아웃리거 댐퍼 시스템의 고층건물 풍응답 진동제어 성능 평가 (Evaluation of Vibration Control Performance of Outrigger Damper System for Tall Buildings Subjected to Wind Loads)

  • Recently, the concept of damped outrigger system has been proposed for tall buildings. But, structural characteristics and design method of this system were not sufficiently investigated to date. In this study, the dynamic response control performance of outrigger damper has been analyzed. To this end, a simplified analysis model with outrigger damper system has been developed. An artificial wind of 1000 seconds with 0.1 second time steps was generated by using a Kaimal spectrum. Analysis results show that outrigger damper system is more effective up to 20-23% in the control of dynamic response compared to conventional outrigger system. The increase of outrigger damper capacity usually results in the improved control performance. However, it is necessary to select that proper stiffness and damping values of the outrigger damper system because, the outrigger damper having large capacity is result in heavy financial burden.

동흡진기를 사용한 원전 배관계 내진성능 상향에 대한 연구 (A Study on Seismic Performance Improvement of Nuclear Piping System through Dynamic Absorber)

  • In this study, the dynamic absorber and the damper are applied to improve the seismic performance of the piping system, and their quantitative effects on the piping system performance are examined. For this purpose, the response performances of piping system applied with the dynamic absorber/damper are compared with those of the original piping system. Firstly, the frequency response analyses of the piping system with the presence or the absence of dynamic absorber/damper are performed and these results are compared. It has been shown that the maximum acceleration response per the frequency of the piping system is considerably reduced by installing the dynamic absorber and the damper. Secondly, the seismic responses of the piping systems with and without dynamic absorber/damper are compared. As a result of the numerical analyses, it is confirmed that key responses are reduced by 17%-63% due to the installation of the dynamic absorber and damper. Finally, as a result of the seismic performance evaluation, it is confirmed that the HCLPF (High Confidence of Low Probability of Failure) seismic performances are increased by 1.22 to 2.70 times with respect to the failure modes with an aid of the dynamic absorber and damper.

Optimization of base-isolated structure with negative stiffness tuned inerter damper targeting seismic response reduction

  • In this study, we investigate the use of a negative stiffness tuned inerter damper system to improve the performance of a base-isolated structure. The negative stiffness tuned inerter damper system consists of a tuned inerter damper connected in parallel with a negative stiffness element. To find the optimal parameters for the base-isolated structure with negative stiffness tuned inerter damper system, we develop an optimization method based on performance criteria. The objective of the optimization is to minimize the superstructure acceleration response ratio, while ensuring that the base displacement response ratio remains below a specified target value. We evaluate the proposed method by conducting numerical analyses on an eight-story building. The structure is modeled using both a simplified 3-degree-of-freedom system and a more detailed story-by-story shear-beam model. Lastly, a comparative analysis using time history analysis is performed to compare the performance of the base-isolated structure with negative stiffness tuned inerter damper system with that of the base-isolated structure and base-isolated structure with tuned inerter damper systems. The results obtained from the comparative analysis show that the negative stiffness tuned inerter damper system outperforms the tuned inerter damper system in reducing the dynamic seismic response of the base-isolated structure. Overall, this study demonstrates that the negative stiffness tuned inerter damper system can effectively enhance the performance of base-isolated structures, providing improved seismic response reduction compared to other systems.

Fully coupled multi-hull/mooring/riser/hawser time domain simulation of TLP-TAD system with MR damper

  • Reducing hawser line tensions and dynamic responses to a certain level is of paramount importance as the hawser lines provide important structural linkage between 2 body TLP-TAD system. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate how MR Damper can be utilized to achieve this. Hydrodynamic coefficients and wave forces for two bodies including second-order effects are obtained by 3D diffraction/radiation panel program by potential theory. Then, multi-hull-riser-mooring-hawser fully-coupled time-domain dynamic simulation program is applied to solve the complex two-body system's dynamics with the Magneto-Rheological (MR) Damper modeled on one end of hawser. Since the damping level of MR Damper can be changed by inputting different electric currents, various simulations are conducted for various electric currents. The results show the reductions in maximum hawser tensions with MR Damper even for passive control cases. The results also show that the hawser tensions and MR Damper strokes are affected not only by input electric currents but also by initial mooring design. Further optimization of hawser design with MR Damper can be done by active MR-Damper control with changing electric currents, which is the subject of the next study.

Semi-active control of seismic response of a building using MR fluid-based tuned mass damper

  • While tuned mass dampers are found to be effective in suppressing vibration in a tall building, integrating it with a semi-active control system enables it to perform more efficiently. In this paper a forty-story tall steel-frame building designed according to the Canadian standard, has been studied with and without semi-active and passive tuned mass dampers. The building is assumed to be located in the Vancouver, Canada. A magneto-rheological fluid based semi-active tuned mass damper has been optimally designed to suppress the vibration of the structure against seismic excitation, and an appropriate control procedure has been implemented to optimize the building's semi-active tuned mass system to reduce the seismic response. Furthermore, the control system parameters have been adjusted to yield the maximum reduction in the structural displacements at different floor levels. The response of the structure has been studied with a variety of ground motions with low, medium and high frequency contents to investigate the performance of the semi-active tuned mass damper in comparison to that of a passive tuned mass damper. It has been shown that the semi-active control system modifies structural response more effectively than the classic passive tuned mass damper in both mitigation of maximum displacement and reduction of the settling time of the building.

조향계 유압 시미댐퍼의 성능해석 프로그램 개발 (Development of Performance Analysis Program for a Hydraulic Shimmy Damper of Steering System)

  • A program to analyze the performance characteristics of a hydraulic shimmy damper for automotive steering system was developed in this study. Dimensionless mathematical equations of the dynamics of shimmy damper for forward and reverse fluid flows were derived respectively and incorporated into the Simulink models. The program was validated by comparing the results of simulation and experiments for various frequencies of upstream ripple pressures into the damper. Low-pass filter characteristics of the shimmy damper at reverse flow was demonstrated which means that the shimmy damper could alleviate the high speed ripple pressures induced by the unbalance oscillation of tire in vehicle driving. The parameter sensitivity analysis was also conducted to identify the dominant parameters for the damper performance.

  • Recently the maximum speed becomes the most important performance in high speed train. But the speed up of train will not give the passenger good riding comfort. The semi-active suspension system by using variable damper with hydraulic solenoid valve is used to solve this problem. But the variable damper with hydraulic solenoid valve requires tank for supplying fluid. In this study, the MR(Magneto Rheological) damper was considered instead of hydraulic variable damper in order to improve riding comfort. Dynamic simulation was conducted for semi-active suspension system with MR damper was made by using Matlab-Simulink S/W. According to control strategy of MR damper for improving ride comfort in railway vehicle, The riding comfort of the railway vehicle with semi-active suspension system was analyzed and compared with conventional suspension system by using the program.

  • For the dynamic behavior evaluation of a semi-active vibration control system, it is very important to use an accurate mathematical model for the hydraulic damper applied to the control system. In this study, a mathematical model for a symmetric type hydraulic damper was suggested. In this model, the effects of gas volume and oil temperature variation on the bulk modulus of oil were considered. The dynamic behavior of the damper was investigated by experiments and simulations. It was confirmed that the pressure variation, damping force, and mean pressure variation could be estimated with comparatively good precision by the suggested mathematical model. Moreover, it was shown that excessive pressure rise can be generated by the oil expansion due to the heat energy transformed from the exciting energy of the damper for a short period of the damper operation.

  • In general, crankshafts which are used in internal combustion reciprocating engines are subjects to high torsional vibration. Therefore, a damper is often used to minimize the torsional vibration in reciprocating engines. In this paper, in order to investigate damping performance of viscous damper, the real effective viscosity and complex damping coefficient of silicone oil, and the effective inertia moment of inertia ring are calculated considering the relative motion between damper casing and inertia ring. Based on these results multi-cylinder shaft is modeled into equivalent 2-degree of freedom system and optimum condition is estimated by calculating the amplification factor of viscous damper. Also the test damper was manufactured according to the result of theoretical investigation, the performance and durability was ascertained through experimental examination.

  • In this study, a restoring viscous damper is introduced for X-type damper system which is designed for the seismic response control of large spatial structures. A nonlinear numerical model for its behavior is developed using the result of dynamic loading tests. The X-type damper system is composed of restoring viscous dampers and connecting devices such as adjustable wire bracing, where the damping capacity of the system is controllable by changing the number of the dampers. The restoring viscous damper is devised to exert main damping force in tension direction, which is effective to prevent the buckling of bracing subjected to compressive axial force. To evaluate the performance of the proposed damper, dynamic cyclic loading tests are performed by using manufactured dampers at full scale. In order to construct the numerical model of the damper system, its model parameters are first identified using a nonlinear curve fitting method with the test data. The numerical simulations are then performed to validate the accuracy of the numerical model in comparison with the experimental test results. It is expected that the proposed system is effectively applicable to various building structures for seismic performance enhancement.
