This study documents KORDI's experience of successfully deploying a deep ocean buoy for monitoring oceanic and atmospheric variabilities in the tropical western Pacific Ocea nsince May 2010. The primary focus of this study was to compare TRITON (big and old type) with m-TRITON (smaller and new type) buoys within the JAMSTEC's buoy management system. The objective of operating a KORDI buoy is to ascertain oceanic variability in the tropical western Pacific. We adopted a slack-line mooring type to observe water temperatures at six layers from surface to 400 m depth. However, we could not acquire satisfactory results due to lack of expertise in buoy management system. A new KORDI buoy has been developing, which has been modified from both buoys, and ARGOS-3 satellite system and a slack-type mooring line.
In many applications, Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) are required to be capable of course keeping, depth keeping, and height keeping. The ROV must be able to resist time-variant external forces and moments or frequent manipulate changes in some specified circumstances, which require the control system meets high precision, fast response, and good robustness. This study introduces a Fuzzy-Incomplete Derivative Ahead-PID (FIDA-PID) control system for a 500-meter ROV with four degrees of freedom (DOFs) to achieve course, depth, and height keeping. In the FIDA-PID control system, a Fuzzy Gain Scheduling Controller (FGSC) is designed on the basis of the incomplete derivative ahead PID control system to make the controller suitable for various situations. The parameters in the fuzzy scheme are optimized via many cycles of trial-and-error in a 10-meter-deep water tank. Significant improvements have been observed through simulation and experimental results within 4-DOFs.
Amanifold is one of the essential subsea oil and gas production components to simplify the subsea production layout. It collects the production fluid from a couple of wellheads, transfers it to onshore or offshore storage platforms, and even accommodates water and gas injection flowlines. This paper presents the basic design procedure for a manifold frame structure with novel structural verification using in-house unity check codes. Loads and load cases for the design of an SIL 3 class-manifold are established from a survey of relevant industrial codes. The basic design of the manifold frame is developed based on simple load considerations such as the self weights of the manifold frame and pipeline system. In-house software with Eurocode 3 embedded, called INHA-SOLVER, makes it possible to carry out code checks on the yield and buckling unities. This paper finally proves that the new design of the manifold frame structure is effective to resist a permanent and environment load, and the in-house code is also adaptively combined with the commercial finite element code Nastran.

An experimental study of deep-water breaking waves is performed by nonlinear wave evolution as well as superposition of different wave frequencies. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional wave instabilities and breakings are observed in nonlinear wave evolution. The wave energy evolves with almost the same initial wave energy before breaking but decreases significantly after breaking process. Large spilling and plunging waves are generated near e expected breaking location by means of faster waves overtaking slow waves at a certain point. More energy loss in vigorous plunging breakers is observed through breaking process.
Together with the development of measurement techniques, radiocarbon (14C) has been increasingly used as a key tool to investigate carbon cycling and associated biogeochemistry in the ocean. In this paper, the current status of radiocarbon studies in the East Sea (Japan Sea) is reviewed. Previously, spatiotemporal distribution and change of the water masses in the East Sea from 1979 to 1999 were investigated by using the 14C in the dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). Researches on sinking particulate organic carbon (POC) revealed that POC in the deep ocean has more complex and heterogeneous origins than we expected. In particular, since 2011, Korean researchers have been collecting sinking particle samples for more than 10 years, so it is expected that 14C of POC will provide important information to understand carbon cycling in relation to climate change. Although the quantity of 14C data published in the East Sea is still limited, the importance and the future direction of using 14C to understand the biogeochemical mechanisms of carbon cycling and its role as a carbon reservoir in the East Sea are detailed herein.

Deep Sea Water (DSW) has been exploited mainly by industry in a few countries including the U.S., Japan, Taiwan, and Korea. The development strategy of these states has pursued various goals based on their unique industrial environments and visions. Among them, Taiwan recently started their DSW industrialization, but has rapidly developed a variety of technologies and products. On the contrary, the Korean DSW industry has remained stagnant in the initial and growing stages for years, and now appears to need new plans and strategies for further development. The current literature lacks the strategy and policies required to foster the development of the domestic DSW industry. Relying upon the case of advanced foreign DSW industries, this study delineates the current status of the Korean DSW industry and discusses its future direction. Taiwan in particular has moved forward with policy development, financial and operation systems. This study attempts to provide a set of guidelines for the Korean DSW industry by focusing on the case of its Taiwanese equivalent. The Taiwanese strategical plans include premium drinkable water, government driven industrialization, diversification of DSW technologies and development of value-added products. This study provides a new direction for the DSW industry.
For long-range communication in deep water, low carrier frequency is efficient due to a decrease in transmission loss. However, there is a limitation in that the data rate decreases due to a narrow bandwith. In order to increase the data rate in an environment with a limited bandwidth, it is necessary to design a higher-order modulation scheme. This paper analyzes the long-range communication data modulated by higher-order modulation schemes. The long-range communication experiment (23 km ~) was conducted in East Sea in October 2020. During the experiment, a vertical line array was utilized and communication sequences were modulated by Phase Shift Keying (PSK) and Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) schemes and transmitted by a towed source. In more detail, PSK modulation consists of quadrature PSK and 8PSK, QAM modulation consists of 8QAM and 16QAM. Time reversal processing is applied to mitigate inter-symbol interference by utilizing the correlation between received signals and channel impulse responses. All modulation schemes show successful results at 23 km range, demonstrating the feasibility of higher-order modulation in long-range communication.
Recently, environmental pollution and energy depletion problems have been issued over the world. For this reason, many renewable systems have been developing. Of these, the Ocean Thermal Energy Conservation(OTEC) is drawing attention as the upcoming alternative energy source. In this paper, the efficiency of each of OTEC which harness the effluent from nuclear power plant was analyzed by using computer calculation. The result, shows that Ul-jin Nuclear Power Plant is the best place geographically and the regenerative cycle is most outstanding performance cycle for OTEC. The difference of temperature between surface water and deep water temperature should be greater than $20^{\circ}C$ in order to increase the efficiency.
Based on the data obtained under the China-Korea joint project (1997-2001) and historic observations, the distribution, transportation and sedimentation of sediment in the southern Yellow Sea (SYS) are discussed, and the controversial formation mechanism of muddy sediments is also explored. The sediment transport trend analysis indicates that the net transport direction of sediment in the central SYS (a fine-grained sediment deposited area) points to $123.4^{\circ}E,\;35.1^{\circ}N$, which is a possible sedimentation center in the central SYS. The sediment transport pattern is verified by the distribution of total suspended matter (TSM) concentration and ${\delta}^{13}C$ values of particulate organic carbon (POC), the latter indicates that the bottom water plays a more important role than the surface water in transporting the terrigenous material to the central deep-water area of the SYS, and the Yellow Sea circulation is an important control factor for the sediment transport pattern in the SYS. The carbon isotope signals of organic matter in sediments indicate that the Shandong subaqueous delta has high sedimentation rate and the deposited sediments originate mainly from the modern Yellow River. The terrigenous sediments in deep-water area of the SYS originate mainly from the old Yellow River and the modern Yellow River, and only a small portion originates from the modern Yangtze River. The analytical results of TSM and stable carbon isotopes are further confirmed by another independent tracer of sediment source, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Five light mineral provinces in the SYS can be identified and they indicate inhomogeneity in sources and sedimentary environment. The modern shelf sedimentary processes in the SYS are controlled by shelf dynamic factors. The muddy depositional systems are produced in the shelf low-energy environments, which are controlled by some meso-scale cyclonic eddies (cold eddies) in the central SYS and the area southwest of the Cheju Island. On the contrary, an anticyclonic muddy depositional system (warm eddy sediment) appears in the southeast of the SYS (the area northwest of the Cheju Island). In this study, we give the cyclonic and anticyclonic eddy sedimentation patterns.

The metals such as Al, Ag, Au, Cu, Cd, Co, Fe, Ni, Pb, Zn, etc are present at very low concentration in seawater and are classified as so-called trace metals. Whiles some of them are used in metabolism of living organism as a micronutrient, they may show toxic effects on organisms in case of a limited threshold concentration of them Plenty of studies on trace metals have been performed bemuse trace metals have a persistent influence and an adverse effect on marine environment and ecosystem. For long years, when the concentration of trace metals in natural waters such as seawater and fresh water are measured with high precision and accuracy, some systematic errors have been recognized to be present in measurements. Since 1975 in US and European countries, the measured concentration of trace metals in seawater have been found to be lower by factors of 10-1,000 than the previous data of trace metals measurements and the vertical profiles of the measurements have been shown to reflect well-known biological, physical and geochemical processes. These results are attributed to great advances in analytical instrumentation and methodology for trace metals measurements. Precautions against the contamination of samples are required to be taken in the process of sampling, storage, and analysis of samples. However, in Korea, erroneous data of trace metals with regard to ocean and marine environment related survey and investigations are reported The lock of exact understanding and information regarding precautions in sampling, storage and analysis of samples lead to the deterioration of data quality, especially in the analysis of trace metals. The major procedures to obtain the accurate data of trace metals in natural waters are introduced for applying to the study and assessment of marine environments.
