  • Recently, the magnitude and frequency of extreme heavy rains and localized heavy rains have increased due to abnormal climate, which caused increased flood damage in river basin. As a result, the nonlinearity of the hydrological system of rivers or basins is increasing, and there is a limitation in that the lead time is insufficient to predict the water level using the existing physical-based hydrological model. This study predicted the water level at Ulsan (Taehwagyo) with a lead time of 0, 1, 2, 3, 6, 12 hours by applying deep learning techniques based on Deep Neural Network (DNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and evaluated the prediction accuracy. As a result, DNN model using the sliding window concept showed the highest accuracy with a correlation coefficient of 0.97 and RMSE of 0.82 m. If deep learning-based water level prediction using a DNN model is performed in the future, high prediction accuracy and sufficient lead time can be secured than water level prediction using existing physical-based hydrological models.

  • In this study, we propose a DNN (Deep Neural Network)-based sign language translation model that can significantly reduce training time by compressing sign language coordinates. We compared and analyzed the accuracy and training time of the model with and without sign language coordinate compression. The results of using the proposed model for sign language translation showed that while the accuracy decreased by approximately 5.9% after compressing the sign language video, the training time was reduced by 56.57%, indicating a substantial gain in training efficiency compared to the loss in translation accuracy.

  • The proposed model implements a model that improves the face prediction rate and recognition rate through learning with an artificial neural network using face detection, landmark and face recognition algorithms. After landmarking in the face images of a specific person, the proposed model use the previously learned Caffe model to extract face detection and embedding vector 128D. The learning is learned by building machine learning algorithms such as support vector machine (SVM) and deep neural network (DNN). Face recognition is tested with a face image different from the learned figure using the learned model. As a result of the experiment, the result of learning with DNN rather than SVM showed better prediction rate and recognition rate. However, when the hidden layer of DNN is increased, the prediction rate increases but the recognition rate decreases. This is judged as overfitting caused by a small number of objects to be recognized. As a result of learning by adding a clear face image to the proposed model, it is confirmed that the result of high prediction rate and recognition rate can be obtained. This research will be able to obtain better recognition and prediction rates through effective deep learning establishment by utilizing more face image data.

  • For the safe and reliable operation of lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles or energy storage systems, having accurate information of the battery, such as the state of charge (SOC), is essential. Many different techniques of battery SOC estimation have been developed, such as the Kalman filter. However, when this filter is applied to multiple batteries, it has difficulty maintaining the accuracy of the estimation over all cells owing to the difference in parameter values of each cell. The difference in the parameter of each cell may increase as the operation time accumulates due to aging. In this paper, a novel deep neural network (DNN)-based SOC estimation method for multi-cell application is proposed. In the proposed method, DNN is implemented to determine the nonlinear relationships of the voltage and current at different SOCs and temperatures. In the training, the voltage and current data obtained at different temperatures during charge/discharge cycles are used. After the comprehensive training with the data obtained from the cycle test with a cell, the resulting algorithm is applied to estimate the SOC of other cells. Experimental results show that the mean absolute error of the estimation is 1.213% at 25℃ with the proposed DNN-based SOC estimation method.

  • In a conventional speech recognition system using Gaussian Mixture Model-Hidden Markov Model (GMM-HMM), the cepstral feature normalization method based on pole filtering was effective in improving the performance of recognition of short utterances in noisy environments. In this paper, the usefulness of this method for the state-of-the-art speech recognition system using Deep Neural Network (DNN) is examined. Experimental results on AURORA 2 DB show that the cepstral mean and variance normalization based on pole filtering improves the recognition performance of very short utterances compared to that without pole filtering, especially when there is a large mismatch between the training and test conditions.

  • The first step is to determine the principal dimensions of the design ship, such as length between perpendiculars, beam, draft and depth when accomplishing the design of a new vessel. To make this process easier, a database with a large amount of existing ship data and a regression analysis technique are needed. Recently, deep learning, a branch of artificial intelligence (AI) has been used in regression analysis. In this paper, deep learning neural networks are used for regression analysis to find the regression function between the input and output data. To find the neural network structure with the highest accuracy, the errors of neural network structures with varying the number of the layers and the nodes are compared. In this paper, Python TensorFlow Keras API and MATLAB Deep Learning Toolbox are used to build deep learning neural networks. Constructed DNN (deep neural networks) makes helpful in determining the principal dimension of the ship and saves much time in the ship design process.

  • Artificial Intelligence is establishing itself as a familiar tool from an intractable concept. In this trend, financial sector is also looking to improve the problem of existing system which includes Fraud Detection System (FDS). It is being difficult to detect sophisticated cyber financial fraud using original rule-based FDS. This is because diversification of payment environment and increasing number of electronic financial transactions has been emerged. In order to overcome present FDS, this paper suggests 3 types of artificial intelligence models, Generative Adversarial Network (GAN), Deep Neural Network (DNN), and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). GAN proves how data imbalance problem can be developed while DNN and CNN show how abnormal financial trading patterns can be precisely detected. In conclusion, among the experiments on this paper, WGAN has the highest improvement effects on data imbalance problem. DNN model reflects more effects on fraud classification comparatively.

  • Solar photovoltaic can provide electrical energy with only radiation, and its use is expanding rapidly as a new energy source. This study predicts the short and long-term PV power generation using actual converter output data of photovoltaic system. The prediction algorithm uses multiple linear regression, support vector machine (SVM), and deep learning such as deep neural network (DNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM). In addition, three models are used according to the input and output structure of the weather element. Long-term forecasts are made monthly, seasonally and annually, and short-term forecasts are made for 7 days. As a result, the deep learning network is better in prediction accuracy than multiple linear regression and SVM. In addition, LSTM, which is a better model for time series prediction than DNN, is somewhat superior in terms of prediction accuracy. The experiment results according to the input and output structure appear Model 2 has less error than Model 1, and Model 3 has less error than Model 2.

  • Shear strength is the most important indicator in the evaluation of rock slope stability. It is generally estimated by comparing the results of existing literature data, back analysis, experiments and etc. There are additional variables related to the state of discontinuity to consider in the shear strength of the rock slope. It is difficult to determine whether these variables exist through drilling, and it is also difficult to find an exact relationship with shear strength. In this study, the data calculated through back analysis were used. The relationship between previously considered variables was applied to deep learning and the possibility for estimating shear strength of rock slope was explored. For comparison, an existing simple linear regression model and a deep learning algorithm, a deep neural network(DNN) model, were used. Although each analysis model derived similar prediction results, the explanatory power of DNN was improved with a small differences.

  • In this paper, the importance of input factors of a DNN (Deep Neural Network) PM2.5 forecasting model using LRP(Layer-wise Relevance Propagation) is analyzed, and forecasting performance is improved. Input factor importance analysis is performed by dividing the learning data into time and PM2.5 concentration. As a result, in the low concentration patterns, the importance of weather factors such as temperature, atmospheric pressure, and solar radiation is high, and in the high concentration patterns, the importance of air quality factors such as PM2.5, CO, and NO2 is high. As a result of analysis by time, the importance of the measurement factors is high in the case of the forecast for the day, and the importance of the forecast factors increases in the forecast for tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. In addition, date, temperature, humidity, and atmospheric pressure all show high importance regardless of time and concentration. Based on the importance of these factors, the LRP_DNN prediction model is developed. As a result, the ACC(accuracy) and POD(probability of detection) are improved by up to 5%, and the FAR(false alarm rate) is improved by up to 9% compared to the previous DNN model.
