Popillia quqdriguttata is a serious insect pest in Korean golf courses. The adult feeds on leaves of latifoliate trees and herbaceous plants while the larva feeds on roots of turfgrass. Thus, control of p. quadriguttata adults was tried with registered insecticides in golf courses in Korea. The insecticides used in the experiments were carbaryl + phosalone WP, chlorpyrifos + diflubenzuron WP, chlorpyrifos-methyl EC, deltamethrin EC, etofenprox WP, etofenprox + diazinon WP, etofenprox + tebufenozide EC, fenitrothion EC, imidacloprid SC, pyraclofos WP, and tralomethrin EC. Mortalities of P. quadriguttata were over 95% in carbaryl + phosalone WP, chlorpyrifos + diflubenzuron WP, etofenprox + diazinon WP, and fenitrothion EC at petri dish and in greenhouse. In the field test, corrected mortality of P. quadriguttata was 95.2% and 80.9% in carbaryl 40% +phosalone 20% WP and fenitrothion 50% EC, respectively. Spreading agent enhanced toxic effect of used insecticides to p. quadriguttata adults except carbaryl + phosalon 20% EC. p. quadriguttata adult was firstly observed to feed on leaves of Canna generalis at the Yongwon golf club in Jinhae, Gyeongnam and Prunus ameriaca var. ansu and p. salicina at the Anyang Honest golf club in Gunpo, Cyeonggi. Therefure, host plants off quadriguftata became 29 species of 26 genera in 19 families. Zoysia matreila at the fairway and roughs of Anyang Benest golf club was damaged by p. quadriguttata larvae in Octomber, 2002 and not recovered in April, 2003. Damaged turfgrass became yellowish and wilted and that retarded recovering in the following spring.
The main objective of this study is the assessment of the ability of limestone mortars to resist to different chemical attacks. The ability of polypropylene (PP) fibres waste used as reinforcement of these concrete materials to enhance their durability is also studied. Crushed sand 0/2 mm which is a fine limestone residue obtained by the crushing of natural rocks in aggregates industry is used for the fabrication of the mortar. The fibres used, which are obtained from the waste of domestic plastic sweeps' fabrication, have a length of 20 mm and a diameter ranging between 0.38 and 0.51 mm. Two weight fibres contents are used, 0.5 and 1%. The durability tests carried out in this investigation included the water absorption by capillarity, the mass variation, the flexural and the compressive strengths of the mortar specimens immersed for 366 days in 5% sodium chloride, 5% magnesium sulphate and 5% sulphuric acid solutions. A mineralogical analysis by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and a visual inspection are used for a better examination of the quality of tested mortars and for better interpretation of their behaviour in different solutions. The results indicate that the reinforcement of limestone mortar by PP fibres waste is an excellent solution to improve its chemical resistance and durability. Moreover, the presence of PP fibres waste does not affect significantly the water absorption by capillarity of mortar nether its mass variation, when exposed to chloride and sulphate solutions. While in sulphuric acid, the mass loss is higher with the presence of PP fibres waste, especially after an exposure of 180 days. The results reveal that these fibres have a considerable effect of the flexural and the compressive behaviour of mortar especially in acid solution, where a reduction of strength loss is observed. The mineralogical analysis confirms the good behaviour of mortar immersed in sulphate and chloride solutions; and shows that more gypsum is formed in mortar exposed to acid environment causing its rapid degradation. The visual observation reveals that only samples exposed to acid attack during 366 days have showed a surface damage extending over a depth of approximately 300 ㎛.

To investigate the potential therapeutic value of a plant extract against amyloid ${\beta}-peptide-induced$ cell damage, we first screened extracts of 250 herbs, and finally selected a water extract of Spinacia oleracea for further study. This extractshowed the potential to inhibit the reactions of oxidants. We measured the angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity of the extract, and assessed the ability of the extract to protect neuronal cells from chemical-induced cell death. SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells were used in this assay. The extract exerted protective effects on $H_2O_2-induced$ cell death, when $H_2O_2$ was used at 100 M, 200 M, and 500 M (protection of 87%, 73%, and 58%, respectively). When 50 M of amyloid ${\beta}-peptide$ was added to the test cells, however, the extract had no protective effect on cell death. The extract inhibited ACE activity in a dose-dependent manner, and exhibited potent protection against the deleterious effects of $H_2O_2$. In sum, these results suggest that a water extract of Spinacia oleracea has the potential to afford protection against chemical-induced neuronal cell death, and the extract may be useful in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. The precise molecular mechanism of neuroprotection is under investigation.
Rheumatoid arthritis(RA) is a general, chronic, inflammatory and auto-immune disease and it can lead to joint edema, pain, stiffness which are caused by an inflammation in synovium covering our joints. Ulmus davidiana Planchon is a traditional herb used for the treatment on various inflammations, gastrointestinal trouble, ENT(ear, nose, and throat) disease, edema, cancer etc. and it works effectively on arthritis as well. In these study to search for the treatment efficacy of Ulmus davidiana Planchon in RA, I measure manifestation of cytokine gene in synoviocyte treated with Ulmus davidiana Planchon herbal acupuncture and in EL-4 cell, manifestation of cytokine gene cell related to T-cell. And after Ulmus davidiana Planchon herbal acupuncture treatment in Collagen induced arthritis(CIA) which has been known by a general model of RA, DBA mice, I observed foot thickness, general shape of synovium, early cytokine induce CIA and, generation and mutation of cytokine related to the control of T-cell specialization. It comes to conclusion as belows. 1. In synovium treated with Ulmus davidiana Planchon herbal acupuncture, there was the decrease in MIF mRNA does-dependently. Incase of CIA mice treated with Ulmus davidiana Planchon herbal acupuncture, there were the decrease in the damage in synovium and generation of the MIF which is related to induction of the early RA cytokine and IL-6 proinflammatory cytokine. 2. In case of EL-4 treated with Ulmus davidiana Planchon herbal acupuncture, there were decrease in the manifestation of the IL-2 mRNA, but the increase in the manifestation of the IL-4 does-dependently. 3. In the synovium of CIA mice treated with Ulmus davidiana Planchon herbal acupuncture, there were the decrease in generation of IL-2, IL-12 and CD-28, but the increase in generation of IL-4. These result suggest that Ulmus davidiana Planchon can block the process of the early RA by Inhibiting MIF activation, and mitigate Rheumatoid Arthritis by controlling Tcell specialization.
This experiment was conducted to verify whether or not chronic consumption of liquor prepared with Gastrodiae rhizoma exhibits antioxidant activity in brain tissue of rats. In the experiment, male Sprague-Dawley rats were given a liquid diet containing 6% (GA6), 18% (GA18), and 36% (GA36) of total calories as liquor for 6 weeks. The control rats (GAC6, GAC18, GAC36) received an isocaloric diet containing Soju instead of liquor. Caloric intakes and body weight gains of the 36% groups were significantly lower than those of the 6% and 18% groups (p<0.05), whereas alcohol intakes were significantly high in the 36% group (p<0.05). MDA contents of plasma and brain showed a positive correlation with alcohol intakes of the liquor and Soju consuming groups. Especially, contents of MDA were significantly higher in the 18% and 36% groups than the 6% group (p<0.05). SOD activities of serum and brain were significantly highest in the 18% group, and they tended to be higher in the liquor consuming groups compared with the control group. Catalase activity of serum showed no significant changes in the three groups consuming liquor, and catalase activity of brain tissue significantly increased in the GA18 group compared with the control group (p<0.05). In the liquor consuming groups, TAC level of serum tended to be higher in the GA36 group compared with the control group (p<0.05). However, TAC level of brain tissue showed no significant changes between the liquor consuming and control groups. These results show that as alcohol intake increased by chronic administration of liquor and Soju, brain tissue of rats was damaged more due to oxidative stress. However, a liquid diet containing 18% of total calories as liquor instead of Soju is expected to have a protective effect on brain damage induced by oxidative stress.

The present experiment was carried out to study the effects of light intensity on growth, survival, caudal fin shape, body composition, skin color and blood component of river puffer, Takifugu obscurus. Four light intensities (0, 500, 1,000, 2,000 lx) were tested in duplicates for 60 days. Specific growth rate (SGR), daily feeding rate (FR) and food coefficient (FC) were reduced following to the decrease of light intensity. However in survival rate there was not significantly different among groups. The damage extent of caudal fin was increased in more strong light intensity. In body composition, moisture and crude protein were only significantly difference according to light intensity. In body color, L and a were the highest in 0 lx. In blood analysis, the content of AST, ALT, GLU significantly increased in more powerful the intensity groups. It is concluded that the supplement of low light intensity (e.g. 0 lx) recommended for the commercial scale aquaculture of river puffer in land-based tank without growth and survival retardation.
Today's employees are facing various socio-emotional problems due to the lack of appropriate supports and intervention in the workplace. These problems, however, cause considerable stress and inflict fatal damage on the quality of the employees' lives. Thus, this study analyzed the negative effects of the employees' socio-emotional problems on their stress, depression, and a sense of self-esteem. As a result, the study has identified that the problems occurred widely in the work life area such as job-related problem, predicament of retirement, workplace violence, family life area such as family relationship, child education, crisis problem, and lastly culture and health related area. This study also found that the socio-emotional problems in the three areas were the main stressors after all and they once again negatively affected depression and a sense of self-esteem. However, the role of social support, which is known to have the buffering effect on depression and a sense of self-esteem, was not sufficiently proved. This strongly implies that traditional social supports necessarily have limitations to overcome employees' socio-emotional problems in hand and thus systematic intervention toward the troubled workers in the organizational level must be required.
To evaluate the effect of damaged bronchial epithelium on epithelial permeability and physiologic changes of the airway in patients with bronchial asthma, we measured the concentration of protein and albumin in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), the width of intercellular junction and bronchial hyperreactivity in 22 patients with bronchial asthma and 21 healthy subjects. The results were as follows: 1) The concentration of protein in BALF from patients with bronchial asthma was higher when compared with that of normal subjects ($237{\pm}182$ vs $113{\pm}78\;{\mu}g/mL$, p<0.05), and the concentration of albumin was also higher than that of normal subjects ($116{\pm}126$ vs $32{\pm}88\;{\mu}g/mL$, p<0.05). The ratio of the concentration of protein in BALF to that in serum was increased in patients with bronchial asthma when compared with that of normal subjects ($0.35{\pm}0.30$ vs $0.16{\pm}0.11%$, p<0.05). 2) The intercellular junction of bronchial epithelium was widened in 14 of 20 patients with bronchial asthma, in contrast, 5 of 14 normal subjects (p<0.05). The mean width of intercellular junction was greater when compared with that of normal subjects ($1.71{\pm}1.81$ vs $0.56{\pm}0.85\;{\mu}m$, p<0.05). The width was well correlated with the ratio of protein in BALF to that of serum (r=0.3226, p=0.047) when observed in 18 patients with bronchial asthma and 10 patients with normal subjects. 3) The bronchial hyperreactivity, expressed as $PC_{20}$, was inversely correlated with the concentration of protein in BALF (r=-0.3030, p=0.038) in when observed in 18 patients with bronchial asthma and 19 normal subjects. 4) The width of intercellular junction was well inversely correlated with $PC_{20}$ (r=-0.5006, p=0.002) when observed in 19 patients with bronchial asthma and 11 patients with normal subjects. In conclusion, increased permeability and the damage of bronchial epithelium may lead to change of bronchial hyperreactivity.
The study was designed to evaluate the response of sucralfate against the esophageal damage of rat by irradiation. Sixty Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 200-250 gm were divided into six groups including only sucralfate group, the group of 10 Gy or 20 Gy radiation alone, the groups of 10 Gy or 20 Gy radiation-sucralfate combination, and control. Each group was sacrificed at 3, 7, 14, and 28 days after irradiation. For evaluation of the radiation-induced esophageal lesions, there were examined the change of body weight, barium-esophagogram and histopathologic findings. Mean body weight gain was decreased in the groups with 10 Gy or 20 Gy radiation alone and 10 Gy or 20 Gy radiation-sucralfate combination as comparing with control (p=0.03, p=0.02, p=0.04, p=0.02), but there was no difference between the groups of 10 Gy or 20 Gy radiation alone and the groups of 10 Gy or 20 Gy radiation-sucralfate combination. In the 10 Gy and 20 Gy radiation alone groups, barium esophagograms showed diffuse narrowing and stiffness through the entire esophagus from 7 days after irradiation, but there was similar pattern of esophagograms between the groups of 10 Gy radiation-sucralfate combination and the control. Histopathoiogic lesion scores of 10 Gy and 20 Gy radiation groups were significantly higher than the control (p=0.03, p=0.008). In the 10 Gy radiation group, there were significantly higher lesion scores at 3 and 7 days after irradiation as comparing with those in the group of radiation-sucralfate combination (p=0.04, p=0.03). These results suggest that sucralfate might be played as a role of protection from acute radiation-induced esophagitis within the limit of tolerable radiation doses.
Present study aimed to investigate the radioprotective effects of propolis feeding on rat tissues damaged by X-ray irradiation. It was shown that the number of white blood cell in X-ray irradiated group supplemented with propolis increased as much to those of the control group and also the GOT activities among the blood components were decreased after propolis feeding. The mineral contents such as Mg, Fe, Ca, Mn, Cu, Mo, Ni, As in liver were increased as compared with those of the control group but maintained lower level than those of only irradiated groups, implying that the propolis feeding elevated the recovery capability of white blood cell effectively and propolis have a potential resistance to cell damage by X-ray. According to histological observations of the testis, intestine and liver tissues which are irradiated after feeding propolis, the numbers of damaged undifferentiated cells were decreased in testis and the shape of the goblet cells and inner and outer muscular layers in intestine were restored to the original state and the hepatocytes and interlobular veins were shown intact in liver, suggesting that propolis has a potential capacity to restore cell shapes or resist deformation of cell.
