  • Purpose: To investigate the relationship between classification based on simple radiographic findings and arthroscopic findings of the cartilage lesions in medial degenerative arthritis of the ankle joint. Materials and Methods: We studied 41 ankles of 36 patients with asymmetrical narrowing of the medial joint space. Degenerative arthritis following fracture and those with generalized arthritic disease were excluded, but those with a history of ankle sprain were included. Standing radiographs of all patients were graded according to the Takakura classification and the Kellgren-Lawrence (K/L) classification. Arthroscopic findings were classified according to the depth, width, and anteroposterior dimension of articular cartilage damage. Results: According to the Takakura classification, 29 ankles were classified as stage II, 7 cases as stage IIIA and 2 cases as stage IIIB. According to our classification of arthroscopic findings of 29 ankles in stage II, 1 ankle was graded as Grade I, 3 ankles as grade II, 10 ankles as grade III, and 15 ankles as grade IV. Spearman correlation coefficient between Takakura classification and arthroscopic classification was 0.342 (P=0.028), and coefficient between K/L classification and arthroscopic classification was 0.480 (P=0.001). Conclusion: Degenerative changes of the articular cartilage are more advanced than radiographic findings in many patients with ankle degenerative arthritis with asymmetrical narrowing of medial joint space. Therefore, we conclude that more aggressive effort should be made for correct diagnosis and treatment of degenerative arthritis.

  • Objectives : This study was performed to investigate the efficacy and safety of the Mulberry Extract Complex in a placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial and animal study on degenerative arthritis. Methods : Animal study: Mulberry Extract Complex is composed of extracts of mulberry (Morus alba L.) fruit, mulberry leaves and black beans (Glycine max (L.) Merr.). To evaluate the serum level of interleukin-2, interferon-$\gamma$, and prostaglandin E2, an animal model of degenerative arthritis induced by monosodium iodoacetate was employed. Clinical study: The efficacy index (VAS, K-WOMAC) was compared among patients with symptoms of degenerative arthritis before and after Mulberry Extract Complex ingestion as well as the one in groups. Evaluations of the improvement by the subjects and by doctor assessment were also performed. Results : Animal study: Mulberry Extract Complex reduced the serum level of interferon-$\gamma$ and prostaglandin E2 in an animal model with degenerative arthritis. Clinical study: The VAS change showed statistical significance in the experimental groups after 4 weeks (PP set) and 8 weeks (ITT set) of ingestion. When the K-WOMAC was analyzed using a modified ITT set to determine the effectiveness, statistically significant results were obtained in the fields of pain & symptom within the Mulberry Extract Complex group as well as between the Mulberry Extract Complex and placebo groups after 8 weeks of ingestion. Results from the improvement evaluation by subjects and the assessment of improvement by doctors showed statistical significance in the experimental groups (PP set) after 8 weeks. Conclusions : Mulberry Extract Complex could be useful for the improvement of various symptoms of degenerative arthritis based on its anti-inflammatory activity and its reduction of VAS and K-WOMAC pain scores.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of kinesio taping in patients with degenerative arthritis. 40 female patients with degenerative arthritis were voluntarily recruited and randomly divided into experimental and control group. Experimental group(mean age was 73.4 years, height was 153.5cm, and weight was 59.9kg) was applied patellar inferior and medial gliding, quadriceps, tibial external rotation, gastrocnemius, and soleus using a kinesio tape. And control group(mean age was 72.7 years, height was 154cm, and weight was 58.6kg) was received a interferential current therapy(ENDOMED 582, Enraf-Nonius, Holland). And we received a consent form from all subjects. Measuring was conducted by using a 3-dimensional gait analysis system for measuring of stride length, cadence, and velocity. The results were as follow: Stride length was significantly increased after than before treatment(p<.05). Cadence was significantly increased after than before treatment(p<.05). And Velocity was significantly increased after than before treatment(p<.05). Cadence was a significant difference between experimental and control group(p<.05), but there was no significant difference stride length and velocity between two groups. So we suggest that kinesio taping has a effectiveness in patients with degenerative arthritis.

  • Degenerative arthritis is characterized by progressive degenerative change, particularly change occurring to the joint due to the burden of body weight. Arthritis means inflammation occurring to the joint: it causes pain and limits exercise involving movement of the joint. Edema is not a disease but a condition which is accompanied by progression of a certain disease. Degenerative arthritis patients also have various diseases and mostly brings edema. Even though the cause is known to be abrasion of the joints, there are many cases in which walking difficulties are caused by pressure and pain due to edema. We found patients with walking difficulties caused by pain and increase of pressure in the joints walk better after treatment of both the pain and edema.

  • Degenerative arthritis is a common joint disease that affects many elderly people and is typically diagnosed through radiography. However, the need for remote diagnosis is increasing because knee pain and walking disorders caused by degenerative arthritis make face-to-face treatment difficult. This study collects three-dimensional joint coordinates in real time using Azure Kinect DK and calculates 6 gait features through visualization and one-way ANOVA verification. The random forest classifier, trained with these characteristics, classified degenerative arthritis with an accuracy of 97.52%, and the model's basis for classification was identified through classification algorithm by features. Overall, this study not only compensated for the shortcomings of existing diagnostic methods, but also constructed a high-accuracy prediction model using statistically verified gait features and provided detailed prediction results.

  • Purpose: To identify the effect of knee joint traction therapy on pain, physical function, and depression in patients with degenerative arthritis. Methods: In total, 30 patients with degenerative arthritis were randomly assigned to one of two groups: the experimental group, who underwent knee joint traction therapy, and the control group, who underwent general physical therapy (15 patients per group). Pain was measured using the visual analogue scale (VAS), physical function was measured using the Western ontario and McMaster universities osteoarthritis (WOMAC) index, and depression was measured using the Beck depression inventory (BDI). The VAS, WOMAC score, and BDI score were recorded before and after the 4-week treatment. Results: As a result of comparison within groups, the experimental and control group showed significant difference for VAS, WOMAC and BDI after the experiment (p<0.05). In comparison between the two groups, the experimental group in which knee joint traction was applied showed more significant change in VAS, WOMAC and BDI than the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: This study showed that knee joint traction therapy was effective in improving pain, physical function, and depression in patients with degenerative arthritis.
