  • Since DCT algorithm divides an image into blocks uniformly in both the spatial domain and the frequency domain, it has a weak point that it can not reflect HVS(Human Visual System) efficiently To avoid this problem, we propose a new algorithm, which combines only the merits of DCT and wavelet transform. The proposed algorithm uses the high compaction efficiency of DCT, and applies wavelet transform mode to DCT coefficients, so that the algorithm can utilize interband and intraband correlations of wavelet simultaneously After that, the proposed algorithm quantizes each coefficient based on the characteristic of each coefficient's band. In terms of coding method, the quantized coefficients of important DCT coefficients have symmetrical distribution, the bigger that value Is, the smaller occurrence probability is. Using the characteristic, we propose a new still image coding algorithm of symmetric and bidirectional tree structure with simple algorithm and fast decoding time. Comparing the proposed method with JPEG, the proposed method yields better image quality both objectively and subjectively at the same bit rate.

  • Digital Video (DV) coding standards for digital video cassette recorder are based mainly on DCT and variable length coding. DV has low hardware complexity but high compressed bit rate of about 26 Mb/s. Thus, it is necessary to encode video with low complex video coding at the studios and then transcode compressed video into MPEG-2 for video-on-demand system. Because these coding methods exploit DCT, transcoding in the DCT domain can reduce computational complexity by excluding duplicated procedures. In transcoding DV into MPEC-2 intra coding, multiplying matrix by transformed data is used for 4:1:1-to-4:2:2 chroma format conversion and the conversion from 2-4-8 to 8-8 DCT mode, and therefore enables parallel processing. Variance of sub block for MPEG-2 rate control is computed completely in the DCT domain. These are verified through experiments. We estimate motion hierarchically using DCT coefficients for transcoding into MPEG-2 inter coding. First, we estimate motion of a macro block (MB) only with 4 DC values of 4 sub blocks and then estimate motion with 16-point MB using IDCT of 2$\times$2 low frequencies in each sub block, and finish estimation at a sub pixel as the fifth step. ME with overlapped search range shows better PSNR performance than ME without overlapping.

  • In this paper. we propose the method of Scene Change Detection for video sequence using the DC components and the moving vectors in the Macro Blocks in the DCT blocks. The proposed method detects the Scene Change which would not be related with the specific sequences in the compressed MPEG domain. To do this. we define new metrics for Scene Change Detection using the features of picture component and detect the exact Scene Change point of B-pictures using the characteristics of B-picture's sharp response for the moving vectors. In brief, we will detect the cut point using I-picture and the gradual scene changes such as dissolve, fade, wipe, etc. As a results, our proposed method shows good test results for the various MPEG sequences.

  • A novel foveation filter method is proposed in DCT domain. For countering the blocking and ringing artifacts, we devise the tools measuring the signal gradient, the block signal variations in the DCT domain. Each measurement is properly applied to each enhancement region and smoothing region. The proposed method optimally adapts the enhancement factors to the characteristics of the underlying signals and so maximizes the enhancement performances with significantly suppressing the artifacts. The subjective and objective evaluations verify that the proposed method sustains producing the improved video qualities for various sequences without tuning any parameters to individual sequences.

  • In this paper. we propose a digital watermarking method for still images in the discrete cosine transform (DCT) domain. The adaptive watermark insertion method in the high frequency region within a given image is employed to increase the invisibility of the inserted watermark in images, in which variable block-size method is used for selection of the high frequency region. Experimental results show that the proposed watermarking method is robust to several common image processing techniques. including joint photographic experts group (JPEG) compression, lowpass filtering, multiple watermarking, and croppIng.

  • In this paper, we discussed the quantization technique in the DCT domain employing a vector quantizer (VQ), and described the relations between the DCT and the VQ. And, we introduced a zonal coding technique for the OCT coefficients based on the classified VQ technique proposed in [2]. We shall show that this technique reduced the coding complexity about 30% while maintaining the same image quality as shown in [2]. A result of simulation with a natural image is also presented.

  • In this paper. digital watermarking algorithm based on human visual system and transform domain is presented. Firstly, original image is separated into RGB thannels, watermark is embedded into the coefficients of DCT so as to consider a contrast sensitivity and texture degrees. In preprocessing, DCT domain based transform is involved and binary image of visually recognizable patterns is utilized as a watermark. Consequently, experimental results showed that proposed algorithm is robust and imperceptibility such destruction attack as JPEG compression.

  • In this paper, we proposed an iterative digital image watermarking technique using encrypted binary phase computer generated hologram in the discrete cosine transform(OCT) domain. For the embedding process of watermark, using simulated annealing algorithm, we would generate a binary phase computer generated hologram(BPCGH) which can reconstruct hidden image perfectly instead of hidden image and repeat the hologram and encrypt it through the XOR operation with key image that is ramdomly generated binary phase components. We multiply the encrypted watermark by the weight function and embed it into the DC coefficients in the DCT domain of host image and an inverse DCT is performed. For the extracting process of watermark, we compare the DC coefficients of watermarked image and original host image in the DCT domain and dividing it by the weight function and decrypt it using XOR operation with key image. And we recover the hidden image by inverse Fourier transforming the decrypted watermark. Finally, we compute the correlation between the original hidden image and recovered hidden image to determine if a watermark exits in the host image. The proposed watermarking technique use the hologram information of hidden image which consist of binary values and encryption technique so it is very secure and robust to the external attacks such as compression, noises and cropping. We confirmed the advantages of the proposed watermarking technique through the computer simulations.

  • Image resizing is to change an image size by upsampling or downsampling of a digital image. Most still images and video frames are given in a compressed domain on digital media. Image resizing of a compressed image can be performed in a spatial domain via decompression or recompression. In general, resizing of a compressed image in a compressed domain is much faster than that in a spatial domain. In this paper, we propose an approach to resize images in the integer discrete cosine transform (DCT) domain, which exploits the multiplication-convolution property of DCT.

  • Image upsampling can be performed in both spatial and frequency (transform) domain. In the spatial domain, various upsampling techniques are developed and 6-tap FIR interpolation filter is most well known method, which is embedded in many video coding standards. It can provide high subjective quality but shows low objective quality. In the transform domain, simple zero padding method can produce upsampled image easily. It shows better objective quality than 6-tap filtering, but it yields ringing effects which annoy eyes. In this paper, we present efficient upsampling method using frequency addition method in transform domain to provide better subjective and objective quality than conventional method Extensive simulation results show that the proposed algorithm produces visually fine images with high PSNR.
