  • A mathematical model of the commercial harvest of Palmaria palmata (Dulse) is presented based on a logistic model and field data collected on Digby Neck, Nova Scotia from 14 harvested shores during May to August, 2010. Field observations used to estimate model parameters included cover of Dulse before and after harvest from Dulse dominated boulders for which surface area was estimated, and from which fresh biomass of harvested Dulse was weighed. Over all the surveys the average harvest fraction was about 50%, and the total resource was about $1,600g\;m^{-2}$. With growth rates in excess of 4% per day and a 50% harvest of the standing crop each month, the model suggests that the Dulse resource is sustainable at current harvest levels.

  • Recently, higher speed optical disk drives including computer CD-ROM drives tend to be increasingly demanded to read or write the enormous volume of digital data. To this end, both structure and controller designs of the optical pick-ups should be improved concurrently. In this paper, the pick-up during auto-focusing motion is mathematically modelled retaining all its peculiar features. The model turns out a linear time invariant system suitable for a control design namedH${\infty}$ which ensures robust stability in the presence of system uncertainties. Numerical simulations are performed to demonstrate the robustness with appropriate performance specifications being satisfied. In addition, as the implementation issue of it, procedures of temporal discretization as well as model reduction of the controller are also addressed.

  • Uplift response of symmetrical circular anchor plates has been evaluated in physical model tests and numerical simulation using Plaxis. The behavior of circular anchor plates during uplift test was studied by experimental data and finite element analyses in loose sand. Validation of the analysis model was also carried out with 50 mm, 75 mm and 100 mm diameter of circular plates in loose sand. Agreement between the uplift responses from the physical model tests and finite element modeling using PLAXIS 2D, based on 100 mm computed maximum displacements was excellent for circular anchor plates. Numerical analysis using circular anchor plates was conducted based on hardening soil model (HSM). The research has showed that the finite element results gives higher than the experimental findings in the loose sand.

  • Tubular construction is widely used in a range of civil and structural engineering applications. To date, the principal product range has comprised square, rectangular and circular hollow sections. However, hot-rolled structural steel elliptical hollow sections have been recently introduced and offer further choice to engineers and architects. Currently though, a lack of fundamental structural performance data and verified structural design guidance is inhibiting uptake. Of fundamental importance to structural metallic design is the concept of cross-section classification. This paper proposes slenderness parameters and a system of cross-section classification limits for elliptical hollow sections, developed on the basis of laboratory tests and numerical simulations. Four classes of cross-sections, namely Class 1 to 4 have been defined with limiting slenderness values. For the special case of elliptical hollow sections with an aspect ratio of unity, consistency with the slenderness limits for circular hollow sections in Eurocode 3 has been achieved. The proposed system of cross-section classification underpins the development of further design guidance for elliptical hollow sections.

  • Intermolecular interaction energies and conformer geometries of the hydrogen bonded acrylamide dimers have been studied by using the second-order Møller-Plesset (MP2) perturbation theory and the density functional theory (DFT) with 17 density functionals. Dunning's correlation consistent basis sets (up to aug-cc-pVTZ) have been used to study the basis set effects. The DFT calculated interaction energies are compared to the reference energy data calculated by the MP2 method and the coupled cluster method at the complete basis set (CCSD(T)/CBS) limit in order to determine the relative performance of the studied density functionals. Overall, dispersion-energy-corrected density functionals outperform uncorrected ones. The ${\omega}B97XD$ density functional is particularly effective in terms of both accuracy and computational cost in estimating the reference energy values using small basis sets and is highly recommended for similar calculations for larger systems.

  • In this paper the model of the MQE-IMD-based neural trigger circuit is improved, where MQW-IMD is a new semiconductor device proposed and experimentally demonstrated by the author for the hardware implementation of the neural networks. The electron energy of AlXGa1-XAsbarrier is calculated by Ensemble Monte Carlo simulation according to the variation of Al mole fraction x and the applied electric field, whtich had been roughly estimated in the previous paper because of the difficulty to get the data. And in the consideration of the tunneling of the confined electrons within the quantum well the accuracy of the impact ionization rate is enhaned. Finally, the dependance of the frequency of pulse-train on the number of quantum wells can be calculated by modelling the effect of the distance of the induced positive charge from the cathode on the electric field at the cathode.

  • Most of speech recognition systems are using Hidden Markov Model based on statistical modelling frequently. In Korean isolated telephone digit speech recognition, high recognition rate is gained by using HMM if many training data are given. But in Korean continuous telephone digit speech recognition, HMM has some limitations for similar telephone digits. In this paper we suggest a way to overcome some limitations of HMM by using discriminant learning based on minimal classification error criterion in Korean continuous telephone digit speech recognition. The experimental results show our method has high recognition rate for similar telephone digits.

  • This paper presents database technique for an computer-integrated structural design system of buildings. Network database designed to support all the processes of structural design, such as, planning, modelling, analysis, member design and redesign processes etc. stores all information from user input and system results effectively and so provides centeral communication area between applications. The user interface wi th interactive and batch modes plays roles of building modeler including conventional pre-processor and post-processor. The concepts of 'Planar Surface Modeling' and 'Geometry Zoning' are defined for easy construction of building model. The concept presented in this paper will save the time and memory required for model generation and contribute to data consistency, thus leave a designer more time actually performing the analyses and interpreting the results. The formulation of automating the process of bulilding model ins and structural analysis is the key to study.

  • The performance of smartphone applications are usually constrained in user interactions due to resource limitation and it promises great opportunities to improve the performance by exploring the smartphone built-in and embedded sensing techniques. However, heterogeneity in techniques, semantic gap between sensor data and usable context, and complexity of contextual situations keep the techniques from seamless integration. Relevant studies mainly focus on feasibility demonstration of emerging sensing techniques, which rarely address both general architectures and comprehensive technical solutions. Based on a proposed functional model, this investigation provides a general architecture to deal with the dynamic context for context-aware automation and decision support. In order to take advantage of the built-in sensors to improve the performance of mobile applications, an ontology-based method is employed for context modelling, linguistic variables are used for heterogeneous context presentation, and semantic distance-based rule matching is employed to customise functions to the contextual situations. A case study on mobile application authentication is conducted with smartphone built-in hardware modules. The results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed solutions and their effectiveness in improving operational efficiency.

  • In this paper, we suggest quasi-likelihood estimation (QLE) method and its robust version in estimating spatial dependence modelled through variogram used for spatial data modelling. We compare the statistical characteristics of the estimators with other popular least squares estimators of parameters for variogram model by simulation study. The QLE method for estimating spatial dependence has the advantages that it does not need the concept of lags commonly required for least squares estimation methods as well as its statistical superiority. The QLE method also shows the statistical superiority to the other methods for the tested Gaussian and non-Gaussian spatial processes.
