  • Curved duct channel flow characteristics for non-Newtonian gel fluid is investigated. A simulant gel propellant mixed by Water, Carbopol 941 and NaOH solution has been chosen to analyze the gel propellant flow behavior. Rheological data have been measured prior to the flow analysis where water-gel propellant and water-gel propellant with $Al_2O_3$ nano particles are both used. The critical Dean number examined by the numerical simulation in the U-shape duct flow reveals that although water-gel-nano propellants have higher apparent viscosity, the critical Dean number do show no notable difference for both the two gel propellant. It is found that the power-law index may be a dominant parameter in determining the critical Dean number and that the gel with particles addition may be more vulnerable to Dean instability.

  • In the present study, a micro holographic PTV (HPTV) system was used to experimentally investigate the structure of 3D flow within a curved micro-tube with varying Dean number. The employed HPTV system incorporated a high-speed digital camera to measure the temporal evolution of the 3D velocity fields of micro-scale fluid flows. With increasing Dean number, flow in the curved tube is transformed from a steady flow to a secondary flow with two counter-rotating vortices. In this study, to analyze the 3D flow characteristics in the curved section of tube at a high Dean number, the trajectories of fluid particles were obtained experimentally using the whole 3D velocity field data obtained by the micro HPTV technique. The mean velocity field distribution was then obtained by ensemble averaging the instantaneous velocity fields. These results would be helpful in the design of various passages within micro-scale devices or micro-chips and in understanding the mixing phenomena that occur in curved conduits along the trajectories of fluid particles.

  • Due to the presence of Dean flow in curved ducts, helical channels have drawn attention recently because of the practical industrial applications. The manipulation of fluids through microfluidic devices is widely used in many scientific and industrial areas. In the present study, numerical simulations were performed on a helical microchannel to predict the impact of different design parameters that affect Dean flow. Important geometric parameters such as the channel cross section, pitch, radius of curvature, and number of turns were considered for the analysis. The study also incorporates the effect of varying flow rate on Dean flows. It was found from the simulation results that microchannel cross section and pitch have a significant impact on maintaining the Dean flow, compared to the radius of curvature, number of turns, and flow rate.

  • This paper presents a microparticle separator using a spiral microchannel. A particle separator based on the dean vortex was designed, fabricated, and characterized. Two different spiral microchannels were fabricated. Width and initial radius of rotation in the spiral microchannel were fixed to $300{\mu}m$ and 1.75 mm, respectively. Two different depths of the microchannels were designed at $50{\mu}m$ and $80{\mu}m$. In this experimental study, the equilibrium position of microparticles was monitored by using fluorescent microbeads. In the case of a low dean number (<1.0), lift force and dean drag force were similar, indicating that microbeads were distributed to almost all areas across microchannels. However, in the case of a high dean number (>1.0), dean drag force rather than lift force was dominant, indicating that microbeads moved toward the inner wall of the spiral microchannel.

It is believe that this is due to the fact that the power law index of both propellants have close value, as was demonstrated by Fellouah et al.[1]

  • We study the page replacement algorithms for demand paging, called CFLRU/C, CFLRU/E and DL-CFLRU/E, that reduce the number of erase operations and improve the wear-leveling degree of flash memory. Under the CFLRU/C and CFLRU/E algorithms, the victim page is the least recently used dean page within the pre-specified window. However, when there is not any dean page within the window, the CFLRU/C evicts the dirty page with the lowest frequency while the CFLRU/E evicts the dirty page with the highest number of erase operations. The DL-CFLRU/E algorithm maintains two page lists called the dean page list and the dirty page list, and first finds the page within the dean page list when it selects a victim. However, when it can not find any dean page within the dean page list, it evicts the dirty page with the highest number of erase operations within the window of the dirty page list. In this thesis, we show through simulation that the proposed schemes reduce the number of erase operations and improve the wear-leveling than the existing schemes like LRU.

  • Three-dimensional (3D) velocity field information of a laminar flow in a curved micro tube of circular cross-section has been measured using a digital micro holographic particle tracking velocimetry (HPTV). The temporal evolution of instantaneous velocity field of a water flow in a curved micro tube of $100\;{\mu}\;m$ and $300\;{\mu}\;m$ in inner diameter was obtained. The 3D mean velocity field distribution was obtained quantitatively by statistical-averaging of instantaneous velocity fields. At low Dean number (De), a secondary flow was not generated in the curved tube. With increasing Dean number, the secondary flow constituted of two large-scale counter-rotating vortices was formed due to enhanced centrifugal force. To reveal the flow characteristics of high Dean numbers, trajectories of fluid particles were evaluated experimentally from the 3D velocity fields data measured by the HPTV technique. The present experimental results, especially the 3D particle trajectories, would be helpful to design and to understand the mixing phenomena in 3D curved passages of various curved micro-tubes or micro-channels.

  • Numerical calculations have been carried out for the mixed convection flow in a concentric curved annulus with constant heat flux boundary condition at inner wall. The flow is assumed to be fully developed so as to maintain a constant streamwise pressure and temperature gradient. Computations have been performed for flows of radius ratio 0.2 and 0.5 with the Dean number lying in the range 0$K^{1/2}$ for the wide range of the Dean number considered here.

  • In this paper an experimental investigation of characteristics of developing transitional unsteady flows in a square-sectional 180。 curved duct are presented. The experimental study using air is carried out to measure axial velocity profiles secondary flow velocity profiles and entrance length by using Laser Do ppler Velocimeter(LDV) system. The flow development is found to depend upon Dean number dimensionless angular frequency velocity amplitude ration and cur-vature ratio. Of special interest is the secondary flow generated by centrifugal effects in the plane of the cross-section of the duct. The secondary flows are strong and complicate at entrance region. The entrance length of transitional pulsating flow is obtained to 120。 of bended angle of duct in this experimental conditions.

  • A three dimensional numerical simulation of laminar flow and heat transfer in fully developed curved pipe flow has been performed to study the effects of Dean number and pipe curvature on the flow and temperature fields under the thermal boundary condition of axially uniform wall heat flux. The Reynolds number under consideration ranges from 100 to 4000, and the Prandtl number is 0.71. The curvature ratios are 0.01, 0.025, 0.05 and 0.1. The axial velocity and temperature profiles and the local Nusselt number obtained from the present study are in good agreement with the previous numerical and experimental results currently available. To show the effects of pipe curvature on the flow and heat transfer, the resistance coefficients and heat transfer coefficients are computed and compared with the results of the previous theoretical and experimental studies. The averaged Nusselt number is correlated with Dean and Prandtl numbers. Furthermore, the critical Reynolds number for transition to turbulent flow is observed to depend upon the curvature ratio.
