Effect of storage on the tree and quality of early cultivar of Citrus unshiu Marc. produced in Cheju according to harvest time were investigated. Soluble solids, acid content, flesh ratio, firmness and specific cavity of the fruits harvested at 27th of November were 12.0, 1.03%, 79.98%, 0.774kg-force, 0.912, respectively. Soluble solids, total sugar and reducing sugar were increased gradually, but acid content was decreased slightly as delayed in harvest time. Otherwise specific gravity and firmness were not shown in great during harvest time, color index(a/b) was increased sharply till late November and then remained in stationary phase. On these result, we recommend that the harvest time of early cultivar of Citrus unshiu Marc. would be during December because of wilting partly. Fully ripened-fruits harvested late, compared to ordinary harvest time, with cold storage would be kept more quality and freshness of fruits for fresh consumption than the fruits harvested early and stored at room temperature.
Compared to marine dinoflagellates, freshwater species are rarely recorded in Korea. In the present study, we isolated a freshwater dinoflagellate, Palatinus, from the Paldang Reservoir, Korea, in December 2021. The overall cell shape was ovoid, and the cell size was 34.3 ㎛ in length (25.8-39.5 ㎛) and 28.4 ㎛ in width (21.5-34 ㎛). An eyespot was usually observed near the sulcal region. The Kofoidian plate formula of the species was determined to be 4', 2a, 7", 6c, 5s, 5''', and 2''''. Apical pore complex was not observed. However, variations in the cingular plate caused by the fusion of 3C and 4C were observed. Analyses of 28S rDNA sequences revealed that the unidentified species is 100% similar to Palatinus apiculatus, and clustered together in the same lineage in the phylogenetic tree (100% bootstrap value). Our findings confirmed that the isolated dinoflagellate is Palatinus apiculatus, which was discovered for the first time in Korean freshwaters.

This study was conducted to find out the effects of relationship between ocean-meteorological factors and snowfall at Incheon, Gunsan and Mokpo when cold and dry continental air mass passed through the West Sea of Korea in winter. Mean snowfall from December to February showed the order of Gunsan (12.7 cm), Mokpo (9.0 cm) and Incheon (7.8 cm). In particular, the snowfall in the three regions showed the regional difference in December and February. It was well consistent with the extension of continental high. Extension of continental high can cause effect on snowfall at the west regions (Inchoen, Gunsan, Mokpo) of the Korean Peninsula. The continental high extended from the southern China to western coastal region of the Korean Peninsula in December, it extended from the northern China to central area of the Korean Peninsula in January. It also extended from the north side of China through Bohai Sea and Yodong Peninsula to central area of the Korean Peninsula in February. Therefore, more snowfall recorded in Incheon is higher in February than December whereas Gunsan and Mokpo is the opposite. The heavy snowfall at the three regions was caused by loss of the heat from the ocean to air when the heat loss was higher than 100 $W/m^2$. The heavy snowfall was also observed when the arrangement of continental high atmospheric pressure and low pressure was high at the west and low at the east, which formed a front in West and when the wind blow from the North or North West at the speed of 4${\sim}$8 m/sec.
The objectives of this study were to access climate change by global warming in Korea, and to investigate its effects on production efficiency of lactating dairy cows. Two regions, Daegu and Daekwanryung, were selected to represent a warm and a cold area, respectively. Time-series analyses on meteorological records for 25 years (from January 1, 1988 to December 31, 2012) revealed significant and different climate changes in two regions. In the warm area there has been a significant (P<0.05) increase in low temperature during the summer, which can cause heat stress to the animal. On the other hand, a decrease in low temperature during the winter was observed in the cold region (P<0.01), and cold stress in winter can thus be an issue in this region. Simulations using a model integrated the Korean feeding standard for dairy cattle and the environmental effect module of Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System, indicated that a reduction in feed efficiency can be a problem during the winter in the cold region while during the summer in the warm area. We conclude that the effect of climate change by global warming varies in different areas in Korea and a region-specific management strategy should be developed in order to maintain productivity, health and welfare of lactating dairy cows.

Lifestyle of adolescents cause a lot of health effects in the future. Therefore, in Korea, school health law was enacted and relevant business such as school education program is being carried out. This study was conducted to recognize symptom according to grade. A survey of youth health status was conducted at 19 middle and high schools in Seongnam city from May 2015 to December 2015. The survey made up of 14 questions which was about the health status satisfaction on the adolescent was conducted to investigate frequency by year and the respective health status of 6 grades. A total of 9,584 students responded to the survey, 58.22% answered that they were not free of constipation. 25.69% of respondents had no symptoms of headache, consequently over 70% of respondents had headache. 57.06% of respondents had no symptoms of low back pain and 34.7% had no symptoms of neck & shoulder pain, therefore over 50% of respondents had muscular skeletal symptoms. In menstrual history, only 17.95% of respondents said their period was regular and painless. In respiratory history, except cold, no nasal drop & obstruction has appeared in the group of 54.02%. And 62.97% of respondents had persistent cough usually with cold and 23.41% had cough with cold breeze even if not catch cold. In the third grade of high school students, there were many complaints of pain in various parts such as headache, back pain and shoulder pain, neck pain and menstrual pain, and there was a high rate of complaints of digestive system symptom and defecation symptom. More than half of respondent had constipation discomfort, headache and musculo-skeletal symptoms, menstrual problems and cough. In the third grade of high school students, the rate of complaints of pain complaints, digestive system symptoms, and bowel symptoms was high. Therefore, there is a need for measures and management for continuous health care and health promotion in accordance with students' symptoms and age at each grade level.
This experiment was conducted to know tolerance to cold temperature of the grape shoots collected at different locations and dormant periods in 1996 to 1997. The results from this experiment were as follows; (1) There is a little difference among locations in their electric conductance of Campbell Early cultivar, in Dec. 1996. But the least damage was shown at Kyung Joo while severe at Young Dong district in Jan. 1997. (2) Electric conductance of Sheridan cultivar was showing the same tendency as Campbell Early. (3) Early dormant period(December) affected severe bud browning at Young Dong than that of January. The grape shoot collected at Kyung San and Kyung Joo Showed a little influence on bud browning during December and January. (4) Likewise, bark browning of the grape shoot collected at Young Dong showed the same tendency with bud browning test. (5) The bud of grape shoot was bursted even at $-20^{\circ}C$. But rate of bud bursting was lower at Young Dong than the other districts at $-15^{\circ}C$ and $-20^{\circ}C$. From these results, the authors believe that we must introduce and test for suitable cultivation area and temperature before selection of permanent cultivating location.

To study the fluctuation of cold water in the East China Sea in summer heat budget of the Yellow Sea in winter was analysed based on the oceanographic and meteorological data compiled from 1951 to 1974. The maintain value of insolation was observed in December($160{\sim}190ly/day$), while the maximum in February ($250{\sim}260ly/day$). The range of the annual variation was found to be less than 50 ly/day. The value of the radiation term ($Q_s-Q_r-Q_h$) was remarkably small (mean 20 ly/day) in winter. It was negative value in December and January, and a positive value in February. The minimum total heat exchange from the sea ($Q_({h+c}$) was found value (471 ly/day) in February 1962, and the maximum (882 ly/day) in January 1963. The annual total heat exchange was minimum (588 ly/day) in 1962, and maximum (716 ly/day) in 1968. If the average deviation of mean water temperature at 50m depth layer were assumed to be the horizontal index ($C_h$) of colder water, $C_h$ is $C_h=\frac{{\Sigma}\limit_i\;A_i\;T_i}{{\Sigma}\limit_i\;A_i}$ where $A_i$ denotes the area of isothermal region and $T_i$ the value of deviation from mean sea water temperature. The vertical index ($C_v$) of cold water can be expressed similarly. Consequently the total index (C) of cold water equals to the sum of the two components, i.e. $C=C_h$+$C_v$. Taking the deviation of mean sea surface temperature(T'w) in the third ten-day of Novembers in the Yellow Sea as the value of the initial condition, the following expressions are deduced : $C-T'w=32.06 - 0.049$$\;Q_T$$C_h-T'w/2=12.20-0.019\;Q_T$$C_v-T'w/2=18.07-0.027\;Q_T$ where $Q_T$ denotes the total heat exchange of the sea. The correlation coefficients of these regression equations were found to be greater than 0.9. Heat budget was 588 ly/day in winter, and minimum water temperature of cold water was $18^{\circ}C$ in summer of 1962. The isotherm of $23^{\circ}C$ extended narrowly to southward up to $29^{\circ}N$ in summer. However, heat budget was 716 ly/day, and minimum water temperature of cold water was $12^{\circ}C$ in summer of 1968. The isotherm of $23^{\circ}C$ extended widely to southward up to $28^{\circ}30'N$ in summer. As a result of the present study, it may be concluded that the fluctuation of cold water of the East China Sea in summer can be predicted by the calculation of heat budget of the Yellow Sea in winter.

Two dominant thrips in hot pepper (Capsicum annuum) cultivating in greenhouses are Frankliniella occidentalis and F. intonsa in Korea. This study investigated their overwintering physiology. These two thrips were freeze-susceptible and suppressed the body freezing temperature by lowering supercooling point (SCP) down to -15~-27℃. However, these SCPs varied among species and developmental stages. SCPs of F. occidentalis were -25.7±0.5℃ for adults, -17.2±0.3℃ for pupae, and -15.0±0.4℃ for larvae. SCPs of F. intonsa were -24.0±1.0℃ for adults, -27.0±0.5℃ for pupae, -17.2±0.8℃ for larvae. Cold injuries of both species occurred at low temperature treatments above SCPs. Thrips mortality increased as the treatment temperature decreased and its exposure period increased. F. occidentalis exhibited higher cold tolerance than F. intonsa. In both species, adults were more cold-tolerant than larvae. Two thrips species exhibited a rapid cold hardening because a pre-exposure to 0℃ for 2 h significantly enhanced the cold tolerance to a lethal cold temperature treatment at -10℃ for 2 h. In addition, a sequential exposure of the thrips to decreasing temperatures made them to be acclimated to low temperatures. To investigate the overwintering sites of the two species, winter monitoring of the thrips was performed at the greenhouses. During winter season (November~February), adults of the two species were not captured in outside of the greenhouses. However, F. occidentalis adults were captured to the traps and observed in weeds within the greenhouses. F. occidentalis adults were also emerged from soil samples obtained from the greenhouses during the winter season. F. intonsa adults did not come out from the soil samples at November and December, but emerged from the soil samples obtained after January. To determine the adult emergence due to diapause development, two thrips species were reared under different photoperiods. Adult development occurred in all photoperiod treatments in F. occidentalis, but did not in F. intonsa especially under short periods. Tomato spotted wilt virus, which is transmitted by these two species, was detected in the weeds infested by the thrips during the winter season. These results suggest that F. occidentalis develops on weeds in the greenhouses while F. intonsa undergoes a diapause in the soil during winter.

$NO^3$-N removal was examined from July 2002 to December 2002 of a surface-flow constructed treatment wetland cell, which was a part of a treatment wetland system composed of four wetland cells and one distribution pond. The system was established on rice paddy near the Kohung Estuarine Lake located at the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. The lake and the paddy were formed by a salt marsh reclamation project. Effluent from a secondary-level treatment plant was funneled into the system. The investigated cell was created in June 2002. Its dimensions were 87 m in length and 14 m in width. It had an open water zone at its center, which was equivalent to 10 percent of its total area. Reeds(Phragmites australis) were transplanted from natural wetlands into the cell and their stems were cut at about 40 cm height from their bottom ends. Average 25 $m^3$/day of effluent from the plant was funneled into the cell by gravity flow and average 24.2$m^3$/day of its treated effluent was discharged into the Sinyang Stream flowing into the lake. Its water depth was maintained about 0.2 m and its hydraulic detention time averaged 5.2 days. The average height of the reed stems was 45.2 cm in July 2002 and 80.5 cm in September 2002. The number of stems averaged 40.3 stems/$m^2$ in July 2002 and 74.5 stems/$m^2$ in September 2002. The reeds were established initially well. $NO_3$-N loading rate of influent and effluent averaged 173.7 and $93.5mg/m2{\cdot}day$, respectively. Removal of $NO_3$-N averaged $80.2mg/m2{\cdot}day$ and its removal rate by mass was about 50 %. Considering the initial operation of the cell and the inclusion of the cold months of November and December in the analysis period, the $NO_3$-N removal rate was good.
The leaf persisting and seasonal leaf color characteristics of deciduous woody landscape plants were investigated through the field survey in Suwon region. The leaf period was about 270 days from March 20, 1992 when Prunus padus was leaf spreading to December 17, 1992 when Lonicera sempervirens was leaf falling. The plants of leaf period over 240 days were Elaegagnus umbellata var. coreana, Salix pseudo-lasiogyn, Ligustrum obtusi-folium, Rosa multiflora, Lonicera sempervirens and Clematis viticella. The woody landscape plants bearing the red leaf by KBS standard color number before fall foliage coloring were Prunus salicina, Berberis thunbergii 'Atropurpurea', Acer platanoides 'Red King', Acer palmatum var. Pendula 'Crimson Queen', Parthenocissus tricuspidata, Nyssa sylvatica, Acer palmatum var. sanguineum, and the yellow leaf, Berberis thunbergii Variegata 'Aurea', Physocarpus opulifolius 'Luteus', and Forsythia koreana 'Seoul Cold', Ligustrum X vicaryi which is variegation. The fall foliage color period was about 100 days from September 6, 1992 when Euonymus alatus was fall foliage coloring, to December 17, 1992 when Lonicera sempervirens was leaf falling. (Table 24) And in terms of color based on KBS standard color number, 60.7% of fall foliage were yellow, 37.4%, red, respectively.
