  • We obtained a total of 36 GPS coordinates of the seven bat species of Rhinolophus ferrumequinum, Myotis ikonnikovi, M. nattereri, M. petax, Murina ussuriensis, Plecotus auritus, and Pipistrellus abramus. Characteristics of forests (forest type, age class, DBH class and crown density), terrain (aspect, slope and distance from mountain stream) and disturbance factors (distance from human residential areas and distance from cultivated areas) that bats have used as their habitats were revealed from the GIS analysis based on GPS coordinates of the 36 positions that bats were found. The bats-preferred forest type is broad-leaf forests (43%) with the trees of the 2th (31%) and 5th (31%) age class, the trees of sapling (36%) and large DBH class (31%), and sparse crown density (67%). Bats prefer the slop direction of the east (39%), the gradient below $15^{\circ}$ (61%), the ranges within 200 m from the mountain streams (92%), the ranges within 200 m near roads (89%), the ranges of 200-400 m from human residential areas (28%), and the ranges within 200 m from cultivated areas (36%).

  • To understand vegetation changes along environmental gradients in the natural forests in the east side of the Cascade Range in Washington state, USA, line transects were used to sample six different forest environments in the Wenatchee National Forest in the north-facing and south-facing sites at 975, 1280 and 1700m elevation. Data were analyzed using ordination by detranded correspondence analysis. Pseudotsuga menziesii was found as one of the dominant species on all the six sites regardless of elevation or aspect, while Pinus ponderosa was dominant on south slopes only. Abies grandis and A. lasiocarpa were dominant species on north slopes at elevations of 1280 and 1700m, respectively. Moisture, as it related to aspect, was identified as one of the most important environmental gradients for explaining the variation of vegetation types. On north-facing slopes, compared to south-facing slopes, where moisture was not as limiting and canopies could grow denser, probably, elevation or competitive interaction was more important. Species diversity tended to decrease with increasing environmental severity, with south slopes having less diversity than north slopes due to extended water stress and harsher temperature extremes on south slopes. The age structure on north-facing and south-facing slopes was different. Light intensity, moisture and climate were different between these two slopes. Large scale disturbances(e.g., big fire or insects) were major causes in changing age structure. Younger trees showed a closer relationship between size and age than adult trees. DBH values of shade intolerant species in south-facing slope were bigger than those of north-facing slope, which suggested that aspect of stands be the most important factor for age and size.

  • This study was conducted to offer preliminary data for forest management from March and December 2011. Based on the number of standing trees by DBH classes, it is recommended to practice thinning and pruning to change the current young stand to mature stand. In Livelihood Environment Forest Protected Areas, young (0-10 years or 0-10 cm DBH) and detected trees need to be removed and selected healthy trees need to be heavily tended. Also, selected trees in age 20-30 (20-30 cm DBH class) need to receive concentrated tending. Since Livelihood Environment Forest Protected Areas had been vulnerable for erosion, the diversity of understory layer is low. In order to diversify deciduous trees, it is recommended to introduce new species and thin and prune existing trees. It is not proper to adapt clear cutting in a short time and should be partially regenerated using shelter-wood method or proper tending practices to the Pinus rigida dominanted forest. Tending existing under-story species including Quercus alina, Quercus variabilis, and Quercus serrata would be important.

  • This study was performed to develope stem analysis program(Stemwin1.0) which can be used in PC with MS-Windows operating system. Stemwin1.0 uses width of annual tree ring measured with 1/100mm unit, and calculate increments of several growth factors such as DBH, height and volume with various methods. Mean DBH can be calculated by arithmetic and quadratic mean methods. Height can be estimated by parallel line, line extending and height curve methods. Volume can be estimated by Huber, Smalian, and Spline functions. Not only Total growth, Mean Annual Increment(MAI) and Current Annual Increment(CAI) of growth factors, but also merchantable volume and height, form factor, growth rate, and merchantable volume rate are automatically calculated. Stemwin1.0 can also output accurate stem taper curve with various scale, and prepare stem taper data(diameter at different disk heights) for statistical analysis for deriving stem taper model. Stemwin1.0 can export output data and graph to Excel for more compatible use of it.

  • This study was carried out to estimate above-ground biomass and inorganic nutrient distribution for a Camellia japonica stand located Mt. Cheon-gwan, Jeonnam province. Regression analysis of biomass for stem, current twig, branch and foliage versus diameter at breast height(DBH) was used to calculate regression equations of the form of logY = a + blogD(Y: component biomass, D: DBH). Total above-ground biomass for a Camellia japonica stand was 115.2 ton/ha(47.9 for main stem, 1.4 for current twig, 53.4 for live and dead branch, 5.6 for current foliage and 6.9 for ${\geq}1$-yr-old foliage). Component biomass was non-linearly correlated with DBH, and the difference in biomass between ${\geq}1$-yr-old and current foliage increased in proportion to DBH. Current foliage and live branch showed higher N, P and K concentrations compared to ${\geq}1$-yr-old foliage and dead branch, respectively. However, Ca concentration of current foliage and live branch was lower than that of ${\geq}1$-yr-old foliage and dead branch, respectively. Total above-ground inorganic nutrient contents(kg/ha) were distributed as follows; K: 366.4. N: 442.7, Ca: 433.3, Mg: 118.4, P: 50.5 and Na: 25.3. The proportions of inorganic nutrient content for live branch were generally the highest in all the inorganic nutrients.

  • The main purpose of this research is to provide scientific informations about standard wage and performance tariffs in forest management with special reference to working time for thinning. To identify relationships between net working time and tree characteristics, three geographically different sample plots were established at Yangsan, Bongpyung and Jinan and 460 oaks, 372 Japanese larches, 232 red pine and 240 pitch pine mere selected at each sample plots. The results of statistical analysis using multiple regression are as follows ; 1. Five independent variables of breast height diameter(DBH), mid-diameter(MD) large end diameter(LD), log-length(L), No. of branches(NOB) were stable independent of worker and tree species. 2. Comparing correlation coefficient of five independent variables, the best predictive variables, breast height diameter and No. of branches, were selected. Breast height diameter and No. of branches were identified as the most important independent variables in terms of effect on the dependent variable of the working time. 3. Comparing coefficient of determination (Rp) and residual mean square (MSEp), the best Linear regression equation for each tree species was selected as follower : $WT=a+b1{\times}NOB+b2{\times}DBF$ 4. Proportion of hang-up time to total working time in thinning were 66% in oak stand, 74%, in Japanese larch stand, 55%, in red pine stand and 52% in pitch pine stand, respectively. 5. Based on the best regression equation, a table of working time was made by strata of number of branches and breast height diameter. 6. Total working time using the best regression equation in Table 5 can be predicted in terms of felling time, limbing time, hang-up time, i.e., total working time increases by 11 to 13 seconds with every 1 centimeter increase in breast height diameter from 7 to 16 centimeter.

  • The National Forestry Inventory of Korea has started the 7th (2016 ~ 2020) survey from the first (1972 ~ 1974) National Forest Situation Survey. The diameter at breast height was measured using a diameter tape, and the tree height was measured using a hypsometer in the National Forestry Inventory of Korea from the 1st to recently the 7th surveying. In the case of the diameter tape, however, irregularly shaped trees may cause a large error. In the case of a hypsometer, the height may be measured indirectly in 10 cm increments to the front edge of the tree, so that the accuracy may be lowered. This paper suggests the use of SLAM to improve the accuracy and advance forest investigations. For this purpose, a test bed for the measurement of DBH and tree height was set up, and the scan data was acquired directly using SLAM equipment. The accuracy of DBH and tree height measurements were analyzed. As a result, it was possible to calculate directly the DBH and tree height to 1mm unit, and it showed that the DBH accuracy of 2cm or less and the accuracy of the tree height accuracy of 1.3cm or less are sufficient for practical use. Based on the results, the scan data will be acquired for sample points and analyzed.

  • This study was carried out to analyze forest vegetation in Seodaesan of Geumsan, Chungnam Province. Employing the releve method of Braun-Blanquet and quadrat method, 36 plots were sampled in forest of Seodaesan. The sub-communities were classified into Pinus densiflora, Acer pseudosieboldianum, and Carpinus laxiflora sub-community of Quercus mongolica community. The importance values were 77.07 in Quercus mongolica, 40.79 in Pinus densiflora, 17.03 Fraxinus rhynchophylla, 14.06 in Fraxinus sieboldiana, 13.99 in Quercus serrata, 12.93 Acer pseudosiebotdianum. Coverage rate was 84.6% in tree layer, 52.8% in subtree layer, 29.1% in shrub layer, 27.9% in herb layer, respectively. Most of the DBH of Quercus mongolica and Pinus densiflora was between 5cm and 20cm. Therefore, Quercus mongolica and Pinus densiflora might be dominant species in the study area for several decades. Acer pseudosieboldianum and Carpinus laxiflora sub-communities were distributed mainly in a high-altitude and northern and north-western area. Pinus densiflora sub-community was distributed mainly in a low-altitude and western area.
