Empirical mode decomposition (EMD) is applied to analyze time series characterized with nonlinearity and nonstationarity. This decomposition could be utilized to construct finite and small number intrinsic mode functions (IMF) that describe complicated time series, while admitting the Hilbert transformation properties. EMD has the capability of being adaptive, capture local characteristics, and applicable to nonlinear and nonstationary processes. Unlike discrete wavelet transform (DWT), IMF eliminates spurious harmonics and retains meaningful instantaneous frequencies. Examples based on data representing natural phenomena are given to demonstrate highlight the power of this method in contrast and comparison of other ones. A presentation of the energy-frequency-time distribution of these signals found to be more informative and intuitive when based on Hilbert transformation.

This paper reports the suitability of a domain decomposition technique for the hybrid simulation of dilute polymer solution flows using Eulerian Brownian dynamics and Radial Basis Function Networks (RBFN) based methods. The Brownian Configuration Fields (BCF) and RBFN method incorporates the features of the BCF scheme (which render both closed form constitutive equations and a particle tracking process unnecessary) and a mesh-less method (which eliminates element-based discretisation of domains). However, when dealing with large scale problems, there appear several difficulties: the high computational time associated with the Stochastic Simulation Technique (SST), and the ill-condition of the system matrix associated with the RBFN. One way to overcome these disadvantages is to use parallel domain decomposition (DD) techniques. This approach makes the BCF-RBFN method more suitable for large scale problems.
One of the obstacles on the grid generation for complex geometries with multi-block structured grids is the domain decomposition. In this paper, the domain decomposition for two-dimensional flow is studied using the flow characteristics. The potential flow equation with the source distribution on the panel surface is solved to extract the information of the flow. The current approach is applied to a two-dimensional cylinder and Bi-NACA0012 problems. The generated grids are applied to generic flow solvers and reasonable results are obtained. It can be concluded that the current methods is useful in the domain decomposition for the multi-block structured grid.
In this paper, we propose an iterative method for a symmetric interior penalty Galerkin method for heterogeneous elliptic problems. The iterative method consists mainly of two parts based on a non-overlapping domain decomposition approach. One is an intermediate preconditioner constructed by understanding the properties of the discontinuous finite element functions and the other is a preconditioning related to the dual-primal finite element tearing and interconnecting (FETI-DP) methodology. Numerical results for the proposed method are presented, which demonstrate the performance of the iterative method in terms of various parameters associated with the elliptic model problem, the finite element discretization, and non-overlapping subdomain decomposition.
This paper presents a low complexity QR decomposition (QRD) architecture for MIMO detector. In the proposed approach, various CORDIC-based QRD algorithms are efficiently combined together to reduce the computational complexity of the QRD hardware. Based on the computational complexity analysis on various QRD algorithms, a low complexity approach is selected at each stage of QRD process. The proposed QRD architecture can be applied to any arbitrary dimension of channel matrix, and the complexity reduction grows with the increasing matrix dimension. Our QR decomposition hardware was implemented using Samsung $0.13{\mu}m$ technology. The numerical results show that the proposed architecture achieves 47% increase in the QAR (QRD Rate/Gate count) with 28.1% power savings over the conventional Householder CORDIC-based architecture for the $4{\times}4$ matrix decomposition.
Electricity price prediction plays a crucial part in making the schedule and managing the risk to the competitive electricity market participants. However, it is a difficult and challenging task owing to the characteristics of the nonlinearity, non-stationarity and uncertainty of the price series. This study proposes a hybrid improved strategy which incorporates data preprocessor components and a forecasting engine component to enhance the forecasting accuracy of the electricity price. In the developed forecasting procedure, the Seasonal Adjustment (SA) method and the Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (EEMD) technique are synthesized as the data preprocessing component; the Coupled Simulated Annealing (CSA) optimization method and the Least Square Support Vector Regression (LSSVR) algorithm construct the prediction engine. The proposed hybrid approach is verified with electricity price data sampled from the power market of New South Wales in Australia. The simulation outcome manifests that the proposed hybrid approach obtains the observable improvement in the forecasting accuracy compared with other approaches, which suggests that the proposed combinational approach occupies preferable predication ability and enough precision.

In this study, we investigated the decomposition of highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide in the range of 1.04-2.55 M by transition metal ion catalysts such as $Fe^{2+}$ and $Cu^{2+}$. The effect of metal ion concentration on the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide was examined experimentally, and the decomposition rate constants were determined by combining the experimental data with a theoretical approach. The rate of the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide was found to be first order with respect to its concentration. The decomposition rate constant was able to be treated as a linear function of the initial metal ion concentration. The validity of the decomposition rate constants determined was verified by good agreements between the calculated and experimental results.

In this paper, thermal characteristics of a nitrous oxide ($N_2O$) catalytic reactor with packed-bed geometry are theoretically and numerically investigated. Several researchers experimentally presented that catalytic decomposition of $N_2O$ in a packed bed generates about 82kJ/mole in the exothermic reaction. Based on the results they have studied the catalytic decomposition of $N_2O$ in a packed bed to use it not only as a mono-propellant thrust for small satellites but also as an igniter system for hybrid rockets. So we aim to identify important parameters existing in an $N_2O$ packed-bed geometry, and to clarify its critical effect on thermal characteristics of the catalytic igniter using a porous medium approach.
The time-varying mean (TVM) component of non-stationary wind speeds is commonly extracted utilizing empirical mode decomposition (EMD) in practice, whereas the accuracy of the extracted TVM is difficult to be quantified. To deal with this problem, this paper proposes an approach to identify and extract the optimal TVM from several TVM results obtained by the EMD. It is suggested that the optimal TVM of a 10-min time history of wind speeds should meet both the following conditions: (1) the probability density function (PDF) of fluctuating wind component agrees well with the modified Gaussian function (MGF). At this stage, a coefficient p is newly defined as an evaluation index to quantify the correlation between PDF and MGF. The smaller the p is, the better the derived TVM is; (2) the number of local maxima of obtained optimal TVM within a 10-min time interval is less than 6. The proposed approach is validated by a numerical example, and it is also adopted to extract the optimal TVM from the field measurement records of wind speeds collected during a sandstorm event.
An automatic mesh generation scheme with unstructured quadrilateral elements on trimmed NURBS surfaces has been developed. In this paper NURBS surface geometries in the IGES format have been employed to represent geometric models. For unstructured mesh generation with quadrilateral elements, a domain decomposition algorithm employing loop operators has been modified. As for the surface meshing, an indirect 2D approach is proposed in which both quasi-expanded planes and projection planes are employed. Sampled meshes for complex models are presented to demonstrate the robustness of the algorithm.
