and top was the best also in the same treatment. As the duration of low soil moisture treatment prolonged, intercellular space , became small. Nitrogen and potassium of the cured leaf showed the highest value in 30% and 45% treatments. Nicotine content of the cured leaf was high in the 90% treatment, and reducing sugar content of that was high in the 75% treatment for 10 days.

  • The experiment was conducted to elucidate the optimum planting data and fertilization level of Aruncus dioicus var. kamtscacus HARA. Plant height was increased as the seeding date was delayed. There was no transparent difference on plant height indifferent fertilization level. Nuber of stems was remarkably increased in the fertilization 14-14-12kg. Fresh leaf yield in the fertilization of 24-18-15kg was incresed about 31% comparing in the fertilization of 14-14-12kg. As a result, the optimum planing date and fertilization level was Jan. 15 and 24-18-15kg per 10a, respectively.

  • This study has been performed to confirm the three dimensional effect of the crack reduction and the restrained effect of crack growth for the synthetic fiber reinforced soil. Two types of polyrpropylene fiber and low plastic clay(CL) were used for the test. And the test variable were fiber length and so on. The results of the study were summarized as follows ; 1) The mixing of synthetic fiber was effective in reducing crack growth due to adhesion between soil partlcles and synthetic fiber.l Especially initlal crack was delayed, as compared with the pure soil, for about 1 day in case of mono filament synthetic fiber and for about 1 or 2 days in case of fibrillated syntetic fiber. 2) As the content and length of synthetic fiber were increased , the effect of crack reduction was increased. It was found that 0.5% fibrillated synthetic fiber with 40mm length reinforced soil had about 3 times more effective than natural soils. 3) In case of the same fiber content and fiber length, the fibrillated synthetic fiber has nmore effective than the mono filament synthetic fiber for crack reduction.

  • The velvet regulators VosA and VelB are primarily involved in spore maturation and dormancy. Previous studies found that the VosA-VelB hetero-complex coordinates certain target genes that are related to fungal differentiation and conidial maturation in Aspergillus nidulans. Here, we characterized the VosA/VelB-inhibited developmental gene vidD in A. nidulans. Phenotypic analyses demonstrated that the vidD deleted mutant exhibited defect fungal growth, a reduced number of conidia, and delayed formation of sexual fruiting bodies. The deletion of vidD decreased the amount of conidial trehalose, increased the sensitivity against heat stress, and reduced the conidial viability. Moreover, the absence of vidD resulted in increased production of sterigmatocystin. Together, these results show that VidD is required for proper fungal growth, development, and sterigmatocystin production in A. nidulans.

  • Heloniopsis orientalis (Liliaceae) is an important horticultural crop native to Korea. Under natural conditions, germination is poor and plant growth is delayed. Therefore, we have developed a vegetative propagation method to produce plants with vigorous growth characteristics via tissue culture. The regenerated shoots were then initiated directly from leaf explants on an MS medium containing either 0.5 to 2.0 mg/L 2,4-D or 1.0 to 3.0 mg/L BA. Healthy plantlets with adventitious roots were formed on the medium supplemented with 1.0 mg/L BA (81%). BA triggered callus initiation without caulogenesis or rhizogenesis, and callus formation was better on the half-strength MS medium than on the full-strength medium. This in vitro propagation protocol will be useful for conservation, as well as for mass propagation.
