  • A CMOS x-ray line scan sensor which is used in both medical imaging and non-destructive diagnosis is designed. It has a pixel array of 512 columns ${\times}$ 4 rows and a built-in DC-DC converter. The pixel circuit is newly proposed to have three binning modes such as no binning, $2{\times}2$ binning, and $4{\times}4$ binning in order to select one of pixel sizes of $100{\mu}m$, $200{\mu}m$, and $400{\mu}m$. It is designed to output a fully differential image signal which is insensitive to power supply and input common mode noises. The layout size of the designed line scan sensor with a $0.18{\mu}m$ x-ray CMOS image sensor process is $51,304{\mu}m{\times}5,945{\mu}m$.

  • We propose an effective method for suppressing both side and grating lobes by applying 2-dimensional Fourier Transform to the received channel data during the receive focusing process of an ultrasound imaging system. When the signal from the image point is focused, the channel signals have the same DC value across the channels. However, even after echoes from outside an imaging point are focused, they are manifested as having different spatial frequencies depending on their incident angles. Therefore, after the receive focusing delay time is applied, 2-D Fourier Transform is performed on the time-channel data to separate the DC component and other frequency components in the spectral domain, and the weighting value is defined using the ratio of the two values. The side lobe and grating lobe were suppressed by multiplying the ultrasound image by a weighting value. Ultrasound images with a frequency of 5 MHz were simulated in a 64-channel linear array. The grating lobe appearing in the ultrasound image was completely removed by applying the proposed method. In addition, the side lobe was reduced and the lateral resolution was greatly increased. Results of computer simulation on a human organ mimicking image show that the proposed method can aid in better lesion diagnosis by increasing the image contrast.

  • Intra-frame video compression, which cannot make use of temporal predictions, requires much higher bit rates compared with inter-frame schemes. In order to reduce bit rates, intra-frame predictive coding methods in DCT domain have been studied especially within the framework of the MPEG-4 video coding standard currently being developed. In this paper, we propose novel intra-frame predictive coding methods in DCT domain with the marginal complexity increase over the conventional methods . The proposed methods consist of a DC coefficient prediction method and two AC coefficient prediction methods. The proposed methods consist of a DC coefficient prediction method and two AC coefficient prediction methods. The proposed DC coefficient prediction method makes it possible to adaptively select the prediction directions without overhead bits, by comparing gradients of DC coefficients from neighboring blocks. As the AC coefficient prediction methods, first, we present an effective method which can improve the prediction directions of the MPEG-4 scheme by considering the DC coefficient of the current block to be coded. And, we present another effective method that decision on the prediction is carried out for each AC coefficient. Simulation results show that substantial bit savings can be achieved by the proposed methods.

  • Conventional boost-full-bridge and boost-hybrid-bridge two-stage inverters are widely applied in order to adapt to the wide dc input voltage range of photovoltaic arrays. However, the efficiency of the conventional topology is not fully optimized because additional switching losses are generated in the voltage conversion so that the input voltage rises and then falls. Moreover, the electrolytic capacitors in a dc-link lead to a larger volume combined with increases in both weight and cost. This paper proposes a higher efficiency inverter with time-sharing synchronous modulation. The energy transmission paths, wheeling branches and switching losses for the high-frequency switches are optimized so that the overall efficiency is greatly improved. In this paper, a contrastive analysis of the component losses for the conventional and proposed inverter topologies is carried out in MATLAB. Finally, the high-efficiency under different switching frequencies and different input voltages is verified by a 3 kW prototype.

  • Zero-watermarking is a digital watermarking technique that can escape from data distortion and quality degradation by no watermark insertion into digital images to be watermarked. This paper proposes DCT0CRT, a CRT-based zero-watermarking technique in the domain of DCT. One of the DC and low-frequency AC coefficients of each DCT block chosen in chaotic way from an image is selected by testing whether it satisfies the CRT-based condition matching with the watermark bit to be embedded. Such selection information forms a key to extract the watermark from the watermarked image. Experimental results show that the image quality watermarked by DCT0CRT is better than that watermarked by any other CRT-based watermarking techniques and the inserted watermark is robust against some common attacks such as sharpening, blurring, and JPEG lossy compression.

  • We have developed a millimeter-wave passive imaging system with reflector for detection of concealed objects. We have designed a millimeter-wave sensor, control device for reflector control, and a lens for focusing of millimeter-wave signal at center frequency of 94GHz. DC signal from millimeter-wave sensor output is filtered by low pass filter and amplified by video amplifier, and then converted into digital signal by using ADC/DAQ. This signal is image processed by computer, and it is possible to obtain millimeter-wave passive image with resolution of $18{\times}64$ pixel using the fabricated system. It is shown that we can obtain the image of men and concealed object with the system.

  • This paper presents fragile watermark system using quantization and DC coefficients. It is a way to prevent the watermark fro, being detected if the original has been modified in any way. In other words, the detection of a watermark ca be said to be originality after the watermark is inserted, without any damage. Since lossy compression such as JPEG is often allowed or required in practical applications, authentication methods, authentication methods should be distinguished from malicious modifications such as image shifting, cropping, filtering, and replacement. The proposed algorithm implements a fragile watermarking algorithm that shows image authentication with JPEC compression and the watermark easily breaks other malicious variants.

  • In this paper, a directional reconstruction of lost block in image over noisy channel is presented. DCT coefficients or pixel values in the lost blocks are recovered by using the linear interpolation with available neighboring blocks that are adaptively selected by the directional measure that are composed of the DDC (Difference of DC opposite blocks)and SAC(Similarity of AC opposite blocks) between opposite blocks around lost blocks. The proposed directional recovery method is effective for the strong edge and texture regions because we do not make use of the fixed 4-neighboring blocks but exploit the varying neighboring blocks adaptively by the directional information in the local image. In this paper, we describe the novel directional measure(CDS: Combination of DDC and SAC) composed of the DDC and the SAC and select the usable block to recover the lost block with the directional measure. The proposed method shows about 0.6dB PSNR improvement in average compared to the conventional methods.

  • Video segmentation is a fundamental task in video indexing and it includes two kinds of shot change detections such as the abrupt transition and the gradual transition. The abrupt shot boundaries are detected by computing the image-based distance between adjacent frames and comparing this distance with a pre-determined threshold value. However, the gradual shot boundaries are difficult to detect with this approach. To overcome this difficulty, we propose the method that detects gradual transition in the MPEG compressed video using the HMM (Hidden Markov Model). We take two different HMMs such as a discrete HMM and a continuous HMM with a Gaussian mixture model. As image features for HMM's observations, we use two distinct features such as the difference of histogram of DC images between two adjacent frames and the difference of each individual macroblock's deviations at the corresponding macroblock's between two adjacent frames, where deviation means an arithmetic difference of each macroblock's DC value from the mean of DC values in the given frame. Furthermore, we obtain the DC sequences of P and B frame by the first order approximation for a fast and effective computation. Experiment results show that we obtain the best detection and classification performance of gradual transitions when a continuous HMM with one Gaussian model is taken and two image features are used together.

  • This paper describes an efficient algorithm for shot boundary detection in MPEG video stream. There are two types of shot boundary: abrupt and gradual. The proposed algorithm for detecting the abrupt shot boundaries used DCT DC value in compressed domain. The proposed algorithm of the gradual change detection consists of two-pass mechanism. In the first pass, the expected positions of shot boundaries are extracted using ratio value of motion vectors. After decoding frames that are extracted in the first pass, we will make the dissolving image using (n)th and (n+2)th image of expected position. The gradual shot boundaries are selected by similarity of the dissolving image and the image of (n+1)th expected position. As applying the algorithm for detecting shot boundaries, the gradual changes as well as the abrupt changes are detected efficiently. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method is computationally fast for detecting shot boundaries and robust to the variation of the video characteristic that is different for the kind of videos.
