  • Recently as algae phenomenon has been intensified, the need for additional dam flushing has been raised. To establish the more rational policies concerning the dam flushing, it is necessary to evaluate the dam flushing. This paper attempts to examine households' willingness to pay (WTP) for dam flushing by using a contingent valuation (CV). Especially, unlike other CV studies which used maximum likelihood estimation (MLE), this study employed Bayesian approach. This study surveyed a randomly selected sample of 1,000 households nation-widely, and asked respondents questions in person-to-person interviews about how they would be willing to pay for the additional dam flushing. Respondents overall accepted the contingent market and were willing to contribute a significant amount (1,909.4 won), on average, per household per year. The aggregate value amounts to approximately 35.7 billion won per year.

  • A high ammonia nitrogen ($NH_3-N$) concentration has been recursively observed every winter season in Geum River, which hindered chemical treatment processes at a water treatment plant. A flushing discharge from Daecheong Dam was often considered to dilute $NH_3-N$, but information on the quantitative effect of flushing on the downstream water quality was limited. In this study, the impact of a short-term reservoir flushing on the downstream water quality was investigated through field experiments and unsteady water quality modeling. On November 22, 2003, the reservoir discharge was increased from $30m^3/sec$ to $200m^3/sec$ within 6 hours for the purpose of the experiment. The results showed that flushing flow tends to reduce downstream $NH_3-N$ concentrations considerably, but the effectiveness was limited by flushing amount and time. An unsteady river water quality model was applied to simulate the changes of nitrogen concentrations in response to reservoir flushing. The model showed very good performance in predicting the travel time of flushing flow and the effect of flushing discharge on the reduction of downstream $NH_3-N$ concentrations at Maepo and Geumnam site, but a significant discrepancy was observed at Gongju site.

  • Reservoir sedimentation is one of the major concerns for sustainable reservoir operation. Since sediment concentration of the rivers in the Himalayan Mountain is very high, a proper sediment management scheme is necessary. This paper presents long-term reservoir sedimentation and sediment flushing based on the gate operation. Focused on the reservoir to be constructed for the Patrind hydropower project in Pakistan, 4 different flushing scenarios were proposed in this study to prevent successive sedimentation. By extending flushing period and by increasing the flushing discharge for 2 times, the flushing rate increases up to 53.2% and 43.6% in proportion to flushing period and discharge, respectively. Based on the simulation presented in this paper, it is expected to establish efficient sediment management plan to increase hydro power generation and sediment flushing simultaneously.

  • Most natural river reach are approximately balanced with respect to sediment inflow and outflow. Dam construction dramatically alters this balance, creating an impounded river reach characterized by extremely low flow velocities and efficient sediment trapping. The impounded reach will accumulate sediment and lose storage capacity until a balance is again achieved, which would normally occur after the impoundment has become "filled up" with sediment and can no longer provide water storage and other benefits. This paper aims to investigate the sediment removal process in dam reservoir using simultaneously pressure flushing operation and vibrator machine. The main objective of this study is to identify the effect of vibrator in flushing cone dimensions. To achieve the objectives of present study, laboratory test have conducted under different hydraulic conditions such as two bottom outlets with diameter equal to 2" and 3", five discharges 0.23, 0.53, 1.21, 1.53 and 2.1 lit/s and only one water depth above the center of bottom outlets. Using the vibrator machine mounted into the reservoir and close to the bottom outlet, different frequency e.g. 20, 35 and 50 HZ, have been introduced to the deposited sediment at the vicinity of outlet. The results indicate that the volume and width of flushing cone are strongly affected by frequency of vibrations. The results indicate that the volume and width of flushing cone are strongly affected by frequency of vibrations.

  • In this study, the characteristics of algae mitigation according to dam operation were quantitatively analyzed for Uiam Lake, where the Chuncheon Dam is located upstream of the main stream, Uiam Dam is located downstream, and Soyang Dam is located in the tributary stream. Nine dam operation scenarios were applied to the event of the summer of 2018 (at that time an algae alert occurred) using the EFDC model, which is capable of calculating three-dimensional hydrodynamics and water quality levels such as those associated with chlorophyll-a. The dam operation scenarios were set to generate a flushing effect via discharges in the form of pulse waves from the upstream dams and by lowering the water level at the downstream dam. At Uiam Lake, the flushing effect was different depending on the operation of the dam, and the amount of algae reduction at each point was different owing to topographic characteristics and the different base water temperatures from BukHan River and Soyang River. With regard to a point located on the left bank, it was predicted that the peak level of chlorophyll-a would be reduced by approximately 50 % or more upon pulsed discharge at 50 m3/s for three days at Soyang Dam. However, for the right bank, the amount of discharge from Soyang Dam had little effect on algae mitigation. Therefore, an appropriate dam operation could be effective for algae mitigation at specific points in the water body where large dams exist upstream and downstream, such as at Uiam Lake, in an emergency situation in which algal blooms rapidly.

  • I introduce the Flexible Dam Operation (FDO) and some of sediment control techniques In dams which are implemented as trials to avoid or reduce environmental impact of dams on the downstream reaches. The FDO is a dam management method to improve river environment in the downstream reaches by means of the flushing flow, the maintenance flow and so on utilizing a vacant portion of capacity for flood control without interrupting prime flood control function during the rainy/typhoon season. It Is suggested by the guideline of the FDO that EDO should be implemented regularly after the trial for about three years. The basic conception of the FDO is described here. The example of excavation of deposited sediments in check dams and placement of sand ana gravel immediately downstream of the dams and the example of coordinated sediment flushing are described as some of sediment control techniques in dams. Now they are at the stage of experiment and trial. Therefore, it is important to increase examples and establish the technical methodology and the environmental evaluation method for them.

  • This study had been performed to analyze flushing effects for instantaneous contaminants input with changing dam discharge in River. RMA-2 and RMA-4 models were applied to the downstream part of the Han River(from Jamsil submerged weir to Singok submerged one) The longitudinal dispersion coefficient of $50m^2/s$ was used. The four cases of dam discharges were selected as $500m^3/s,\;1000m^3/s,\;1500m^3/s$ and $2000m^3/s$, respectively, for 1 hour. The drought flow was fixed $200m^3/s$ in the Han River. The arrival time and the concentration of contaminant, the area of dispersion were estimated with RMA-4 model in the downstream part of the Han River. The arrival time which the concentration of contaminants become under 1ppm was analyzed with the stagnant and the instantaneous inflow contaminant at the section of Sungsan Bridge. The more increasing a dam discharge, the more short a dilution time of contaminant. The relation between the dam discharge and dilution time shows linearity. The instantaneous contaminant input was sensitively affected by the dam discharge than the stagnant contaminant one in the river. If it is tried to flush with a temporally increased dam discharge, it should be understood the range of overflowed contaminant dispersion from main channel to tributary channel.

  • Estuary is a transitional zone between river and ocean environment that receives the maritime and riverine influence simultaneously. Estuaries are the most productive habitats because their incoming water provides large quantities of nutrients. The Seomjin River estuary, located in the middle south of Korea, has no barrage and shows natural characteristic of estuary. However, due to dredging and reclamation the environment of the estuary has been changed significantly in the river mouth. In addition, increased freshwater intake in midstream of the Seomjin River results in salinity intrusion. In this paper salinity variation in downstream estuary of the Seomjin River has been simulated and tested using EFDC model. The results of simulation were compared with measured data collected at three points, Culture & Art Center, Sumjin Iron Bridge, and Mokdori, located at 9Km, 14Km, and 15.5Km respectively from downstream estuary. Based on the simulated results, the contribution of the flushing discharge has been evaluated in preventing the salinity intrusion by increasing the discharge flowrates released from the Juam dam.

  • In this study, changing characteristics of bed materials downstream of Daecheong Dam by flushing flow was investigated. Flushing flow affected the downstream environment in such a way that the mean diameter of bed material was increased and the standard deviation was decreased. The vertical sorting of bed materials composed of mixed sediment in the sediment box was observed. The surface layer was composed of gravels, and uniform sand material was buried below it. Relative fractions (Di/D50) of the bed material trapped in the box was nearly 1.0 for the bed material coarser than D$_{50}$ at Hyundo gauging station, and was between two values on the bed surface before and after the flushing flow at Bugang gauging station. Ratio of driving force to resisting force for each fraction ($\tau_i^*$) with the faction size maintained constant for the bed material coarser than D$_{50}$ at Hyundo station. At Bugang station, however, it was rapidly decreased. It means that pavement of the surface layer of bed material at Bugang station was developed, with the sediment particles moving downstream uniformly by flushing flow.

  • In this study, the reservoir sediment reduction methods for long-term operation are proposed by the analysis of both sediment deposit characteristics and sediment reduction effect by each method. To that end, a flowchart for sediment analysis in reservoir is established and sediment deposit is simulated by SMS-SED2D model. The sediment reduction methods which are sediment passing (sluicing), flushing, trapping, bypassing and mechanical removal are used. From the simulation results, the effective method for sediment reduction is operation which is coupled by both sediment passing with sand gate and sediment trapping with debris dam. And If sediment flushing will be used once a year after 50 years, conservation storage can be secured until 100 years after dam construction.
