  • Deflections of Reinforced concrete structures must satisfy the permissible values and it is hard to predict the due to uncertainty of deflection of the reinforced concrete structures. Thus, many researchers have suggested a number of experimental equation of deflection against the uncertainty. In a specification, a procedure to evaluate flexure deflection using effective moment of inertia and moment-curvature relation is suggested. ACI offers a method using effective moment of inertia, which has been developed by Branson. Eurocode 2(EC2) suggests a procedure to evaluate deflection of reinforced concrete structure using moment-curvature relation. In this paper, a series of experiments were conducted on the singly reinforced concrete beams which have the same reinforcement ratio and different concrete strength. Therefore, the effect of the concrete strength on the deflection of the beams was analysed. The deflections obtained from the experiment were compared with the deflections calculated with ACI code and EC2.

  • This study discusses the issues related to the accuracy of deflection measurement and unstable energy in the testing of FRC. Some deflection methods may include large extraneous deformations. A faulty load-deflection curve will be obtained if an unstable deflection measuring system is used, and inaccurate toughness evaluation can result from this faulty curve. Some load-deflection curve of FRC may be attributed to unstable region of the load-deflection curve. If the unstable region is not correctly evaluated toughness indices from the curve would inappropriately represent true indices. In this paper, the discussion will focus on the effects of the deflection measuring system both on the measurement of the load-deflection response of FRC and the evaluation of FRC toughness and the effects of the unstable region and the management method of unstable region on toughness evaluation of FRC. It is observed that ASTM toughness indices which is based on measured deflection at first cracking is influenced significantly by extraneous deformation of deflection measurement. Extraneous deformation in deflection measurement, however result in negligible errors in toughness evaluation if JSCE and JCI definitions are used.

  • In this paper, dynamic stress, strain and deflection analysis of concrete pipes conveying nanoparticles-water under the seismic load are studied. The pipe is buried in the soil which is modeled by spring and damper elements. The Navier-Stokes equation is used for obtaining the force induced by the fluid and the mixture rule is utilized for considering the effect of nanoparticles. Based on refined two variables shear deformation theory of shells, the pipe is simulated and the equations of motion are derived based on energy method. The Galerkin and Newmark methods are utilized for calculating the dynamic stress, strain and deflection of the concrete pipe. The influences of internal fluid, nanoparticles volume percent, soil medium and damping of it as well as length to diameter ratio of the pipe are shown on the dynamic stress, strain and displacement of the pipe. The results show that with enhancing the nanoparticles volume percent, the dynamic stress, strain and deflection decrease.

  • In order to manage the deflection of a curved PCT girder bridge during construction, a GPS receiver was installed at the spot predicted to be the weak point during the incremental launching so as to measure the deflection at each construction stage. The deflections obtained in the experiment were compared with those derived from the monitoring of stress, temperature and inclination. The comparative analysis of the GPS measurement and analytical values obtained from finite element modeling with respect to the launching distance showed that the measured values differ by 0.6 to 1.6 times to the analytical results. This difference could be significantly reduced by thermal calibration. From the analysis of the behavioral pattern of the bridge, deflection occurred during construction in the concrete tip due to the deflection at the head of the nose at the 95m and 75m-spots, and compression and tension developed respectively at the compression weak zone and tension weak zone. The application of GPS appeared to enable more efficient management of the deflection during the erection of the curved PCT girder bridge and is expected to be helpful for the prediction and management of the behavior in future ILM construction sites.

  • In this research, moisture contents and roof deflection of two test-bed Korean traditional timber houses, Hanoks, were monitored. The monitored houses are consisted of two types of Hanoks. One is a one-story traditional Hanok built by traditional construction method, and the other is a two-storied new-styled Hanok built by modernized construction method. The monitoring has been carried out for about thirty months. The moisture contents and roof deflections were analyzed and compared. The moisture contents of the traditional Hanok built by raw wood were somewhat higher than that of the new-styled Hanok built by glued structural wood. The mean vertical deflection of angle rafters of traditional Hanok is about twice more than that of the new-styled Hanok.

  • The span deflection among the monitoring items of bridge measurement system in real time is representative behaviour and important index of superstructure condition. the limit of span deflection in Standard Specifications for Highway Bridge in Korea has been applied to the method that is making the management-criteria for span deflection in bridge measurement system. But the limit concern mainly serviceability of divers. So it is difficult to find the safety factor of the limit from the viewpoint of bridge safety. This study estimated the safety factor of the limit of span-deflection in Standard Specifications for Highway Bridge in Korea from the viewpoint of bridge safety by the indoor structural test.

  • The second order analysis taking place due to non-linear behavior of the structures under the mechanical and geometric factors through implementing exact and approximate methods is an indispensible issue in the analysis of such structures. Among the exact methods is the slope-deflection method that due to its simplicity and efficiency of its relationships has always been in consideration. By solving the differential equations of the modified slope-deflection method in which the effect of axial compressive force is considered, the stiffness matrix including trigonometric entries would be obtained. The complexity of computations with trigonometric functions causes replacement with their Maclaurin expansion. In most cases only the first two terms of this expansion are used but to obtain more accurate results, more elements are needed. In this paper, the effect of utilizing higher order terms of Maclaurin expansion on reducing the number of required elements and attaining more rapid convergence with less error is investigated for the Bernoulli beam with various boundary conditions. The results indicate that when using only one element along the beam length, utilizing higher order terms in Maclaurin expansion would reduce the relative error in determining the critical buckling load and kinematic parameters in the second order analysis.

  • Jacking force loss management inside the PSC Box girder of a common high-speed railway is a very important feature in girder performance, and requires detailed management during the maintenance of the girder. This study aimed to analyze the timing of re-tension prediction of PSC Box girder based on the reduction level of the packing force inside the girder and the results of the tension loss measured without the train load test. As a result of predicting the timing of re-tension according to the level of tension reduction of the PSC Box Girder, the Jacking Force Loss curve was gently analyzed before the structure reached 17 years after confirmed completion, and 17 years later, it was found that the jacking force loss curve progressed rapidly. The results confirmed that the tension of the structure decreases with the service life increase, but considerably decreases as the structure ages. Therefore, more data and research on tension loss of facilities over 20 years are much required.
