  • This study is conducted to estimate the firing temperature and condition of the 4-6th Century earthenwares excavated from the ancient tombs in the Seonggok-ri, Cheongdo through mineralogical approaches, and to contrast to the characteristics of the earthenware from the Changnyeong the adjacent area to the Cheongdo. The Cheongdo earthenware was mainly composed of quartz, pores and vitric matrix with minor parts of feldspars, felsic volcanic fragments and opaque minerals, of which quartz crystals frequently show embayed texture and pores was partly filled with amorphous quartz. Mullite, hematite and cristobalite were found by XRD spectrometer additionally, and in the SEM image the Mullite contents are evenly distributed from the central part to the marginal part. As a result, the firing temperature of the Cheongdo earthenware could be 1,100 to $1,200^{\circ}C$, which is higher than that of the Changnyeong. Distribution characteristics of mullite in the Cheongdo and the Changnyeong earthenware indicate that the Cheongdo earthenware was under the longer firing time or more homogeneous thermal condition in the kiln than the Changnyeong.

  • In Korean academic societies, old maps has not yet been properly investigated in terms of their genealogy, classification, detailed place names, historical backgrounds and the other aspects. With publication of the bibliographies and papers on old maps reserved in museum and library, the scope of research enlarged gradually its scope from 1970s. In 1980s, with the development of theoretical geography, scientific analysis were applied to investigate the projection method of Daedongyeo-jido. The 1990s proved a prominent decade for researches. The photo-copies of old maps enabled researchers to investigate the in-depth comparative study. The more important thing is that old maps became to be powerful instrument in the research of historical geography, such as territorial disputes and marine name(東海). And county old maps compiled by region became to be regional-cultural contents of local areas. Important issues in old map research in Korean academic societies are about Cheonha-do which is unique old world map in Korea, grid-system projection in old county maps and the genealogy of Daedongyeo-jido(manuscript and block print edition). This study shows that bibliography of all old maps preserved in each library and museum should be standardized. This could enable the exchange of information of old maps between institutes. The more important thing is that conciliation of human, social and natural sciences should be applied in the research of old maps.

  • This study examined the chemical characteristics and the microstructure of Goryeo whiteware which was excavated in the kiln site Yucheon-ri, Gangwon-do, the southern part of South Korea. this area is considered to be used in the middle of the time of Goryeo Dynasty. We analyzed the chemical characteristics comparing Goryeo Whiteware from Seo-ri, Jungam-ri, Bangsan-dong and The temple site of Beopcheon. Based on the analysis, we confirmed the properties of raw material for making pottery. It is featured that body composition of Goryeo Whiteware from Yucheon-ri contains high silica and low solvent. However, the contents of the glaze are vice versa. Goryeo whiteware tends to contain larger part of oxide than that of titanium oxide, which applies to Goryeo Celadon. the whitewares during the early days of Goryeo Dynasty varies in components depending on kilns, whereas it does not mean that chronological changes happened in components. The whiteware shards from Yuchoen-ri have a similar aspect. The whiteware shard from the temple of Beopchen differ in composition, Thus they are estimated to have been produces and shipped from various sites. In conclusion, we judged that the component difference among Goryeo whitewares stems from production environment and origin of raw materials rather than chronological changers.

  • This experiment was conducted to determine the rice quality between slowlelease fertilizer(SRF) and conventional fertilizer (CF) with the amount of 100% and 80% under direct seeding on dry paddy field, respectively. In rice quality, the percentage of matured grain and immatured grain was higher in CF with machine transplanting than in SRF with direct seeding, and the less amount of fertilizer applied, the lower percentage of immatured grain was obtained. The percentage of carbohydrate showed the difference between CF and SRF, and higher at the level of 100% applicated than that of 80% application. The contents of fat and ash were higher in CF with less fertilizer, and there was no trend to different cultural methods but it was related to the amount of fertilizer in amylose content. The nitrogen and sodium content of milled rice was high in SRF under machine transplanting as well as direct seeding. Calcium and magnesium content showed high in direct seeding but there was not significantly difference between CF and SRF.

  • Purpose - This study examines the positive impact of the social distance between producers and users of online content, investigating and analyzing the most popular Web content. In addition, it tries to elicit the matching effect that appears when the individuals'cultural background is consistent with social distance. Research design, data, and methodology - We collected and analyzed actual data about 4,981 videos clips on YouTube, looking at six countries in order to verify the content of this study. Based on the results of the data analysis, the study conducted behavioral measurements on popularity, social distance, culture, and user engagement. The unit of analysis was the content and we collected information about the content producers and the content records. We controlled the views, comments, likes, calendar dates, and ages in the empirical models. The data was collected in 2011, with the records coming from South Korea, Japan, China, U.S., German, and France. A total of 4,980 elements were analyzed in the model. The empirical model estimated is the bivariate negative binomial distribution (NBD) model. Results - It turns out that there is a possibility that the matching effect can be diminished by variables that reflect the psychological involvement of user engagement. This study proposes academic and practical implications based on these research results. This research shows the positive effect of social distance between users and producers on the increased performance of the online content. We find the effect of social distance to be a stronger tendency in collectivism. The collectivists follow their sense of friendship and intimacy in their culture and, the social congruence effect can be found there as well. The effect, however, could erode in a social case where users are motivated by strong intrinsic and psychological factors. In addition, user engagement complicates the process of user decision making regarding the information. Conclusions - This study examines how the differential effects of social distance caused by culture could disappear through user commitment as a complicated user motivation. Some potential implications are as follows. First, a firm in the collectivism culture has to communicate based on the social distance. In fact, most online channels do not have a function that indicates the social distance as measured by favorites or subscribers. This function could help increase the performance of the content in online channels, but this increasing effect can only be found in a collectivist culture. Based on this, the firms have to communicate and announce to users the actual social distance between users and producers. Second, firms should develop a system that discovers the social distance and culture and shows these measures to users and producers, since the congruence effect between social distance and culture is found only for low user engagement. The firms can take the advantage of the congruence effect only for the development of the social distance and culture visualized system.

  • The objective of this research is to find out what the Korean traditional changing of SooMunJang and the United Kingdom's ceremony of changing the guard suggests us by performing comparative analysis as well as research of the United Kingdom Household Division's history of transition, organization, and their missions since 1660. The Royal Household is a constitutional monarchy and served by the Household Division for 350 years as a symbol of the United Kingdom. The Household Division is a regular army that is affiliated to British Army. The Guards Division consists of two cavalry regiments and five infantry regiments along with the King's Troop, Royal Horse Artillery. The Household Division not only escorts the king, guards royal palace, and attends a official function, but also dispatched to a combat area as the most elite troops. Similarities in aspect of king escort, palace guard, and succession of tradition were found from the comparison between Korean and the United Kingdom's changing of the guard. On the other hand, fundamental purpose and objective, process of forming a tourist attraction, organization were distinctive. While the Household Division and the Royal Household became a worldwide symbol of the United Kingdom, Korean changing of SooMunJang is insufficient to represent Korean traditional royal guard custom and just reenacting historical tradition to emphasize the succession of tradition and to develop tourism. Therefore, this research is suggesting methods to improve the cultural contents of distinctive Korean traditional royal guard and escort of royal family.

  • Addition of two different salt mixtures of sodium phosphates, Ca-EDTA, $NaNO_2$ and sodium citrate were investigated for their effects on relative viscosity, textrue, sensory properties of kimchi and solids contents of kimchi and kimchi liquid during fermentation at $4{\sim}3.5^{\circ}C$. The salt mixtures were added into half fermented kimchi with the concentration range of $0.001{\sim}0.01\;M$. The results showed that higher values in viscosity of kimchi liquids were obtained for those fermented at low temperature and with salts mixtures added. The hardness of Chinese cabbage was gernerally increased until pH 4.0 reached and then decreased thereafter for those fermented without salts mixture. However the salts added kimchi showed no decrease and a slightly harder texture measured at the late stage of fermentation. Soluble solids concentration steadly decreased in kimchi liquids for those salts mixture added while those without salts mixture were initially increased followed by slow decrease. Comparison of sensory properties showed that the degree of changes was reduced when salt mixture was added. Higher scores in fresh-sourness and acidic taste, hardness and chewiness in texture and lower moldy odor were obtained when the data was compared for those kimchi having the pH range of $4.0{\sim}4.2$.

  • The guano formed from the bat excrement in a cave contains various sulfate and phosphate minerals formed from the reaction of bat excrement with surrounding rocks and clastic minerals. Therefore, the mineral compositions in the guano provide basic informations on the geochemical environments affecting mineral formation in a cave. This study was conducted to study the mineral compositions of guano and the factors affecting those compositions by comparing mineralogical and chemical compositions in three different limestone caves in Korea. The guano samples in Gossi Cave contain detrital minerals such as illite, quartz and feldspar and relatively large amount of gypsum. The contents of gypsum increase with increasing depth, which is different from the samples collected in other caves. The samples collected from Baekryong Cave have the similar mineral compositions to those in Gossi Cave, but they also contain additional kaolinite and very small amount of gypsum. The samples in Sungryu Cave have similar mineralogical compositions to those in Gossi Cave, but contian bassanite instead of gypsum. The mineralogical compositions are well correlated with the chemical compositions of guano. The mineral compositions indicate that, in Gossi Cave, the minerals were formed by the reaction of large amount of bat excrement with surrounding rocks in high humidity condition or in the condition of frequent floods. In the case of Sungryu Cave, bassanite which can be formed in a dry condition indicates that minerals were formed in a relatively low humidity condition.

  • The artificial rain (pH 4.0, pH 5.6 and pH 6.85) and weathering simulation test are applied in dolomitic marble for the prediction of deterioration of the stone monuments constructed with carbonate rock by acid rain. pH of the applied rain all increase to about neutral pH after reaction of marble. The contents of $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$ have increased more than twofold in two acid rain and deionized neutral rain after reaction of marble. The weight of marble is expected to decrease $0.00037kg/m^2$ each test cycle by pH 4.0 rain. This weight reduction rate of marble is 1.4 and 3.1 times more in pH 5.6 and pH 6.85 rain respectively, and 3.7 times more in only artificial weathering test. The compressive strength of marble is expected to decrease 0.2468, 0.1791 and $0.1280kg/m^2$ per test cycle with pH 4.0, pH 5.6 and pH 6.85 rain, respectively. These results mean that more acidic rain more enfeeble the strength of marble. Dolomite and small amount of calcite are precipitated in the rains after reaction of marble.
