In this study, the fracture behaviour of DCB(double cantilever beam) specimen with aluminum foam composite materials is analyzed by simulation. By comparing the analysis results with two models of 25 mm and 40 mm, the model with thickness of 25 mm is weaker than 40 mm at fatigue life and damage. Two models are unfavorable at 'SAE Transmission' in case of nonuniform fatigue load and rainflow matrices are weakest at 'SAE Bracket history'. In damage matrices, the model with 25 mm of thickness is weaker than the model with 40 mm of thickness but the model with 40 mm of thickness relative damage possibility is higher than in case of 25 mm. As two models are safest at 'SAE Transmission', the relative damage becomes the lowest value from 1.1 to 1.8 %. The mechanical property can be investigated by applying these analyses results with the real composite structure bonded with adhesive and analyzing fracture behaviour.
Traffic noise cost can be assessed either by the damage cost approach or by the avoidance cost method. This paper provides an overview of pertinent studies of these two approaches and shows that the damage cost approach is more universal and reliable than the avoidance cost counterpart. This study then investigated three sub-components to address the damage cost framework. First of all, unit value per person exposed to noise per year was calculated. Secondly, the area exposed to noise was determined using noise prediction equation. Thirdly, the number of people affected by noise was computed by multiplying the number of people exposed to noise with the percentage of people affected by noise. This paper also suggested a simplified equation that represents the relationship between damage costs and noise levels. Finally, the benefits of noise reduction derived from the damage cost method and those from the avoidance cost approach were compared and discussed.
As one of the most important parameters in structural health monitoring, structural frequency has many advantages, such as convenient to be measured, high precision, and insensitive to noise. In addition, frequency-change-ratio based method had been validated to have the ability to identify the damage occurrence and location. However, building a precise enough finite elemental model (FEM) for the test structure is still a huge challenge for this frequency-change-ratio based damage detection technique. In order to overcome this disadvantage and extend the application for frequencies in structural health monitoring area, a novel method was developed in this paper by combining the cross-model cross-mode (CMCM) model updating algorithm with the frequency-change-ratio based method. At first, assuming the physical parameters, including the element mass and stiffness, of the test structure had been known with a certain value, then an initial to-be-updated model with these assumed parameters was constructed according to the typical mass and stiffness distribution characteristic of shear buildings. After that, this to-be-updated model was updated using CMCM algorithm by combining with the measured frequencies of the actual structure when no damage was introduced. Thus, this updated model was regarded as a representation of the FEM model of actual structure, because their modal information were almost the same. Finally, based on this updated model, the frequency-change-ratio based method can be further proceed to realize the damage detection and localization. In order to verify the effectiveness of the developed method, a four-level shear building was numerically simulated and two actual shear structures, including a three-level shear model and an eight-story frame, were experimentally test in laboratory, and all the test results demonstrate that the developed method can identify the structural damage occurrence and location effectively, even only very limited modal frequencies of the test structure were provided.

Due to the importance of soil reinforcement using geotextiles in geotechnical engineering, study and investigation into long-term performance, design life and survivability of geotextiles, especially due to installation damage are necessary and will affect their economy. During installation, spreading and compaction of backfill materials, geotextiles may encounter severe stresses which can be higher than they will experience in-service. This paper aims to investigate the installation damage of geotextiles, in order to obtain a good approach to the estimation of the material's strength reduction factor. A series of full-scale tests were conducted to simulate the installation process. The study includes four deliberately poorly-graded backfill materials, two kinds of subgrades with different CBR values, three nonwoven needle-punched geotextiles of classes 1, 2 and 3 (according to AASHTO M288-08) and two different relative densities for the backfill materials. Also, to determine how well or how poorly the geotextiles tolerated the imposed construction stresses, grab tensile tests and visual inspections were carried out on geotextile specimens (before and after installation). Visual inspections of the geotextiles revealed sedimentation of fine-grained particles in all specimens and local stretching of geotextiles by larger soil particles which exerted some damage. A regression model is proposed to reliably predict the installation damage reduction factor. The results, obtained by grab tensile tests and via the proposed models, indicated that the strength reduction factor due to installation damage was reduced as the median grain size and relative density of the backfill decreases, stress transferred to the geotextiles' level decreases and as the as-received grab tensile strength of geotextile and the subgrades' CBR value increase.

The Puebla-Morelos Earthquake (Mw 7.1) occurred in Mexico in 2017 causing 44 buildings to collapse in Mexico City. This work evaluates the non-linear response of a 6-story reinforced concrete (RC) frame prototype model with masonry infill walls on upper floors. The prototype model was designed using provisions prescribed before 1985 and was subjected to seismic excitations recorded during the earthquakes of 1985 and 2017 in different places in Mexico City. The building response was assessed through a damage index (DI) that considers low-cycle fatigue of the steel reinforcement in columns of the first floor, where the steel was modeled including buckling as was observed in cases after the 2017 earthquake. Isocurves were generated with 72 seismic records in Mexico City representing the level of iso-demand on the structure. These isocurves were compared with the location of 16 collapsed (first-floor column failure) building cases consistent with the prototype model. The isocurves for a value greater than 1 demarcate the location where fatigue failure was expected, which is consistent with the location of 2 of the 16 cases studied. However, a slight increase in axial load (5%) or decrease in column cross-section (5%) had a significant detrimental effect on the cumulated damage, increasing the intensity of the isocurves and achieving congruence with 9 of the 16 cases, and having the other 7 cases less than 2 km away. Including column special detailing (tight stirrup spacing and confined concrete) was the variable with the greatest impact to control the cumulated damage, which was consistent with the absence of severe damage in buildings built in the 70s and 80s.

Construction of a tunnel induces rock masses damage around the tunnel. The degree of damage produced on rock masses will affect on the mechanical and hydraulic behaviors of the rock masses. In this paper, P wave velocity measured by cross-hole test was used to assess rock masses damage around the test tunnel. Initiation of source signal was carried out using mechanical impact at the source installed borehole. In consequence, the generated P wave signal was low noise and apparent wave form, which allows accurate pick-up of first arrival time. From the test, the region where rock damage is expected shows relatively low P wave velocity. In addition, with multiple points of P wave velocity measurement along each cross-hole, two dimensional P wave tomography was obtained. The tomography provides apparent view of the rock damage behind the tunnel. The measured P wave velocity was correlated with features of rock masses, porosity and Q value.
Recently, the damage by fresh flood increases in Gangwon-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do of the north-eastern area of Korea. Even though the recent pattern of rain fall keeps changing, there is no strategy to mitigate damage by disaster. For the appropriate measure and policy for decreasing damage, an index for vulnerability is necessary to provide evidence of local climate change. The present work analyzes the flooding damage cost during the past 20 years. During 80's, the southern area of Korea was seriously damaged by over-floods on the agricultural ground. After that time, the loss and damage has decreased in the southern area but the middle part has shown slight but distinct increases of damage. The absolute coast of damage in the northern part has kept constant. However, the relative regional damage to the total country damage has kept increasing over 20 years in the same area. The surface area of floods is strongly correlated with the regional damage cost in the southern part but the north-eastern part has weak correlation between flooded area and cost. It implies that the recent damage in the north-eastern mountain area was not caused by flood itself but the other factors such as avalanches. The present work expects that the damage cost can be a good proxy value for index for climate change impact assessment.

In this study, real-time damage evaluation of cable-stayed bridges was conducted for cable damage. ICP type acceleration sensors were used for real-time damage assessment of cable-stayed bridges, and Kinetic Energy Optimization Techniques (KEOT) were used to select the optimal conditions for the location and quantity of the sensors. When a structure vibrates by an external force, KEOT measures the value of the maximum deformation energy to determine the optimal measurement position and the quantity of sensors. The damage conditions in this study were limited to cable breakage, and cable damage was caused by dividing the cable-stayed bridge into four sections. Through FE structural analysis, a virtual model similar to the actual model was created in the real-time damage evaluation method of cable. After applying random oscillation waves to the generated virtual model and model structure, cable damage to the model structure was caused. The two data were compared by defining the response output from the virtual model as a corruption-free response and the response measured from the real model as a corruption-free data. The degree of damage was evaluated by applying the data of the damaged cable-stayed bridge to the Improved Mahalanobis Distance (IMD) theory from the data of the intact cable-stayed bridge. As a result of evaluating damage with IMD theory, it was identified as a useful damage evaluation technology that can properly find damage by section in real time and apply it to real-time monitoring.
This paper describes the work and the results of the final Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA) for the Jordan Research and Training Reactor (JRTR). This final PSA was undertaken to assess the level of safety for the design of a research reactor and to evaluate whether it is probabilistically safe to operate and reliable to use. The scope of the PSA described here is a Level 1 PSA, which addresses the risks associated with core damage. After reviewing the documents and its conceptual design, nine typical initiating events were selected regarding internal events during the normal operation of the reactor. AIMS-PSA (Version 1.2c) was used for the accident quantification, and FTREX was used as the quantification engine. 1.0E-15/yr of the cutoff value was used to deliminate the non-effective Minimal Cut Sets (MCSs) when quantifying the JRTR PSA model. As a result, the final result indicates a point estimate of 2.02E-07/yr for the overall Core Damage Frequency (CDF) attributable to internal initiating events in the core damage state for the JRTR. A Loss of Primary Cooling System Flow (LOPCS) is the dominant contributor to the total CDF by a single initiating event (9.96E-08/yr), and provides 49.4% of the CDF. General Transients (GTRNs) are the second largest contributor, and provide 32.9% (6.65E-08/yr) of the CDF.

The effect of particle property on FOD(foreign object damage) and strength degradation in structural ceramics especially, silicon carbide was investigated by accelerating a spherical particle having different material and different size. The damage induced showed significant differences in their patterns with increase of impact velocity. Also percussion cone was formed at the back part of specimen when particle size became large and its impact velocity exceeded a critical value. The extent of ring cracks was linearly related to particle size, however the impact of steel particle produced larger ring cracks than that of SiC particle. Increasing impact velocity the residual strength showed different degradation behaviors according to particle and its size. In the region the impact site represents nearly elastic deformation behavior, the residual strength was dependent upon the depth of cone crack regardless of particle size. However in elastic- plastic deformation region, the radial cracks led to rapid drop in residual strength.
