Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of physical therapy intervention with local vibration on the physical function of patients with traumatic patella fractures. Methods: This study recruited 6 subjects who had suffered traumatic patella fractures. The study was conducted for an average of 12.8 weeks. Before the treatment (2 weeks post-surgery), they were evaluated using the numeric pain rating scale (NPRS), the Korean-version of the impact of event scale-revised (IES-R-K), pressure pain threshold (PPT), range of motion (ROM) of the knee joint, and the Korean knee injury and osteoarthritis outcome score (K-KOOS) and were reevaluated after 7 and 12 weeks, post-surgery. This study was conducted according to ORIF Patella Fracture Post-Operative Rehabilitation Protocol after applying local vibration. The protocol consists of Phases 1~5 and this study has been applied from phase 2. Results: A comparison of the performance of the participants before and after the intervention showed a decrease in NPRS (9.83±.41→4.83±.98), IES-R-K (68.67±2.73→23.83±2.40), and K-KOOS (Function, Daily living: 70.5±5.96→34.0±3.35, Function, Sports and Recreational activities: 22.83±2.32→10.77±1.37, Quality of Life: 19.33±7.33→7.33±.52) scores. And the ROM (Knee flexion: 30.0±4.47°→128.73±3.6°, Knee extension: -6.83±2.48°→-1.33±1.03°) and PPT (9.67±.52kg/cm2→22.44±2.33kg/cm2) scores increased. Conclusion: These results show that physical intervention with local vibration using a Blackroll® booster and head can help to improve pain, physical function, and psychological status. Also, it was possible to select interventions depending on the patient's condition and the desired goal, using physical intervention with the Blackroll® booster technique.
[Purpose] The aim of this review was to discuss the effects of vitamin D on physical performance and musculoskeletal injuries in athletes and provide information on the field applications of vitamin D. [Methods] A systematic review was conducted to identify studies on vitamin D in athletes that assessed serum vitamin D levels, vitamin D and physical performance, vitamin D and musculoskeletal injuries, and practical guidelines for supplementation of vitamin D. [Results] Several studies reported that a high proportion of athletes had vitamin D insufficiency or deficiency. Low serum levels of vitamin D in athletes were more pronounced in winter than in other seasons, and indoor athletes had lower serum vitamin D levels than outdoor athletes. Low vitamin D levels have been demonstrated to have negative effects on muscle strength, power, and endurance; increase stress fractures and other musculoskeletal injuries; and affect acute muscle injuries and inflammation following high-intensity exercises. Therefore, periodic assessment and monitoring of vitamin D levels are necessary in athletes; the recommended serum level of 25(OH)D is > 32 ng/mL and the preferred level is > 40 ng/mL (-1). In those with low levels of vitamin D, exposure to sunlight and an improved diet or supplements may be helpful. Particularly, 2000-6000 IU of supplemental vitamin D3 can be consumed daily. [Conclusion] Vitamin D is a potential nutritional factor that can significantly affect physical performance and musculoskeletal injuries in athletes. The importance and role of vitamin D in athletes should be emphasized, and the current levels of vitamin D should be assessed. Therefore, it is essential to periodically evaluate and monitor serum vitamin D levels in athletes.
[Purpose] This study aimed to investigate the effects of branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) supplement on delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) by analyzing the maximum muscle strength and indicators of muscle damage. [Methods] Twelve men with majors in physical education were assigned to the BCAA group and placebo group in a double-blinded design, and repeated measurements were conducted. DOMS was induced with an isokinetic exercise. Following BCAA administration, the changes in the knee extension peak torque, flexion peak torque, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), creatine kinase (CK), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) concentrations were analyzed. The maximum knee muscle strength was measured at the baseline (pre-D0) following BCAA administration for 5 days before exercise (-D5, -4D, -3D, -2D, -1D). In contrast, the post-treatment measurements (D3) were recorded after BCAA administration for 3 days (post-D0, D1, D2). Blood samples were obtained before (pre-D0), immediately after (post-D0), 24 h (D1), 48 h (D2), and 72 h (D3) after the exercise to analyze the indicators of muscle strength. BCAA was administered twice daily for 8 days (5 days and 3 days before inducing DOMS and during the experimental period, respectively). [Results] There was no difference in the flexion peak torque between the groups. However, the BCAA group showed a significantly higher extension peak torque at D3 (second isokinetic exercise), compared to the placebo group (p<.05). There was no difference in AST changes between the groups. Nonetheless, the CK and LDH were significantly reduced in the BCAA group, compared to the placebo group. There was no correlation between the extension peak torque and flexion peak torque. However, the CK and LDH increased proportionately in DOMS. Moreover, their concentrations significantly increased with a decreasing peak torque (p<.01). [Conclusion] An exercise-induced DOMS results in a decrease in the peak torque and a proportional increase in the CK and LDH concentrations. Moreover, the administration of BCAA inhibits the reduction of the extension peak torque and elevation of CK and LDH concentrations. Therefore, BCAA might be administered as a supplement to maintain the muscle strength and prevent muscle damage during vigorous exercises that may induce DOMS in sports settings.

[Purpose] Deleted in breast cancer 1 (DBC1) ablation causes obesity, and stearoyl-CoA desaturase 1 (SCD1) induces the biosynthesis of monounsaturated fatty acids. This study examined whether voluntary wheel running (VWR) alters SCD-1 and DBC1 protein levels in the liver of leptin-deficient ob/ob mice. [Methods] Twenty-five Ob/Ob mice were divided into two groups (ob/ob-Sed and ob/ob-Ex). The expression of DBC1 and SCD1 in the mouse liver was determined using western blotting. [Results] After 10 weeks, VWR significantly reduced body weight without affecting the fatty acid synthase and CD36 protein levels. The average daily running distance was 4.0±1.0 km/day. This improvement was associated with changes in the hepatic SCD1 and DBC1 levels. Hepatic SCD-1 protein levels increased significantly, and DBC1 protein levels decreased in ob/ob-Sed animals. On the other hand, VWR inhibited the obesity-induced increase in SCD1 expression and impaired the obesity-induced decrease in DBC1 expression in the liver of leptin-deficient ob/ob mice. [Conclusion] This is the first study showing that VWR has strong effects on hepatic SCD1 and DBC1 in ob/ob mice, and provides key insights into the effects of exercise on obesity.

This study aims to propose desirable operational strategies for public library programs as a means to alleviate the daily difficulties faced by married immigrant women. To achieve this, We conducted an analysis of 326 multicultural programs from 132 institutions, all of which were supported by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2022. The purpose was to gain an understanding of the current situation and identify any issues related to these programs. Additionally, we conducted interviews with married immigrant women to gain insights into the challenges they encounter in Korean society and to determine their specific demands regarding library programs. Furthermore, we interviewed librarians responsible for multicultural services to better comprehend their experiences in managing such programs and to understand their perceptions of multicultural services for married immigrant women. Based on these findings, we have proposed four operational strategies for public library programs targeting married immigrant women. These strategies include: 1) Program content, 2) Program operation method, 3) Building a personal network and utilizing human resources, 4) Collaboration with other institutions.
This study was aimed at adult students majoring in the healthcare field to hear stories about life and leisure following work and study at the same time. To this end, four adult students were asked to describe their current life and leisure, positive and negative aspects of their leisure, and future life and leisure, along with interviews, focusing on the daily content they felt during the course of work and study. Afterwards, the technical contents were mutually reinforced with the interview contents and described in the form of self-recording. The decrease in leisure time in adult students' work and study balance inevitably reduces the quality of life. However, each of them was making an effort not to lose the balance between the purpose of their studies and their leisure time. A student's work-study balance is a choice and process for balancing life and leisure, and the joys and sorrows in the process are thought to be the value and hope of life.

This study is to evaluate the drought-related bigdata characteristics published from South Korean by developing crawler. The 5 years (2013 ~ 2017) drought-related posted articles were collected from Korean internet search engine 'NAVER' which contains 13 main and 81 local daily newspapers. During the 5 years period, total 40,219 news articles including 'drought' word were found using crawler. To filter the homonyms liken drought to soccer goal drought in sports, money drought economics, and policy drought in politics often used in South Korea, the quality control was processed and 47.8 % articles were filtered. After, the 20,999 (52.2 %) drought news articles of this study were classified into four categories of water deficit (WD), water security and support (WSS), economic damage and impact (EDI), and environmental and sanitation impact (ESI) with 27, 15, 13, and 18 drought-related keywords in each category. The WD, WSS, EDI, and ESI occupied 41.4 %, 34.5 %, 14.8 %, and 9.3 % respectively. The drought articles were mostly posted in June 2015 and June 2017 with 22.7 % (15,097) and 15.9 % (10,619) respectively. The drought news articles were spatiotemporally compared with SPI (Standardized Precipitation Index) and RDI (Reservoir Drought Index) were calculated. They were classified into administration boundaries of 8 main cities and 9 provinces in South Korea because the drought response works based on local government unit. The space-time clustering between news articles (WD, WSS, EDI, and ESI) and indices (SPI and RDI) were tried how much they have correlation each other. The spatiotemporal clusters detection was applied using SaTScan software (Kulldorff, 2015). The retrospective and prospective cluster analyses were conducted for past and present time to understand how much they are intensive in clusters. The news articles of WD, WSS and EDI had strong clusters in provinces, and ESI in cities.
Purpose: Postoperative exercise for acute Achilles tendon rupture is important for a patient's return to daily life and sports. On the other hand, the protocol requires considerable effort to educate patients and continuous checking. This study evaluated the outcome of a new simple and delayed rehabilitation protocol after Achilles tendon rupture repair. Materials and Methods: From July 2014 to November 2020, one hundred eighty-three patients were operated on by one surgeon. The exercise protocol was classified into two methods. One group (immediate protocol, control group) started immediate full weight bearing with a 20° plantar flexion range of motion from two days postoperatively. Ankle dorsiflexion was restricted to 0°. The other group (delayed protocol, case group) started full weight bearing with a controlled ankle motion boot from two weeks postoperatively. No range of motion exercise was allowed until six weeks postoperatively. Age, sex, body mass index, ankle range of motion, muscle power, time to return to previous physical activity, functional score, and complication rate were evaluated. The results of the two groups were compared using a Mann-Whitney test. Statistical significance was set as p<0.05. Results: The range of motion, double heel rising, and one-leg standing were achieved faster in the control group (p<0.05). However, single-heel rising, repeated single-heel rising, return to previous activity (work, run, and sport), and functional scores showed no statistical difference (p>0.05). Conclusion: Simple and delayed postoperative rehabilitation of acute Achilles tendon rupture without active range of motion exercises showed satisfactory functional results and a low complication rate.
Purpose: Autologous osteochondral transplantation (AOT) is indicated for patients with a large osteochondral lesion of the talus (OLT), accompanying subchondral cyst, and the failure of bone marrow stimulation (BMS) procedures. Despite the many reports on the clinical results of surgical treatment for medial osteochondral lesions, those of lateral lesions are rare. This paper reports the intermediate-term clinical outcomes after AOT for lateral OLTs. Materials and Methods: Twenty-one patients with lateral OLTs were followed up for at least three years after AOT. The clinical evaluations comprised the Foot and Ankle Outcome Score (FAOS) and Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM). The radiographic assessment included the irregularity of the articular surface (subchondral plate), the progression of degenerative arthritis, and the changes in talar tilt angle and anterior talar translation. Results: The mean FAOS and FAAM scores improved significantly from 42.1 to 89.5 and 39.5 to 90.6 points, respectively, at the final follow-up (p<0.001). The radiological evaluation revealed two cases (9.5%) of articular step-off ≥2 mm and 1 case (4.8%) of progressive arthritis. The mean talar tilt angle and anterior talar translation improved significantly. As postoperative complications, there was one case of a local wound problem, one case of superficial peroneal nerve injury, and one case of donor site morbidity. At a mean follow-up of 62.3 months, no patient showed a recurrence of instability or required reoperation for OLT. Conclusion: AOT for the lateral OLTs demonstrated satisfactory intermediate-term clinical outcomes, including daily and sports activity abilities. Most OLT could be accessed through lateral ligament division and capsulotomy, and the incidence of iatrogenic complications, such as recurrent sprains or chronic instability, was minimal. AOT appears to be an effective and relatively safe treatment for patients with large lateral osteochondral lesions unresponsive to conservative therapy, with subchondral cysts, or with failed primary BMS.
