  • This study is based on the sport event(mountains marathon race 2005 in Jecheon) of social and cultural impact. The results were as fallows: Factor analysis of 19 positive impact items produced five dimensions and factor analysis of 9 negative impact items produced two dimensions. As an example of results, younger generations (those in 20s and 30s) and service employees tended to perceive the impacts of the sport event more positively than other age or occupation groups. Thus, the results indicated that attitudes toward the event are likely to differ across socio-demographic characteristics.

  • This study was to investigate 1) the effect of the variables (age, education level, average monthly income, occupation) relating to the multi-cultural family father(MF) on children's vocabulary(CV), 2) the relationship between the father's participation in their children's fostering(FPCF) and CV. FPCF in 24 MFs and CV were evaluated using the questionnaire, interview. The results are as follows: 1) There were significant correlations among father's education level, average income, occupation, and CV. FPCF scores. 2) There were no significant correlation between father's age and CV. 3) There were significant correlations between FPCF scores and CV. And some interview examples were illustrated in this paper.

  • With an assumption that the view point of a given society and time on facial attractiveness can be inferred by analyzing popular stars' faces, the cross-cultural differences in the physical measures of Korean and foreign stars were investigated. A classification model of affective facial impressions was used to obtain the physical measures of the faces and classifying them into a face-type category. The number of face images analyzed in the study were 629 in total: 258 Korean stars, and 200 foreign stars. The results show that the common characteristics found in the cross-cultural analyses of Western and Eastern stars was a babyish impression. Babyish feature was found distinctive also in western male stars, while such trend was not found in Asian male star.

  • The purpose of the study is to examine the factors that influence on the Koreans' intergenerational communication. A survey was conducted with university students in their 20s, and the impacts of filial piety and indigenous cultural factors(confucianism and Chemyon) on intergenerational communication styles and intergeneral communication satisfaction were tested. Results of hierarchical regression analyses showed that politeness and confucianism had positive influence on intergenerational communication while deference and Chmyon had negative influence on intergenerational communication. The indigenous cultural variables increased total R2 significantly, proving the crucial impact of confucianism and Chemyon on the Koreans' intergenerational communication. Finally, male students perceived higher level of communicative satisfaction than female students in the intergenerational communication context.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of soil, cultural practices and climatic conditions on some chemical constituents of flue-cured tobacco. Increasing the nicotine and total nitrogen contents may be useful to reduce the total sugar content of cured leaves in flue-cured tobacco. Delaying the transplanting date and increasing the soil nitrogen($N0_3-N$ and $N0_4-N$) content for 30 days after transplanting by fertilizing are desirable so as to increase the nicotine and total nitrogen contents of cured leaves. Those treatments will delay the ripeness, and elongate the duration of cultivation(day from transplanting to harvesting), and increase the fresh leaf weight. Moderate rainfall in April and May, lower relative humidity in June, and higher mean daily air temperature in June and July seem to be necessary for good leaf of flue-cured tobacco in Korea.

  • This study analyzes six slags excavated from the iron making site in Gogi-ri, Namwon, Korea to understand the characteristics of the ruins, and to confirm the iron making process performed at the time. The chemical components of the iron making by-products from the Gogi-ri site were analyzed, and the findings indicate total Fe contents between 23.24% and 37.56%, which are lower than the typical total Fe content found in ancient iron making processes. The deoxidation agent contents of the slags ranged from 43.88% to 58.13%, which are higher than the typical deoxidation agent content of ancient iron making processes. The high content suggests smooth separation between iron and slags, and TiO2 detected from the site suggests the use of materials with high titanium content in the iron making in the region. As for the microstructures of the slags, some slags have long pillar-shaped fayalites, while others have pillar-shaped wüstite along with ulvöspinel. Slags from the forging furnace show hammer scales created by both the earlier stages and later stages of forging work. The findings suggest that the iron making site in Gogi-ri, Namwon, Korea used to be an iron making facility where a full range of iron making process was carried out ranging from smelting to forging, and the ironmakers used a wide array of technologies to manufacture iron products.
