  • The primary objective of this study is to analyze the free vibration behavior of a sandwich cylindrical shell with a defective core and wavy carbon nanotube (CNT)-enhanced face sheets, utilizing the three-dimensional theory of elasticity. The intricate equations of motion for the structure are solved semi-analytically using the generalized differential quadrature method. The shell structure consists of a damaged isotropic core and two external face sheets. The distributions of CNTs are either functionally graded (FG) or uniform across the thickness, with their mechanical properties determined through an extended rule of mixture. In this research, the conventional theory regarding the mechanical effectiveness of a matrix embedding finite-length fibers has been enhanced by introducing tube-to-tube random contact. This enhancement explicitly addresses the progressive reduction in the tubes' effective aspect ratio as the filler content increases. The study investigates the influence of a damaged matrix, CNT distribution, volume fraction, aspect ratio, and waviness on the free vibration characteristics of the sandwich cylindrical shell with wavy CNT-reinforced face sheets. Unlike two-dimensional theories such as classical and the first shear deformation plate theories, this inquiry is grounded in the three-dimensional theory of elasticity, which comprehensively accounts for transverse normal deformations.

  • A viscoelastic finite element analysis is presented to investigate residual stresses occurred in a laminated cylindrical shell during cure. An incremental viscoelastic constitutive equation that can describe stress relaxation during the cure is derived as a recursive formula which can be used conveniently for a numerical analysis. The finite element analysis program is developed on the basis of a 3-D degenerated shell element and the first order shear deformation theory, and is verified by comparing with an one dimensional exact solution. Viscoelastic effect on the residual stresses in the laminated shell during the cure is investigated by performing both the viscoelastic and linear elastic analyses considering thermal deformation and chemical shrinkage simultaneously. The results show that there is big difference between viscoelastic stresses and linear elastic stresses. The effect of cooling rates and cooling paths on the residual stresses is also examined.

  • The analytical solutions for the free vibration of cross-ply laminated composite cyllindrical shell with axial stiffeners(stringers) are presented usint the energy method. The stiffeners are taken to be smeared over the surface of shell with the smeared stffener theory. The effect of the parameters such as the stacking sequences, the shell thichness, the shell radius-to stringer depth ratio, the stringer depth-to width ratio, the shell length-to radius ratio are studied. By comparison with the previously published experimental results and the analytical results for the stiffened isotropic cylindrical shell and the unstiffened orthotropic composite laminated cylindrical shell, it is shown that natural frequencies can be determined with adequate accuracy.

  • The dynamic instability of cylindrical shell with clamped-free boundary condition subjected to constant follower force or $P_0 + P_1cos {\Omega}_t$ type pulsating follower force is analyzed. The motion of shell is modeled using the shell theory considering rotary inertia and shear deformation, and analyzed with finite element method. In case of constant follower force, the changes of eigenvalues dependent on the magnitude of applied load are investigated and the critical loads are obtained. In case pulsating follower force, instability regions of exicitation frequency are obtained by modal transform with right and left modal matrix and by multiple scales method. The effects of thickness ratio and aspect ratio on the instability of shell are studied.

  • In this paper, we formulated algorithm for free vibration analysis of cylindrical shells with stiffeners by applying the transfer influence coefficient method. This was developed as a vibration analysis method suitable for using personal computer(PC). The simple computational results form PC demonstrated the validity of the present algorithm, that is, the computational high accuracy and speed, and the flexibility of programming. We compared with results of the transfer matrix method and the reference. We also confirmed that the present algorithm could provide the solutions of high accuracy for system with a lots of intermediate rigid supports and stiffeners. And all boundary conditions and the intermediate stiff supports between shell and foundation could be treated only by adequately varying the values of the spring constants.

  • The bending buckling behavior of circular cylindrical shell is studied. The classical analysis by Love type solution and the package program LUSAS for the structural analysis are used to estimate the critical stresses of circular cylindrical shells under axial compression and bending loads. In this paper, the Love type of buckling equation is carefully investigated and numerical results are presented for a wide range of radius-to-thickness (R/t) ratios and length-to-radius (L/R) ratios. These results show that the maximum critical bending stress is about 30~80% greater than the critical compressive stress

  • This study considers the buckling of orthotropic cylindrical thin shells with material nonhomogeneity in the thickness direction, under torsion, which is a power function of time. The dynamic stability and compatibility equations are obtained first. Applying Galerkin's method then applying Ritz type variational method to these equations and taking the large values of loading parameters into consideration, analytic solutions are obtained for critical parameter values. Using those results, the effects of the periodic and power variations of Young's moduli and density, ratio of Young's moduli variations, loading parameters variations and the power of time in the torsional load expression variations are studied via pertinent computations. It is concluded that all these factors contribute to appreciable effects on the critical parameters of the problem in question.

  • The impact behaviour and the impact-induced damage in laminated composite cylindrical shell subjected to transverse impact by a foreign object are studied using three-dimensional non-linear transient dynamic finite element formulation. A layered version of 20 noded hexahedral element incorporating geometrical non-linearity is developed based on total Langragian approach. Non-linear system of equations resulting from non-linear strain displacement relation and non-linear contact loading are solved using Newton-Raphson incremental-iterative method. Some example problems of graphite/epoxy cylindrical shell panels are considered with variation of impactor and laminate parameters and influence of geometrical non-linear effect on the impact response and the resulting damage is investigated.

  • In current study, utilizing the Kelvin's theory with polynomial, exponential and trigonometric volume fraction laws for functionally graded cylindrical shell vibrations. Effects of different parameters for ratios of length- and height-to-radius and angular speed versus fundamental natural frequencies been determined for two categories of cylindrical shells with clamped-free edge condition. By increasing different value of height-to-radius ratio, the resulting backward and forward frequencies increase and frequencies decrease on increasing length-to-radius ratio. Moreover, on increasing the rotating speed, the backward frequencies increases and forward frequencies decreases. The frequencies are same when the cylinder is stationary. The frequencies increases and decreases on changing the constituent materials. The frequency results are verified with the earlier literature for the applicability of present model.

  • A state-space method is developed to investigate the time-dependent behaviors of an angle-ply cylindrical shell in cylindrical bending with surface-bonded piezoelectric layers. Both the interfacial diffusion and sliding are considered to describe the properties of the imperfect interfaces. Particularly, a matrix reduction technique is adopted to establish the transfer relations between the elastic and piezoelectric layers of the laminated shell. Very different from our previous paper, in which an approximate numerical technique, i.e. power series expansion method, is used to deal with the time-dependent problems, the exact solutions are derived in the present analysis based on the piezoelasticity equations without any assumptions. Numerical results are finally obtained and the effects of imperfect interfaces on the electro-mechanical responses of the laminated shell are discussed.
