  • Washable wool was developed using environmental-friendly spray UV-cure technique. Photocrosslinkable polymer, dextran-methacrylate, was synthesized starting from natural biopolymer, dextran. The aqueous solution of dextran-methacrylate was applied to wool fabric with various concentrations to find out the optimum condition in minimizing felting shrinkage. The wool fabric subsequently cured by 365 nm UV, The effects of UV-cure time and photoinitiator concentration on felting behavior of wool were examined. As the concentration of dextran-methacrylate increased, the felting shrinkage decreased gradually. At concentration 0.5g/ml, the felting shrinkage of wool was negligible. Other properties such as air permeability, moisture content, wrinkle recovery, thickness and wettability were also evaluated. The surface coating of dextran polymer onto wool fiber was identified by SEM.

  • The cure and rheological behavior of Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol F, catalyzed by four kinds of imidazoles and a Nadic methyl anhydride curing agent were studied using a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and rheometer. The isothermal traces were employed to analyze cure reaction. The DGEBF/anhydride conversion profiles showed autocatalyzed reaction characterized by maximum conversion rate at 20~40 % of the reaction. The rate constants obtained from isothermal test showed temperature dependance, but reaction order did not. The order of reaction (m+n) was calculated to be close to 3. The measurements of viscosity and relation time in the presence of inorganic fillers were carried out at different isothermal curing temperatures. The viscosity and gelation time increased with filler content at the same isothermal temperature.

  • This paper presents the cure kinetics studies on the cure reaction of thermosetting resin. Above all, change in degree of cure and specific heat capacity according to temperature are observed using DSC and MDSC. The results are analyzed by cure kinetics and specific heat capacity model. Glass transition temperature was also measured to apply to the specific heat capacity model. Model parameters were gained from the modeling result. As a result, behavior of specific heat capacity can be calculated mathematically.

  • The imidization and cure reaction of a thermosetting phenylethynyl-terminated amic acid (LaRC PETI-5) in film form have been monitored as a function of temperature by means of a steady-state fluorescence technique using a front-face illumination method. The variation of the fluorescence emission spectra of LaRC PETI-5 can be divided into four temperature regions; Region I: below 15$0^{\circ}C$, Region II: 150-25$0^{\circ}C$, Region III: 250-35$0^{\circ}C$, and Region IV: above 35$0^{\circ}C$. The fluorescence spectra in Region I are largely influenced by residual N-methyl-2pyrrolidinone in the polymer and also slightly by partial imidization of the polymer. There is a combined effect of imidization and solvent removal on the fluorescence behavior in Region II. The spectra in Regions III and IV are due significantly to the cure reaction of LaRC PETI-5 and to a post-cure effect of the polyimide, respectively. This spectroscopic evidence indicating the transformation of the amic acid imide oligomer into the corresponding polyimide via imidization and cure, agrees well with thermal analysis results obtained previously. The intermediate stage of cure in the range of 250-30$0^{\circ}C$ predominantly influences the change of the fluorescence intensity. The later stage above 30$0^{\circ}C$ significantly influences the position of the spectrum. This fluorescence study also supports the mechanism proposed in earlier work that the crosslinking reaction takes place at the reaction sites in the conjugated polyene and the phenylethynyl end group in the polyimide chain.

  • Tensile properties including Young's modulus and tear strength were measured for four different rubber compounds; natural rubber(NR), styrene-butadiene copolymer(SBR), ethylene-propylene diene monomer (EPDM), and brominated isobutylene-p-methyl-styrene copolymer(BIMS) as a function of temperature and degree of cure. To see the effect of over cure, a measurement was made of the tensile strength and swelling behavior of the over-cured rubber compounds. Young's modulus, E, was found to have linear dependency on the degree of cure for all rubber compounds. EPDM and BIMS showed the highest and lowest slopes, respectively. The slope of NR and SBR lay between EPDM and BIMS. Tear strength, Gc, decreased in the order of NR>BIMS>SBR>EPDM. As the cure time was extended the degree of cure of NR and SBR decreased, while that of BIMS increased. EPDM showed little change in the degree of cure.

  • Epoxy/anhydride systems with silica filler were studied to improve the cure behavior and characteristics. To study the curing process of epoxy/anhydride using DSC and a stress rheometer, it was observed that gelation temperature increased by increasing the thermal rate or in high isothermal conditions, while it was observed that the degree of cure at gelation decreased. Thermal stability of the epoxy/anhydride system showed any increment by increasing silica contents, except slight decrease of weight by containing humidity. The epoxy resin cured with 30% of silica filler decreased coefficient thermal expansion (CTE) about 33% to show $40ppm/^{\circ}C$. Specimens filled with 30 wt% of silica showed 60% increase in storage modulus at $30^{\circ}C$ to show 3909 MPa compared with neat resin to 2,377 MPa. Epoxy/anhydride systems with surface treated silica by silane coupling agent decreased storage modulus.

  • The fluorine-containing epoxy resin, 2-trifluorotoluene diglycidylether (FER) was prepared by reaction of 2-chloro-${\alpha}$,${\alpha}$,${\alpha}$-trifluorotoluene with glycerol diglycidylether in the presence of pyridine catalyst. Curing behavior of FER/DDM system was investigated using dynamic and isothermal DSC. Cure activation energy (Ea) was determined by Flynn-Wall-Ozawa's equation. The rheological properties of FER/DDM system were studied under isothermal condition using a rheometer. Cross-linking activation energy (Ec) was determined from the Arrhenius equation based on gel time and curing temperature. As a result, the chemical structure of FER was confirmed by FT-IR, $\^$13/C NMR, and $\^$19/F NMR spectroscopy. The cure activation energy of FER/DDM system was 55.4 kJ/mol and conversion and conversion rate were increased with the curing temperature. The cross-linking activation energy of FER/DDM system was 41.6 kJ/mol and gel time was decreased with the curing temperature.

  • The effects of catalyst, accelerator and blend composition on the cure behavior of unsaturated polyester resin (UPE), vinyl ester resin (VE) and their blends were studied using differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). The DSC thermograms strongly depend on each variable. The result shows that the small exothermic peak at 115$^{\circ}C$ is due mainly to the UPE component in the UPE/VE blends and the large one at 134~138 $^{\circ}C$ is due mainly to the VE component. The results also indicate that the change of the DSC thermogram measured after each blend was exposed to high temperature 18$0^{\circ}C$ and the fast curing conditions of a few tens seconds provide useful information on understanding the thermal processing of a blend at high speed. The measurements of resin flow time represent that there are three distinct stages of cure in the UPE/VE blends: induction, transition and macro-gelation stages, as similarly reported for UPE by others earlier. The thermal stability and flexural properties of the cured UPE are significantly improved by blending it with the VE, depending on the composition.

  • In this work, the effect of chemical surface treatments on morphology of carbon blacks was investigated in terms of cure behavior and tearing energy ($G_T$) of carbon blacks/rubber composites. As experimental results, the polar or nonpolar chemical treatment led to a significant physical change of carbon black morphology. The cure activation energies (Ea) and frequency factor (A) obtained from Kissinger equation decreased with improving the dispersion of carbon flacks, resulting in high reactivity. However, a significant advantage of carbon black/rubber composites is gained by carbon blacks treated in basic (BCB) or nonpolar (NCB) chemical solution, resulting in increasing the tearing energy. These results could be explained by changes of dispersion, agglomerate, surface functional group, void volume, and cross-linking density of carbon black/rubber composites.
