Economics of available alternatives in the transmission planning are evaluated by the investment cost, loss cost and congestion cost. Congestion/loss cost is calculated in many years and many load levels by unit commitment of generators, optimal dispatch, load flow, judgement about transmission congestion and re-dispatch to reduce the congestion. The greatest difficulties to introduce variable optimization techniques on the transmission planning is the convergence of load flow. In this paper, economics in the transmission planning are evaluated using DC load flow, and case study is conducted on the Korea power system by proposed congestion/loss calculation methods.
By DC load flow approximation, we analyzed marginal cost that is the important factor of price signal for network congestion management and expressed as a function of load. In network congestion, a large scale electric network is partitioned into subnetwork to provide a effetive price signal through zonal pricing. We propose a new network partition technique using marginal cost sensitivity with a variety of load consumption.
A family of non-isolated DC-DC three-port converters (TPCs) that allows for a more flexible power flow among a renewable energy source, an energy storage device and a current-reversible DC bus is introduced. Most of the reported non-isolated topologies in this area consider only a power consuming load. However, for applications such as hybrid-electric vehicle braking systems and DC microgrids, the load power generating capability should also be considered. The proposed three-port family consists of one unidirectional port and two bi-directional ports. Hence, they are well-suited for photovoltaic (PV)-battery-DC bus systems from the power flow viewpoint. Three-port converters are derived by combining different commonly known power converters in an integrated manner while considering the voltage polarity, voltage levels among the ports and the overall voltage conversion ratio. The derived converter topologies are able to allow for seven different modes of operation among the sources and load. A three-port converter which integrates a boost converter with a buck converter is used as a design example. Extensions of these topologies by combining the soft-switching technique with the proposed design example are also presented. Experiment results are given to verify the proposed three-port converter family and its analysis.
DC distribution has several differences compared to AC distribution. DC distribution has a higher efficiency than AC distribution when distributing electricity at the same voltage level. Accordingly, power can be transferred further with low-voltage DC. In addition, power flow in a DC grid system is produced by only a voltage difference in magnitude. Owing to these differences, operation of a DC grid system significantly differs from that of an AC system. In this paper, the power flow problem in a bipolar-type DC grid with unbalanced load conditions is organized and solved. Control strategy of energy storage system on a slow time scale with power references obtained by solving an optimization problem regarding the DC grid is then proposed. The proposed strategy is verified with computer simulations.
This paper describes an extension or a pair or multiple load flow solutions and nose curve method developed for voltage stability analysis or AC power systems to AC/DC systems. In this approach the converters are regarded as voltage dependent loads. Assuming that the converters at the unstable (-mode) solution consume the same power equal to the power at the stable (+mode) solution, the unstable solutions or the nose curves arc determined. This method is very efficient since estimating voltage collapse point and voltage stability margin arc determined by a few iterations of multiple load flow solutions. Also the method has the advantages that since the structure or Jacobian matrix is same with that of AC load flow, modal analysis or voltage stability is readily applicable if desired.
This paper proposes a new soft switching technique for a phase-shift controlled bi-directional DC-DC converter. The described converter employs a low profile high frequency transformer and two active full-bridge converters for bidirectional power flow capability. A new soft switching technique is proposed, which guarantees soft switching over wide range (no load to full load) without any additional circuit components. In the proposed switching scheme, the switch pairs in the diagonal position of the converter each are turned on/off simultaneously by the switching signals with a variable duty ratio depending on the phase shift amount, and the converter is operated without freewheeling interval.
This paper proposes a nonisolated, bidirectional, soft-switching DC - DC converter with PWM plus phase shift (PPS) control. The proposed converter has an input-parallel/output-series configuration and can achieve the interleaving effect and high voltage gains, resulting in decreased voltage ratings in all related devices. The proposed converter can operate under zero-voltage switching (ZVS) conditions for all switches in continuous conduction mode. The power flow of the proposed converter can be controlled by changing the phase shift angle, and the duty is controlled to balance the voltage of four high voltage side capacitors. The PPS control device of the proposed converter is simple in structure and presents symmetrical switching patterns under a bidirectional power flow. The PPS control also ensures ZVS during charging and discharging at all loads and equalizes the voltage ratings of the output capacitors and switches. To verify the validity of the proposed converter, an experimental investigation of a 2 kW prototype is performed in both charging and discharging modes under different load conditions and a bidirectional power flow.
This paper presents a method for constructing composite power system effective load duration curves(CMELDC) at load points by Monte Carlo method. The concept of effective load duration curves(ELDC) in power system planning is useful and important in both HLII. CMELDC can be obtained from convolution integral processing of the probability function of unsupplied power and the load duration curve at each load point. This concept is analogy to the ELEC in HLI. And, the reliability indices (LOLP, EDNS) for composite power system are evaluated using CMELDC. Differences in reliability levels between HLI and HLII come from considering with the uncertainty associated with the outages of the transmission system. It is expected that the CMELDC can be applied usefully to areas such as reliability evaluation, probabilistic production cost simulation and analytical outage cost assessment, etc. in HLII, DC load flow and Monte Carlo method are used for this study. The characteristics and effectiveness of thes methodology are illustrated by a case study of the IEEE RTS.
In general, Diode rectifier has been applied to DC traction power supply system. Diode has some characteristics which is voltage drop in inverse proportion of load because of non-controlled switch, and cannot flow a current in reverse bias. So, voltage drop occurs frequently, and regenerated power cannot use in substation. The PWM rectifier is able to control output voltage constantly to reduce voltage drop and to use regeneration power without additional inverter. This paper proposes analysis algorithm for DC traction power supply system with PWM rectifier.
