  • Pilomatricoma is a benign soft tissue tumor of hair follicle origin. They occur most commonly in the head and neck region and are usually found in girls during the first two decades of life. Although malignant transformation has been described, it is exceedingly rare. The clinical presentation is typically that of an asymptomatic, superfical, solitary, firm mass that is often accompanied by a reddish-blue discoloration of the overlying skin. Histopathologically pilomatricoma are seen as epithelial islands embedded in a cellular stroma. The epithelial component consist of two main cell types : basaloid cells and ghost cells. Intracellular and stromal calcification is reported in many cases. Diagnosis is usually suspected based on palpation of a superficial, rock-hard mass and confirmed by histopathologic examination. Surgical excision is both curative and the treatment of choice. Recurrence is rare. In this case, the radiographs showed a dense calcification, measuring about 1cm diameter. So simple excision was peformed intraorally, and resultantly the lesion was proved to be a pilomatricoma by histological examination.

  • To know the features of Amyloodinium sp. parasitized in Black seabream, Acanthopagrus schlegeli, morphology and reproduction type of the parasite were investigated. Infection mode and histopathology of the parasites were also studied. In the developmental and morphological observation, the parasite passed through parasitic and non-parasitic phases with three developmental stages termed trophont, tomont, and dinospore. The trophont, 30-$80{\mu}m$ ovoidal or pyriform, for the vegetative stage had a spherical nucleus with $1.5{\mu}m$ in diameter, many food vacuoles and starch grains in cytoplasm. The tomont, 80-$90{\mu}m$ spherical, for the reproductive stage resorbed a stalk, secreted a cyst wall and reproduced within it. A dinospore, small 10-$15{\mu}m$ biflagellated, for the infestation stage had a stigma. The parasite was propagated for 15 days by serial passage in Korean rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli) at $25{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. Trophonts began to detach from the fish about 3 days after infection and was completed within 5 days at $25{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. It took from 3 to 5 days to reproduce at the same temperature. Reinfected fish showed that parasites penetrated under the epithelia of gill filament and gill lamellae causing hyperplasia and degeneration at infected area.

  • Although oncospheres of Taenia saginata asiatica can develop into cysticerci in immunodeficiency, immunosuppressed, and normal mice, no detailed information on the development features of these cysticerci from SCID mice is available. In the present study, the tumor-like cyst was found in the subcutaneous tissues of each of 10 SCID mice after 38-244 days inoculation with 39,000 oncospheres of T. s. asiatica. These cysts weighed 2.0-9.6 gm and were 1.5-4.3 cm in diameter. The number of cysticerci were collected from these cysts ranged from 125 to 1,794 and the cysticercus recovery rate from 0.3% to 4.6%. All cysticerci were viable with a diameter of 1-6 mm and 9 abnormal ones each with 2 evaginated protoscoleces were also found. The mean length and width of scolex, protoscolex, and bladder were $477{\;}{\times}{\;}558,{\;}756{\;}{\times}{\;}727,{\;}and{\;}1,586{\;}{\times}{\;}1,615{\;}$\mu\textrm{m}$, respectively. The diameters of suckers and rostellum were $220{\mu\textrm{m}}{\;}and{\;}70\mu\textrm{m}$, respectively All cysticerci had two rows of rostellar hooks. These findings suggest that the SCID mouse model can be employed as a tool for long-term maintenance of the biological materials for advanced studies of immunodiagnosis, vaccine development, and evaluation of cestocidal drugs which would be most benefit for the good health of the livestocks.

  • Fifty-two cases of traumatic bone cysts in 50 patients were analysed clinically and radiologically. The obtained results were as follows; 1. Women showed a slightly higher incidence than did men (56% of patients) and the average age proved to be 18.6 years. 2. The majority of the cases were asymptomatic. being detected incidentally. and over the half of the cases occurred in the mandibular symphyseal region. 3. All cases were unilocular and the largest diameter of the lesions varied from 1 to 10㎝, mean 3㎝. 4. Some degree of marginal condensation was present in 28 cases and 23 cases presented pencil-sketch appearance. 5. Many anatomical cortical plates (especially, mandibular inferior cortex and lamina durae) consisted of the margin of the lesions partly. 6. Erosive change of the mandibular inferior cortex was caused by 12 cysts, but cortical expansion only by 3 cysts including 2 cases of buccal expansion. 7. The lesion enveloped the roots of the adjacent teeth in 27 cases and scalloping was present between roots in 17 cases. 8. Lamina dura of the teeth was destroyed by only 1 cyst, and in 1 case root resorption was noticed. But there was no divergence of the roots of teeth.

  • On September in 2010, myxosporidian parasites were found on the fins of Chinese muddy loach, Misgurnus mizolepis, Several cysts of approximately 2 mm diameter were observed on the fins. Numerous spores were found in the cyst. The total length of the spore was 13.0 to 15.8 ${\mu}m$, and the width of spore was 6.0 to 7.5 ${\mu}m$. As the results, the myxosporidians were finally identified as Thelohanellus misgurni (Kudo, 1919) on the basis of the presence of characteristic cysts and size of spores.

  • Extremely massive sellar xanthogranuloma (XG) are rare, and the surgical outcome and prognosis are not well known. XG remain unknown whether they are derived from Rathke's cleft cysts (RCCs) or craniopharyngiomas (CPs) following extensive inflammation and metaplasia, to the point that no epithelium is readily identifiable. These lesions usually tend to occur in younger patients (mean 28.3 years), have a smaller diameter, and remain primarily intrasellar region with infrequent calcification. This 36-year-old man presented our hospital with visual deterioration. At the time of visit, there were no neurological problems other than visual field defect and hormonal disorder. He visited our hospital in 2007 due to headache and decreased vision, and underwent transphenoid surgery for pituitary RCC. Since then, he has received treatment at our hospital for postoperative hormonal disorders. Through preoperative imaging study, the author suspected CP and underwent surgery. During the operation, the adhesion of the tumor to the surrounding major neurovascular structures was severe in the naked eyes, but the tumor could be removed more easily than expected. The postoperative histological findings were confirmed as XG. The postoperative course was uneventful. Compared to the previous literature, this case is a case where the size of XG is very large in a sellar region and it can be proved that it originated from the RCC. And regular follow-up is necessary to confirm the prognosis after surgery.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the volumetric characteristics of mucous retention cysts(MRCs) in the maxillary sinus and to analyze potential associations of MRCs with dentoalveolar pathologies. Materials and Methods: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans exhibiting bilateral maxillary sinuses that were acquired from January 2016 to February 2019 were initially screened. A total of 227 scans(454 sinuses) that fulfilled the inclusion criteria were included. The presence, location, and volumetric characteristics of the diagnosed MRCs were evaluated on CBCT images using the 3D-Slicer software platform. The presence of MRCs was correlated with potential influencing factors including age, sex, and dentoalveolar pathology. For MRCs located on the sinus floor, factors with a potential impact on the volume, surface, and diameter were analyzed. Results: An MRC was present in 130 (28.6%) of the 454 sinuses. Most MRCs were located on the sinus walls and floor. The mean MRC volume, surface, and diameter were 551.21±1368.04 mm3, 228.09±437.56 mm2, and 9.63±5.40 mm, respectively. Significantly more sinuses with associated endodontically treated teeth/periapical lesions were diagnosed with an MRC located on the sinus floor. For MRCs located on the sinus floor, endodontic status exhibited a significant association with increased volume, surface, and diameter. Conclusion: Periapical lesions might be a contributing factor associated with the presence and volume of MRCs located on the sinus floor. The 3D-Slicer software platform was found to be a useful tool for clinicians to analyze the size of MRCs before surgical interventions such as sinus floor elevation procedures.

  • Some infertile patients who need IVF-ET for conception have small ovarian cysts diagnosed in pelvic ultrasonography. It is well known that it is impossible or very difficult to perform controlled ovarian hyperstimulation(COH) for such patients because of the poor ovarian response or the possibility of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome(OHSS). To remove or to decrease the size of ovarian cysts, estrogen and progesterone (E-P) therapy with oral contraceptives for 2 cycles and transvaginal aspiration of ovarian cysts using transvaginal ultrasonography were performed in 36 IVF-cancelled infertile patients with ovarian cysts from February to October, 1988 at Seoul National University Hospital. Thirty-nine ovarian cysts($32.8{\pm}9.6$mm in mean diameter) were treated with E-P therapy, and their size decreased to $28.2{\pm}11.0mm$ after 1 cycle and significantly to $24.8{\pm}14.7mm$ after 2 cycles. After E-P therapy for 2 cycles, 7(17.9%) ovarian cysts disappeared in ultrasonography, 9(23.1%) decreased in size significantly, 18(46.2%) had no change in size and 5(12.8%) increased in size. Thirty-two ovarian cysts($30.2{\pm}9.7mm$) in 30 patients were aspirated transvaginally, and there was no significant decrease in size after follow-up transvaginal ultrasonography($27.8{\pm}12.5mm$). After transvaginal aspiration, 3(9.4%) ovarian cysts disappeared and 28(87.5%) had no change in size. The mean amount of the transvaginally aspirated cystic fluids was $19.6{\pm}13.2ml$, and there was no malignant cells in aspiration cytology. Four endometrioid cysts, one dermoid cyst and one mucinous cyst could be diagnosed in consideration of the findings of transvaginal ultrasonography and the characteristics and cytology of aspirated fluids. Therefore E-P therapy and transvaginal aspiration of ovarian cysts had made it possible to restart IVF program earlier in the IVF-cancelled patients with ovarian cysts.
