  • Most data scrambling schemes generate pure random codes. Unlike these schemes, we propose a variable density scrambling scheme (VDSC) that differentiates densities of generated codes. First, we describe conditions and methods to translate plain codes to cipher codes with different densities. Then we apply the VDSC to flash memory such that preferred cell states occur more than others. To restrain error rate, specifically, the VDSC controls code densities so as to increase the ratio of center state among all possible cell states in flash memory. Scrambling experiments of data in Windows and Linux systems show that the VDSC increases the ratio of cells having near-center states in flash memory.

  • In this paper, we investigate possible scrambling methods for the JPEG(Joint Photographic Export Group) still image compression standard. In particular, we compare the conventional line rotation and line permutation methods to the DCT block scrambling in terms of the number of bits to be increased and the easiness of buffer control. Computer simulation results show that the DCT block scrambling method is suitable for both data security and buffer control in one-chip JPEG applications.

  • With the advance of multimedia technology, multimedia sharing among multiple devices has become the main issue. This allows users to expect the peer-to-peer distribution of unprotected and protected contents over public network. Inevitably, this situation has caused an incredible piracy activity and Web sites have begun to provide copyrighted A/V data for free. In order to, protect the contents from illegal attacks and distribution, digital right management (DRM) is required. In this paper, we present the minimal cost scrambling scheme for securing the copyrighted multimedia using the data encryption standard (DES) encryption technique. Experimental results indicate that the proposed scrambling techniques achieve a very good compromise between several desirable properties such as speed, security, and file size.

  • In this paper, optical image encryption using integral imaging and pixel-scrambling technologies is proposed. In the encryption process, we use pixel scrambling to change the order of subsections into which the cover image is divided, and the utilize the integral imaging scheme to obtain the elemental image from the scrambled image. In order to achieve higher security, we reuse pixel scrambling to the elemental image. In the decryption process, we employ optical integral imaging reconstruction technique and inverse pixel scrambling methode. Computer simulation results prove the feasibility of the proposed method and robustness against data loss and noise.

  • For the DC-free encoding of source data, the Guided Scrambling (GS) technique is widely used as multi-mode coding in the optical data storage system. For DC-suppression GS coding in the holographic data storage system, the conservative array and balanced coding criteria are proposed. In this paper, equivalent integer programming models are developed to determine the optimal control bits for the minimum digital sum value (MDSV), conservative array, and balanced coding criteria. Using the proposed integer programming models, we compare the performance of GS encoding for the various combination of control bit/array sizes and scrambling polynomials.

  • In Guided Scrambling (GS) encoding for the holographic storage, after scrambling augmented source word into codeword, the best codeword satisfying modulation constraint is determined. Modulation constraints considered in this paper are strength which is the minimum number of transition between '0' and '1' in each row and column of codeword array and the symbol balancedness of codeword array. In this paper, we show that GS encoding procedure can be formulated as an integer programming model and develop a fast neighborhood search heuristic for fast computation of control bits. In the simulation, we compared the performance of heuristic algorithm with the integer programming model for various array and control bit size combinations.

  • The paper studied possibility of improvement of efficient of data processing in the line coder when Hangul syllables in Unicode system is used for the source code. The scrambling in the line coder is to solve the problem happened due to the source code. The study is based on the HDB-3 scrambling method in ITU-T standards that is applied to AMI line coder. The referred data of Hangul syllables and its use frequency which are required to analysis was used the data extracted from the source data of the National Korean Language Institute. According to the analysis, the average 24% scrambling was generated in source code of Hangul syllables in Unicode system. When the referred Hangul syllables was applied to Unicode system, the average 27% scrambling was producted. Total 8,924ea Hangul syllables in 11,172ea Hangul syllables in Unicode system were not scrambled. Therefore the referred Hangul syllables 1,540ea were accepted in the unscrambled code areas. As a result, the existing Unicode Hangul syllable codes can't prevent the scrambling, but it is possible to completely remove the 27% scrambling with new source coding system. And then, it can be improved the data processing efficient upto minimum 27% in line coder by software in presentation layer instead of physical layer.

  • The amount of digitalized contents has been rapidly increased, but the main distribution channel of them is Internet which is easily accessible. Therefore 'security' necessarily arises as one of the most important issues and the method of protecting contents becomes a major research topic as much as data coding techniques. In recent years, many developers have studied on techniques that allow only authorized person to access contents. Among them the scrambling method is one of well-known security techniques. In this paper, we propose a simple and effective digital video scrambling method which utilizes the intra block properties of a recent video coding technique, H.264. Since intra prediction modes are adopted in H.264 standard, it is easy to scramble a video sequence with modification of the intra prediction modes. In addition to its simplicity, the proposed method does not increase bit rate after scrambling. The inter blocks are also distorted by scrambling intra blocks only. This paper introduces a new digital video scrambling method and verifies its effectiveness through simulation.

  • Chaos communication system can improve a system security due to characteristics of non-periodic, non-predictability, broadband signal and easy implementation. Also, chaos signal is sensitive to initial conditions of chaos map. By these reasons, security of chaos communication system is superior to digital communication system. BER performance of COOK modulation system is better than other chaos modulation systems, even if COOK modulation system uses an asynchronous receiver. However, security and safety of COOK modulated signal are worse than other chaos modulation systems, because information bits can be easily predicted from COOK modulated signal. In this paper, for security improvement of COOK modulated signal, we propose a novel Scrambling COOK modulation system by applying the scrambling method. Conventional COOK modulated signal can be predicted, because chaos signal is generated when data is only 1. However, proposed system cannot be predicted, because chaos signal is generated when data is 0 or 1. Therefore, security and safety of transmitted signal in scrambling COOK modulation system is superior to conventional COOK modulation system.

  • A digital hologram generated by a computer calculation (computer-generated hologram or capture using charge-coupled device [CCD] camera) is one of the most expensive types of content, and its usage is expanding. Thus, it is highly necessary to protect the ownership of digital holograms. This paper presents an efficient visual security scheme for holographic image reconstruction with a low scrambling cost. Most recent studies on optical security concentrate their focus on security authentication using optical characteristics. However, in this paper, we propose an efficient scrambling method to protect a digital hologram. Therefore, we introduce in this paper several scrambling attempts in both the spatial domain and frequency domain on the basis of the results of analyzing the properties of the coefficients in each domain. To effectively hide the image information, 1/4, 1/256, and 1/16,384 of the original digital hologram needs to be scrambled for the spatial-domain scheme, Fresnel-domain scheme, and discrete cosine transform-domain scheme, respectively. The encryption schemes and the analyses in this paper can be expected to be useful in the research on encryption and other works on digital holograms.
