The PdO nanoparticle with large surface area was selected to solve the environmental pollution problem at fire range caused by high energy explosives research department explosive (RDX) and high melting explosive (HMX). By simulating water pollution, RDX and HMX nitramine explosives were dissolved in water, followed by the degradation reaction at 313 K by adding PdO. In order to measure the degradation reaction rate of explosives, 1H NMR was used, which can monitor the reaction rate without losing sample during reaction, and observe the progress of the reaction through the spectrum. The results showed that the degradation of RDX and HMX by PdO nanoparticles are pseudo-first order reaction. The degradation of explosives compounds were observed via the chemical shift and peak intensity analysis of NMR peaks. The measured rate constants for these reactions of RDX and HMX were 2.10 × 10-2 and 6.35 × 10-4 h-1, respectively. This study showed that the application of PdO nanoparticles for explosives degradation is a feasible option.
In order to improve the thermal stability of wood plastic composites (WPC), thermal degradation behavior of WPC in this study was investigated by the addition of wood flour and fire retardant after hybridization of wood flour and ammonium polyphosphate (APP) into polypropylene (PP) matrix. Thermal degradation behavior of all formulations was analyzed with thermogravimetric analyzer under nitrogen environment at heating rate of $10^{\circ}C/min$. As the thermal degradation temperature of wood flour is lower than that of PP, char layer formed by the wood flour decreases the speed of heat transfer to PP. In addition, the char layer increases the 2nd thermal degradation temperature and decreases the 2nd thermal degradation speed. The WPC treated with APP increases the 1st and 2nd degradation temperatures. In the case of WPC with high loading level of wood flour, the 1st thermal degradation temperature and 2nd thermal degradation rate were increased by the addition of APP, and then the amount of remnants at high temperature was increased by the increase of the APP loading level. In the case of WPC treated with APP, the amount of the remnants at high temperature was increased with the increase of wood flour content from 10 wt% to 50 wt%, indicating that char formation of the APP and wood flour occurred at the same time, resulting in high thermal stability effect by the increase of wood flour content.
This study investigated the application of experimental design methodology to optimization of conditions of air-plasma and oxygen-plasma oxidation of N, N-Dimethyl-4-nitrosoaniline (RNO). The reactions of RNO degradation were described as a function of the parameters of voltage ($X_1$), gas flow rate ($X_2$) and initial RNO concentration ($X_3$) and modeled by the use of the central composite design. In pre-test, RNO degradation of the oxygen-plasma was higher than that of the air-plasma though low voltage and gas flow rate. The application of response surface methodology (RSM) yielded the following regression equation, which is an empirical relationship between the RNO removal efficiency and test variables in a coded unit: RNO removal efficiency (%) = $86.06\;+\;5.00X_1\;+\;14.19X_2\;-\;8.08X_3\;+\;3.63X_1X_2\;-\;7.66X_2^2$ (air-plasma); RNO removal efficiency (%) = $88.06\;+\;4.18X_1\;+\;2.25X_2\;-\;4.91X_3\;+\;2.35X_1X_3\;+\;2.66X_1^2\;+\;1.72X_3^2$ (oxygen-plasma). In analysis of the main effect, air flow rate and initial RNO concentration were most important factor on RNO degradation in air-plasma and oxygen-plasma, respectively. Optimized conditions under specified range were obtained for the highest desirability at voltage 152.37 V, 135.49 V voltage and 5.79 L/min, 2.82 L/min gas flow rate and 25.65 mg/L, 34.94 mg/L initial RNO concentration for air-plasma and oxygen-plasma, respectively.
This study was carried out to investigate the characterization of aerogel made by holocellulose, the thermal properties of the aerogel, and its shapes and porous structures. The aerogel was made by holocellulose through the gelation in alkali hydroxide-urea solution and freeze drying processes. Holocellulose aerogel had porous structure such as net or sponge. The density of holocellulose aerogel was 0.04 g/$cm^3$, and the specific surface area 145.3 $m^2$/g. Although thermal degradation occurred in the range of $210{\sim}350^{\circ}C$, significant thermal degradation occurred at low temperature with low heating rate, Micropore volume was sharply increased with low heating rate. Holocellulose aerogel char obtained by carbonization with $900^{\circ}C$ and $0.5^{\circ}C$/min. heating rate had the highest surface area, 656.7 $m^2$/g. The deformed and irregular structures of holocellulose aerogel chars due to the thermal degradation were observed in SEM.

In this paper, the degradation evaluation method of VLC (Visible Light Communication) wireless module after high dose rate gamma-ray irradiation using the thermal infrared camera is proposed. First, the heating characteristics of the active devices embedded in the VLC wireless module during the condition of normal operation is monitored by thermal infrared camera. By the image processing technique, the trends of the intensity of the heat emitted by the active devices are calculated and stored. The feature of the blob area including the area of the active devices in the thermal infrared image is extracted and stored. The feature used in this paper is the mean value of the gray levels in the blob area. The same VLC module has been gamma irradiated at the dose rate of about 4.0 kGy/h during 72 hours up to a total dose of 288 kGy. And then, the heating characteristics of the active devices embedded in the VLC wireless module after high dose gamma ray irradiation is observed by thermal infrared camera. The high dose gamma-ray induced degradation of the active devices embedded in the VLC module was evaluated by comparing the mean value of the blob area to the one of the same blob area of the VLC module before the gamma ray irradiation.
In this study, the reductive dechlorination of triclosan using zero-valent iron (ZVI, $Fe^0$) and modified zero-valent iron (i.e., acid-washed iron (Aw/Fe) and palladium-coated iron (Pd/Fe)) was experimentally investigated, and the reduction characteristics were evaluated by analyzing the reaction kinetics. Triclosan could be reductively decomposed using zero-valent iron. The degradation rates of triclosan were about 50% and 67% when $Fe^0$ and Aw/Fe were used as reductants, respectively, after 8 h of reaction. For the Pd/Fe system, the degradation rate was about 57% after 1 h of reaction. Thus, Pd/Fe exhibited remarkable performance in the reductive degradation of triclosan. Several dechlorinated intermediates were predicted by GC-MS spectrum, and 2-phenoxyphenol was detected as the by-product of the decomposition reaction of triclosan, indicating that reductive dechlorination occurred continuously. As the reaction proceeded, the pH of the solution increased steadily; the pH increase for the Pd/Fe system was smaller than that for the $Fe^0$ and Aw/Fe system. Further, zero-order, first-order, and second-order kinetic models were used to analyze the reaction kinetics. The first-order kinetic model was found to be the best with good correlation for the $Fe^0$ and Aw/Fe system. However, for the Pd/Fe system, the experimental data were evaluated to be well fitted to the second-order kinetic model. The reaction rate constants (k) were in the order of Pd/Fe > Aw/Fe > $Fe^0$, with the rate constant of Pd/Fe being much higher than that of the other two reductants.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Aspergillus oryzae fermentation extract (AFE) on in situ degradation of the various concentrates, forages and by-products in Taiwan. The in situ trial was conducted to determine the effect of AFE on the rate of ruminal degradation of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and acid detergent fiber (ADF) of the various local available feedstuff commonly used for dairy cattle. Two ruminal fistulated cows were arranged into a two by two switchback trial. Two dietary treatments were control without AFE inclusion diet and diet with 3 g of AFE (Amaferm) added daily into the total mixed ration (TMR). Results showed that effect of AFE inclusion on the ruminal degradability of concentrates vary; soybean meal is the most responsive feedstuff, corn is the next, whereas full-fat soybean did not response the AFE inclusion at all. The inclusion of AFE significantly depressed most of the nutrient degradation of the concentrates of soybean meal in the first 12-hour in situ incubation. The effect declined in the next 12 hours. Rapeseed meal showed a different trend of response: addition of AFE improved its NDF degradation. The inclusions of AFE significantly improved ADF degradation of roughage after 24 or 48 hours of incubation. However, corn silage and peanut-vines showed a different trend. Effects of AFE inclusion on the by-products degradability were inconsistent. Most of nutrients in rice distillers grain and some in beancurd pomace did show increased degradation by the AFE inclusion.

Pseudomanas sp. EL-04J was previously isolated from phenol-acclimated activated sludge. This bacterium was capable of degrading phenol and cometabolizing trichloroethylene (TCE). After precultivation in the mineral salts medium containing phenol as a sole carbon source, Pseudomonas EL-04J degraded 90% of TCE $25 \mu\textrm{M}$ within 20 hours. Thus, phenol-induced Pseudomonas sp. EL-04J cells can bdegrade TCE. Followsing a transient lag period, Pseudomonas sp. EL-04J cells degraded TCE at concentrations of at least $250 \mu\textrm{M}$ with no apparent retardation in rate, but the transformance capacity of such cells was limited and depended on the cell concentration. The degradation rate of TCE followed the Michaelis-Menten kinetic model. The maximum degradation ratio ($V_{max}$) and saturation constant ($K_{m}$) were $7nmo {\ell}/min{\cdot}mg$ cell protein and $11 \mu\textrm{M}$, respectively. Cometabolism of TCE by phenol fed experiment was evaluated in $50m {\ell}$ serum vial that contained $10m {\ell}$ of meneral sals medium supplemented with $10 \mu\textrm{M}$ TCE degradation was inhibited in the initial period of 1 mM phenol addition, but after that time Pseudomonas sp. EL-04J cells degraded TCE and showed cell growth.
Bacterial strains which degrade Arabian Light crude oil were isolated by enrichment culture from oil-spilled soil. The strain A54 was finally selected after testing emulsifying activity and oil conversion rate. Strain A54 was identified as a Acinetobacter sp. based on the morphological, biochemical and physiological characteristics. It appears to be highly specialized for growth on Arabian Light crude oil in minimal salts medium since it showed preference for oil or degradation products as substrates for growth. It was found that it could grow on at least fifteen different hydrocarbons. The optimum cultural and environmental conditions were as follows; 25$\circ$C for temperature, 7,5 for pH, 2.0% for NaCl concentration and 2.0% for crude oil concentration. Additionally, the optimal concentration of NH$_{4}$NO$_{3}$, and K$_{2}$HPO$_{4}$, were 12.5 mM and 0.057 mM, respectively. Cell growth and emulsifying activity as a function of time were also determined. Crude oil degradation and the reduction of product peaks were identified by the analysis of remnant oil by gas chromatography. Approximately 63% of crude oil were converted into a form no longer extractable by mixed organic solvents.
The rumen degradability of rice straw (untreated, urea-sprayed, urea-treated), grasses (Panicum maximum, Pennisetum clandestinum) and rice bran was compared. The mean in vivo organic matter digestibility of the untreated (US), urea-supplemented (SS) and urea-ammonia treated (TS) rice straw were 50.9, 53.9 and 57.4%, respectively. Rice bran contained extremely high levels of acid-insoluble ash (25.2% DM), and its OMD was 36.1%. Grasses had OMD values around 66%. Degradability measurements were performed with buffaloes using the nylon bag technique. The organic matter (OM) disappearance data were fitted to an model which was used to describe degradation pattern. The mean potentially degradable fraction for US, SS and TS was 61.5, 61.9 and 69.4%, respectively. Urea-ammonia treatment increased both the amount of OM degraded and the rate at which it was degraded in the rumen. Both grasses had similar values for degradable fraction (around 65%) and for rate constant for degradation (0.04). Rice bran contained high proportions of readily soluble material (23.9%), but the degradable OM fraction was only 13.2%. The low quality of rice bran is attributed to the contamination of rice hulls during processing.
