This paper investigates the underwater acoustic radiation from a periodically stiffened cylindrical shell excited resiliently mounted machinery. Underwater acoustic radiation is important to a submarine. Generally, submarine structure can be modeled as stiffened cylindrical shell immersed in water. Analytical model is derived for the far-field acoustic radiation from machinery installed inside cylindrical shell. The analytical model includes the effect of fluid loading and interactions between periodic ring stiffeners. Transmitted force from machine to a shell through isolator can be different by the impedance of shell. In this paper the effect of a shell impedance for acoustic radiation is investigated. Impedance of a shell should be considered if thickness of a shell is thin.
Bi-stable structure can be stable in both its extended and coiled forms. For the un-stressed thin cylindrical shell, the strain energy expressions are deduced by using a theoretical model in terms of only two parameters. Based on the principle of minimum potential energy, the bi-stable behaviors of the cylindrical shells are investigated. The results indicate that the isotropic cylindrical shell does not have the second stable configuration and laminated cylindrical shells with symmetric or antisymmetric layup of fibers have the second stable state under some confined conditions. In the case of antisymmetric laminated cylindrical shell, the analytical expressions of the stability are derived based on the extremal principle, and the shell can achieve a compact coiled configuration without twist deformation in its second stable state. In the case of symmetric laminated cylindrical shell, the explicit solutions for the stability conditions cannot be deduced. Numerical results show that stable configuration of symmetric shell is difficult to achieve and symmetric shell has twist deformation in its second stable form. In addition, the roll-up radii of the antisymmetric laminated cylindrical shells are calculated using the finite element package ABAQUS. The results show that the value of the roll-up radii is larger from FE simulation than from theoretical analysis. By and large, the predicted roll-up radii of the cylindrical shells using ABAQUS agree well with the theoretical results.

The receptance method was applied for the analysis of a cylindrical shell with a curvaturated plate attached at the top of the shell. The boundary conditions of the shell considered here were clamped at the bottom and free at the top of the shell. Before the analysis of the shell/plate combined structure, the natural frequencies of the plate and the shell were calculated separately and then they were used in the calculation of the frequencies of the combined structure by the receptance method. The frequency equation of the combined structure was derived from the continuity condition at the junction of the shell and the plate. The frequencies for various curvature factors of the plate were presented and compared with those from ANSYS to show its validity of the present method.
The general approach using sine series expansions was represented to evaluate the radiation loading from a vibrating surface on a simply supported cylinder. In this paper, the fluid-loading coefficients (radiation impedance) for a submerged finite cylindrical shell with an arbitrary end condition are defined and evaluated. The vibrations of cylindrical shell are expressed by using cosine series expansions to analyze the radiation impedance for a finite cylindrical shell. It is possible to represent the displacements at both ends of cylindrical shell in comparison with sine series. The direct and cross modal components of fluid-loading coefficients are shown and the validity of cosine series expansions are verified from the results of numerical computations. This approach and results are directly applicable in the analysis of sound radiation from subemerged finite cylindrical shell with arbitrary end conditions.
The cylindrical shells are mainly used in the nuclear energy structure, pressure vessel, boiler and so on. When designing of shell structures, predicting the structure change under variety boundary conditions are necessary for estimating the safety. Design variables for the design engineer include multiple material systems and boundary conditions, in addition to overall structural design parameters. Since the vibration of stiffened cylindrical shell is an important consideration for structures design, the reliable prediction method and design methodology should be required. In this study, the optimum design of stiffened cylindrical shell for maximum natural frequency was studied by analytic and numerical method.

Buckling of cylindrical structures has been extensively researched, because it is an important phenomenon to be considered in structural design. However, the evaluation of thermal effects on the buckling of cylindrical structures has been insufficient; therefore, this study evaluates this thermal effect using shell elements. In addition, the thermal effect on the buckling of temperature-dependent nonlinear materials was evaluated. Nonlinear and linear buckling analyses were performed using the arc-length method to investigate the behavioral characteristics of a cylindrical structure. The basic theory of the linear buckling analysis of a cylindrical structure subjected to thermal stress was derived and presented by applying the thermal stress basic theory.
The Cylindrical Shell Equation is one of the fundamental tools in the study of the noise analysis in the cylindrical shell. Therefore, lot of the acousticians induced many cylindrical shell motion equations.[1] In the Reference[6], we introduced the newly induced cylindrical Shell Equation and Junger and Feit's shell equation[5], and computed the free wave number with the linear Equation with the supposed solution, in the case of the free motion of the shell. In this paper, we compared above cylindrical shell equations by using dispersion curve of free wave number and we describe the physical mean for the dispersion curve with ring-frequency and ring-extention-frequency. With this result, we proves the useful of a newly induced cylindrical shell equation and we can analyse the Structure-Borne Sound of the shell with this equation in the application.
Theoretical study of vibration distinctiveness of rotating cylindrical are examined for three volume fraction laws viz.: polynomial, exponential and trigonometric. These laws control functionally graded material composition in the shell radius direction. Functionally graded materials are controlled from two or more materials. In practice functionally graded material comprised of two constituent materials is used to form a cylindrical shell. For the current shell problem stainless steel and nickel are used for the shell structure. A functionally graded cylindrical shell is sanctioned into two types by interchanging order of constituent materials from inner and outer side for Type I and Type II cylindrical shell arrangement. Fabric composition of a functionally graded material in a shell thickness direction is controlled by volume fraction law. Variation of power law exponent brings change in frequency values. Influence of this physical change is investigated to evade future complications. This procedure is capable to cater any boundary condition by changing the axial wave number. But for simplicity, numerical results have been evaluated for clamped- simply supported rotating cylindrical shells. It has been observed from these results that shell frequency is bifurcated into two parts: one is related to the backward wave and other with forward wave. It is concluded that the value of backward frequency is some bit higher than that forward frequency. Influence of volume fraction laws have been examined on shell frequencies. Backward and forward frequency curves for a volume fraction law are upper than those related to two other volume fraction laws. The results generated furnish the evidence regarding applicability of present shell model and also verified by earlier published literature.

The free vibration characteristics of fluid-filled cylindrical shells on partial elastic foundations are investigated by an analytical method. The cylindrical shell is fully or partially surrounded by the elastic foundations, these are represented by the Winkler or Pasternak model. The motion of shell is represented by the first order shear deformation theory to account for rotary inertia and transverse shear strains. The steady flow of fluid is described by the classical potential flow theory. The fluid-structure interaction is considered in the analysis. The effect of internal fluid can be considered by imposing a relation between the fluid pressure and the radial displacement of the structure at the interface. To validate the present method, the numerical example is presented and compared with the available existing results.
Nonlinear vibration and instability of cylindrical shell conveying fluid-nanoparticles mixture flow are studied in this article. The surrounding elastic medium is modeled by Pasternak foundation. Mixture rule is used for obtaining the effective viscosity and density of the fluid-nanoparticles mixture flow. The material properties of the elastic medium and cylindrical shell are assumed temperature-dependent. Employing first order shear deformation theory (FSDT), the motion equations are derived using energy method and Hamilton's principal. Differential quadrature method (DQM) is used for obtaining the frequency and critical fluid velocity. The effects of different parameters such as volume percent of nanoparticles, boundary conditions, geometrical parameters of cylindrical shell, temperature change, elastic foundation and fluid velocity are shown on the frequency and critical fluid velocity of the structure. Results show that with increasing volume percent of nanoparticles in the fluid, the frequency and critical fluid velocity will be increases.
