  • Daylighting in educational environment is very important as it has an effect on students' performance as well as in their visual health. It is regarded as a good energy conservation method in saving energy used for lighting. This study conducted initial daylight measurements to analyze luminous environment in classrooms of Korean elementary school. The results indicated that the typical classroom had a reasonable level of daylight. However, it also found that the classroom had some problems of the uniformity of illuminance and the contrast of brightness of surfaces in the classroom. It is argued that daylighting design for school classroom should consider these aspects to make daylit classrooms ideal so as to provide comfortable visual environment.

  • An atrium space, unlike ordinary office rooms, accommodates variety of activities such as moving and resting of people and usually houses variety of vegitation to improve amenity and indoor environment. Many atrium buildings in Korea have been designed by considering the environmental criteria for human beings, not for the vegitation in the atrium space. Especially the daylighting designs are mostly focused on the required illuminances for various visual tasks of the occupants and glare controls. As a result, some atrium spaces do not provide sufficient light to the interior plants. Consequently, these atrium spaces require a high level of electric lighting to compensate the deficit of natural light for the photosynthesis of the vegitation. The purpose of this study was to suggest design guidelines for 4-sided atrium spaces having different well indices (WI), plan aspect ratio (PAR), and cardinal orientation. The findings from this study might be referenced by building designers when designing or selecting canopy systems by considering the daylight performances of the uncovered atrium spaces. In the study, the daylight performance was evaluated in terms of daylight autonomy (DA).

  • Recently, energy saving buildings are interested in many parts and many types of thermal insulating materials have been developed. The temperature and brightness of inside and outside building are influenced by weather change and sun's brightness and location. The location of building considering the natural daylight is an important parameter to build a building. To modeling the natural daylight, we used 342 electric bulbs which mean artificial daylight. All these bulbs are installed on dome shape frame. Especially it is focused on the luminosity control of each bulb in this paper. The luminosity of bulbs is controlled by phase control using several PIC microprocessors and triacs.

  • The use of natural light can improve the quality of indoor environment and also occupants health. In recent years, with an increasing awareness of sustainable development, various innovative methods of integrating daylight into the building have been developed. One such device is the light pipe system. The light pipes are innovative daylighting system that allow the transmission of daylight into the hard-to-reach indoor space. The system consist of mainly three parts. First, a top collector which is mounted on the outside of the roof and gathers skylight and sunlight. Second, light-reflective tube which is coated with highly reflective mirror finish material to transmit the daylight into the diffuser. Third, a diffuser which is installed on the ceiling in the room and spread the daylight into the room. Light pipes have been widely used and researched in many countries such as Australia, America, Canada and Britain. However, despite the significant daylight potential, little work have been carried out in Korea compare to the other countries. In this study, recent lighting technology and application of light pipe system in both Korea and other countries have been compared. For the results, the benefits of each light pipe system and suitable application in Korea is also discussed.

  • Today, there are increasing evidences that daylight is essential for health, well-being and productivity. One of the strong contributions, which atria can make to advantages in building, is in allowing the use of daylight. This research is to develop nomographs and to evaluate the daylight performances of toplit atria with louvers. For this purpose, the evaluation models of toplit atria with well indexes of 0.5, 1.0 or 2.0 have been selected through the field surveys of atrium buildings in Seoul area. Also, weather data for solar irradiance and luminous efficacy were gathered from the recently conducted previous researches. The computer simulations were performed under clear sky conditions, using the ADELINE program, and various daylight performances were analyzed by the daylight illumination ratio. Analyzing the simulation results, solar altitude, solar azimuth, and louver angle and louver reflectance were found to be important factors affecting the daylight performance of toplit atria. Using these variables, regression equations have been formulated, and the nomographs, which may predict the daylight performances of toplit atria with louvers, were developed. The developed nomographs were validated through comparing the results of nomograph predictions to the results of scale-model experiments.

  • It is prevalent to research on the energy saving systems using daylight. Daylight responsive dimming systems are to automatically control lighting output by available daylight for maintaining target illuminance on the workplane. The system application is not popular because of blocked daylight by shading systems. Automated roller shading systems automatically control shade height by sun position and sky conditions. Both daylight responsive dimming systems and automated roller shading systems should be integrated for energy savings and visual luminous environment. In this research, software are developed and integrated for control of integrated systems.

  • Daylight provides residents with good visual environment. And available daylight in inside provides positive influence on psychological and physiological aspects. Also, sunlight can be converted directly into electricity using PV(photovoltaic) power generation. This study was to analyze characteristics of daylight distributions, calculate an amount of solar radiation and a PV power generation on the building facade using Radiance and Ecotect simulation programs. Ultimately, the purpose of this study is to verify the applicability of Blind PV systems.

  • Available daylight in inside offers comfortable view environment, and psychological and physical advantages to people in the room. But, it has a problem of an excessive direct sunlight. This study calculated daylight responsive dimming control slope by Roller Shade system with Mock-up test. With three 1/2 scale Mock-up rooms, we performed a test for calculation of daylight responsive dimming control slope in different shade height of each room through the different height of roller shade systems. This research will be used as a fundamental study for automated roller shade systems.

  • Daylight is one of the most critical factors that can be utilized for architectural spaces; compared to artificial light, it is a sustainable energy source without the cost of electric energy and offers a more natural feeling to the visitors in the building. To make the space quality better, many architects have tried to predict daylight performance during the design process. The aim of this study is to evaluate the daylight transmittance efficacies of the five shapes - Flat, Pyramid, Dome, Barrel Vault. Ridge - of skylights. The results of this study indicated that the differences of transmittance efficiency among various skylights were less than 4.6% except the flat shaped skylight. Therefore, this study shows that there were no big differences of the daylight transmittance efficacies among the shapes of skylights.

  • Available daylight in inside offers comfortable view environment, and psychological and physical advantages to people in a room. Architecture design has need of daylight prediction for reflection efficiently daylight. But it is difficult to predict the illuminance values in daylight system. Using various lighting simulation software is easy and simple, but we can find different results under the same conditions. This study compares with illuminance values from simulation (Lightscape 3.2, RELUX 2007, RADIANCE 3.9) and Mock-up experiment with the same space and parameter of daylight (location of space and window, date, time and sky condition).
