  • As wireless communication functions begin to be installed in vehicles, cyberattacks that exploit vulnerabilities in wireless communication functions are increasing. To respond to this, UNECE enacted the UN R156 regulation to safely distribute the software installed in the vehicle by using the wireless communication function. The regulations specify the requirements necessary to safely distribute the software for vehicles, but only the abstract requirements are presented without information on the components and detailed functions necessary to develop and implement the requirements. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a security evaluation standard that can evaluate whether a safe SUMS is built using threat modeling, a method for systematically analyzing security threats.

  • The introduction of smart grid, which is an innovative application of digital processing and communications to the power grid, might lead to more and more cyber threats originated from IT systems. In other words, The Energy Management System (EMS) and other communication networks interact with the power system on a real time basis, so it is important to understand the interaction between two layers to protect the power system from potential cyber threats. This paper aims to identify and clarify the cyber security risks and their interaction with the power system in Smart Grid. In this study, the optimal power flow (OPF) and Power Flow Tracing are used to assess the interaction between the EMS and the power system. Through OPF and Power Flow Tracing based analysis, the physical and economic impacts from potential cyber threats are assessed, and thereby the quantitative risks are measured in a monetary unit.

  • Smart grid (SG) software platforms and communication networks that run and manage the entire grid are increasingly concerned about cyber security. Characteristics of the smart grid networks, including heterogeneity, time restrictions, bandwidth, scalability, and other factors make it difficult to secure. The age-old strategy of "building bigger walls" is no longer sufficient given the rise in the quantity and size of cyberattacks as well as the sophisticated methods threat actor uses to hide their actions. Cyber security experts utilize technologies and procedures to defend IT systems and data from intruders. The primary objective of every organization's cybersecurity team is to safeguard data and information technology (IT) infrastructure. Consequently, further research is required to create guidelines and methods that are compatible with smart grid security. In this study, we have discussed objectives of of smart grid security, challenges of smart grid security, defensive cybersecurity techniques, offensive cybersecurity techniques and open research challenges of cybersecurity.

  • Damage caused by ransomware has continued to increase since last year, but cyber operations are managed without any separate classification of ransomware types in the military's guidelines for carrying out cyber operations. However, unlike other malware, ransomware is a threat that could paralyze all defense operations in one moment, and the military should reevaluate ransomware and take countermeasures. Accordingly, this paper aims to analyze the assets, vulnerabilities, and threats related to defense information service based on information security risk management, and propose alternatives to ensure continuity of defense work from ransomware threats.

  • We propose an APT attack scoring method as a part of the process for detecting and responding to APT attacks. First, unlike previous work that considered inconsistent and subjective factors determined by cyber security experts in the process of scoring cyber attacks, we identify quantifiable factors from components of MITRE ATT&CK techniques and propose a method of quantifying each identified factor. Then, we propose a method of calculating the score of the unit attack technique from the quantified factors, and the score of the entire APT attack composed of one or more multiple attack techniques. We present the possibility of quantification to determine the threat level and urgency of cyber attacks by applying the proposed scoring method to the APT attack reports, which contains the hundreds of APT attack cases occurred worldwide. Using our work, it will be possible to determine whether actual cyber attacks have occurred in the process of detecting APT attacks, and respond to more urgent and important cyber attacks by estimating the priority of APT attacks.

  • The emergence of new technologies and devices brings a new environment in the field of cyber security. It is not easy to predict possible security threats about new environment every time without special criteria. In other words, most malicious codes often reuse malicious code that has occurred in the past, such as bypassing detection from anti-virus or including additional functions. Therefore, we are predicting the security threats that can arise in a new environment based on the history of repeated malicious code. In this paper, we classify and define not only the internal information obtained from malicious code analysis but also the features that occur during infection and attack. We propose a method to predict and manage security threats in new environment by continuously managing and extending.

  • As the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution has progressed and the information and communication technologies have developed dramatically, the cyber threats will gradually become more intelligent and sophisticated. Therefore, in order to take systematic and prompt action in case of an accident while preparing measures against the threat, the role of intelligence agency is important. However, Korea is having difficulty in responding to the threats due to the lack of support for the national cybersecurity bill or the amendment bill of the National Intelligence Service. In this paper, I examine the cybersecurity function of the intelligence agency, the recent debate trends, and implications for the role of intelligence agency in our current situation. And then I intend to suggest some measures such as concentration on information gathering and analysis, enhancement of cyber threat prediction and response capacity, and strengthening of legal basis as a way to establish the role of intelligence agency for reinforcement of cybersecurity performance system.

  • In this paper, we presented a dynamic cyber attack tree which can describe an attack scenario flexibly for an active cyber attack model could be detected complex and transformed attack method. An attack tree provides a formal and methodical route of describing the security safeguard on varying attacks against network system. The existent attack tree can describe attack scenario as using vertex, edge and composition. But an attack tree has the limitations to express complex and new attack due to the restriction of attack tree's attributes. We solved the limitations of the existent attack tree as adding an threat occurrence probability and 2 components of composition in the attributes. Firstly, we improved the flexibility to describe complex and transformed attack method, and reduced the ambiguity of attack sequence, as reinforcing composition. And we can identify the risk level of attack at each attack phase from child node to parent node as adding an threat occurrence probability.

  • Recently, the fourth industrial revolution technology has not only changed everyday life greatly through technological development, but has also become a major keyword in the establishment of defense policy. In particular, Internet of Things, cloud, big data, mobile and cybersecurity technologies, called ICBMS, were selected as core leading technologies in defense information policy along with artificial intelligence. Amid the growing importance of the fourth industrial revolution technology, research is being carried out to develop the C4I system, which is currently operated separately by the Joint Chiefs of Staff and each military, including the KJCCS, ATCIS, KNCCS and AFCCS, into an integrated system in preparation for future warfare. This is to solve the problem of reduced interoperability for joint operations, such as information exchange, by operating the C4I system for each domain. In addition, systems such as the establishment of an integrated C4I system and the U.S. military's Risk Management Framework (RMF) are essential for efficient control and safe operation of weapons systems as they are being developed into super-connected and super-intelligent systems. Therefore, in this paper, the intelligent cyber threat detection, management of users' access to information, and intelligent management and visualization of cyber threat are presented in the future C4I system based on big data/cloud.
