Unmanned Water Treatment System Based on Five Senses Technology to Cope with Overloading of Customized Smart Water Grid Machines (스마트워터그리드 맞춤형 기계과부하시 오감기술을 이용한 무인 수처리 시스템에 관한 연구)

  • In or To use, manage, and preserve sustainable water resources for the current and future generations amid the threat of abnormal climate, it is necessary to establish a smart water grid system, the next-generation intelligent water management system. In this study, sensors, which make use of the five senses to watch, listen, and detect machine vibration, bearing temperature, machine operation sounds, current, voltage, and other symptoms that cannot be verified when the irrigation facilities are running, are used to establish various decision-making criteria appropriate to on-site situations. Based on such criteria, the unmanned conditions in the facilities were verified and analyzed. Existing technologies require on-site workers to check any defects caused by overloading of machines, which is the biggest constraining factor in the application of an unmanned control system for irrigation facilities. The new technology proposed in this study, on the other hand, allows for the unmanned analysis of the existence of machine vibration. This controls the decision-making process of any defect based on the analysis results, and necessary measures are taken automatically, resulting in improved reliability of the unmanned automation.

  • Between 1984 and 1989, 22 patients with pituitary adenomas were treated with radiation therapy. The tumor was controlled in 18 of 22 ($81.8\%$) patients for an observed period of II to 98 months. Eleven of 12 ($92\%$) patients with visual field defect experienced normalization or improvement, and 3 of 5 evaluable patients with hyperprolactinemia achieved normalization in one and decrement in two patients. We concluded that: (a) postoperative radiotherapy is clearly effective in the controlling of clinical symptoms and signs resulting from pituitary adenoma: (b) In the macroadenoma, the difference of control rate between suprasellar, <2 cm. and suprasellar,> 2 cm. was not significant.

  • The resistance switching memory devices have several advantages to take breakthrough for the limitation of operation speed, retention, and device scale. Especially, the metal-oxide materials such as ZnO are able to fabricate on the flexible and visible transparent plastic substrate. Also, the quantum dots (QDs) embedded in dielectric layer could be improve the ratio between the low and the high resistance becauseof their Coulomb blockade, carrier trap and induced filament path formation. In this study, we irradiated 0.2-MeV-electron beam on the ZnO/QDs/ZnO structure to control the defect and oxygen vacancy of ZnO layer. The metal-oxide QDs embedded in ZnO layer on Pt/glass substrate were fabricated for a memory device and evaluated electrical properties after 0.2-MeV-electron beam irradiations. To formation bottom electrode, the Pt layer (200 nm) was deposited on the glass substrate by direct current sputter. The ZnO layer (100 nm) was deposited by ultra-high vacuum radio frequency sputter at base pressure $1{\times}10^{-10}$ Torr. And then, the metal-oxide QDs on the ZnO layer were created by thermal annealing. Finally, the ZnO layer (100 nm) also was deposited by ultra-high vacuum sputter. Before the formation top electrode, 0.2 MeV liner accelerated electron beams with flux of $1{\times}10^{13}$ and $10^{14}$ electrons/$cm^2$ were irradiated. We will discuss the electrical properties and the physical relationships among the irradiation condition, the dislocation density and mechanism of resistive switching in the hybrid memory device.

Loss of Aquaporin-3 in Placenta and Fetal Membranes Induces Growth Restriction in Mice

  • Aquaporin (AQP) 3, a facilitated transporter of water and glycerol, expresses in placenta and fetal membranes, but the detailed localization and function of AQP3 in placenta remain unclear. To elucidate a role of AQP3 in placenta, we defined the expression and cellular localization of AQP3 in placenta and fetal membranes, and investigated the structural and functional differences between wild-type and AQP3 null mice. Gestational sacs were removed during mid-gestational period and amniotic fluid was aspirated for measurements of volume and composition. Fetuses with attached placenta and fetal membranes were weighed and processed for histological assessment. AQP3 strongly expressed in basolateral membrane of visceral yolk sac cells of fetal membrane, the syncytiotrophoblasts of the labyrinthine placenta and fetal nucleated red blood cell membrane. Mice lacking AQP3 did not exhibit a significant defect in differentiation of trophoblast stem cells and normal placentation. However, AQP3 null fetuses were smaller than their control litter mates in spite of a decrease in litter size. The total amniotic fluid volume per gestational sac was reduced, but the amniotic fluid-to-fetal weight ratio was increased in AQP3 null mice compared with wild-type mice. Glycerol, free fatty acid and triglyceride levels in amniotic fluid of AQP3 null mice were significantly reduced, whereas lactate level increased when compared to those of wild-type mice. These results suggest a role for AQP3 in supplying nutrients from yolk sac and maternal blood to developing fetus by facilitating transport of glycerol in addition to water, and its implication for the fetal growth in utero.

RHT-Based Ellipse Detection for Estimating the Position of Parts on an Automobile Cowl Cross Bar Assembly (RHT 기법을 이용한 카울크로스바의 조립위치 결정에 관한 연구)

  • This study proposed the new method of discerning the assembled parts and presuming the position of central point in a Cowl Cross Bar (CCB) using a Charge-Couple Device (CCD) camera attached to a robot in the auto assembly line. Three control points of an ellipse were decided by three reference points, which were equally distanced. The radii of these reference points were determined by the size of the object, and the repeated presumption secured the precise determination. The comparison of the central point of ellipse presumed by Randomized Hough Transform (RHT) with the part information stored in a database was used for determining the faulty part in an assembly. The method proposed in this study was applied for the real-time inspection of elliptical parts, such as bolt, nut hole and so on, connected to a CCB using a CCD camera. The findings of this study showed that the precise decision on whether the parts are inferior or not can be made irrespective of the lighting condition of industrial site and the noises of the surface of the part. In addition, the defect decision on the individual elliptic parts assembled in a CCB showed more than 98% accuracy within a 500-millisecond period at most.

Formation of Brain Tumor and Lymphoma by Deregulation of Apoptosis Related Gene Expression in VP-SV40 T Ag Transgenic Mice

  • The neuropeptide vasopressin (VP) is a nine- amino acid hormone synthesized as preprohormone in the cell bodies of hypothalamic magnocellular neurons. The tumor in magnocellular neurons of the hypothalamus is associated with disfunctions of the cell bodies, leading to the diabetes insipidus. In order to study with the diabetes insipidus caused by a defect in VP synthesis and its secretion, we have produced the transgenic mice regulated by vasopressin promoter inserted to SV40 T antigen coding sequence (pVPSV.IGR2.1). One transgenic line expressing high levels of SV40 T antigen was propagated. The founder and all transgene positive adult animals have appeared with shorten mortality or apparent phenotypic abnormalities, including immune complex disease, and eventually die between 4 and 8 months of age. The mRNA and protein of SV40T antigen transgene were detected in brain of fetus as well as in brain, spleen, lung and lymph node in moribund at the age of 20 weeks. Histological analysis of transgenic mice showed that tumor developed in brain similar to primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNET) in man. We also detected lymphomas in spleen and lymph node, and consequent tumor formation in various tissues of the transgenic mice. In pVPSV.IGR2.1, 21% mice showed brain tumor (PNET) at 5 weeks and 100% mice showed brain tumor after 15 weeks. In addition, Expression of apoptosis related genes (Bcl-28 & Bax) was increased over their age in mice with PNET as compared to control mice. Apoptosis related gene expression might be deregulated in mice with brain tumor. However, transgenic mice were not developed with the diabetes insipidus. These mice represent the first disease model to exhibit primitive neuroectodermal tumor in brain, as well as a unique model system for exploring the cellular pathogenesis of lymphomas.

Stereological and Morphometric Analysis of MRI Chiari Malformation Type-1

  • Objective : In this study, we aimed to investigate the underlying ethiological factors in chiari malformation (CM) type-I (CMI) via performing volumetric and morphometric length-angle measurements. Methods : A total of 66 individuals [33 patients (20-65 years) with CMI and 33 control subjects] were included in this study. In sagittal MR images, tonsillar herniation length and concurrent anomalies were evaluated. Supratentorial, infratentorial, and total intracranial volumes were measured using Cavalieri method. Various cranial distances and angles were used to evaluate the platybasia and posterior cranial fossa (PCF) development. Results : Tonsillar herniation length was measured $9.09{\pm}3.39mm$ below foramen magnum in CM group. Tonsillar herniation/concurrent syringomyelia, concavity/defect of clivus, herniation of bulbus and fourth ventricle, basilar invagination and craniovertebral junction abnormality rates were 30.3, 27, 18, 2, 3, and 3 percent, respectively. Absence of cisterna magna was encountered in 87.9% of the patients. Total, IT and ST volumes and distance between Chamberlain line and tip of dens axis, Klaus index, clivus length, distance between internal occipital protuberance and opisthion were significantly decreased in patient group. Also in patient group, it was found that Welcher basal angle/Boogard angle increased and tentorial slope angle decreased. Conclusion : Mean cranial volume and length-angle measurement values significantly decreased and there was a congenital abnormality association in nearly 81.5 percent of the CM cases. As a result, it was concluded that CM ethiology can be attributed to multifactorial causes. Moreover, congenital defects can also give rise to this condition.

  • Congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS) or Ondine's curse is a very rare sleep disorder that is the result of a congenital failure of the autonomic control of ventilation caused by insensitivity of the chemoreceptor to hypercapnea during sleep. Gastrointestinal motility disorders, particularly a congenital megacolon (Hirschsprung disease) is often combined with CCHS. This combination can be explained by a defect in the migration of neuronal cells from the neural crest (neurocristopathy) during the intrauterine period. A diagnosis of CCHS is made by confirming the failure of adequate ventilation in response to hypercapnea and hypoxia during sleep and the exclusion of other diseases. Young infants frequently show atypical clinical courses, and their conditions are frequently complicated with the long-term sequela of hypoxemic episodes. Therefore, a high index of suspicion and active treatment with mechanical ventilation are important for reducing recurrent hypoxemic episodes in the neonatal period. This paper reports the follow up of a case of CCHS in a neonate who showed frequent intractable apnea and cyanosis and was given artificial mechanical ventilation during sleep.

Clinical evaluation of a biphasic calcium phosphate grafting material in the treatment of human periodontal intrabony defects

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the clinical outcome of open flap debridement (OFD) with a biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) graft to that of OFD without BCP graft for the treatment of intrabony periodontal defects (IBDs). Methods: The study included 25 subjects that had at least one intrabony defect of 2- or 3-wall morphology and an intrabony component ${\geq}4$ mm as detected radiographically. Subjects were randomly assigned to treatment with (BCP group, n=14) or without BCP (OFD group, n=11). Clinical parameters were recorded at baseline and 6 months after surgery and included the plaque index, gingival index, probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL), and gingival recession (REC). A stringent plaque control regimen was enforced for all of the patients during the 6-month observation period. Results: In all of the treatment groups, significant PD reductions and CAL gains occurred during the study period (P<0.01). At 6 months, patients in the BCP group exhibited a mean PD reduction of $3.7{\pm}1.2$ mm and a mean CAL gain of $3.0{\pm}1.1$ mm compared to the baseline. Corresponding values for the patients treated with OFD were $2.5{\pm}0.8$ mm and $1.4{\pm}1.0$ mm, respectively. Compared to OFD group, the additional CAL gain was significantly greater in the patients in BCP group (P=0.028). The additional PD reduction was significant for the BCP group (P=0.048). The REC showed a significant increase in both groups, and the amount of recession was significantly smaller in the BCP group than OFD group (P=0.023). In radiographic evaluation, the height of the bone fill in the BCP group was significantly greater than OFD group. Conclusions: The clinical benefits of BCP found in this study indicate that BCP may be an appropriate alternative to conventional graft materials.

Successful Epithelialization Using the Buccal Fat Pad Pedicle in Stage 3 Bisphosphonate-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw

  • Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) is defined as exposed necrotic bone without evidence of healing for at least 8 weeks in the maxillofacial area in a patient with history of bisphosphonate use. Obtaining complete coverage of the hard tissue by soft tissue in BRONJ patients is especially important. Therefore, managing the mucosa is one of the key factors in a successful outcome, but this is especially hard to achieve in BRONJ patients. Various applications of buccal fat pad in oral reconstruction-including the closure of surgical defects following tumor excision, repair of surgical defects following the excision of leukoplakia and submucous fibrosis, closure of primary and secondary palatal clefts, coverage of maxillary and mandibular bone grafts, and lining of sinus surface of maxillary sinus bone graft in sinus lift procedures for maxillary augmentation-have been studied. Eliminating all potential sites of infection and post-operative infection control is crucial in BRONJ. We present a case using the buccal fat pad pedicle for a stage 3 BRONJ defect. Uneventful total epithelialization of the buccal fat pad regardless of size was noted. In summary, the buccal fat pad has versatile application and various recipient sites for surgical utilization. It is an easy technique, with promising overall success rates. With careful selection and handling, buccal fat graft can resolve problems with soft tissue coverage in stage 2 or 3 BRONJ patients.
