  • 1. Title of Research Research on the Loss of Irrigation Water Flowing in Earth Channel. 2. Purpose and Importance of Research The purpose of this research is to obtain the accurate loss rated of irrigation water flowing in earth channels so as to give a criterion of designing rational and effective suplpy project of irrigations water. It is the present status that the loss rates of 10 to 20% are obscurely applied without any scientific proof. Therefore, the importance of this research lies in securing loss rates, which are experimentally proves to be suitable for specific local conditions. 3. Content and Scope of Research The selected test reach of the main channel is 1,000m long. Discharges were measured at up and downstream enps by using current meter. The test reach of the lateral channel is 500m long, and parshall flumes were set at both ends to measure inflow and outflow. Finally, for the supply ditch, the test section is 200m long, and sharp-edged rectangular weirs were provided at both ends to measure inflow and outflow. In addition, various factors influence on the loss of irrigation water in channel wer examined. 4. Results of Research and Proposition Results: 1. In the main channel, which is 1,000 M long, and has a slope of 1/3,000 and was constructed by cutting earth, its loss rate is 9.64%. 2. In the lateral, which has a slope of 1/1,500, and is 500m long, and was constructed by cutting, its loss rate is 15.55%. Its average seepage rate is 2.08cm/day. 3. In the supply ditch, which has a slope of 1/300, and is 200m long, and was constructed by filling earth, its loss rate is 12.34%, its average seepage rate being 3.37cm/day. Proposition: As could be seen in the results above-mentioned, it is contradictory to apply a loss rate of 20% for every main channels and 15% for every laterals without variation, as done so for in planning irrigation project. The fact, however, is that loss rates must be different according to localities and characteristics. Due to the fact that this experiment is small in its scope and is nothing but a preliminary one, it is hardly possible to draw decisive conclusions with the results obtained in this research. Loss rates, that are secured through more extensive research, should be used, in order to establish precise irrigation project. Moreover, such researches should be carried out for a number of loclities throughout the nation.

  • In Korea, mowing the grass of a grave (Beolcho) is a very important event preceded by Chuseok (Korean thanks giving day) and Si-Hyang (annual ancestral feast). Because Beolcho usually takes place one or two weeks before Chuseok, the traffic accidents on roads are getting worse and safety accidents are getting more and more. Erroneous Beolcho methods can cause the soil to be exposed and cause the loss of soil or the low shoot density of graveyard grass or weed occurrence. Therefore, the dispersion of the Beolcho timing and the approprite method can be import issues. The present study assessed the effects of grass mowing timing and height before Chuseok on the growth of Zoysia japonica and Z. matrella. The mowing timing was evaluated at 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, and 4 weeks before Chuseok, and the mowing height differently according to the two type of grass. In Z. japonica, the faster mowing before Chuseok, the longer the plant height, and the coverage rate and shoot density were higher. In Z. matrella, the faster mowing, the longer the shoot length, but the coverage rate and shoot density did not show any difference or tendency. As compared to Z. japonica, the plant height of Z. matrella was kept short regardless of the time of mowing. In both grasses, the plant height was shortened when mowing was done at low cutting height, but the coverage rate and shoot density were decreased. In addition, it was shown that it is advantageous to maintain the shoot density of graveyard lawn by 40-50 mm or 30-40 mm cutting above the ground for Z. japonica or Z. matrella, respectively.

  • The analytical conditions including surface state, moisture effect, and device condition were investigated for applying Short Wave Infrared(SWIR) spectroscopy to the field survey. Among the three surface state of samples (exposed surface, cutting face and powder), both spectra from the exposed surface and cutting face are almost identical whereas spectral variation was detected in powder sample. Over 24-hours-dryring of the wet sample at room temperature, the samples show a similar spectrum with that of dry condition. The result suggests that outcrop samples mighty be dried for 24 ~ 48 hours depending on the wetness of outcrop. The bright minerals could produce stable spectra with 10 times measurements as default value of the device under SWIR spectroscopy but the dark minerals would require about 10 seconds, which corresponds to 100 times measurements to get the reliable spectra. The position and shape 2,160 ~ 2,330 nm and/or other spectral features of hydrothermal alteration minerals by SWIR spectroscopy could be used for a classification of hydrothermal alteration zone in the field. Absorption peaks in 2,160 ~ 2180 nm are useful for identifying (advanced) argillic zone by spectral characteristics of kaoline, dickite, pyrophyllite, and alunite. Absorption peaks in 2,180 ~ 2,230 nm are able to define muscovite, sericite, and smectite, which are key alteration minerals in phyllic zone. Absorption peaks in 2,230 ~ 2,270 nm can be used to recognize prophylitic zone where chlorite and epidote occur. Absorption peaks of other principle minerals such as talc, serpentine, amphibole, and carbonate group are mainly detected within the wave length of 2,270 ~ 2,330 nm. This result indicates that the spectra of these minerals need to be carefully interpreted.

  • This study was carried out to compare the pattern of mutant variation and to evaluate the characteristics of mutants obtained by gamma irradiation in rose 'Kardinal'. Forty four rooted cuttings of 'Kardinal' were irradiated at 70 Gy gamma-ray dose from a $^{60}Co$ source to induce mutants in 2002. The irradiated plants were planted in field, and observed spotting of petal color mutants from 2002 to 2004. Four different kinds of mutant twigs with each different color flower were obtained from the irradiated 'Kardinal' with red petal. After being identified to be a stable mutant from 2004 to 2008, each mutant line propagated by cutting was hydroponic-cultured to evaluate the characteristics in the greenhouse from 2008 to 2009. Four mutant lines obtained from 'Kardinal' with red petal (Red group, 44A, 45B) include KA1 with light pink petal (Red group, 55B-55D), KA2 with pink petal (Red group, 63A-63B), KA3 with deep pink (Red purple, N57A-N57C), and KA4 with orange red (Red group, 43A-43B). Diameters of each flower in four mutant lines were different from 'Kardinal'. The line KA1 was 9.5 cm wide, and it showed the smallest diameter when compared to other mutants. While the line KA2 was the largest one with 12.5 cm 'Kardinal'. Petal number per flower was also variable among the mutants. The line KA2 had 39.8 petals being the largest number among the mutants, while the line KA1 was the lowest one compared to 35.5 petals of 'Kardinal'. Petal color was measured by using colorimeter. Brightness (L) measured at each petal of four mutants increased more than 'Kardinal'. CIE Lab values, a and b decreased more than 'Kardinal' at the petal color of three mutants except the line KA4. Characteristics of shoot, leaf, etc. from four mutants were also different from the ones of 'Kardinal'. The line KA1 was shortest in shoot, node and peduncle length, and lowest in prickle number. The reverse side of leaves was reddish green color in 'Kardinal' as well as the line KA4, but green color in the line KA1, KA2, and KA3.

  • CTD measurements were conducted in the Nakdong estuary on the several sections or along-plume and cross-plume directions in 1993 and 1994. Internal Froude number Fi=0.22-0.35 in ebb tides and 0.14 in flood tides suggest that Nakdong river plume may go farther seawards in the along-plume direction with little mixing with the adjacent sea water after the construction of Nakdong river barrier. From Dadae-Po to Gaduk-Do section of cross-plume direction, three cores of low salinity were found. The main plume outflows from the newly made channel by cutting Ulsuk-Do after the construction of barrier. The low salinity core found near Gaduk-Do is the plume patch advected by tidal currents. Rossby deformation radius varied with the tidal cycle so that Coriolis effect is strengthened in flood tides to deepen the isohalines westwards to the Gaduk-Do site. Internal wavelike shape was found in the section of cross-plume direction during ebb tides. Richardson number of the section suggests the possibility of forming internal wave but more precise observations are necessary.

  • Diamond films which have high hardness and thermal conductivity can be used to improve the performance of WC-Co as a cutting tool material. However, it is difficult to get such coatings of good uniformity and adhesiveness due to the surface characteristics of WC-Co. To get better coatings, some techniques, such as the surface treatment of substrate or the formation of interlayer between substrate and diamond film, have been tried. In the present work, the nickel interlayer is formed onto WC-Co by electroless Ni-P plating, which is introduced as a new method, and then diamond film is deposited on the interlayer. Formation and uniformity of three layers, i.e., substrate, electroless plate, and diamond film, and the adhesiveness of interlayers were studied. To investigate the effects of pretreatment on electroless plating, two different methods such as acid treatment and diamond powder treatment were used. The effects of heat treatment of the electroless plated surface on adhesiveness between the substrate and the interlayer were examined. It was found that as the temperature increases, the Ni crystals grow and then result in improved adhesiveness. Diamond film coatings of pure diamond phase were obtained at $800^{\circ}C$. It is concluded that the heat treated electroless Ni-P plating can be effectively used as a interlayer between WC-Co substrate and diamond film.

  • It has been known that the conventional retaining wall system with timber lagging and H pile has several problems such as the irregular gap between H-piles, cutting or adding to standard timber, back fill over first step excavation, and especially break-down accident at the disjoint of wall system. In the practical excavation, these problems may lead to worker's accident and the inefficiency of construction economy. To solve the above problems, a new method using prefabricated retaining wall was proposed and verified. The characteristics of the new method is to replace timber wall as free-sliding steel-lagging and connector. To check its verification and application, laboratory tests such as bending strength, tensile strength, and fatigue strength were carried out. Also, a pilot test in the field and numerical simulations under various ground conditions were performed. From the researches, it is found that the prefabricated retaining wall plate can be superior to the conventional timber lagging plate in the strength. It is also found that the proposed methods can be effective in the reuse of retaining wall plate and safe in the disjoint of wall system. Finally, it is desired that the proposed method will be effective in the reduction of the imported timbers and helpful in the safety of retaining wall construction.

  • To examine the natural regeneration in the natural mixed-broadleaved forest, flowering, fruiting, seed-fall, and seed viabilities of Acer pseudosieboldianum (Ap) were investigated in Mt. Jungwang, Gangwon-do, from 2009 to 2015. The flower of Ap consisted many male and bisexual flowers on the corymb. Flowering dates are differed between sex morph in the same inflorescence. Stamens are stop growing and disappeared after pollinated pistil begin to grow in bisexual flowers, and male flowers have vestial pistil. The flowers of Ap might be pollinated by Apis mellifera, Andrenidae spp. and Syrphinae spp. Ap had some mechanism to prevent from self pollination with heterodichogamy. Mean annual seedfall of Ap was 70,780 ea/ha (ranged 310~234,840 ea/ha). Annual seedfall of Ap varied severely, and the maximum was about 760 times the minimum. Annual seed production of Ap might be to a normal distribution. Rates of damaged or decayed seeds are highest 59.3%, and those of sound seeds are 23.9%, Those of undeveloped and empty seeds are 9.2% and 7.6%, respectively. The most important factors influencing sound seed production might be the density and activities of insect pollinators and sucking pest in the flowerwing period, middle-late May. Successful regeneration of Ap might be in masting year and on the gap sites with proper conditions to germinate and grow. To understand the natural regeneration of deciduous hardwoods, further study on the characteristics of flowering and fruiting, pre- and post-dispersal seed predation, and annual variation on these factor should be needed.

  • Due to fast industrialization and reduced agricultural population, there has been increased farm mechanization to reduce the labor requirement. In rice production, mechanical transplanting has been increasingly popular due to the heavy labor requirement in hand transplanting and development of convenient transplanters. For mechanical transplanting, rice seedlings is grown in boxes with limited soils under super dense population, thus short period of exposure to unfavorable temperature and poor water management would cause severe damage to rice seedlings such as seedling damping off and the similar physiological disorders. Several chemicals were evaluated for their effectiveness to control the disease and disorders, and other effects as plant growth stimulants. 3-hydroxy-5-methylisoxazole-a soil fungicide, Metalozyl-a fungicide which controls mildew, SF 8002-the composite of above two chemicals, and Isoprothiolane-a fungicide which controls rice blast were found to be effective controling seedling damping off and similar physiological disorders, and improvement of physiological characteristics of the seedlings such as the amount of bleeding sap, rooting ability, negative geotrophism, and regrowth after cutting. The results indicated that the chemicals will be very effective raising healthy seedlings even under unfavorable environments by the improvement of physiological activities of seedlings and preventing seedling damping off and the similar physiological disorders.
