  • Cure behavior and thermal stability of the different ratio of diglycidylether of bisphenol A(DGEBA)/trimethylolpropane triglycidylether(TMP) epoxy blends initiated by 1 wt % N-benzylpyrazinium hexafluoroantimonate (BPH) as a cationic latent catalyst were studied using DSC and TGA, respectively. Latent properties were performed by measurement of the conversion as a function of temperature using dynamic DSC. Dynamic DSC thermograms of DGEBA/TMP blends revealed that the weak peak was formed by complex formation between the hydroxyl groups in DGEBA and BPH, and between epoxides and BPH in low temperature ranges. The strong peak was considered as an exothermic reaction by the formation of three-dimensional network in high temperature ranges. Isothermal DSC revealed that the reaction rate of the blends was found to be higher than that of the neat TMP. The thermal stabilities in the cured resins were increased with increasing the DGEBA content. These results could be interpreted in terms of the stable aromatic structure, existence of hydroxyl group and high molecular weight of DGEBA.

  • In this study, void behavior of composite laminate by local internal pressure gradient due to structural geometry and surface film application condition was experimentally evaluated through fabrication of spar/skin integrated structure specimens. Viscosity comparison and thermal analysis for both carbon fiber prepreg and surface film were conducted and cure characteristic and rate difference were analyzed. 2 types of spar/skin integrated structural specimens were prepared based on different application condition of surface film. Subsequently, those specimens were evaluated through visual surface inspection, non-destructive and destructive inspection. In a specimen #1 with full application of surface film, low pressurized area of composite laminate created by pressure gradient of structural geometry had voids. It exhibited that voids could not be evacuated and were locked in cured laminate by the influence of pre-cured surface film with relatively faster cure rate. In a specimen #2 without surface film, it revealed that all internal voids disappeared in the cured laminate. Therefore, it is verified that surface film acts as barrier film preventing void movement and evacuation during autoclave cure.

  • The cure behavior of epoxy resin with a conventional amide-type hardener(HD) was investigated in the presence of castor oil(CO), cashew nut shell liquid(CNSL) and CNSL-formaldehyde resin(CFR) by using a dynamic differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). The activation energy of curing reaction was also calculated based on the non-isothermal DSC thermograms at various heating rates. An one-stage curing was noted in the case of epoxy resin filled with CO, while the epoxy resin with CNSL and CFR showed a two-stage curing process. A competitive cure reaction was noted for the epoxy resin/CNSL(or CFR)/HD blends. In the absence of HD, the CFR showed lower values of curing enthalpy than that of CNSL. The activation energy of epoxy resin curing increased with increasing the CNSL and CFR loading.

  • The curing behavior, mechanical properties, hot-air aging resistance, abrasion properties, thermal properties, etc., of EVM/EPM/APP (ammonium polyphosphate)/DPER (dipentaerythritol)/EG (expandable graphite) and EVM/EPM/ATH (aluminium trihydroxide) flame retarding systems in ethylene vinyl acetate rubber (EVM) blends with EPM (ethylene propylene rubber) were sequentially examined. For both flame retarding systems, the torque values increased with the content of EPM rubber and with the vulcanization time. As the content of EPM rubber increased, the scorch time became shorter, whereas the optimum cure time followed an increasing trend. For the EVM/EPM/APP/DPER/EG flameretarding system, as the content of EPM rubber increased, the hardness did not change, whereas the tensile strength and elongation at break decreased. A hot-air aging resistance test at $150^{\circ}C$ showed that the heat resistance decreased with the EPM content regardless of the kinds and contents of flame retardants. As the EPM content increased, the abrasion rate became higher and the abrasion resistance of the EVM/EPM/APP/DPER/EG flame retarding systems exceeded that of the EVM/EPM/ATH flame retarding counterparts. In comparison with the EVM/EPM/ATH flame retarding systems, the thermal stability of the EVM/EPM/APP/DPER/EG flame retarding system showed an increasing tendency.

  • In this research, we studied curing and filler systems for preparation of fast cure SMC and low-density SMC, respectivly. Two curing systems were evaluated for fast cure SMC formulation. One is a mixed initiator system and the other is an activator system. For low-density SMC, glass micro-baloon(GMB) was used as a filler. Various SMC formulations were cured in an appropriate way, and their curing behavior and physical/mechanical properties were characterized. Curing rates were increased with increasing quantity of mixed initiator and activator, but mechanical properties were not affected. As the quantities of GMB increased, density and mechanical properties were decreased.

  • The glass transition temperature ($T_g$) and conversion (${\alpha}$) were measured for a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) epoxy/aromatic amine system incorporated with an organic-inorganic hybrid molecule, polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS). Samples isothermally cured at varying cure temperatures and times were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). $T_g$ vs. ln (time) data at an arbitrary reference were superposed by time-temperature shifts for the kinetically controlled reaction, and the shift factors were used to calculate an Arrhenius activation energy. Influence of POSS was investigated from $T_g$ vs. ${\alpha}$ data, which in turn were fitted with DiBenedetto equation.

  • To improve the application of polymeric dental restorative composite (PDRC) for the posterior and anterior restoration, silica bridged with siloxane unit was firstly prepared by heat-treating a silica filler at various temperatures. Degree of conversion (DC), depth of cure, and dynamic volumetric polymerization shrinkage values of PDRC filled with silica bridged with siloxane unit were investigated to study the effect of heat-treated silica on the polymerization behavior of PDRC. From the experimental result, it was found that depth of cure was decreased with an increase of heat treatment temperature. on the other hand, both DC and polymerization shrinkage values were uniformly enhanced with increasing the heat treatment temperature. This phenomenon can be explained from the study that showed decrease of average particle size of silica resulted in the increase of relative amount of resin matrix in PDRC.

  • Curing behavior and glass transition temperatures of epoxy resins into which reactive diluents were added to control processability were investigated. Heat of cure generated of the epoxy resin was reduced with butyl glycidyl ether(BGE) and phenyl glycidyl ether(PGE) contents. $T_g$ of the resin was decreased with the amount of reactive diluents and it was attributed to increased molecular weight between crosslink points. Cure kinetics of the resins was studied employing autocatalytic reaction model and found that reaction constants decreased as the contents of reactive diluent was increased.

  • Intermittent CSR testing was used to investigate the degradation of a hydrogenated NBR(HNBR) O-rings, and also the prediction of its life-time. The cure system of HNBR O-ring was controlled as sulfur cure and peroxide cure system. An intermittent CSR jig was designed taking into consideration the O-ring's environment under use. The testing allowed observation of the effects of friction, heat loss, and stress relaxation by the Mullins effect. Degradation of O-rings by thermal aging was observed between 100 and $120^{\circ}C$. In the temperature range of $100-120^{\circ}C$, O-rings showed linear degradation behavior and satisfied the Arrhenius relationship. The activation energy of HNBR-S was about 70.6 kJ/mol. From Arrhenius plots, predicted life-times of HNBR-S O-ring were 31.1 years and 33.7 years for 50% and 40% failure conditions, respectively. In case of HNBR-P, the activation energy was about 72.1kJ/mol, and predicted life-times were 34.0 years and 36.5 years for 50% and 40% failure conditions, respectively. The peroxide cure system showed slower degradation rate and higher activation energy than the sulfur cure system.

  • A thermo-viscoplastic finite element program was developed to analyze the compression molding of SMC process. Deformation of the material was modelled by using the flow-rule. Heat balance during the process was coupled to the deformation. In the cure study, a kinetic model was adopted to describe the cure behavior. The numerical kinetic model was integrated with the thermo-viscoplastic numerical analysis by adding heat generation due to the chemical reaction of the workpiece in the heat transfer analysis. The integrated finite element program can simulate a whole sequential molding process including deformation, heat transfer, and chemical reaction. A practical SMC molding process with T-shaped substructure was simulated. The simulated results showed good agreements with experiments.
