Physicochemical Components and Antioxidant Activities of Daebong Persimmon (Diospyros kaki cv. Hachiya) Peel Vinegars

  • To evaluate utilization of persimmon peels as novel bio-materials, the general composition and antioxidant activities of Daebong persimmon vinegar (DPV), Daebong persimmon peel vinegar (DPPV) and commercial persimmon vinegar (CPV) were investigated. The pH of DPPV had slightly higher than that of other vinegars. The titratable acidities of vinegars were 3.24% (DPV), 2.77% (DPPV) and 7.78% (CPV), respectively. The reducing sugar contents showed that DPV had slightly higher than that of other vinegars. The browning degree of DPV was lower than CPV in contrast to the turbidity. The results of Hunter's color value have showed that overall values of CPV had significantly higher than DPPV and DPV. The total phenolic contents of DPV and CPV were 19.49 and 17.13 mg/100g GAE, respectively. The total flavonoid contents of DPPV (8.04 mg/100g CE) were two fold higher than that of DPV (3.85 mg/100g CE). The antioxidant activities, by DPPH and FRAP assays, of DPV showed stronger than those of other vinegars. Free sugars were mainly composed of fructose and glucose. Organic acids were presented in the order acetic acid, succinic acid, malic acid, tartaric acid, citric acid and oxalic acid. These results suggest that the Daebong persimmon peels could be utilized for vinegar production as a health-benefit material.

Genome Sequences of Spinach Deltapartitivirus 1, Spinach Amalgavirus 1, and Spinach Latent Virus Identified in Spinach Transcriptome

  • Complete genome sequences of three new plant RNA viruses, Spinach deltapartitivirus 1 (SpDPV1), Spinach amalgavirus 1 (SpAV1), and Spinach latent virus (SpLV), were identified from a spinach (Spinacia oleracea) transcriptome dataset. The RNA-dependent RNA polymerases (RdRps) of SpDPV1, SpAV1, and SpLV showed 72%, 53%, and 93% amino acid sequence identities with the homologous RdRp of the most closely related virus, respectively, suggesting that SpDPV1 and SpAV1 were novel viruses. Sequence similarity and phylogenetic analyses revealed that SpDPV1 belonged to the genus Deltapartitivirus of the family Partitiviridae, SpAV1 to the genus Amalgavirus of the family Amalgaviridae, and SpLV to the genus Ilarvirus of the family Bromoviridae. Based on the demarcation criteria, SpDPV1 and SpAV1 are considered as novel species of the genera Deltapartitivirus and Amalgavirus, respectively. This is the first report of these two viruses from spinach.

  • This paper presents a new present value measure, the dynamic present value, or DPV. DPV takes into account not only the value of the realized cash flow but also that of potential cash flow. The DPV approach enables the analyst to observe differences in the present value of the alternatives every period over the whole time period of interest. This is the most fundamental advantage of the DPV approach over the traditional present value approach in which the present value of the alternatives is evaluated only one particular point of time. The concepts of the realized and potential cash flows are also developed in this paper. These new concepts are found to be useful elements in evaluating economic alternatives.

A New Certificate Path Processing Scheme employed the Trusted CA for improving an efficiency on the Computational Aspect (연산적 측면의 효율성을 향상시키는 신뢰 CA를 이용한 새로운 인증 경로 처리 기법)

  • The Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) trends to delegate the certificate path processing to the Delegated Path Discovery (DPD) Server and Delegated Path Validation (DPV) server recently. The most critical factor for the selection of the delegated server is to allow the server to be equipped with a high reliability through a low cost, and simple implementation. In this paper, we propose a new certificate path processing scheme employed the trusted CA as the DPD/DPV server by adding the capability of the Validation Authority (VA) to the trusted CA. Since our proposed scheme uses the existing trusted CA as validation server, we can achieve a high trust through a simple implementation for the processing. Besides, we propose an additional scheme for reducing an overhead on the trusted CA. it is obtained by delegating digital signature verification to CAs on the path and by skipping the repeated path processing. As the result, our proposed validation scheme can be performed efficiently with high speed and low computational overhead.

Imprinted Graphene-Starch Nanocomposite Matrix-Anchored EQCM Platform for Highly Selective Sensing of Epinephrine

  • In this paper, an electrochemical sensor for epinephrine (EP), a neurotransmitter was developed by anchoring molecularly imprinted polymeric matrix (MIP) on the surface of gold-coated quartz crystal electrode of electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) using starch nanoparticles (Starch NP) - reduced graphene oxide (RGO) nanocomposite as polymeric format for the first time. Use of EP in therapeutic treatment requires proper dose and route of administration. Proper follow-up of neurological disorders and timely diagnosis of them has been found to depend on EP level. The MIP sensor was developed by electrodeposition of starch NP-RGO composite on EQCM electrode in presence of template EP. As the imprinted sites are located on the surface, high specific surface area enables good accessibility and high binding affinity to template molecule. Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and piezoelectrogravimmetry were used for monitoring binding/release, rebinding of template to imprinted cavities. MIP-coated EQCM electrode were characterized by contact angle measurements, AFM images, piezoelectric responses including viscoelasticity of imprinted films, and other voltammetric measurements including direct (DPV) and indirect (using a redox probe) measurements. Selectivity was assessed by imprinting factor (IF) as high as 3.26 (DPV) and 3.88 (EQCM). Sensor was rigorously checked for selectivity in presence of other structurally close analogues, real matrix (blood plasma), reproducibility, repeatability, etc. Under optimized conditions, the EQCM-MIP sensor showed linear dynamic ranges ($1-10{\mu}M$). The limit of detection 40 ppb (DPV) and 290 ppb (EQCM) was achieved without any cross reactivity and matrix effect indicating high sensitivity and selectivity for EP. Hence, an eco-friendly MIP-sensor with high sensitivity and good selectivity was fabricated which could be applied in "real" matrices in a facile manner.

Nano composite System based on ZnO-functionalized Graphene Oxide Nanosheets for Determination of Cabergoline

  • In this paper we report an electrochemical sensor based on ZnO-functionalized graphene oxide nanocomposite (ZnO-GO) for the sensitive determination of the cabergoline. Cabergoline electrochemical behaviors were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronoamperometry (CHA) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The modified electrode shows electrocatalytic activity toward cabergoline oxidation in phosphate buffer solution (PBS) (pH 7.0) with a reduction of the overpotential of about 180 mV and an increase in peak current. The DPV data showed that the obtained anodic peak currents were linearly dependent on the cabergoline concentrations in the range of $1.0-200.0{\mu}M$, with the detection limit of $0.45{\mu}M$. The prepared electrode was successfully applied for the determination of cabergoline in real samples.

An Empirical Study on the Application of Lead-Acid Batteries to ESSs and Performance Improvement Methods

  • In this paper, an approach to extend the life of lead-acid batteries through the elimination of sulfation with "rest time" using the pulse current of a conventional DPV (Differential Pulse Voltammetry) method is discussed. A new rest time without "0" current in "saw-tooth" pattern pulses is proposed to overcome the "0" current (blackout period), which is a shortcoming of DPV. This will enable the proposed method to be used in the loaded state. In the proposed approach, ESSs (Energy Storage Systems) were discharged for 5 h twice per day for 6 months on weekdays. To observe the changes in the lifespan of the systems, for the same period, the changes in the impedances of lead-acid batteries which were being charged e without charging and discharging were measure and compared. This study is focused on determining the effectiveness of lead-acid batteries as ESSs.

α -Cyclodextrin Modified Screen Printed Graphite Electrodes for Detection of Phenols

  • A screen printed graphite electrode has been developed for a simple and sensitive determination of phenolic compounds in an aqueous solution. The electrode developed uses a simple and effective screen printing technique with ${\alpha}-Cyclodextrin({\alpha}-CD)$ modified graphite ink. Phenols were captured on the surface of the ${\alpha}-CD$ modified electrode through complex formation. The phenol/ ${\alpha}-CD$ complex was deposited and quantified electrochemically using cyclic voltammetry (CV), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and square wave voltammetry (SWV). The optimization of the experimental parameters was performed in regard to electrode composition, pH, temperature, sample preconcentration time. Interferences from other organic compounds were investigated. The detection limit for phenols was 500 ${\pm}7$ nM for DPV, with the linear range of 0.5 ${\mu}M$ -25.0 ${\mu}M$ and 30 ${\pm}2$ nM for SWV, with the linear range of 30 nM - $50{\mu}M$, respectively.

A Nonsymmetric Model of Directional Probability Variation [DPV] for Tanks (전차동체의 피탄각 결정을 위한 비대칭 방향확률분포 모델)

  • In this study, a nonsymmetric model of directional probability variation (dpv), which is fundamental and conforms well to various moving situations of attacking tanks, is obtained based on the Whittaker's theory. It is shown that it produces the same expression of the probability density function as the Whittaker's under the special moving condition of an attacking tank. Using the derived dpvs, the probability densities for the various cases of some examples are calculated numerically to verify the derived formulas, and compared with other existing symmetrical distributions widely used to grasp characteristics of them. As a result, it is noted that the plots of the probability density function for various cases selected exhibit very different and useful behavioral features. Applying the results with respect to the every tank in the computer simulation of engagement between two tank forces, it is expected that more reasonable shot distributions can be given comparing with other existing symmetrical ones. The derived dpvs may be utilized to decide shot distribution of other weapon systems through small modification.
